Learning to Incorporate Texture Saliency Adaptive Attention to Image Cartoonization

Image cartoonization is recently dominated by generative adversarial networks (GANs) from the perspective of unsupervised image-to-image translation, in which an inherent challenge is to precisely capture and sufficiently transfer characteristic cartoon styles (e.g., clear edges, smooth color shading, abstract fine structures, etc.). Existing advanced models try to enhance cartoonization effect by learning to promote edges adversarially, introducing style transfer loss, or learning to align style from multiple representation space. This paper demonstrates that more distinct and vivid cartoonization effect could be easily achieved with only basic adversarial loss. Observing that cartoon style is more evident in cartoon-texture-salient local image regions, we build a region-level adversarial learning branch in parallel with the normal image-level one, which constrains adversarial learning on cartoon-texture-salient local patches for better perceiving and transferring cartoon texture features. To this end, a novel cartoon-texture-saliency-sampler (CTSS) module is proposed to dynamically sample cartoon-texture-salient patches from training data. With extensive experiments, we demonstrate that texture saliency adaptive attention in adversarial learning, as a missing ingredient of related methods in image cartoonization, is of significant importance in facilitating and enhancing image cartoon stylization, especially for high-resolution input pictures.

Learning to Manipulate Artistic Images

Recent advancement in computer vision has significantly lowered the barriers to artistic creation. Exemplar-based image translation methods have attracted much attention due to flexibility and controllability. However, these methods hold assumptions regarding semantics or require semantic information as the input, while accurate semantics is not easy to obtain in artistic images. Besides, these methods suffer from cross-domain artifacts due to training data prior and generate imprecise structure due to feature compression in the spatial domain. In this paper, we propose an arbitrary Style Image Manipulation Network (SIM-Net), which leverages semantic-free information as guidance and a region transportation strategy in a self-supervised manner for image generation. Our method balances computational efficiency and high resolution to a certain extent. Moreover, our method facilitates zero-shot style image manipulation. Both qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art methods.Code is available at https://github.com/SnailForce/SIM-Net.

Improving Neural Machine Translation by Multi-Knowledge Integration with Prompting

Improving neural machine translation (NMT) systems with prompting has achieved significant progress in recent years. In this work, we focus on how to integrate multi-knowledge, multiple types of knowledge, into NMT models to enhance the performance with prompting. We propose a unified framework, which can integrate effectively multiple types of knowledge including sentences, terminologies/phrases and translation templates into NMT models. We utilize multiple types of knowledge as prefix-prompts of input for the encoder and decoder of NMT models to guide the translation process. The approach requires no changes to the model architecture and effectively adapts to domain-specific translation without retraining. The experiments on English-Chinese and English-German translation demonstrate that our approach significantly outperform strong baselines, achieving high translation quality and terminology match accuracy.

Synslator: An Interactive Machine Translation Tool with Online Learning

Interactive machine translation (IMT) has emerged as a progression of the computer-aided translation paradigm, where the machine translation system and the human translator collaborate to produce high-quality translations. This paper introduces Synslator, a user-friendly computer-aided translation (CAT) tool that not only supports IMT, but is adept at online learning with real-time translation memories. To accommodate various deployment environments for CAT services, Synslator integrates two different neural translation models to handle translation memories for online learning. Additionally, the system employs a language model to enhance the fluency of translations in an interactive mode. In evaluation, we have confirmed the effectiveness of online learning through the translation models, and have observed a 13% increase in post-editing efficiency with the interactive functionalities of Synslator. Learning Efficient Representations for Image-Based Patent Retrieval

Patent retrieval has been attracting tremendous interest from researchers in intellectual property and information retrieval communities in the past decades. However, most existing approaches rely on textual and metadata information of the patent, and content-based image-based patent retrieval is rarely investigated. Based on traits of patent drawing images, we present a simple and lightweight model for this task. Without bells and whistles, this approach significantly outperforms other counterparts on a large-scale benchmark and noticeably improves the state-of-the-art by 33.5% with the mean average precision (mAP) score. Further experiments reveal that this model can be elaborately scaled up to achieve a surprisingly high mAP of 93.5%. Our method ranks first in the ECCV 2022 Patent Diagram Image Retrieval Challenge.

