The quadrupole mechanism of hole spin relaxation

For spin-3/2 holes the anisotropic part of the instantaneous Luttinger Hamiltonian can be represented as an effective quadrupole coupling. We investigate the hole spin relaxation process induced by nonadiabatic fluctuations of this interaction. The obtained analytical solution of the stochastic Liouville equation describes the polarization decay of spin-3/2 holes in all regimes of momentum scattering: from collision-dominated to ballistic. Our results create the basis for quantitative interpretation of recent experiments and elucidate the striking difference between the hole spin relaxation process in bulk crystals and 2D semiconductor nanostructures.

Sudden modulation theory of hole spin-3/2 relaxation

We investigate the hole spin-3/2 relaxation process induced by nonadiabatic stochastic modulations of the instantaneous Luttinger Hamiltonian. The theory allows to consider fluctuations of both the direction and the magnitude of a hole wave vector in all regimes of momentum scattering: from collision-dominated to ballistic.

Coupling of electron rotation with spin in semiconductors

Account of an intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in the valence bands of common semiconductors yields the scalar spin-orbit-rotation term in the effective-mass Hamiltonian of the conduction-band electron. This result is obtained within the multiband envelope function approximation. Fundamentally, the spin-orbit-rotation coupling can be described in purely geometric terms as a consequence of the difference in the Berry phase acquired by the components of the spin-orbitally mixed Kramers-doublet during its cyclic evolution in the reciprocal momentum space.

Coriolis force, geometric phase, and spin-electric coupling in semiconductors

We consider the response of an effective spin of a charge carrier to an adiabatic rotation of its crystal momentum induced by electric field. This rotation gives rise to Coriolis pseudo-force that is responsible for torque acting on the orbital momentum of a particle. Mediated by a spin-orbit coupling in the valence band this perturbation leads to a spin-electric coupling that may affect the coherent transport properties of a charge carrier and cause a spin precession in zero magnetic fields. In the static uniform electric field the derived effective spin-Hamiltonians of the carriers in the conduction and light hole bands are homologous to the Rashba Hamiltonian. These effects may be also interpreted as a manifestation of, in general, a non-Abelian gauge potential and can be described in purely geometric terms as a consequence of the corresponding holonomy. We demonstrate that in the conduction band the strength of the associated covariant gauge field is proportional to the effective electron g-tensor and is controllable by gate fields or a strain applied to the crystal.

Nonequilibrium electron spin polarization in a double quantum dot. Lande mechanism

In moderately strong magnetic fields, the difference in Lande g-factors in each of the dots of a coupled double quantum dot device may induce oscillations between singlet and triplet states of the entangled electron pair and lead to a nonequilibrium electron spin polarization. We will show that this polarization may partially survive the rapid inhomogeneous decoherence due to random nuclear magnetic fields.

Geometric dephasing of holes in two-dimensional nanostructures

We will show that in zero magnetic field the rate of the geometric spin dephasing of a light hole in two-dimensional nanostructures is equal to the rate of the one-dimensional orientational relaxation of its crystal momentum. In contrast, this process is singularly ineffective for heavy holes.

Single-hole spin dephasing in bulk crystals

Decoherence of the hole angular momentum in bulk crystals is described within the framework of non-Markovian stochastic theory. We present the analytical result for the rate of this process. The derivation is based on the new formulation of the multiband Luttinger-Kohn Hamiltonian that reflects the dynamic symmetry of the system.

Geometric spin dephasing of carriers with strong spin-orbit coupling

It has been shown that the geometric Berry-phase shift acquired by the components of the light hole (LH) spinor during an adiabatic collision is equal to the angular distance traveled by the wave vector. For LH, geometric dephasing leads to equality between angular and crystal momentum relaxation time. I will show that the same mechanism is completely ineffective for heavy and split-off holes in bulk crystals, and in electron QSLs in spherical nanostructures. This non-model result suggests that these carriers may be considered as the stern candidates for implementation of dissipationless spin currents (Spin Hall effect) and fault-tolerant qubits.

Geometric origin of Eliott relation

It has been shown that the Elliott relation results from the random acquisition of geometric phases and represents a special case of a more general situation - relaxation of the pseudo spin-1/2 induced by stochastic gauge fields.
