Unusual half-metallic state in unconventional magnets

Half-metallic ferromagnets exhibit a gap in the density of states for one spin projection while remaining gapless for the opposite spin. We show that in helimagnets an unusual half-metallic state can exist, where the spin projection that experiences the gap is determined by the direction of the wave vector. This state originates from the nontrivial topology of the band structure, specifically from the dispersion forming a multi-sheeted covering over the Brillouin zone. We present two-dimensional tight-binding models for $p$-wave and $f$-wave half metals. These structures can be realized in crystalline and van der Waals systems. The complex band structure of the unusual $p$-wave half metal in nanostructures is also discussed. In a quantum well, a standing wave with a helical spin structure is formed, and a persistent spin current exists.

Magnetic structure and phase diagram in a spin-chain system: Ca$_3$Co$_2$O$_6$

The low-temperature structure of the frustrated spin-chain compound Ca$_3$Co$_2$O$_6$ is determined by the ground state of the 2D Ising model on the triangular lattice. At high-temperatures it transforms to the honeycomb magnetic structure. It is shown that the crossover between the two magnetic structures at 12 K arises from the entropy accumulated in the disordered chains. This interpretation is in an agreement with the experimental data. General rules for for the phase diagram of frustrated Ising chain compounds are formulated.

Step-like magnetization in a spin-chain system: Ca3Co2O6

Due to a ferromagnetic in-chain coupling between Co$^{3+}$ ions at trigonal sites, chains Co$_2$O$_6$ are considered as large rigid spin moments. The antiferromagnetic Ising model on the triangular lattice is applied to describe an interchain ordering. An evolution of metastable states in a sweeping magnetic field is investigated by the single-flip technique. At the first approximation two steps in the magnetization curve and a plateau at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization are found. Four steps in magnetization are determined in high-order approximations in agreement with experimental results.
