Quantum hydrodynamics of spinning particles in electromagnetic and torsion fields

We develop a many-particle quantum-hydrodynamical model of fermion matter interacting with the external classical electromagnetic and gravitational/inertial and torsion fields. The consistent hydrodynamical formulation is constructed for the many-particle quantum system of Dirac fermions on the basis of the nonrelativistic Pauli-like equation obtained via the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. With the help of the Madelung decomposition approach, the explicit relations between the microscopic and macroscopic fluid variables are derived. The closed system of equations of quantum hydrodynamics encompasses the continuity equation, and the dynamical equations of the momentum balance and the spin density evolution. The possible experimental manifestations of the torsion in the dynamics of spin waves is discussed.

Electrodynamics in noninertial frames

The electromagnetic theory is considered in the framework of the generally covariant approach, that is applied to the analysis of electromagnetism in noninertial coordinate and frame systems. The special-relat\-ivistic formulation of Maxwell's electrodynamics arises in the flat Minkowski spacetime when the general coordinate transformations are restricted to a class of transformations preserving the Minkowski line element. The particular attention is paid to the analysis of the electromagnetism in the noninertial rotating reference system. For the latter case, the general stationary solution of the Maxwell equations in the absence of the electric current is constructed in terms of the two scalar functions satisfying the Poisson and the biharmonic equations with an arbitrary charge density as a matter source. The classic problem of Schiff is critically revisited.

Demystifying autoparallels in alternative gravity

Autoparallel curves along with geodesic curves can arise as trajectories of physical test bodies. We explicitly derive autoparallels as effective post-Riemannian geometric constructs, and at the same time we argue \emph{against} postulating autoparallels as fundamental equations of motion for test bodies in alternative gravity theories.

Gravitational waves in metric-affine gravity theory

We derive the exact gravitational wave solutions in a general class of quadratic metric-affine gauge gravity models. The Lagrangian includes all possible linear and quadratic invariants constructed from the torsion, nonmetricity and the curvature. The ansatz for the gravitational wave configuration and the properties of the wave solutions are patterned following the corresponding ansatz and the properties of the plane-fronted electromagnetic wave.

Many-particle Quantum Hydrodynamics of Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensates

We develop a novel model of the magnetized spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of neutral atoms, using the method of many-particle quantum hydrodynamic (QHD) and propose an original derivation of the system of continual equations. We consider bosons with a spin-spin interaction and a short range interaction in the first order in the interaction radius, on the of basis of the self-consistent field approximation of the QHD equations. We demonstrate that the dynamics of the fluid velocity and magnetization is determined by a nontrivial modification of the Euler and Landau-Lifshitz equation, and show that a nontrivial modification of the spin density evolution equation contains the spin torque effect that arises from the self-interactions between spins of the bosons. The properties of the dispersion spectrum of collective excitations are described. We obtain the new contribution of the self-interaction of spins in the spin wave spectrum together with the influence of an external magnetic field and spin-spin interactions between polarized particles. The anisotropic spin wave instability is predicted.

Conservation of energy-momentum of matter as the basis for the gauge theory of gravitation

According to Yang \& Mills (1954), a {\it conserved} current and a related rigid (`global') symmetry lie at the foundations of gauge theory. When the rigid symmetry is extended to a {\it local} one, a so-called gauge symmetry, a new interaction emerges as gauge potential $A$; its field strength is $F\sim {\rm curl} A$. In gravity, the conservation of the energy-momentum current of matter and the rigid translation symmetry in the Minkowski space of special relativity lie at the foundations of a gravitational gauge theory. If the translation invariance is made local, a gravitational potential $\vartheta$ arises together with its field strength $T\sim {\rm curl}\,\vartheta$. Thereby the Minkowski space deforms into a Weitzenböck space with nonvanishing torsion $T$ but vanishing curvature. The corresponding theory is reviewed and its equivalence to general relativity pointed out. Since translations form a subgroup of the Poincaré group, the group of motion of special relativity, one ought to straightforwardly extend the gauging of the translations to the gauging of full Poincaré group thereby also including the conservation law of the {\it angular momentum} current. The emerging Poincaré gauge (theory of) gravity, starting from the viable Einstein-Cartan theory of 1961, will be shortly reviewed and its prospects for further developments assessed.

