Deterministic quantum state transfer between remote atoms with photon-number superposition states

We propose a protocol for quantum networking based on deterministic quantum state transfer between distant memory nodes using photon-number superposition states (PNSS). In the suggested scheme, the quantum nodes are single atoms confined in high-finesse optical cavities linked by photonic channels. The quantum information written in a superposition of atomic Zeeman states of sending system is faithfully mapped through cavity-assisted Raman scattering onto PNSS of linearly polarized cavity photons. The photons travel to the receiving cavity, where they are coherently absorbed with unit probability creating the same superposition state of the second atom, thus ensuring high-fidelity transfer between distant nodes. We develop this approach at first for photonic qubit and show that this superposition state is no less reliably protected against the propagation losses compared to the single-photon polarization states, whereas the limitation associated with the delivery of more than one photon does not affect the process fidelity. Then, by preserving the advantages of qubits, we extend the developed technique to the case of state transfer by photonic qutrit, which evidently possesses more information capacity. This reliable and efficient scheme promises also a successful distribution of entanglement over long distances in quantum networks.

Coherent-state-induced transparency

We examine electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an ensemble of cold $Λ-$type atoms induced by a quantum control field in multi-mode coherent states and compare it with the transparency created by the classical light of the same intensity. We show that the perfect coincidence is achieved only in the case of a single-mode coherent state, whereas the transparency sharply decreases, when the number of the modes exceeds the mean number of control photons in the medium. The origin of the effect is the modification of photon statistics in the control field with increasing the number of the modes that weakens its interaction with atoms resulting in a strong probe absorption. For the same reason, the probe pulse transforms from EIT-based slow-light into superluminal propagation caused by the absorption.

Shaping coherent excitation of atoms and molecules by a train of ultrashort laser pulses

We propose a mechanism to produce a superposition of atomic and molecular states by a train of ultrashort laser pulses combined with weak control fields. By adjusting the repetition rate of the pump pulses and the intensity of the coupling laser, one can suppress a transition while simultaneously enhancing the desired transitions. As an example, various superpositions of vibrational states of the $K_2$ molecule are shown.

Heralded generation of single photons entangled in multiple temporal modes with controllable waveforms

Time-bin entangled single-photons are highly demanded for long distance quantum communication. We propose a heralded source of tunable narrowband single photons entangled in well-separated multiple temporal modes (time bins) with controllable amplitudes. The detection of a single Stokes photon generated in a cold atomic ensemble via Raman scattering of a weak write pulse heralds the preparation of one spin excitation stored within the atomic medium. A train of read laser pulses deterministically converts the atomic excitation into a single anti-Stokes photon delocalized in multi-time-bins. The waveforms of bins are well-controlled by the read pulse parameters. A scheme to measure the phase coherence across all time bins is suggested.

Coherent propagation of a single photon in a lossless medium: $0π$ pulse formation, slow photon, storage and retrieval in multiple temporal modes

Single-photon coherent optics represents a fundamental importance for the investigation of quantum light-matter interactions. While most work has considered the interaction in the steady-state regime, here we demonstrate that a single-photon pulse shorter than any relaxation time in a medium propagates without energy loss and is consistently transformed into a zero-area pulse. A general analytical solution is found for photon passage through a cold ensemble of $Λ$-type atoms confined inside a hollow core of a single-mode photonic-crystal fiber. We use the robust far off-resonant Raman scheme to control the pulse reshaping by an intense control laser beam and show that in the case of cw control field, for exact two-photon resonance, the outgoing photon displays an oscillating temporal distribution, which is the quantum counterpart of a classical field ringing, while for nonzero two-photon detuning a slow photon is produced. We demonstrate also that a train of readout control pulses coherently recalls the stored photon in many well-separated temporal modes, thus producing time-bin entangled single-photon states. Such states, which allow sharing quantum information among many users, are highly demanded for applications in long-distance quantum communication.

Quantum Theory for Generation of Nonclassical Photon Pairs by a Medium with Coherent Atomic Memory

We present a fully quantum mechanical treatment of recent experiments on creation of collective quantum memory and generation of non-classically correlated photon pairs from an atomic ensemble via the protocol of Duan et al. [Nature {\bf 414,} 413(2001)]. The temporal evolution of photon numbers, photon statistics and cross-correlation between the Stokes and anti-Stokes fields is found by solving the equation of motion for atomic spin-wave excitations. We consider a low-finesse cavity model with collectively enhanced signal-to-noise ratio, which remains still considerably large in the free-space limit. Our results describe analytically the dependence of quantum correlations on spin decoherence time and time-delay between the write and read lasers and reproduce the observed data very well including the generated pulse shapes, strong violation of Cauchy-Schwarz inequality and conditional generation of anti-Stokes single-photon pulse. The theory we developed may serve as a basic approach for quantum description of storage and retrieval of quantum information, especially when the statistical properties of non-classical pulses are studied.
