Random attractors and nonergodic attractors for diffusions with degeneracies

We consider a diffusion on a bounded domain, assuming that the system is irreducible inside the domain and that the diffusion has varying degree of degeneracy on the domain's boundary. The long-term statistical properties of typical trajectories started inside the domain may be governed by one invariant measure or more than one invariant measure. We describe various possible scenarios. In dimensions 1 and 2 under boundary hyperbolicity assumptions, we give a complete classification of the limiting behavior and answer the question whether sequential averaging involving more than one invariant distribution occurs. In all cases, we compute the set of weak limit points of empirical measures. Our hitting-time estimates used to prove transience or recurrence are based on a new version of the Foster-Lyapunov technique. Extensions to nonhyperbolic boundaries and higher dimensions are discussed and an application to growth rates in scalable networks is given.

Last passage percolation in a product-type random environment

We consider a last passage percolation model in dimension $1+1$ with potential given by the product of a spatial i.i.d. potential with symmetric bounded distribution and an independent i.i.d. in time sequence of signs. We assume that the density of the spatial potential near the edge of its support behaves as a power, with exponent $κ>-1$. We investigate the linear growth rate of the actions of optimal point-to-point lazy random walk paths as a function of the path slope and describe the structure of the resulting shape function. It has a corner at $0$ and, although its restriction to positive slopes cannot be linear, we prove that it has a flat edge near $0$ if $κ>0$. For optimal point-to-line paths, we study their actions and locations of favorable edges that the paths tends to reach and stay at. Under an additional assumption on the time it takes for the optimal path to reach the favorable location, we prove that appropriately normalized actions converge to a limiting distribution that can be viewed as a counterpart of the Tracy-Widom law. Since the scaling exponent and the limiting distribution depend only on the parameter $κ$, our results provide a description of a new universality class.

Differentiability of limit shapes in continuous first passage percolation models

We introduce and study a class of abstract continuous action minimization problems that generalize continuous first and last passage percolation. In this class of models a limit shape exists. Our main result provides a framework under which that limit shape can be shown to be differentiable. We then describe examples of continuous first passage percolation models that fit into this framework. The first example is of a family of Riemannian first passage percolation models and the second is a discrete time model based on Poissonian points.

Differentiability of the Shape Function for Directed Polymers in Continuous Space

For directed polymers, the shape function computes the limiting average energy accrued by paths with a given average slope. We prove that, for a large family of directed polymer models in discrete time and continuous space in dimension $1+1$, for positive and zero temperature, the shape function is differentiable with respect to the slope on the entire real line.

Strongly mixing smooth planar vector field without asymptotic directions

We use a Voronoi-type tessellation based on a compound Poisson point process to construct a polynomially mixing stationary random smooth planar vector field with bounded nonnegative components such that, with probability one, none of the associated integral curves possess an asymptotic direction.

Joint localization of directed polymers

We consider $(1+1)$-dimensional directed polymers in a random potential and provide sufficient conditions guaranteeing joint localization. Joint localization means that for typical realizations of the environment, and for polymers started at different starting points, all the associated endpoint distributions localize in a common random region that does not grow with the length of the polymer. In particular, we prove that joint localization holds when the reference random walk of the polymer model is either a simple symmetric lattice walk or a Gaussian random walk. We also prove that the very strong disorder property holds for a large class of space-continuous polymer models, implying the usual single polymer localization.

Rare transitions in noisy heteroclinic networks

We study small white noise perturbations of planar dynamical systems with heteroclinic networks in the limit of vanishing noise. We show that the probabilities of transitions between various cells that the network tessellates the plane into decay as powers of the noise magnitude. We show that the most likely scenario for the realization of these rare transition events involves spending atypically long times in the neighborhoods of certain saddle points of the network. We describe the hierarchy of time scales and clusters of accessibility associated with these rare transition events. We discuss applications of our results to homogenization problems and to the invariant distribution asymptotics. At the core of our results are local limit theorems for exit distributions obtained via methods of Malliavin calculus.

Dynamic polymers: invariant measures and ordering by noise

We develop a dynamical approach to infinite volume directed polymer measures in random environments. We define polymer dynamics in 1+1 dimension as a stochastic gradient flow on polymers pinned at the origin, for energy involving quadratic nearest neighbor interaction and local interaction with random environment. We prove existence and uniqueness of the solution, continuity of the flow, the order-preserving property with respect to the coordinatewise partial order, and the invariance of the asymptotic slope. We establish ordering by noise which means that if two initial conditions have distinct slopes, then the associated solutions eventually get ordered coordinatewise. This, along with the shear-invariance property and existing results on static infinite volume polymer measures, allows to prove that for a fixed asymptotic slope and almost every realization of the environment, the polymer dynamics has a unique invariant distribution given by a unique infinite volume polymer measure, and, moreover, One Force -- One Solution principle holds. We also prove that every polymer measure is concentrated on paths with well-defined asymptotic slopes and give an estimate on deviations from straight lines.

