Forces and momenta caused by electromagnetic waves in magnetoelectric media

We analyse the propagation of electromagnetic waves in magnetoelectric media. Recently, Feigel has predicted that such a medium may ``extract momentum from vacuum" in the sense that the total momentum of the virtual waves (vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field) is nontrivial. Our aim is to check the feasibility of this effect. The crucial point in our study is an assumption of the finite size of the magnetoelectric sample, which allows us to reduce the calculation of the momenta and forces of the electromagnetic waves acting on the sample to the vacuum region outside of the medium. In this framework, we demonstrate that, in contrast to Feigel, the total force caused by the virtual is zero, with an appropriate count of the modes that should be taken into account in this effect. Furthermore, we find that the two irreducible parts of the magnetoelectric matrix behave differently in the possible Feigel effect. Going beyond the original scheme of the virtual electromagnetic waves, we propose an experimental scheme which is suitable for the measurement of the magnetoelectric susceptibilities of the medium with the help of real electromagnetic waves.

Exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for gravitational waves and magnetic field background

We consider an exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for the Dirac spinor field on the combined background of a gravitational wave and constant uniform magnetic field. By taking the classical limit of the spinor field Hamiltonian we arrive at the equations of motion for the non-relativistic spinning particle. Two different kinds of the gravitational fields are considered and in both cases the effect of the gravitational wave on the spinor field and on the corresponding spinning particle may be enforced by the sufficiently strong magnetic field. This result can be relevant for the astrophysical applications and, in principle, useful for creating the gravitational wave detectors based on atomic physics and precise interferometry.

Relativistic analysis of magnetoelectric crystals: extracting a new 4-dimensional P odd and T odd pseudoscalar from Cr_2 O_3 data

Earlier, the linear magnetoelectric effect of chromium sesquioxide Cr_2 O_3 has been determined experimentally as a function of temperature. One measures the electric field-induced magnetization on Cr_2 O_3 crystals or the magnetic field-induced polarization. From the magnetoelectric moduli of Cr_2 O_3 we extract a 4-dimensional relativistic invariant pseudoscalar \tildeα. It is temperature dependent and of the order of ~ 10^{-4} Y_0, with Y_0 as vacuum admittance. We show that the new pseudoscalar \tildeαis odd under parity transformation and odd under time inversion. Moreover, \tildeαis for Cr_2 O_3 what Tellegen's gyrator is for two port theory, the axion field for axion electrodynamics, and the PEMC (perfect electromagnetic conductor) for electrical engineering.

Electrodynamics of moving magnetoelectric media: variational approach

Recently, Feigel has predicted a new effect in magnetoelectric media. The theoretical evaluation of this effect requires a careful analysis of a dynamics of the moving magnetoelectric medium and, in particular, the derivation of the energy-momentum of the electromagnetic field in such a medium. Then, one can proceed with the study of the wave propagation in this medium and derive the mechanical quantities such as the energy, the momentum, and their fluxes and the corresponding forces. In this paper, we develop a consistent general-relativistic variational approach to the moving dielectric and magnetic medium with and without magnetoelectric properties. The old experiments in which the light pressure was measured in fluids are reanalysed in our new framework.

Relativistic nature of a magnetoelectric modulus of Cr_2O_3-crystals: a new 4-dimensional pseudoscalar and its measurement

Earlier, the magnetoelectric effect of chromium sesquioxide Cr_2O_3 has been determined experimentally as a function of temperature. One measures the electric field-induced magnetization on Cr_2O_3 crystals or the magnetic field-induced polarization. From the magnetoelectric moduli of Cr_2O_3 we extract a 4-dimensional relativistic invariant pseudoscalar $\widetildeα$. It is temperature dependent and of the order of 10^{-4}/Z_0, with Z_0 as vacuum impedance. We show that the new pseudoscalar is odd under parity transformation and odd under time inversion. Moreover, $\widetildeα$ is for Cr_2O_3 what Tellegen's gyrator is for two port theory, the axion field for axion electrodynamics, and the PEMC (perfect electromagnetic conductor) for electrical engineering.

