A Data-Driven Approach for High-Impedance Fault Localization in Distribution Systems

Accurate and quick identification of high-impedance faults is critical for the reliable operation of distribution systems. Unlike other faults in power grids, HIFs are very difficult to detect by conventional overcurrent relays due to the low fault current. Although HIFs can be affected by various factors, the voltage current characteristics can substantially imply how the system responds to the disturbance and thus provides opportunities to effectively localize HIFs. In this work, we propose a data-driven approach for the identification of HIF events. To tackle the nonlinearity of the voltage current trajectory, first, we formulate optimization problems to approximate the trajectory with piecewise functions. Then we collect the function features of all segments as inputs and use the support vector machine approach to efficiently identify HIFs at different locations. Numerical studies on the IEEE 123-node test feeder demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the proposed approach for real-time HIF identification.

Complementary and Integrative Health Lexicon (CIHLex) and Entity Recognition in the Literature

Objective: Our study aimed to construct an exhaustive Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH) Lexicon (CIHLex) to better represent the often underrepresented physical and psychological CIH approaches in standard terminologies. We also intended to apply advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) models such as Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and GPT-3.5 Turbo for CIH named entity recognition, evaluating their performance against established models like MetaMap and CLAMP. Materials and Methods: We constructed the CIHLex by integrating various resources, compiling and integrating data from biomedical literature and relevant knowledge bases. The Lexicon encompasses 198 unique concepts with 1090 corresponding unique terms. We matched these concepts to the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS). Additionally, we developed and utilized BERT models and compared their efficiency in CIH named entity recognition to that of other models such as MetaMap, CLAMP, and GPT3.5-turbo. Results: From the 198 unique concepts in CIHLex, 62.1% could be matched to at least one term in the UMLS. Moreover, 75.7% of the mapped UMLS Concept Unique Identifiers (CUIs) were categorized as "Therapeutic or Preventive Procedure." Among the models applied to CIH named entity recognition, BLUEBERT delivered the highest macro average F1-score of 0.90, surpassing other models. Conclusion: Our CIHLex significantly augments representation of CIH approaches in biomedical literature. Demonstrating the utility of advanced NLP models, BERT notably excelled in CIH entity recognition. These results highlight promising strategies for enhancing standardization and recognition of CIH terminology in biomedical contexts.

Distributionally Robust Chance-Constrained Optimal Transmission Switching for Renewable Integration

Increasing integration of renewable generation poses significant challenges to ensure robustness guarantees in real-time energy system decision-making. This work aims to develop a robust optimal transmission switching (OTS) framework that can effectively relieve grid congestion and mitigate renewable curtailment. We formulate a two-stage distributionally robust chance-constrained (DRCC) problem that assures limited constraint violations for any uncertainty distribution within an ambiguity set. Here, the second-stage recourse variables are represented as linear functions of uncertainty, yielding an equivalent reformulation involving linear constraints only. We utilize moment-based (mean-mean absolute deviation) and distance-based (infinity-Wasserstein distance) ambiguity sets that lead to scalable mixed-integer linear program (MILP) formulations. Numerical experiments on the IEEE 14-bus and 118-bus systems have demonstrated the performance improvements of the proposed DRCC-OTS approaches in terms of guaranteed constraint violations and reduced renewable curtailment. In particular, the computational efficiency of the moment-based MILP approach, which is scenario-free with fixed problem dimensions, has been confirmed, making it suitable for real-time grid operations.

Scalable Learning for Optimal Load Shedding Under Power Grid Emergency Operations

Effective and timely responses to unexpected contingencies are crucial for enhancing the resilience of power grids. Given the fast, complex process of cascading propagation, corrective actions such as optimal load shedding (OLS) are difficult to attain in large-scale networks due to the computation complexity and communication latency issues. This work puts forth an innovative learning-for-OLS approach by constructing the optimal decision rules of load shedding under a variety of potential contingency scenarios through offline neural network (NN) training. Notably, the proposed NN-based OLS decisions are fully decentralized, enabling individual load centers to quickly react to the specific contingency using readily available local measurements. Numerical studies on the IEEE 14-bus system have demonstrated the effectiveness of our scalable OLS design for real-time responses to severe grid emergency events.