Long exit times near a repelling equilibrium

For a smooth vector field in a neighborhood of a critical point with all positive eigenvalues of the linearization, we consider the associated dynamics perturbed by white noise. Using Malliavin calculus tools, we obtain polynomial asymptotics for probabilities of atypically long exit times in the vanishing noise limit.

Atypical exit events near a repelling equilibrium

We consider exit problems for small white noise perturbations of a dynamical system generated by a vector field, and a domain containing a critical point with all positive eigenvalues of linearization. We prove that, in the vanishing noise limit, the probability of exit through a generic set on the boundary is asymptotically polynomial in the noise strength, with exponent depending on the mutual position of the set and the flag of the invariant manifolds associated with the top eigenvalues. Furthermore, we compute the limiting exit distributions conditioned on atypical exit events of polynomially small probability and show that the limits are Radon--Nikodym equivalent to volume measures on certain manifolds that we construct. This situation is in sharp contrast with the large deviation picture where the limiting conditional distributions are point masses.

Singularities of invariant densities for random switching between two linear ODEs in 2D

We consider a planar dynamical system generated by two stable linear vector fields with distinct fixed points and random switching between them. We characterize singularities of the invariant density in terms of the switching rates and contraction rates. We prove boundedness away from those singularities. We also discuss some motivating biological examples.

Punctuated equilibrium as the default mode of evolution of large populations on fitness landscapes dominated by saddle points in the weak-mutation limit

Punctuated equilibrium is a mode of evolution in which phenetic change occurs in rapid bursts that are separated by much longer intervals of stasis during which mutations accumulate but no major phenotypic change occurs. Punctuated equilibrium has been originally proposed within the framework of paleobiology, to explain the lack of transitional forms that is typical of the fossil record. Theoretically, punctuated equilibrium has been linked to self-organized criticality (SOC), a model in which the size of avalanches in an evolving system is power-law distributed, resulting in increasing rarity of major events. We show here that, under the weak-mutation limit, a large population would spend most of the time in stasis in the vicinity of saddle points in the fitness landscape. The periods of stasis are punctuated by fast transitions, in lnNe time (Ne, effective population size), when a new beneficial mutation is fixed in the evolving population, which moves to a different saddle, or on much rarer occasions, from a saddle to a local peak. Thus, punctuated equilibrium is the default mode of evolution under a simple model that does not involve SOC or other special conditions.

Localization of directed polymers in continuous space

The first main goal of this article is to give a new metrization of the Mukherjee--Varadhan topology, recently introduced as a translation-invariant compactification of the space of probability measures on Euclidean spaces. This new metrization allows us to achieve our second goal which is to extend the recent program of Bates and Chatterjee on localization for the endpoint distribution of discrete directed polymers to polymers based on general random walks in Euclidean spaces. Following their strategy, we study the asymptotic behavior of the endpoint distribution update map and study the set of its distributional fixed points satisfying a variational principle. We show that the distributdion concentrated on the zero measure is a unique element in this set if and only if the system is in the high temperature regime. This enables us to prove that the asymptotic clustering (a natural continuous analogue of the asymptotic pure atomicity property) holds in the low temperature regime and that the endpoint distribution is geometrically localized with positive density if and only if the system is in the low temperature regime.

Tails of exit times from unstable equilibria on the line

For a one-dimensional smooth vector field in a neighborhood of an unstable equilibrium, we consider the associated dynamics perturbed by small noise. We give a revealing elementary proof of a result proved earlier using heavy machinery from Malliavin calculus. In particular, we obtain precise vanishing noise asymptotics for the tail of the exit time and for the exit distribution conditioned on atypically long exits.

Exit time asymptotics for dynamical systems with fast random switching near an unstable equilibrium

We consider the exit problem for a one-dimensional system with random switching near an unstable equilibrium point of the averaged drift. In the infinite switching rate limit, we show that the exit time satisfies a limit theorem with a logarithmic deterministic term and a random correction converging in distribution. Thus this setting is in the universality class of the unstable equilibrium exit under small white-noise perturbations.

Invariant densities for dynamical systems with random switching

We consider a non-autonomous ordinary differential equation on a smooth manifold, with right-hand side that randomly switches between the elements of a finite family of smooth vector fields. For the resulting random dynamical system, we show that Hörmander type hypoellipticity conditions are sufficient for uniqueness and absolute continuity of an invariant measure.