On the boundary-value problems and the validity of the Post constraint in modern electromagnetism

We recall that the theory of electromagnetism consists of three building blocks: (a) the inhomogeneous Maxwell equations for the electric and magnetic excitations $(D,H)$ (which reflects charge conservation), (b) the homogeneous Maxwell equations for the electric and magnetic field strengths $(E,B)$ (which reflects flux conservation), and (c) the constitutive relation between $(D,H)$ and $(E,B)$. In the recent paper \cite{Lakhtakia1}, Lakhtakia proposed to change the standard boundary conditions in electrodynamics in order to exclude certain constitutive parameters. We show that this is inadmissible both from the macroscopic and the microscopic points of view.

An assessment of Evans' unified field theory II

Evans developed a classical unified field theory of gravitation and electromagnetism on the background of a spacetime obeying a Riemann-Cartan geometry. In an accompanying paper I, we analyzed this theory and summarized it in nine equations. We now propose a variational principle for Evans' theory and show that it yields two field equations. The second field equation is algebraic in the torsion and we can resolve it with respect to the torsion. It turns out that for all physical cases the torsion vanishes and the first field equation, together with Evans' unified field theory, collapses to an ordinary Einstein equation.

Conserved currents in gravitational models with quasi-invariant Lagrangians: Application to teleparallel gravity

Conservation laws in gravitational theories with diffeomorphism and local Lorentz symmetry are studied. Main attention is paid to the construction of conserved currents and charges associated with an arbitrary vector field that generates a diffeomorphism on the spacetime. We further generalize previous results for the case of gravitational models described by quasi-invariant Lagrangians, that is, Lagrangians that change by a total derivative under the action of the local Lorentz group. The general formalism is then applied to the teleparallel models, for which the energy and the angular momentum of a Kerr black hole are calculated. The subsequent analysis of the results obtained demonstrates the importance of the choice of the frame.

Recent developments in premetric classical electrodynamics

Classical electrodynamics can be based on the conservation laws of electric charge and magnetic flux. Both laws are independent of the metric and the linear connection of spacetime. Within the framework of such a premetric electrodynamics -- provided a local and linear constitutive law of the vacuum is added -- the propagation of electromagnetic waves in the geometric-optics limit can be studied. The wave vectors of the wave fronts obey a quartic extended Fresnel equation. If one forbids birefringence in vacuum, the light cone emerges and Maxwell-Lorentz vacuum electrodynamics can be recovered. If minimal coupling of electrodynamics to gravity is assumed, then only the gravitational potential, i.e., the metric of spacetime, emerges in the constitutive law. We discuss recent results within this general framework.

Invariant conserved currents in gravity theories with local Lorentz and diffeomorphism symmetry

We discuss conservation laws for gravity theories invariant under general coordinate and local Lorentz transformations. We demonstrate the possibility to formulate these conservation laws in many covariant and noncovariant(ly looking) ways. An interesting mathematical fact underlies such a diversity: there is a certain ambiguity in a definition of the (Lorentz-) covariant generalization of the usual Lie derivative. Using this freedom, we develop a general approach to construction of invariant conserved currents generated by an arbitrary vector field on the spacetime. This is done in any dimension, for any Lagrangian of the gravitational field and of a (minimally or nonminimally) coupled matter field. A development of the "regularization via relocalization" scheme is used to obtain finite conserved quantities for asymptotically nonflat solutions. We illustrate how our formalism works by some explicit examples.

Covariance properties and regularization of conserved currents in tetrad gravity

We discuss the properties of the gravitational energy-momentum 3-form within the tetrad formulation of general relativity theory. We derive the covariance properties of the quantities describing the energy-momentum content under Lorentz transformations of the tetrad. As an application, we consider the computation of the total energy (mass) of some exact solutions of Einstein's general relativity theory which describe compact sources with asymptotically flat spacetime geometry. As it is known, depending on the choice of tetrad frame, the formal total integral for such configurations may diverge. We propose a natural regularization method which yields finite values for the total energy-momentum of the system and demonstrate how it works on a number of explicit examples.

Poincare gauge gravity: selected topics

In the gauge theory of gravity based on the Poincare group (the semidirect product of the Lorentz group and the spacetime translations) the mass (energy-momentum) and the spin are treated on an equal footing as the sources of the gravitational field. The corresponding spacetime manifold carries the Riemann-Cartan geometric structure with the nontrivial curvature and torsion. We describe some aspects of the classical Poincare gauge theory of gravity. Namely, the Lagrange-Noether formalism is presented in full generality, and the family of quadratic (in the curvature and the torsion) models is analyzed in detail. We discuss the special case of the spinless matter and demonstrate that Einstein's theory arises as a degenerate model in the class of the quadratic Poincare theories. Another central point is the overview of the so-called double duality method for constructing of the exact solutions of the classical field equations.

