Continuous and discrete Neumann systems on Stiefel varieties as matrix generalizations of the Jacobi-Mumford systems

We study geometric and algebraic geometric properties of the continuous and discrete Neumann systems on cotangent bundles of Stiefel varieties $V_{n,r}$. The systems are integrable in the non-commutative sense, and by applying a $2r\times 2r$--Lax representation, we show that generic complex invariant manifolds are open subsets of affine (non-compact) Prym varieties on which the complex flow is linear. The characteristics of the varieties and the direction of the flow are calculated explicitly. Next, we construct a family of (multi-valued) integrable discretizations of the Neumann systems and describe them as translations on the Prym varieties, which are written explicitly in terms of divisors of points on the spectral curve. It appears that the systems inherit or naturally generalize the basic properties of the classical Neumann system on $S^{n-1}$ and, therefore, of the Jacobi--Mumford systems: the structure of the Lax matrices, the spectral curve, the equations of motion, linearization on Abelian varieties, and, in the discrete case, the formula for the translation on them.

Sigma-function solution to the general Somos-6 recurrence via hyperelliptic Prym varieties

We construct the explicit solution of the initial value problem for sequences generated by the general Somos-6 recurrence relation, in terms of the Kleinian sigma-function of genus two. For each sequence there is an associated genus two curve $X$, such that iteration of the recurrence corresponds to translation by a fixed vector in the Jacobian of $X$. The construction is based on a Lax pair with a spectral curve $S$ of genus four admitting an involution $σ$ with two fixed points, and the Jacobian of $X$ arises as the Prym variety Prym$(S,σ)$.

Unimodularity and preservation of volumes in nonholonomic mechanics

The equations of motion of a mechanical system subjected to nonholonomic linear constraints can be formulated in terms of a linear almost Poisson structure in a vector bundle. We study the existence of invariant measures for the system in terms of the unimodularity of this structure. In the presence of symmetries, our approach allows us to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an invariant volume, that unify and improve results existing in the literature. We present an algorithm to study the existence of a smooth invariant volume for nonholonomic mechanical systems with symmetry and we apply it to several concrete mechanical examples.

The motion of the 2D hydrodynamic Chaplygin sleigh in the presence of circulation

We consider the motion of a planar rigid body in a potential flow with circulation and subject to a certain nonholonomic constraint. This model is related to the design of underwater vehicles. The equations of motion admit a reduction to a 2-dimensional nonlinear system, which is integrated explicitly. We show that the reduced system comprises both asymptotic and periodic dynamics separated by a critical value of the energy, and give a complete classification of types of the motion. Then we describe the whole variety of the trajectories of the body on the plane.

The generalized Euler-Poinsot rigid body equations: explicit elliptic solutions

The classical Euler--Poinsot case of the rigid body dynamics admits a class of simple but non-trivial integrable generalizations, which modify the Poisson equations describing the motion of the body in space. These generalizations possess first integrals which are polynomial in the angular momenta. We consider the modified Poisson equations as a system of linear equations with elliptic coefficients and show that all the solutions of it are single-valued. By using the vector generalization of the Picard theorem, we derive the solutions explicitly in terms of sigma functions of the corresponding elliptic curve. The solutions are accompanied with a numerical example. We also compare the generalized Poisson equations with % some generalizations of the classical 3rd order Halphen equation.

Three natural mechanical systems on Stiefel varieties

We consider integrable generalizations of the spherical pendulum system to the Stiefel variety $V(n,r)=SO(n)/SO(n-r)$ for a certain metric. For the case of V(n,2) an alternative integrable model of the pendulum is presented. We also describe a system on the Stiefel variety with a four-degree potential. The latter has invariant relations on $T^*V(n,r)$ which provide the complete integrability of the flow reduced on the oriented Grassmannian variety $G^+(n,r)=SO(n)/SO(r)\times SO(n-r)$.

Geodesic Flows and Neumann Systems on Stiefel Varieties. Geometry and Integrability

We study integrable geodesic flows on Stiefel varieties $V_{n,r}=SO(n)/SO(n-r)$ given by the Euclidean, normal (standard), Manakov-type, and Einstein metrics. We also consider natural generalizations of the Neumann systems on $V_{n,r}$ with the above metrics and proves their integrability in the non-commutative sense by presenting compatible Poisson brackets on $(T^*V_{n,r})/SO(r)$. Various reductions of the latter systems are described, in particular, the generalized Neumann system on an oriented Grassmannian $G_{n,r}$ and on a sphere $S^{n-1}$ in presence of Yang-Mills fields or a magnetic monopole field. Apart from the known Lax pair for generalized Neumann systems, an alternative (dual) Lax pair is presented, which enables one to formulate a generalization of the Chasles theorem relating the trajectories of the systems and common linear spaces tangent to confocal quadrics. Additionally, several extensions are considered: the generalized Neumann system on the complex Stiefel variety $W_{n,r}=U(n)/U(n-r)$, the matrix analogs of the double and coupled Neumann systems.

The Hydrodynamic Chaplygin Sleigh

We consider the motion of rigid bodies in a potential fluid subject to certain nonholonomic constraints and show that it is described by Euler--Poincaré--Suslov equations. In the 2-dimensional case, when the constraint is realized by a blade attached to the body, the system provides a hydrodynamic generalization of the Chaplygin sleigh, whose dynamics are studied in detail. Namely, the equations of motion are integrated explicitly and the asymptotic behavior of the system is determined. It is shown how the presence of the fluid brings new features to such a behavior.