Generalized Birkhoff theorem in the Poincaré gauge gravity theory

The analysis of the validity of Birkhoff's theorem about the uniqueness of the spherically symmetric solution of the gravitational field equations is extended to the framework of the Poincaré gauge gravity theory. The class of models with the most general Lagrangians of the Yang-Mills type constructed from all possible quadratic invariants of the curvature and the torsion is considered, including both parity-even and parity-odd sectors. We find the models in which the weak and strong versions of the generalized Birkhoff theorem are valid, by making use of the double duality technique.

Parity violation in Poincaré gauge gravity

We analyse the parity violation issue in the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity for the two classes of models which are built as natural extensions of the Einstein-Cartan theory. The conservation laws of the matter currents are revisited and we clarify the derivation of the effective Einstein field equation and the structure of the effective energy-momentum current for arbitrary matter sources.

Generalized nonlocal gravity framework based on Poincaré gauge theory

We describe a framework for a generalized nonlocal gravity theory inspired by Poincaré gauge theory. Our theory provides a unified description of previous nonlocal extensions of Einstein's theory of gravitation, in particular it allows for a clear geometrical foundation. Furthermore, it incorporates recent simplifications for the ansatz of the nonlocality, which should allow for a systematic study of the impact of nonlocal concepts on observations.

We study the dynamics of classical and quantum particles with spin and dipole moments in external fields within the framework of the general approach by making use of the projection technique. Applications include the neutrino physics in matter, polarization phenomena in astrophysics, high-energy and heavy-ion physics.

Exact Solutions in Poincaré Gauge Gravity Theory

In the framework of the gauge theory based on the Poincaré symmetry group, the gravitational field is described in terms of the coframe and the local Lorentz connection. Considered as gauge field potentials, they give rise to the corresponding field strength which are naturally identified with the torsion and the curvature on the Riemann--Cartan spacetime. We study the class of quadratic Poincaré gauge gravity models with the most general Yang--Mills type Lagrangian which contains all possible parity-even and parity-odd invariants built from the torsion and the curvature. Exact vacuum solutions of the gravitational field equations are constructed as a certain deformation of de Sitter geometry. They are black holes with nontrivial torsion.

Constitutive law of nonlocal gravity

We analyze the structure of a recent nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation by Mashhoon et al. By means of a covariant technique, we derive an expanded version of the nonlocality tensor which constitutes the theory. At the lowest orders of approximation, this leads to a simplification which sheds light on the fundamental structure of the theory and may prove useful in the search for exact solutions of nonlocal gravity.

Premetric approach in gravity and electrodynamics

The basics of the premetric approach are discussed, including the essential details of the formalism and some of its beautiful consequences. We demonstrate how the classical electrodynamics can be developed without a metric in a quite straightforward way: Maxwell's equations, together with the general response law for material media, admit a consistent premetric formulation. Furthermore, we show that in relativistic theories of gravity, the premetric program leads to a better understanding of the interdependence between topological, affine, and metric concepts.

Measuring the gravitational field in General Relativity: From deviation equations and the gravitational compass to relativistic clock gradiometry

How does one measure the gravitational field? We give explicit answers to this fundamental question and show how all components of the curvature tensor, which represents the gravitational field in Einstein's theory of General Relativity, can be obtained by means of two different methods. The first method relies on the measuring the accelerations of a suitably prepared set of test bodies relative to the observer. The second methods utilizes a set of suitably prepared clocks. The methods discussed here form the basis of relativistic (clock) gradiometry and are of direct operational relevance for applications in geodesy.

Premetric teleparallel theory of gravity and its local and linear constitutive law

We continue to investigate the premetric teleparallel theory of gravity (TG) with the coframe (tetrad) as gravitational potential. We start from the field equations and a local and linear constitutive law. We create a Tonti diagram of TG in order to disclose the structure of TG. Subsequently we irreducibly decompose the 6th order constitutive tensor under the linear group. Moreover, we construct the most general constitutive tensors from the metric and the totally antisymmetric Levi-Civita symbol, and we demonstrate that they encompass nontrivial axion and skewon type pieces. Using these tools, we derive for TG in the geometric-optics approximation propagating massless spin 0, 1, and 2 waves, including the special case of Einstein's general relativity.