EDMAE: An Efficient Decoupled Masked Autoencoder for Standard View Identification in Pediatric Echocardiography

This paper introduces the Efficient Decoupled Masked Autoencoder (EDMAE), a novel self-supervised method for recognizing standard views in pediatric echocardiography. EDMAE introduces a new proxy task based on the encoder-decoder structure. The EDMAE encoder is composed of a teacher and a student encoder. The teacher encoder extracts the potential representation of the masked image blocks, while the student encoder extracts the potential representation of the visible image blocks. The loss is calculated between the feature maps output by the two encoders to ensure consistency in the latent representations they extract. EDMAE uses pure convolution operations instead of the ViT structure in the MAE encoder. This improves training efficiency and convergence speed. EDMAE is pre-trained on a large-scale private dataset of pediatric echocardiography using self-supervised learning, and then fine-tuned for standard view recognition. The proposed method achieves high classification accuracy in 27 standard views of pediatric echocardiography. To further verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the authors perform another downstream task of cardiac ultrasound segmentation on the public dataset CAMUS. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms some popular supervised and recent self-supervised methods, and is more competitive on different downstream tasks.

Graph Convolution Based Efficient Re-Ranking for Visual Retrieval

Visual retrieval tasks such as image retrieval and person re-identification (Re-ID) aim at effectively and thoroughly searching images with similar content or the same identity. After obtaining retrieved examples, re-ranking is a widely adopted post-processing step to reorder and improve the initial retrieval results by making use of the contextual information from semantically neighboring samples. Prevailing re-ranking approaches update distance metrics and mostly rely on inefficient crosscheck set comparison operations while computing expanded neighbors based distances. In this work, we present an efficient re-ranking method which refines initial retrieval results by updating features. Specifically, we reformulate re-ranking based on Graph Convolution Networks (GCN) and propose a novel Graph Convolution based Re-ranking (GCR) for visual retrieval tasks via feature propagation. To accelerate computation for large-scale retrieval, a decentralized and synchronous feature propagation algorithm which supports parallel or distributed computing is introduced. In particular, the plain GCR is extended for cross-camera retrieval and an improved feature propagation formulation is presented to leverage affinity relationships across different cameras. It is also extended for video-based retrieval, and Graph Convolution based Re-ranking for Video (GCRV) is proposed by mathematically deriving a novel profile vector generation method for the tracklet. Without bells and whistles, the proposed approaches achieve state-of-the-art performances on seven benchmark datasets from three different tasks, i.e., image retrieval, person Re-ID and video-based person Re-ID.

Efficient Token-Guided Image-Text Retrieval with Consistent Multimodal Contrastive Training

Image-text retrieval is a central problem for understanding the semantic relationship between vision and language, and serves as the basis for various visual and language tasks. Most previous works either simply learn coarse-grained representations of the overall image and text, or elaborately establish the correspondence between image regions or pixels and text words. However, the close relations between coarse- and fine-grained representations for each modality are important for image-text retrieval but almost neglected. As a result, such previous works inevitably suffer from low retrieval accuracy or heavy computational cost. In this work, we address image-text retrieval from a novel perspective by combining coarse- and fine-grained representation learning into a unified framework. This framework is consistent with human cognition, as humans simultaneously pay attention to the entire sample and regional elements to understand the semantic content. To this end, a Token-Guided Dual Transformer (TGDT) architecture which consists of two homogeneous branches for image and text modalities, respectively, is proposed for image-text retrieval. The TGDT incorporates both coarse- and fine-grained retrievals into a unified framework and beneficially leverages the advantages of both retrieval approaches. A novel training objective called Consistent Multimodal Contrastive (CMC) loss is proposed accordingly to ensure the intra- and inter-modal semantic consistencies between images and texts in the common embedding space. Equipped with a two-stage inference method based on the mixed global and local cross-modal similarity, the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art retrieval performances with extremely low inference time when compared with representative recent approaches.

Atrial Septal Defect Detection in Children Based on Ultrasound Video Using Multiple Instances Learning

Purpose: Congenital heart defect (CHD) is the most common birth defect. Thoracic echocardiography (TTE) can provide sufficient cardiac structure information, evaluate hemodynamics and cardiac function, and is an effective method for atrial septal defect (ASD) examination. This paper aims to study a deep learning method based on cardiac ultrasound video to assist in ASD diagnosis. Materials and methods: We select two standard views of the atrial septum (subAS) and low parasternal four-compartment view (LPS4C) as the two views to identify ASD. We enlist data from 300 children patients as part of a double-blind experiment for five-fold cross-validation to verify the performance of our model. In addition, data from 30 children patients (15 positives and 15 negatives) are collected for clinician testing and compared to our model test results (these 30 samples do not participate in model training). We propose an echocardiography video-based atrial septal defect diagnosis system. In our model, we present a block random selection, maximal agreement decision and frame sampling strategy for training and testing respectively, resNet18 and r3D networks are used to extract the frame features and aggregate them to build a rich video-level representation. Results: We validate our model using our private dataset by five-cross validation. For ASD detection, we achieve 89.33 AUC, 84.95 accuracy, 85.70 sensitivity, 81.51 specificity and 81.99 F1 score. Conclusion: The proposed model is multiple instances learning-based deep learning model for video atrial septal defect detection which effectively improves ASD detection accuracy when compared to the performances of previous networks and clinical doctors.