We describe plane-fronted waves in the Yang-Mills type quadratic metric-affine theory of gravity. The torsion and the nonmetricity are both nontrivial, and they do not belong to the triplet ansatz.

Spacetime metric from local and linear electrodynamics: a new axiomatic scheme

We consider spacetime to be a 4-dimensional differentiable manifold that can be split locally into time and space. No metric, no linear connection are assumed. Matter is described by classical fields/fluids. We distinguish electrically charged from neutral matter. Electric charge and magnetic flux are postulated to be conserved. As a consequence, the inhomogeneous and the homogeneous Maxwell equations emerge expressed in terms of the excitation H and the field strength F, respectively. H and F are assumed to fulfill a local and linear "spacetime relation" with 36 constitutive functions. The propagation of electromagnetic waves is considered under such circumstances in the geometric optics limit. We forbid birefringence in vacuum and find the light cone including its Lorentzian signature. Thus the conformally invariant part of the metric is recovered. If one sets a scale, one finds the pseudo-Riemannian metric of spacetime.

Measuring a piecewise constant axion field in classical electrodynamics

In order to settle the problem of the "Post constraint" in material media, we consider the propagation of a plane electromagnetic wave in a medium with a piecewise constant axion field. Although a constant axion field does not affect the wave propagation in a homogeneous medium, we show that the reflection and transmission of a wave at an interface between the two media is sensitive to the difference of the axion values. This observation can be used to determine experimentally the axion piece in matter despite the fact that a constant axion value does not contribute to the Maxwell equations.

Linear media in classical electrodynamics and the Post constraint

The Maxwell equations are formulated in a generally covariant and metric-free way in 1+3 and subsequently in 4 dimensions. For this purpose, we use the excitations $\cal D$, $\cal H$ and the field strengths $E,B$. A local and linear constitutive law between excitations and field strengths is assumed, with a constitutive tensor $χ^{ijkl}=-χ^{jikl}=-χ^{ijlk}$ of 36 components. The properties of this tensor are discussed. In particular, we address the validity of the Post constraint, a subject that is very much under discussion. In this connection, the Tellegen gyrator, the axion field, and the ``perfect electromagnetic conductor'' of Lindell & Sihvola are compared with each other.

Dimensions and Units in Electrodynamics

We sketch the foundations of classical electrodynamics, in particular the transition that took place when Einstein, in 1915, succeeded to formulate general relativity. In 1916 Einstein demonstrated that, with a choice of suitable variables for the electromagnetic field, it is possible to put Maxwell's equation into a form that is covariant under general coordinate transformations. This unfolded, by basic contributions of Kottler, Cartan, van Dantzig, Schouten & Dorgelo, Toupin & Truesdell, and Post, to what one may call {\em premetric classical electrodynamics.} This framework will be described shortly. An analysis is given of the physical dimensions involved in electrodynamics and subsequently the question of units addressed. It will be pointed out that these results are untouched by the generalization of classical to quantum electrodynamics (QED). We compare critically our results with those of {\sl L.B. Okun} which he had presented at a recent conference.

To consider the electromagnetic field as fundamental, and the metric only as a subsidiary field

In accordance with an old suggestion of Asher Peres (1962), we consider the electromagnetic field as fundamental and the metric as a subsidiary field. In following up this thought, we formulate Maxwell's theory in a diffeomorphism invariant and metric-independent way. The electromagnetic field is then given in terms of the excitation $H=(H,D)$ and the field strength $F=(E,B)$. Additionally, a local and linear ``spacetime relation'' is assumed between $H$ and $F$, namely $H \sim κF$, with the constitutive tensor $κ$. The propagation is studied of electromagnetic wave fronts (surfaces of discontinuity) with a method of Hadamard. We find a generalized Fresnel equation that is quartic in the wave covector of the wave front. We discuss under which conditions the waves propagate along the light cone. Thereby we derive the metric of spacetime, up to a conformal factor, by purely electromagnetic methods.
