Current induced vortex superlattices in nanomagnets

Influence of the spin-transfer torque on the vortex state magnetic nanodisk is studied numerically via Slonczewski-Berger mechanism. The existence of a critical current is determined for the case of same-directed electrical current, its spin polarization and polarity of the vortex. The critical current separates two regimes: (i) deformed but static vortex state and (ii) essentially dynamic state under which the spatio-temporal periodic structures can appear. The structure is a stable vortex-antivortex lattice. Symmetry of the lattice depends on the applied current value and for high currents (close to saturation) only square lattices are observed. General relations for sizes of the stable lattice is obtained analytically.

Off-centered immobile magnetic vortex under influence of spin-transfer torque

Equilibrium magnetization distribution of the vortex state magnetic nanoparticle is affected by the influence of the spin-transfer torque: an off-center out--of--plane vortex appears in the case of the disk shape particle and pure planar vortex in the case of asymmetric ring shape particle. The spin current causes extra out-of-plane magnetization structures identical to well known dip structures for the moving vortex. The shape of the dip structure depends on the current strength and value of the off-center displacement and it does not depend on the vortex polarity. The critical current depends on the nanodot thickness.

Multiple vortex-antivortex pair generation in magnetic nanodots

The interaction of a magnetic vortex with a rotating magnetic field causes the nucleation of a vortex--antivortex pair leading to a vortex polarity switching. The key point of this process is the creation of a dip, which can be interpreted as a nonlinear resonance in the system of certain magnon modes with nonlinear coupling. The usually observed single-dip structure is a particular case of a multidip structure. The dynamics of the structure with $n$ dips is described as the dynamics of nonlinearly coupled modes with azimuthal numbers $m=0,\pm n,\pm 2n$. The multidip structure with arbitrary number of vortex antivortex pairs can be obtained in vortex-state nanodisk using a space- and time-varying magnetic field. A scheme of a possible experimental setup for multidip structure generation is proposed.

Can immobile magnetic vortex nucleate a vortex-antivortex pair?

It is shown that under the action of rotating magnetic field an immobile vortex, contrary to a general belief, can nucleate a vortex-antivortex pair and switch its polarity. Two different kinds of OOMMF micromagnetic modeling are used: (i) the original vortex is pinned by the highly--anisotropic easy-axes impurity at the disk center, (ii) the vortex is pinned by artificially fixing the magnetization inside the vortex core in the planar vortex distribution. In both types of simulations a dip creation with a consequent vortex-antivortex pair nucleation is observed. Polarity switching occurs in the former case only. Our analytical approach is based on the transformation to the rotating frame of reference, both in the real space and in the magnetization space, and on the observation that the physical reason for the dip creation is softening of the dipole magnon mode due to magnetic field rotation.

Controllable switching of vortex chirality in magnetic nanodisks by a field pulse

We propose a way of fast switching the chirality in a magnetic nanodisk by applying a field pulse. To break the symmetry with respect to clockwise or counterclockwise chirality a mask is added by which an inhomogeneous field influences the vortex state of a nanodisk. Using numerical spin--lattice simulations we demonstrate that chirality can be controllably switched by a field pulse, whose intensity is above some critical value. A mathematical definition for the chirality of an arbitrary shaped particle is proposed.

Switching of the vortex polarity in a magnetic nanodisk by a DC current

We study the dynamics of a vortex state nanodisk due to a dc spin current, perpendicular to the disk plane. The irreversible switching of the vortex polarity takes place above some threshold current. The detailed description of these processes is obtained by spin-lattice simulations.

Effective anisotropy of thin nanomagnets: beyond the surface anisotropy approach

We study the effective anisotropy induced in thin nanomagnets by the nonlocal demagnetization field (dipole-dipole interaction). Assuming a magnetization independent of the thickness coordinate, we reduce the energy to an inhomogeneneous onsite anisotropy. Vortex solutions exist and are ground states for this model. We illustrate our approach for a disk and a square geometry. In particular, we obtain good agreement between spin-lattice simulations with this effective anisotropy and micromagnetic simulations.

Vortex polarity switching by a spin--polarized current

The spin-transfer effect is investigated for the vortex state of a magnetic nanodot. A spin current is shown to act similarly to an effective magnetic field perpendicular to the nanodot. Then a vortex with magnetization (polarity) parallel to the current polarization is energetically favorable. Following a simple energy analysis and using direct spin--lattice simulations, we predict the polarity switching of a vortex. For magnetic storage devices, an electric current is more effective to switch the polarity of a vortex in a nanodot than the magnetic field.

Vortex motion in a finite-size easy-plane ferromagnet and application to a nanodot

We study the motion of a non-planar vortex in a circular easy-plane ferromagnet, which imitates a magnetic nanodot. Analysis was done using numerical simulations and a new collective variable theory which includes the coupling of Goldstone-like mode with the vortex center. Without magnetic field the vortex follows a spiral orbit which we calculate. When a rotating in-plane magnetic field is included, the vortex tends to a stable limit cycle which exists in a significant range of field amplitude B and frequency $ω$ for a given system size L. For a fixed $ω$, the radius R of the orbital motion is proportional to L while the orbital frequency $Ω$ varies as 1/L and is significantly smaller than $ω$. Since the limit cycle is caused by the interplay between the magnetization and the vortex motion, the internal mode is essential in the collective variable theory which then gives the correct estimate and dependency for the orbit radius $R\sim B L/ω$. Using this simple theory we indicate how an ac magnetic field can be used to control vortices observed in real magnetic nanodots.

Thermal diffusion of supersonic solitons in an anharmonic chain of atoms

We study the non-equilibrium diffusion dynamics of supersonic lattice solitons in a classical chain of atoms with nearest-neighbor interactions coupled to a heat bath. As a specific example we choose an interaction with cubic anharmonicity. The coupling between the system and a thermal bath with a given temperature is made by adding noise, delta-correlated in time and space, and damping to the set of discrete equations of motion. Working in the continuum limit and changing to the sound velocity frame we derive a Korteweg-de Vries equation with noise and damping. We apply a collective coordinate approach which yields two stochastic ODEs which are solved approximately by a perturbation analysis. This finally yields analytical expressions for the variances of the soliton position and velocity. We perform Langevin dynamics simulations for the original discrete system which fully confirm the predictions of our analytical calculations, namely noise-induced superdiffusive behavior which scales with the temperature and depends strongly on the initial soliton velocity. A normal diffusion behavior is observed for very low-energy solitons where the noise-induced phonons also make a significant contribution to the soliton diffusion.
