Conjugator length of locally compact groups of Euclidean isometries

We consider locally compact subgroups $H$ of the full isometry group $\Isom(\E^n)$ of Euclidean $n$-space which respect the splitting into an orthogonal and a translation subgroup. We prove that the conjugator length function of such groups either has zero growth, grows linearly, or is unbounded --- depending on the topology of the spherical part of $H$. Our theorem shows, in particular, that affine Coxeter groups and split crystallographic groups have linear growth for their conjugator length functions.

Generalisable presentations and compactness properties of locally compact right-angled Artin groups

We propose the systematic study of presentations that can be generalised over a continuous open group monomorphism. Presentations with this property can turn well-known presentations such as those for as orientable surface groups, Artin groups, and some Thompson groups, into topological groups with a prescribed open subgroup. Later we focus on right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs) and introduce a notion of topological RAAGs. Our approach differs from lattice envelopes and produces examples of locally compact (LC) groups that contain RAAGs as discrete subgroups, but generally not as lattices. We investigate some geometric aspects of topological RAAGs, with a special emphasis on compactness properties of LC ones. This includes a study of universal Salvetti-type complexes which may be of independent interest. These complexes share some properties with buildings. Although in some cases they are CAT(0) cube complexes and provide models for classifying spaces, in other cases they are not even uniquely geodesic. For a large class of examples we establish high connectivity properties for these complexes. This yields novel examples of LC groups with prescribed compactness properties or rational cohomological dimension. We note that the Bestvina-Brady machinery does not automatically generalise to this setting; nevertheless, we extend the Bieri-Stallings construction to obtain totally disconnected locally compact (TDLC) groups of type $FP_n$ but not $FP_{n+1}$. Along the way we record counterparts of cohomological results, such as a Mayer-Vietoris sequence and Künneth formula in discrete (co)homology for TDLC groups, which have not appeared elsewhere in the literature. Despite our non-discrete LC focus we obtain, as by-product, new examples of discrete groups with controlled finiteness properties including, for every $n \geq 1$, a Thompson-like Bieri-Stallings group of type $F_n$ but not $F_{n+1}$.

Cohomological and quasi-isometric diversity of groups with property $R_\infty$

How rich is the collection of groups with a given prominent property? In this work we approach this question for property~$R_\infty$, which says that every automorphism $φ$ of a given group has infinitely many orbits under the $φ$-twisted conjugation action $(g,x) \mapsto gxφ(g)^{-1}$. Generalising the soluble groups of Herbert Abels to a large family over many integral domains, we prove that most such groups have property~$R_\infty$ drawing from a classical result of Levchuk and a swift observation by Jabara. Within the broad programme of cataloguing finitely generated groups up to quasi-isometry, our groups can then be separated by finiteness properties and cohomological dimension whilst having~$R_\infty$. Abandoning finite presentability, we establish that property~$R_\infty$ is very abundant in a strong sense: there are uncountably many finitely generated groups (which can all be chosen to be amenable or non-amenable) that have~$R_\infty$ and are pairwise not quasi-isometric. The proofs vary in flavour. On the amenable side we use carefully constructed quotients of Abels' groups and a general strategy for quasi-isometric diversity established by Minasyan, Osin, and Witzel. For the non-amenable constructions we rely on modifications of Leary's type $\mathtt{FP}$ groups, further cohomological arguments, and recent powerful criteria for~$R_\infty$ due to Iveson, Martino, Sgobbi, Wong, and Fournier-Facio.

Reidemeister numbers for arithmetic Borel subgroups in type A

The Reidemeister number $R(φ)$ of a group automorphism $φ\in \mathrm{Aut}(G)$ encodes the number of orbits of the $φ$-twisted conjugation action of $G$ on itself, and the Reidemeister spectrum of $G$ is defined as the set of Reidemeister numbers of all of its automorphisms. We obtain a sufficient criterion for some groups of triangular matrices over integral domains to have property $R_\infty$, which means that their Reidemeister spectrum equals $\{\infty\}$. Using this criterion, we show that Reidemeister numbers for certain soluble $S$-arithmetic groups behave differently from their linear algebraic counterparts -- contrasting with results of Steinberg, Bhunia, and Bose.

Twisted conjugacy in soluble arithmetic groups

Reidemeister numbers of group automorphisms encode the number of twisted conjugacy classes of groups and might yield information about self-maps of spaces related to the given objects. Here we address a question posed by Gonçalves and Wong in the mid 2000s: we construct an infinite series of compact connected solvmanifolds (that are not nilmanifolds) of strictly increasing dimensions and all of whose self-homotopy equivalences have vanishing Nielsen number. To this end, we establish a sufficient condition for a prominent (infinite) family of soluble linear groups to have the so-called property $R_\infty$. In particular, we generalize or complement earlier results due to Dekimpe, Gonçalves, Kochloukova, Nasybullov, Taback, Tertooy, Van den Bussche, and Wong, showing that many soluble $S$-arithmetic groups have $R_\infty$ and suggesting a conjecture in this direction.