Easy Guided Decoding in Providing Suggestions for Interactive Machine Translation

Machine translation technology has made great progress in recent years, but it cannot guarantee error free results. Human translators perform post editing on machine translations to correct errors in the scene of computer aided translation. In favor of expediting the post editing process, many works have investigated machine translation in interactive modes, in which machines can automatically refine the rest of translations constrained by human's edits. Translation Suggestion (TS), as an interactive mode to assist human translators, requires machines to generate alternatives for specific incorrect words or phrases selected by human translators. In this paper, we utilize the parameterized objective function of neural machine translation (NMT) and propose a novel constrained decoding algorithm, namely Prefix Suffix Guided Decoding (PSGD), to deal with the TS problem without additional training. Compared to the state of the art lexically constrained decoding method, PSGD improves translation quality by an average of $10.87$ BLEU and $8.62$ BLEU on the WeTS and the WMT 2022 Translation Suggestion datasets, respectively, and reduces decoding time overhead by an average of 63.4% tested on the WMT translation datasets. Furthermore, on both of the TS benchmark datasets, it is superior to other supervised learning systems trained with TS annotated data.

Disambiguated Lexically Constrained Neural Machine Translation

Lexically constrained neural machine translation (LCNMT), which controls the translation generation with pre-specified constraints, is important in many practical applications. Current approaches to LCNMT typically assume that the pre-specified lexical constraints are contextually appropriate. This assumption limits their application to real-world scenarios where a source lexicon may have multiple target constraints, and disambiguation is needed to select the most suitable one. In this paper, we propose disambiguated LCNMT (D-LCNMT) to solve the problem. D-LCNMT is a robust and effective two-stage framework that disambiguates the constraints based on contexts at first, then integrates the disambiguated constraints into LCNMT. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms strong baselines including existing data augmentation based approaches on benchmark datasets, and comprehensive experiments in scenarios where a source lexicon corresponds to multiple target constraints demonstrate the constraint disambiguation superiority of our approach.

Non-parametric, Nearest-neighbor-assisted Fine-tuning for Neural Machine Translation

Non-parametric, k-nearest-neighbor algorithms have recently made inroads to assist generative models such as language models and machine translation decoders. We explore whether such non-parametric models can improve machine translation models at the fine-tuning stage by incorporating statistics from the kNN predictions to inform the gradient updates for a baseline translation model. There are multiple methods which could be used to incorporate kNN statistics and we investigate gradient scaling by a gating mechanism, the kNN's ground truth probability, and reinforcement learning. For four standard in-domain machine translation datasets, compared with classic fine-tuning, we report consistent improvements of all of the three methods by as much as 1.45 BLEU and 1.28 BLEU for German-English and English-German translations respectively. Through qualitative analysis, we found particular improvements when it comes to translating grammatical relations or function words, which results in increased fluency of our model.

Efficient Large-scale Scene Representation with a Hybrid of High-resolution Grid and Plane Features

Existing neural radiance fields (NeRF) methods for large-scale scene modeling require days of training using multiple GPUs, hindering their applications in scenarios with limited computing resources. Despite fast optimization NeRF variants have been proposed based on the explicit dense or hash grid features, their effectivenesses are mainly demonstrated in object-scale scene representation. In this paper, we point out that the low feature resolution in explicit representation is the bottleneck for large-scale unbounded scene representation. To address this problem, we introduce a new and efficient hybrid feature representation for NeRF that fuses the 3D hash-grids and high-resolution 2D dense plane features. Compared with the dense-grid representation, the resolution of a dense 2D plane can be scaled up more efficiently. Based on this hybrid representation, we propose a fast optimization NeRF variant, called GP-NeRF, that achieves better rendering results while maintaining a compact model size. Extensive experiments on multiple large-scale unbounded scene datasets show that our model can converge in 1.5 hours using a single GPU while achieving results comparable to or even better than the existing method that requires about one day's training with 8 GPUs.