Dynamical systems on infinitely sheeted Riemann surfaces

This paper is part of a program that aims to understand the connection between the emergence of chaotic behaviour in dynamical systems in relation with the multi-valuedness of the solutions as functions of complex time $τ$. In this work we consider a family of systems whose solutions can be expressed as the inversion of a single hyperelliptic integral. The associated Riemann surface ${\mathcal R}$ is known to be an infinitely sheeted covering of the complex time plane, ramified at an infinite set of points whose projection in the $τ$-plane is dense. The main novelty of this paper is that the geometrical structure of these infinitely sheeted Riemann surfaces is described in great detail, which allows to study global properties of the flow such as asymptotic behaviour of the solutions, periodic orbits and their stability or sensitive dependence on initial conditions. The results are then compared with a numerical integration of the equations of motion. Following the recent approach of Calogero, the real time trajectories of the system are given by paths on $\mathcal R$ that are projected to a circle on the complex plane $τ$. Due to the branching of $\mathcal R$, the solutions may have different periods or may not be periodic at all.

Quasi-Chaplygin Systems and Nonholonimic Rigid Body Dynamics

We show that the Suslov nonholonomic rigid body problem can be regarded almost everywhere as a generalized Chaplygin system. Furthermore, this provides a new example of a multidimensional nonholonomic system which can be reduced to a Hamiltonian form by means of Chaplygin reducing multiplier. Since we deal with Chaplygin systems in the local sense, the invariant manifolds of the integrable examples are not necessary tori.

Integrable flows and Backlund transformations on extended Stiefel varieties with application to the Euler top on the Lie group SO(3)

We show that the $m$-dimensional Euler--Manakov top on $so^*(m)$ can be represented as a Poisson reduction of an integrable Hamiltonian system on a symplectic extended Stiefel variety $\bar{\cal V}(k,m)$, and present its Lax representation with a rational parameter. We also describe an integrable two-valued symplectic map $\cal B$ on the 4-dimensional variety ${\cal V}(2,3)$. The map admits two different reductions, namely, to the Lie group SO(3) and to the coalgebra $so^*(3)$. The first reduction provides a discretization of the motion of the classical Euler top in space and has a transparent geometric interpretation, which can be regarded as a discrete version of the celebrated Poinsot model of motion and which inherits some properties of another discrete system, the elliptic billiard. The reduction of $\cal B$ to $so^*(3)$ gives a new explicit discretization of the Euler top in the angular momentum space, which preserves first integrals of the continuous system.

Closed geodesics and billiards on quadrics related to elliptic KdV solutions

We consider algebraic geometrical properties of the integrable billiard on a quadric Q with elastic impacts along another quadric confocal to Q. These properties are in sharp contrast with those of the ellipsoidal Birkhoff billiards. Namely, generic complex invariant manifolds are not Abelian varieties, and the billiard map is no more algebraic. A Poncelet-like theorem for such system is known. We give explicit sufficient conditions both for closed geodesics and periodic billiard orbits on Q and discuss their relation with the elliptic KdV solutions and elliptic Calogero system

Discrete Nonholonomic LL Systems on Lie Groups

This paper applies the recently developed theory of discrete nonholonomic mechanics to the study of discrete nonholonomic left-invariant dynamics on Lie groups. The theory is illustrated with the discrete versions of two classical nonholonomic systems, the Suslov top and the Chaplygin sleigh. The preservation of the reduced energy by the discrete flow is observed and the discrete momentum conservation is discussed.

Nonholonomic LR systems as Generalized Chaplygin systems with an Invariant Measure and Geodesic Flows on Homogeneous Spaces

We consider a class of dynamical systems on a Lie group $G$ with a left-invariant metric and right-invariant nonholonomic constraints (so called LR systems) and show that, under a generic condition on the constraints, such systems can be regarded as generalized Chaplygin systems on the principle bundle $G \to Q=G/H$, $H$ being a Lie subgroup. In contrast to generic Chaplygin systems, the reductions of our LR systems onto the homogeneous space $Q$ always possess an invariant measure. We study the case $G=SO(n)$, when LR systems are multidimensional generalizations of the Veselova problem of a nonholonomic rigid body motion, which admit a reduction to systems with an invariant measure on the (co)tangent bundle of Stiefel varieties $V(k,n)$ as the corresponding homogeneous spaces. For $k=1$ and a special choice of the left-invariant metric on SO(n), we prove that under a change of time, the reduced system becomes an integrable Hamiltonian system describing a geodesic flow on the unit sphere $S^{n-1}$. This provides a first example of a nonholonomic system with more than two degrees of freedom for which the celebrated Chaplygin reducibility theorem is applicable. In this case we also explicitly reconstruct the motion on the group SO(n).

The Complex Geometry of Weak Piecewise Smooth Solutions of Integrable Nonlinear PDE's of Shallow Water and Dym Type

An extension of the algebraic-geometric method for nonlinear integrable PDE's is shown to lead to new piecewise smooth weak solutions of a class of $N$-component systems of nonlinear evolution equations. This class includes, among others, equations from the Dym and shallow water equation hierarchies. The main goal of the paper is to give explicit theta-functional solutions of these nonlinear PDE's, which are associated to nonlinear subvarieties of hyperelliptic Jacobians. The main results of the present paper are twofold. First, we exhibit some of the special features of integrable PDE's that admit piecewise smooth weak solutions, which make them different from equations whose solutions are globally meromorphic, such as the KdV equation. Second, we blend the techniques of algebraic geometry and weak solutions of PDE's to gain further insight into, and explicit formulas for, piecewise-smooth finite-gap solutions.
