Integrable systems on quad-graphs

We consider general integrable systems on graphs as discrete flat connections with the values in loop groups. We argue that a certain class of graphs is of a special importance in this respect, namely quad-graphs, the cellular decompositions of oriented surfaces with all two-cells being quadrilateral. We establish a relation between integrable systems on quad-graphs and discrete systems of the Toda type on graphs. We propose a simple and general procedure for deriving discrete zero curvature representations for integrable systems on quad-graphs, based on the principle of the three-dimensional consistency. Thus, finding a zero curvature representation is put on an algorithmic basis and does not rely on the guesswork anymore. Several examples of integrable systems on quad-graphs are considered in detail, their geometric interpretation is given in terms of circle patterns.

r-matrices for relativistic deformations of integrable systems

We include the relativistic lattice KP hierarchy, introduced by Gibbons and Kupershmidt, into the $r$-matrix framework. An $r$-matrix account of the nonrelativistic lattice KP hierarchy is also provided for the reader's convenience. All relativistic constructions are regular one-parameter perturbations of the nonrelativistic ones. We derive in a simple way the linear Hamiltonian structure of the relativistic lattice KP, and find for the first time its quadratic Hamiltonian structure. Amasingly, the latter turns out to coincide with its nonrelativistic counterpart (a phenomenon, known previously only for the simplest case of the relativistic Toda lattice).

The motion of a rigid body in a quadratic potential: an integrable discretization

The motion of a rigid body in a quadratic potential is an important example of an integrable Hamiltonian system on a dual to a semidirect product Lie algebra so(n) x Symm(n). We give a Lagrangian derivation of the corresponding equations of motion, and introduce a discrete time analog of this system. The construction is based on the discrete time Lagrangian mechanics on Lie groups, accompanied with the discrete time Lagrangian reduction. The resulting multi-valued map (correspondence) on the dual to so(n) x Symm(n) is Poisson with respect to the Lie-Poisson bracket, and is also completely integrable. We find a Lax representation based on matrix factorisations, in the spirit of Veselov-Moser.

Discrete Lagrangian reduction, discrete Euler-Poincare equations, and semidirect products

A discrete version of Lagrangian reduction is developed in the context of discrete time Lagrangian systems on $G\times G$, where $G$ is a Lie group. We consider the case when the Lagrange function is invariant with respect to the action of an isotropy subgroup of a fixed element in the representation space of $G$. In this context the reduction of the discrete Euler-Lagrange equations is shown to lead to the so called discrete Euler-Poincaré equations. A constrained variational principle is derived. The Legendre transformation of the discrete Euler-Poincaré equations leads to discrete Hamiltonian (Lie-Poisson) systems on a dual space to a semiproduct Lie algebra.

Miura transformations for Toda--type integrable systems, with applications to the problem of integrable discretizations

We study lattice Miura transformations for the Toda and Volterra lattices, relativistic Toda and Volterra lattices, and their modifications. In particular, we give three successive modifications for the Toda lattice, two for the Volterra lattice and for the relativistic Toda lattice, and one for the relativistic Volterra lattice. We discuss Poisson properties of the Miura transformations, their permutability properties, and their role as localizing changes of variables in the theory of integrable discretizations.

What is the relativistic Volterra lattice?

We develop a systematic procedure of finding integrable ''relativistic'' (regular one-parameter) deformations for integrable lattice systems. Our procedure is based on the integrable time discretizations and consists of three steps. First, for a given system one finds a local discretization living in the same hierarchy. Second, one considers this discretization as a particular Cauchy problem for a certain 2-dimensional lattice equation, and then looks for another meaningful Cauchy problems, which can be, in turn, interpreted as new discrete time systems. Third, one has to identify integrable hierarchies to which these new discrete time systems belong. These novel hierarchies are called then ''relativistic'', the small time step $h$ playing the role of inverse speed of light. We apply this procedure to the Toda lattice (and recover the well-known relativistic Toda lattice), as well as to the Volterra lattice and a certain Bogoyavlensky lattice, for which the ''relativistic'' deformations were not known previously.