Appliance Level Short-term Load Forecasting via Recurrent Neural Network

Accurate load forecasting is critical for electricity market operations and other real-time decision-making tasks in power systems. This paper considers the short-term load forecasting (STLF) problem for residential customers within a community. Existing STLF work mainly focuses on forecasting the aggregated load for either a feeder system or a single customer, but few efforts have been made on forecasting the load at individual appliance level. In this work, we present an STLF algorithm for efficiently predicting the power consumption of individual electrical appliances. The proposed method builds upon a powerful recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture in deep learning, termed as long short-term memory (LSTM). As each appliance has uniquely repetitive consumption patterns, the patterns of prediction error will be tracked such that past prediction errors can be used for improving the final prediction performance. Numerical tests on real-world load datasets demonstrate the improvement of the proposed method over existing LSTM-based method and other benchmark approaches.

Discovering novel drug-supplement interactions using a dietary supplements knowledge graph generated from the biomedical literature

OBJECTIVE: Leverage existing biomedical NLP tools and DS domain terminology to produce a novel and comprehensive knowledge graph containing dietary supplement (DS) information for discovering interactions between DS and drugs, or Drug-Supplement Interactions (DSI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We created SemRepDS (an extension of SemRep), capable of extracting semantic relations from abstracts by leveraging a DS-specific terminology (iDISK) containing 28,884 DS terms not found in the UMLS. PubMed abstracts were processed using SemRepDS to generate semantic relations, which were then filtered using a PubMedBERT-based model to remove incorrect relations before generating our knowledge graph (SuppKG). Two pathways are used to identify potential DS-Drug interactions which are then evaluated by medical professionals for mechanistic plausibility. RESULTS: Comparison analysis found that SemRepDS returned 206.9% more DS relations and 158.5% more DS entities than SemRep. The fine-tuned BERT model obtained an F1 score of 0.8605 and removed 43.86% of the relations, improving the precision of the relations by 26.4% compared to pre-filtering. SuppKG consists of 2,928 DS-specific nodes. Manual review of findings identified 44 (88%) proposed DS-Gene-Drug and 32 (64%) proposed DS-Gene1-Function-Gene2-Drug pathways to be mechanistically plausible. DISCUSSION: The additional relations extracted using SemRepDS generated SuppKG that was used to find plausible DSI not found in the current literature. By the nature of the SuppKG, these interactions are unlikely to have been found using SemRep without the expanded DS terminology. CONCLUSION: We successfully extend SemRep to include DS information and produce SuppKG which can be used to find potential DS-Drug interactions.

Social and behavioral determinants of health in the era of artificial intelligence with electronic health records: A scoping review

Background: There is growing evidence that social and behavioral determinants of health (SBDH) play a substantial effect in a wide range of health outcomes. Electronic health records (EHRs) have been widely employed to conduct observational studies in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). However, there has been little research into how to make the most of SBDH information from EHRs. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in six databases to find relevant peer-reviewed publications that had recently been published. Relevance was determined by screening and evaluating the articles. Based on selected relevant studies, a methodological analysis of AI algorithms leveraging SBDH information in EHR data was provided. Results: Our synthesis was driven by an analysis of SBDH categories, the relationship between SBDH and healthcare-related statuses, and several NLP approaches for extracting SDOH from clinical literature. Discussion: The associations between SBDH and health outcomes are complicated and diverse; several pathways may be involved. Using Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology to support the extraction of SBDH and other clinical ideas simplifies the identification and extraction of essential concepts from clinical data, efficiently unlocks unstructured data, and aids in the resolution of unstructured data-related issues. Conclusion: Despite known associations between SBDH and disease, SBDH factors are rarely investigated as interventions to improve patient outcomes. Gaining knowledge about SBDH and how SBDH data can be collected from EHRs using NLP approaches and predictive models improves the chances of influencing health policy change for patient wellness, and ultimately promoting health and health equity. Substation-Level Grid Topology Optimization Using Bus Splitting

Operations of substation circuit breakers are important for maintenance needs and topology reconfiguration in power systems. Bus splitting is one type of topology change where the two bus bars at a substation can become electrically disconnected under certain actions of circuit breakers. Because these events involve detailed substation modeling, they are typically not considered in routine power system operation and control. In this paper, an improved substation-level topology optimization framework is developed by expanding traditional line switching decisions by breaker-level bus splitting, which can further reduce grid congestion and generation costs. A tight McCormick relaxation is proposed to reformulate the bilinear terms in the resultant optimization problem to linear inequality constraints. Thus, a tractable mixed-integer linear program reformulation is attained that allows for efficient solutions in real-time operations. Numerical studies on the IEEE 14-bus and 118-bus systems demonstrate the computational performance and economic benefits of the proposed topology optimization approach.

