Spatial solitons in nonlinear left-handed metamaterials

We predict that nonlinear left-handed metamaterials can support both TE- and TM-polarized self-trapped localized beams, spatial electromagnetic solitons. Such solitons appear as single- and multi-hump beams, being either symmetric or antisymmetric, and they can exist due to the hysteresis-type magnetic nonlinearity and the effective domains of negative magnetic permeability.

Matter-wave gap vortices in optical lattices

We predict the existence of spatially localized nontrivial topological states of the Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive atomic interactions confined by an optical lattice. These nonlinear localized states, matter-wave gap vortices, possess a phase dislocation and exist in the gaps of the matter-wave bandgap spectrum due to the Bragg scattering. We discuss the structure, stability, and formation dynamics of the gap vortices in the case of two-dimensional optical lattices.

Subwavelength imaging with opaque left-handed nonlinear lens

We introduce the concept of subwavelength imaging with an opaque nonlinear left-handed lens by generating the second-harmonic field. We consider a slab of composite left-handed metamaterial with quadratic nonlinear response and show that such a flat lens can form, under certain conditions, an image of the second-harmonic field of the source being opaque at the fundamental frequency.

Controlled generation and steering of spatial gap solitons

We demonstrate the first fully controlled generation of immobile and slow spatial gap solitons in nonlinear periodic systems with band-gap spectra, and reveal the key features of gap solitons which distinguish them from conventional counterparts, including a dynamical transformation of gap solitons due to nonlinear inter-band coupling. We also predict theoretically and confirm experimentally the effect of anomalous steering of gap solitons in optically-induced photonic lattices.

Asymmetric vortex solitons in nonlinear periodic lattices

We reveal the existence of asymmetric vortex solitons in ideally symmetric periodic lattices, and show how such nonlinear localized structures describing elementary circular flows can be analyzed systematically using the energy-balance relations. We present the examples of rhomboid, rectangular, and triangular vortex solitons on a square lattice, and also describe novel coherent states where the populations of clockwise and anti-clockwise vortex modes change periodically due to a nonlinearity-induced momentum exchange through the lattice. Asymmetric vortex solitons are expected to exist in different nonlinear lattice systems including optically-induced photonic lattices, nonlinear photonic crystals, and Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices.

Observation of discrete vortex solitons in optically-induced photonic lattices

We report on the frst experimental observation of discrete vortex solitons in two-dimensional optically-induced photonic lattices. We demonstrate strong stabilization of an optical vortex by the lattice in a self-focusing nonlinear medium and study the generation of the discrete vortices from a broad class of singular beams.

Soliton stripes in two-dimensional nonlinear photonic lattices

We study experimentally the interaction of a soliton with a nonlinear lattice. We observe the formation of a novel type of composite soliton created by strong coupling of mutually incoherent periodic and localized beam components. By imposing an initial transverse momentum on the soliton stripe, we observe the effect of lattice compression and deformation.

Transmission properties of left-handed band-gap structures

We analyze transmission of electromagnetic waves through a periodic band-gap structure consisting of slabs of a left-handed metamaterial and air. Using the effective parameters of the metamaterial derived from its microscopic structure, we study, with the help of the transfer-matrix approach and by means of the finite-difference-time-domain numerical simulations, the transmission properties of such a left-handed photonic crystals in a novel type of band gap associated with the zero averaged refractive index. We demonstrate that the transmission can be made tunable by introducing defects, which allow to access selectively two different types of band gaps.

Waveguiding properties of optical vortex solitons

We study the properties of linear and nonlinear waveguides induced by optical vortex solitons in both self-defocusing and self-focusing nonlinear media, for the case of a saturable nonlinear response. We demonstrate that the vortex-induced waveguides can guide both fundamental and first-order guided modes which together with the vortex may form, for larger amplitudes of the guide modes, different types of composite vortex-mode vector solitons. In the case of the self-focusing saturable medium, we demonstrate that a large-amplitude guided mode can stabilize the ring-like vortex structure which usually decays due to azimuthal modulational instability.