TSMind: Alibaba and Soochow University's Submission to the WMT22 Translation Suggestion Task

This paper describes the joint submission of Alibaba and Soochow University, TSMind, to the WMT 2022 Shared Task on Translation Suggestion (TS). We participate in the English-German and English-Chinese tasks. Basically, we utilize the model paradigm fine-tuning on the downstream tasks based on large-scale pre-trained models, which has recently achieved great success. We choose FAIR's WMT19 English-German news translation system and MBART50 for English-Chinese as our pre-trained models. Considering the task's condition of limited use of training data, we follow the data augmentation strategies proposed by WeTS to boost our TS model performance. The difference is that we further involve the dual conditional cross-entropy model and GPT-2 language model to filter augmented data. The leader board finally shows that our submissions are ranked first in three of four language directions in the Naive TS task of the WMT22 Translation Suggestion task.

Third-Party Aligner for Neural Word Alignments

Word alignment is to find translationally equivalent words between source and target sentences. Previous work has demonstrated that self-training can achieve competitive word alignment results. In this paper, we propose to use word alignments generated by a third-party word aligner to supervise the neural word alignment training. Specifically, source word and target word of each word pair aligned by the third-party aligner are trained to be close neighbors to each other in the contextualized embedding space when fine-tuning a pre-trained cross-lingual language model. Experiments on the benchmarks of various language pairs show that our approach can surprisingly do self-correction over the third-party supervision by finding more accurate word alignments and deleting wrong word alignments, leading to better performance than various third-party word aligners, including the currently best one. When we integrate all supervisions from various third-party aligners, we achieve state-of-the-art word alignment performances, with averagely more than two points lower alignment error rates than the best third-party aligner. We released our code at https://github.com/sdongchuanqi/Third-Party-Supervised-Aligner.

Bilingual Terminology Extraction from Comparable E-Commerce Corpora

Bilingual terminologies are important machine translation resources in the field of e-commerce, which are usually either manually translated or automatically extracted from parallel data. The human translation is costly and e-commerce parallel corpora is very scarce. However, the comparable data in different languages in the same commodity field is abundant. In this paper, we propose a novel framework of extracting e-commercial bilingual terminologies from comparable data. Benefiting from the cross-lingual pre-training in e-commerce, our framework can make full use of the deep semantic relationship between source-side terminology and target-side sentence to extract corresponding target terminology. Experimental results on various language pairs show that our approaches achieve significantly better performance than various strong baselines.

ViSearch: Weak Consistency Measurement for Replicated Data Types

Large-scale replicated data type stores often resort to eventual consistency to guarantee low latency and high availability. It is widely accepted that programming over eventually consistent data stores is challenging, since arbitrary divergence among replicas is allowed. Moreover, pragmatic protocols actually achieve consistency guarantees stronger than eventual consistency, which can be and need to be utilized to facilitate the reasoning of and programming over replicated data types. Toward the challenges above, we propose the ViSearch framework for precise measurement of eventual consistency semantics. ViSearch employs the visibility-arbitration specification methodology in concurrent programming, which extends the linearizability-based specification methodology with a dynamic visibility relation among operations, in addition to the standard dynamic happen-before and linearization relations. The consistency measurement using ViSearch is NP-hard in general. To enable practical and efficient consistency measurement in replicated data type stores, the ViSearch framework refactors the existing brute-force checking algorithm to a generic algorithm skeleton, which further enables efficient pruning of the search space and effective parallelization. We employ the ViSearch framework for consistency measurement in two replicated data type stores Riak and CRDT-Redis. The experimental evaluation shows the usefulness and cost-effectiveness of consistency measurement based on the ViSearch framework in realistic scenarios.

Remove-Win: a Design Framework for Conflict-free Replicated Data Types

Distributed storage systems employ replication to improve performance and reliability. To provide low latency data access, replicas are often required to accept updates without coordination with each other, and the updates are then propagated asynchronously. This brings the critical challenge of conflict resolution among concurrent updates. Conflict-free Replicated Data Type (CRDT) is a principled approach to addressing this challenge. However, existing CRDT designs are tricky, and hard to be generalized to other data types. A design framework is in great need to guide the systematic design of new CRDTs. To address this challenge, we propose RWF -- the Remove-Win design Framework for CRDTs. RWF leverages the simple but powerful remove-win strategy to resolve conflicting updates, and provides generic design for a variety of data container types. Two exemplar implementations following RWF are given over the Redis data type store, which demonstrate the effectiveness of RWF. Performance measurements of our implementations further show the efficiency of CRDT designs following RWF.
