Quantum theta functions and Gabor frames for modulation spaces

Representations of the celebrated Heisenberg commutation relations in quantum mechanics and their exponentiated versions form the starting point for a number of basic constructions, both in mathematics and mathematical physics (geometric quantization, quantum tori, classical and quantum theta functions) and signal analysis (Gabor analysis). In this paper we try to bridge the two communities, represented by the two co--authors: that of noncommutative geometry and that of signal analysis. After providing a brief comparative dictionary of the two languages, we will show e.g. that the Janssen representation of Gabor frames with generalized Gaussians as Gabor atoms yields in a natural way quantum theta functions, and that the Rieffel scalar product and associativity relations underlie both the functional equations for quantum thetas and the Fundamental Identity of Gabor analysis.

Stability Conditions, Wall-crossing and weighted Gromov-Witten Invariants

We extend B. Hassett's theory of weighted stable pointed curves ([Has03]) to weighted stable maps. The space of stability conditions is described explicitly, and the wall-crossing phenomenon studied. This can be considered as a non-linear analog of the theory of stability conditions in abelian and triangulated categories. We introduce virtual fundamental classes and thus obtain weighted Gromov-Witten invariants. We show that by including gravitational descendants, one obtains an $\LL$-algebra as introduced in [LM04] as a generalization of a cohomological field theory.

The notion of dimension in geometry and algebra

This talk reviews some mathematical and physical ideas related to the notion of dimension. After a brief historical introduction, various modern constructions from fractal geometry, noncommutative geometry, and theoretical physics are invoked and compared.

F-manifolds with flat structure and Dubrovin's duality

This work continues the study of $F$--manifolds $(M,\circ)$, first defined by Hertling and Manin and investigated in [He]. The notion of a compatible flat structure $\nabla$ is introduced, and it is shown that many constructions known for Frobenius manifolds do not in fact require invariant metrics and can be developed for all such triples $(M,\circ ,\nabla).$ In particular, we extend and generalize recent Dubrovin's duality.

Von Zahlen und Figuren

Talk at the International Conference ``Géométrie au vingtième ciècle: 1930--2000'', Paris, Institut Henri Poincaré, Sept. 2001. The title is a homage to Hans Rademacher and Otto Toeplitz whose book fascinated the author many years ago.

Real Multiplication and noncommutative geometry

Classical theory of Complex Multiplication (CM) shows that all abelian extensions of a complex quadratic field $K$ are generated by the values of appropriate modular functions at the points of finite order of elliptic curves whose endomorphism rings are orders in $K$. For real quadratic fields, a similar description is not known. However, the relevant (still unproved) case of Stark conjectures ([St1]) strongly suggests that such a description must exist. In this paper we propose to use two--dimensional quantum tori corresponding to real quadratic irrationalities as a replacement of elliptic curves with complex multiplication. We discuss some basic constructions of the theory of quantum tori from the perspective of this Real Multiplication (RM) research project.

Holography principle and arithmetic of algebraic curves

According to the holography principle (due to G.`t Hooft, L. Susskind, J. Maldacena, et al.), quantum gravity and string theory on certain manifolds with boundary can be studied in terms of a conformal field theory on the boundary. Only a few mathematically exact results corroborating this exciting program are known. In this paper we interpret from this perspective several constructions which arose initially in the arithmetic geometry of algebraic curves. We show that the relation between hyperbolic geometry and Arakelov geometry at arithmetic infinity involves exactly the same geometric data as the Euclidean AdS_3 holography of black holes. Moreover, in the case of Euclidean AdS_2 holography, we present some results on bulk/boundary correspondence where the boundary is a non-commutative space.

Continued fractions, modular symbols, and non-commutative geometry

Using techniques introduced by D. Mayer, we prove an extension of the classical Gauss-Kuzmin theorem about the distribution of continued fractions, which in particular allows one to take into account some congruence properties of successive convergents. This result has an application to the Mixmaster Universe model in general relativity. We then study some averages involving modular symbols and show that Dirichlet series related to modular forms of weight 2 can be obtained by integrating certain functions on real axis defined in terms of continued fractions. We argue that the quotient $PGL(2,\bold{Z})\setminus\bold{P}^1(\bold{R})$ should be considered as non-commutative modular curve, and show that the modular complex can be seen as a sequence of $K_0$-groups of the related crossed-product $C^*$-algebras. This paper is an expanded version of the previous "On the distribution of continued fractions and modular symbols". The main new features are Section 4 on non-commutative geometry and the modular complex and Section 1.2.2 on the Mixmaster Universe.

Theta functions, quantum tori and Heisenberg groups

A linear algebraic group $G$ is represented by the linear space of its algebraic functions $F(G)$ endowed with multiplication and comultiplication which turn it into a Hopf algebra. Supplying $G$ with a Poisson structure, we get a quantized version $F_q(G)$ which has the same linear structure and comultiplication, but deformed multiplication. This paper develops a similar theory for abelian varieties. A description of abelian varieties $A$ in terms of linear algebra data was given by Mumford: $F(G)$ is replaced by the graded ring of theta functions with symmetric automorphy factors, and comultiplication is replaced by the Mumford morphism $M^*$ acting on pairs of points as $M(x,y)=M(x+y,x-y).$ After supplementing this by a Poisson structure and replacing the classical theta functions by the quantized ones, introduced by the author earlier, we obtain a structure which essentially coincides with the classical one so far as comultiplication is concerned, but has a deformed multiplication which moreover becomes only partial. The classical graded ring is thus replaced by a linear category. Another important difference from the linear case is that abelian varieties with different period groups (for multiplication) and different quantization parameters (for comultiplication) become interconnected after quantization.

Classical computing, quantum computing, and Shor's factoring algorithm

This is an expository talk written for the Bourbaki Seminar. After a brief introduction, Section 1 discusses in the categorical language the structure of the classical deterministic computations. Basic notions of complexity icluding the P/NP problem are reviewed. Section 2 introduces the notion of quantum parallelism and explains the main issues of quantum computing. Section 3 is devoted to four quantum subroutines: initialization, quantum computing of classical Boolean functions, quantum Fourier transform, and Grover's search algorithm. The central Section 4 explains Shor's factoring algorithm. Section 5 relates Kolmogorov's complexity to the spectral properties of computable function. Appendix contributes to the prehistory of quantum computing.

Relations between the correlators of the topological sigma-model coupled to gravity

We prove a new recursive relation between the correlators $< τ_{d_1}γ_1...τ_{d_n}γ_n >_{g,β}$, which together with known relations allows one to express all of them through the full system of Gromov-Witten invariants in the sense of Kontsevich-Manin and the intersection indices of tautological classes on $\bar{M}_{g,n}$, effectively calculable in view of earlier results due to Mumford, Kontsevich, Getzler, and Faber. This relation shows that a linear change of coordinates of the big phase space transforms the potential with gravitational descendants to another function defined completely in terms of the Gromov-Witten correspondence and the intersection theory on $V^n\times\bar{M}_{g,n}$. We then extend the formalism of gravitational descendants from quantum cohomology to more general Frobenius manifolds and Cohomological Field Theories.