Bandgap engineering and defect modes in photonic crystals with rotated hexagonal holes

We study the bandgap structure of two-dimensional photonic crystals created by a triangular lattice of rotated hexagonal holes, and explore the effects of the reduced symmetry in the unit-cell geometry on the value of the absolute bandgap and the frequencies of localized defect modes. We reveal that a maximum absolute bandgap for this structure is achieved for an intermediate rotation angle of the holes. This angle depends on the radius of the holes and the refractive index of the background material. We also study the properties of the defect modes created by missing holes, and discuss the mode tunability in such structures.

Dark Matter-Wave Solitons in Optical Lattices

We analyze the Floquet-Bloch matter-wave spectrum of Bose-Einstein condensates loaded into single-periodic optical lattices and double-periodic superlattices. In the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we describe the structure and analyze the mobility properties of dark matter-wave solitons residing on the background of extended nonlinear Bloch-type states. We demonstrate that interaction between dark solitons can be effectively controlled in optical superlattices.

Nonlinear surface waves in left-handed materials

We study both linear and nonlinear surface waves localized at the interface separating a left-handed medium (i.e. the medium with both negative dielectric permittivity and negative magnetic permeability) and a conventional (or right-handed) dielectric medium. We demonstrate that the interface can support both TE- and TM-polarized surface waves - surface polaritons, and we study their properties. We describe the intensity-dependent properties of nonlinear surface waves in three different cases, i.e. when both the LH and RH media are nonlinear and when either of the media is nonlinear. In the case when both media are nonlinear, we find two types of nonlinear surface waves, one with the maximum amplitude at the interface, and the other one with two humps. In the case when one medium is nonlinear, only one type of surface wave exists, which has the maximum electric field at the interface, unlike waves in right-handed materials where the surface-wave maximum is usually shifted into a self-focussing nonlinear medium. We discus the possibility of tuning the wave group velocity in both the linear and nonlinear cases, and show that group-velocity dispersion, which leads to pulse broadening, can be balanced by the nonlinearity of the media, so resulting in soliton propagation.

Nonlinear Bloch-wave interaction and Bragg scattering in optically-induced lattices

We study, both theoretically and experimentally, the Bragg scattering of light in optically-induced photonic lattices and reveal the key physical mechanisms which govern nonlinear self-action of narrow beams under the combined effects of Bragg scattering and wave diffraction, allowing for selecting bands with different effective dispersion.

Localization of Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

We reveal underlying principles of nonlinear localization of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice. Our theory shows that spin-dependent optical lattices can be used to manipulate both the type and magnitude of nonlinear interaction between the ultracold atomic species and to observe nontrivial two-componentnlocalized states of a condensate in both bands and gaps of the matter-wave band-gap structure.

Observation of transverse instabilities in optically-induced lattices

We study experimentally the Bloch-wave instabilities in optically-induced lattices. We reveal two different instability scenarios associated with either the transverse modulational instability of a single Bloch wave, or the nonlinear inter-band coupling between different Bloch waves. These effects are compared with the transverse instability in homogeneous media, and it is shown that the periodic modulation of the refractive index greatly enhances the transverse instability.

Scattering of dipole-mode vector solitons: Theory and experiment

We study, both theoretically and experimentally, the scattering properties of optical dipole-mode vector solitons - radially asymmetric composite self-trapped optical beams. First, we analyze the soliton collisions in an isotropic two-component model with a saturable nonlinearity and demonstrate that in many cases the scattering dynamics of the dipole-mode solitons allows us to classify them as ``molecules of light'' - extremely robust spatially localized objects which survive a wide range of interactions and display many properties of composite states with a rotational degree of freedom. Next, we study the composite solitons in an anisotropic nonlinear model that describes photorefractive nonlinearities, and also present a number of experimental verifications of our analysis.

Giant Goos-Hanchen effect at the reflection from left-handed metamaterials

We study the beam reflection from a layered structure with a left-handed metamaterial. We predict a giant lateral (Goos-Hanchen) shift and splitting of the beam due to the resonant excitation of surface polaritons with a vortex-like energy flow between the right- and left-handed materials.
