Nonlinearity-induced conformational instability and dynamics of biopolymers

We propose a simple phenomenological model for describing the conformational dynamics of biopolymers via the nonlinearity-induced buckling and collapse (i.e. coiling up) instabilities. Taking into account the coupling between the internal and mechanical degrees of freedom of a semiflexible biopolymer chain, we show that self-trapped internal excitations (such as amide-I vibrations in proteins, base-pair vibrations in DNA, or polarons in proteins) may produce the buckling and collapse instabilities of an initially straight chain. These instabilities remain latent in a straight infinitely long chain, because the bending of such a chain would require an infinite energy. However, they manifest themselves as soon as we consider more realistic cases and take into account a finite length of the chain. In this case the nonlinear localized modes may act as drivers giving impetus to the conformational dynamics of biopolymers. The buckling instability is responsible, in particular, for the large-amplitude localized bending waves which accompany the nonlinear modes propagating along the chain. In the case of the collapse instability, the chain folds into a compact three-dimensional coil. The viscous damping of the aqueous environment only slows down the folding of the chain, but does not stop it even for a large damping. We find that these effects are only weakly affected by the peculiarities of the interaction potentials, and thus they should be generic for different models of semiflexible chains carrying nonlinear localized excitations.

Self-written waveguides in photopolymerizable resins

We study the optically-induced growth and interaction of self-written waveguides in a photopolymerizable resin. We investigate experimentally how the interaction depends on the mutual coherence and relative power of the input beams, and suggest an improved analytical model that describes the growth of single self-written waveguides and the main features of their interaction in photosensitive materials.

Spatial optical solitons in nonlinear photonic crystals

We study spatial optical solitons in a one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal created by an array of thin-film nonlinear waveguides, the so-called Dirac-comb nonlinear lattice. We analyze modulational instability of the extended Bloch-wave modes and also investigate the existence and stability of bright, dark, and ``twisted'' spatially localized modes in such periodic structures. Additionally, we discuss both similarities and differences of our general results with the simplified models of nonlinear periodic media described by the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation, derived in the tight-binding approximation, and the coupled-mode theory, valid for shallow periodic modulations of the optical refractive index.

Nonlinear Aharonov-Bohm scattering by optical vortices

We study linear and nonlinear wave scattering by an optical vortex in a self-defocusing nonlinear Kerr medium. In the linear case, we find a splitting of a plane-wave front at the vortex proportional to its circulation, similar to what occurs in the scattered wave of electrons for the Aharonov-Bohm effect. For larger wave amplitudes, we study analytically and numerically the scattering of a dark-soliton stripe (a nonlinear analog of a small-amplitude wavepacket) by a vortex and observe a significant asymmetry of the scattered wave. Subsequently, a wavefront splitting of the scattered wave develops into transverse modulational instability, ``unzipping'' the stripe into trains of vortices with opposite charges.

Nonlinear guided waves and spatial solitons in a periodic layered medium

We overview the properties of nonlinear guided waves and (bright and dark) spatial optical solitons in a periodic medium created by a sequence of linear and nonlinear layers. First, we consider a single layer with a cubic nonlinear response (a nonlinear waveguide) embedded into a periodic layered linear medium, and describe nonlinear localized modes (guided waves and Bragg-like localized gap modes) and their stability. Then, we study modulational instability as well as the existence and stability of discrete spatial solitons in a periodic array of identical nonlinear layers, a one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal. Both similarities and differences with the models described by the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation (derived in the tight-binding approximation) and coupled-mode theory (valid for the shallow periodic modulations) are emphasized.

Self-trapping of light and nonlinear localized modes in 2D photonic crystals and waveguides

We overview our recent results on the nonlinear localized modes in two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals and photonic-crystal waveguides. Employing the technique based on the Green function, we describe the existence domains for nonlinear guided modes in photonic crystal waveguides and study their unique properties including bistability. We also show that low-amplitude nonlinear modes near the band edge of a reduced-symmetry 2D square-lattice photonic crystals, which are usually unstable, can be stabilized due to effective long-range linear and nonlinear interactions.

Self-trapping and stable localized modes in nonlinear photonic crystals

We predict the existence of stable nonlinear localized modes near the band edge of a two-dimensional reduced-symmetry photonic crystal with a Kerr nonlinearity. Employing the technique based on the Green function, we reveal a physical mechanism of the mode stabilization associated with the effective nonlinear dispersion and long-range interaction in the photonic crystals.

Nonlinear Impurity Modes in Homogeneous and Periodic Media

We analyze the existence and stability of nonlinear localized waves described by the Kronig-Penney model with a nonlinear impurity. We study the properties of such waves in a homogeneous medium, and then analyze new effects introduced by periodicity of the medium parameters. In particular, we demonstrate the existence of a novel type of stable nonlinear band-gap localized states, and also reveal an important physical mechanism of the oscillatory wave instabilities associated with the band-gap wave resonances.