Efficient Identification of Bus Split Events Using Synchrophasor Data

Accurate grid topology information is of paramount importance for routine power system operations, while the growing availability of synchrophasor data offers the opportunity to identify topology changes in real time. Identification of bus split events, where the substation becomes electrically disconnected, is becoming increasingly important for maintaining the security of power systems. This paper aims to provide an efficient modeling and monitoring framework for bus split events by using a concise bus-branch representation. The linear sensitivity analysis is first performed to quickly evaluate the grid-wide impact of such events. Furthermore, the synchrophasor data enabled identification problem is formulated by matching the changes in bus phase angles (and possibly line flows). To address the resultant bilinear multiplication involving the binary connectivity variables, the McCormick relaxation technique is leveraged to attain an equivalent mixed-integer linear program reformulation that is efficiently solvable. Numerical studies on the IEEE 14-bus and 300-bus systems demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed identification algorithm towards real-time implementation.

Transmission Switching Under Wind Uncertainty Using Linear Decision Rules

Increasing penetration of wind and renewable generation poses significant challenges to the power system operations and reliability. This paper considers the real-time optimal transmission switching (OTS) problem for determining the generation dispatch and network topology that can account for uncertain energy resources. To efficiently solve the resultant two-stage stochastic program, we propose a tractable linear decision rule (LDR) based approximation solution that can eliminate the uncertainty variables and lead to fixed number of constraints. The proposed LDR approach can guarantee feasibility, and significantly reduces the computational complexity of existing approaches that grows with the number of randomly generated samples of uncertainty. Numerical studies on IEEE test cases demonstrate the high approximation accuracy of the proposed LDR solution and its computational efficiency for real-time OTS implementations.

False Analog Data Injection Attack Towards Topology Errors: Formulation and Feasibility Analysis

In this paper, we propose a class of false analog data injection attack that can misguide the system as if topology errors had occurred. By utilizing the measurement redundancy with respect to the state variables, the adversary who knows the system configuration is shown to be capable of computing the corresponding measurement value with the intentionally misguided topology. The attack is designed such that the state as well as residue distribution after state estimation will converge to those in the system with a topology error. It is shown that the attack can be launched even if the attacker is constrained to some specific meters. The attack is detrimental to the system since manipulation of analog data will lead to a forged digital topology status, and the state after the error is identified and modified will be significantly biased with the intended wrong topology. The feasibility of the proposed attack is demonstrated with an IEEE 14-bus system.

Exploration of Graph Computing in Power System State Estimation

With the increased complexity of power systems due to the integration of smart grid technologies and renewable energy resources, more frequent changes have been introduced to system status, and the traditional serial mode of state estimation algorithm cannot well meet the restrict time-constrained requirement for the future dynamic power grid, even with advanced computer hardware. To guarantee the grid reliability and minimize the impacts caused by system status fluctuations, a fast, even SCADA-rate, state estimator is urgently needed. In this paper, a graph based power system modeling is firstly explored and a graph computing based state estimation is proposed to speed up its performance. The power system is represented by a graph, which is a collection of vertices and edges, and the measurements are attributes of vertices and edges. Each vertex can independently implement local computation, like formulations of the node-based H matrix, gain matrix and righthand-side (RHS) vector, only with the information on its connected edges and neighboring vertices. Then, by taking advantages of graph database, these node-based data are conveniently collected and stored in the compressed sparse row (CSR) format avoiding the complexity and heaviness introduced by the sparse matrices. With communications and synchronization, centralized computation of solving the weighted least square (WLS) state estimation is completed with hierarchical parallel computing. The proposed strategy is implemented on a graph database platform. The testing results of IEEE 14-bus, IEEE 118-bus systems and a provincial system in China verify the accuracy and high-performance of the proposed methodology.