Integrable discretizations for lattice systems: local equations of motion and their Hamiltonian properties

We develop the approach to the problem of integrable discretization based on the notion of $r$--matrix hierarchies. One of its basic features is the coincidence of Lax matrices of discretized systems with the Lax matrices of the underlying continuous time systems. A common feature of the discretizations obtained in this approach is non--locality. We demonstrate how to overcome this drawback. Namely, we introduce the notion of localizing changes of variables and construct such changes of variables for a large number of examples, including the Toda and the relativistic Toda lattices, the Volterra lattice and its integrable perturbation, the second flows of the Toda and of the Volterra hierarchies, the modified Volterra lattice, the Belov-Chaltikian lattice, the Bogoyavlensky lattices, the Bruschi-Ragnisco lattice. We also introduce a novel class of constrained lattice KP systems, discretize all of them, and find the corresponding localizing change of variables. Pulling back the differential equations of motion under the localizing changes of variables, we find also (sometimes novel) integrable one-parameter perturbations of integrable lattice systems. Poisson properties of the localizing changes of variables are also studied: they produce interesting one-parameter deformations of the known Poisson algebras.

On an integrable discretization of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation

We find time discretizations for the two ''second flows'' of the Ablowitz-Ladik hierachy. These discretizations are described by local equations of motion, as opposed to the previously known ones, due to Taha and Ablowitz. Certain superpositions of our maps allow a one-field reduction and serve therefore as valid space-time discretizations of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. We expect the performance of these discretizations to be much better then that of the Taha-Ablowitz scheme. The way of finding interpolating Hamiltonians for our maps is also indicated, as well as the solution of an initial value problem in terms of matrix factorizations.

A note on the integrable discretization of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We revisit integrable discretizations for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation due to Ablowitz and Ladik. We demonstrate how their main drawback, the non-locality, can be overcome. Namely, we factorize the non-local difference scheme into the product of local ones. This must improve the performance of the scheme in the numerical computations dramatically. Using the equivalence of the Ablowitz--Ladik and the relativistic Toda hierarchies, we find the interpolating Hamiltonians for the local schemes and show how to solve them in terms of matrix factorizations.

Nonlocal quadratic Poisson algebras, monodromy map, and Bogoyavlensky lattices

A new Lax representation for the Bogoyavlensky lattice is found, its $r$--matrix interpretation is elaborated. The $r$--matrix structure turns out to be related to a highly nonlocal quadratic Poisson structure on a direct sum of associative algebras. The theory of such nonlocal structures is developed, the Poisson property of the monodromy map is worked out in the most general situation. Some problems concerning the duality of Lax representations are raised.

New integrable systems related to the relativistic Toda lattice

New integrable lattice systems are introduced, their different integrable discretization are obtained. Bäcklund transformations between these new systems and the relativistic Toda lattice (in the both continuous and discrete time formulations) are established.

Why are the rational and hyperbolic Ruijsenaars-Schneider hierarchies governed by the same R-operators as the Calogero-Moser ones?

We demonstrate that in a certain gauge the Lax matrices of the rational and hyperbolic Ruijsenaars--Schneider models have a quadratic $r$-matrix Poisson bracket which is an exact quadratization of the linear $r$--matrix Poisson bracket of the Calogero--Moser models. This phenomenon is explained by a geometric derivation of Lax equations for arbitrary flows of both hierarchies, which turn out to be governed by the same dynamical $R$--operator.

A discrete time peakons lattice

A discretization of the peakons lattice is introduced, belonging to the same hierarchy as the continuous--time system. The construction examplifies the general scheme for integrable discretization of systems on Lie algebras with $r$--matrix Poisson brackets. An initial value problem for the difference equations is solved in terms of a factorization problem in a group. Interpolating Hamiltonian flow is found. A variational (Lagrangian) formulation is also given.

A discrete time relativistic Toda lattice

Four integrable symplectic maps approximating two Hamiltonian flows from the relativistic Toda hierarchy are introduced. They are demostrated to belong to the same hierarchy and to examplify the general scheme for symplectic maps on groups equiped with quadratic Poisson brackets. The initial value problem for the difference equations is solved in terms of a factorization problem in a group. Interpolating Hamiltonian flows are found for all the maps.