Existence and stability of atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze the model of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) parametrically coupled to a molecular BEC via a photoassociation process. We show that an interplay of nonlinear inter- and intra-species interactions leads to the formation of mutually trapped states of a hybrid condensate, which are spatially localized even without a trap. The untrapped atomic-molecular condensates with a large number of atoms in either fraction are shown to be dynamically stable in the framework of a mean field theory.

Multi-soliton energy transport in anharmonic lattices

We demonstrate the existence of dynamically stable multihump solitary waves in polaron-type models describing interaction of envelope and lattice excitations. In comparison with the earlier theory of multihump optical solitons [see Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83}, 296 (1999)], our analysis reveals a novel physical mechanism for the formation of stable multihump solitary waves in nonintegrable multi-component nonlinear models.

Nonlinearity and disorder: Classification and stability of nonlinear impurity modes

We study the effects produced by competition of two physical mechanisms of energy localization in inhomogeneous nonlinear systems. As an example, we analyze spatially localized modes supported by a nonlinear impurity in the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and describe three types of nonlinear impurity modes --- one- and two-hump symmetric localized modes and asymmetric localized modes --- for both focusing and defocusing nonlinearity and two different (attractive or repulsive) types of impurity. We obtain an analytical stability criterion for the nonlinear localized modes and consider the case of a power-law nonlinearity in detail. We discuss several scenarios of the instability-induced dynamics of the nonlinear impurity modes, including the mode decay or switching to a new stable state, and collapse at the impurity site.

We study bit-parallel-wavelength (BPW) pulse transmission in multi-channel single-mode optical fiber links for high-performance computer networks. We develop a theory of the pulse shepherding effect earlier discovered in numerical simulations, and also describe the families of the BPW solitons and bifurcation cascades in a system of N coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

Observation of dipole-mode vector solitons

We report on the first experimental observation of a novel type of optical vector soliton, a {\em dipole-mode soliton}, recently predicted theoretically. We show that these vector solitons can be generated in a photorefractive medium employing two different processes: a phase imprinting, and a symmetry-breaking instability of a vortex-mode vector soliton. The experimental results display remarkable agreement with the theory, and confirm the robust nature of these radially asymmetric two-component solitary waves.

Stability of Spatial Optical Solitons

We present a brief overview of the basic concepts of the soliton stability theory and discuss some characteristic examples of the instability-induced soliton dynamics, in application to spatial optical solitons described by the NLS-type nonlinear models and their generalizations. In particular, we demonstrate that the soliton internal modes are responsible for the appearance of the soliton instability, and outline an analytical approach based on a multi-scale asymptotic technique that allows to analyze the soliton dynamics near the marginal stability point. We also discuss some results of the rigorous linear stability analysis of fundamental solitary waves and nonlinear impurity modes. Finally, we demonstrate that multi-hump vector solitary waves may become stable in some nonlinear models, and discuss the examples of stable (1+1)-dimensional composite solitons and (2+1)-dimensional dipole-mode solitons in a model of two incoherently interacting optical beams.

Stability criterion for multi-component solitary waves

We obtain the most general matrix criterion for stability and instability of multi-component solitary waves considering a system of $N$ incoherently coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations. Soliton stability is studied as a constrained variational problem which is reduced to finite-dimensional linear algebra. We prove that unstable (all real and positive) eigenvalues of the linear stability problem for multi-component solitary waves are connected with negative eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix, the latter is constructed for the energetic surface of N-component spatially localized stationary solutions.

Multistep cascading and fourth-harmonic generation

We apply the concept of multistep cascading to the problem of fourth-harmonic generation in a single quadratic crystal. We analyze a new model of parametric wave mixing and describe its stationary solutions for two- and three-color plane waves and spatial solitons. Some applications to the optical frequency division as well as the realization of the double-phase-matching processes in engineered QPM structures with phase reversal sequences are also discussed.

Parametric localized modes in quadratic nonlinear photonic structures

We analyze two-color spatially localized modes formed by parametrically coupled fundamental and second-harmonic fields excited at quadratic (or chi-2) nonlinear interfaces embedded into a linear layered structure --- a quasi-one-dimensional quadratic nonlinear photonic crystal. For a periodic lattice of nonlinear interfaces, we derive an effective discrete model for the amplitudes of the fundamental and second-harmonic waves at the interfaces (the so-called discrete chi-2 equations), and find, numerically and analytically, the spatially localized solutions --- discrete gap solitons. For a single nonlinear interface in a linear superlattice, we study the properties of two-color localized modes, and describe both similarities and differences with quadratic solitons in homogeneous media.