On the top-dimensional cohomology of arithmetic Chevalley groups

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathfrak{O}$ and let $\mathcal{G}$ be a Chevalley group scheme not of type $\mathtt{E}_8$, $\mathtt{F}_4$ or $\mathtt{G}_2$. We use the theory of Tits buildings and a result of Tóth on Steinberg modules to prove that $H^{\operatorname{vcd}}(\mathcal{G}(\mathfrak{O}); \mathbb{Q}) = 0$ if $\mathfrak{O}$ is Euclidean.

Involutions in Coxeter groups

We combinatorially characterize the number $\mathrm{cc}_2$ of conjugacy classes of involutions in any Coxeter group in terms of higher rank odd graphs. This notion naturally generalizes the concept of odd graphs, used previously to count the number of conjugacy classes of reflections. We provide uniform bounds and discuss some extremal cases, where the number $\mathrm{cc}_2$ is smallest or largest possible. Moreover, we provide formulae for $\mathrm{cc}_2$ in free and direct products as well as for some finite and affine types, besides computing $\mathrm{cc}_2$ for all triangle groups, and all affine irreducible Coxeter groups of rank up to eleven.

The Sigma invariants for the Golden Mean Thompson group

We use a method of Bieri, Geoghegan and Kochloukova to calculate the BNSR-invariants for the irrational slope Thompson's group $F_τ$. To do so we establish conditions under which the Sigma invariants coincide with those of a subgroup of finite index, addressing a problem posed by Strebel.

The galaxy of Coxeter groups

In this paper we introduce the galaxy of Coxeter groups -- an infinite dimensional, locally finite, ranked simplicial complex which captures isomorphisms between Coxeter systems. In doing so, we would like to suggest a new framework to study the isomorphism problem for Coxeter groups. We prove some structural results about this space, provide a full characterization in small ranks and propose many questions. In addition we survey known tools, results and conjectures. Along the way we show profinite rigidity of triangle Coxeter groups -- a result which is possibly of independent interest.

Thompson-like groups, Reidemeister numbers, and fixed points

We investigate fixed-point properties of automorphisms of groups similar to R. Thompson's group $F$. Revisiting work of Gonçalves-Kochloukova, we deduce a cohomological criterion to detect infinite fixed-point sets in the abelianization, implying the so-called property $R_\infty$. Using the BNS $Σ$-invariant and drawing from works of Gonçalves-Sankaran-Strebel and Zaremsky, we show that our tool applies to many $F$-like groups, including Stein's $F_{2,3}$, Cleary's $F_τ$, the Lodha-Moore groups, and the braided version of $F$.

Canonical decompositions and algorithmic recognition of spatial graphs

We prove that there exists an algorithm for determining whether two piecewise-linear spatial graphs are isomorphic. In its most general form, our theorem applies to spatial graphs furnished with vertex colorings, edge colorings and/or edge orientations. We first show that spatial graphs admit canonical decompositions into blocks, that is, spatial graphs that are non-separable and have no cut vertices, in a suitable topological sense. Then we apply a result of Haken and Matveev in order to algorithmically distinguish these blocks.

On the finiteness length of some soluble linear groups

Given a commutative unital ring $R$, we show that the finiteness length of a group $G$ is bounded above by the finiteness length of the Borel subgroup of rank one $\mathbf{B}_2^\circ(R)=\left( \begin{smallmatrix} * & * \\ 0 & * \end{smallmatrix} \right)\leq\mathrm{SL}_2(R)$ whenever $G$ admits certain $R$-representations with metabelian image. Combined with results due to Bestvina--Eskin--Wortman and Gandini, this gives a new proof of (a generalization of) Bux's equality on the finiteness length of $S$-arithmetic Borel groups. We also give an alternative proof of an unpublished theorem due to Strebel, characterizing finite presentability of Abels' groups $\mathbf{A}_n(R) \leq \mathrm{GL}_n(R)$ in terms of $n$ and $\mathbf{B}_2^\circ(R)$. This generalizes earlier results due to Remeslennikov, Holz, Lyul'ko, Cornulier--Tessera, and points out to a conjecture about the finiteness length of such groups.

Presentations of parabolics in some elementary Chevalley-Demazure groups

Given a universal elementary Chevalley-Demazure group $E_Φ^{sc}(R)$ for which its (standard) parabolic subgroups are finitely generated, we consider the problem of classifying which parabolics $P(R) \subset E_Φ^{sc}(R)$ are finitely presented. We show that, under mild assumptions, this is equivalent to the finite presentability of a suitable retract of $P$ which contains the Levi factor. If the base ring $R$ is a Dedekind domain of arithmetic type, we combine our results with well-known theorems due to Borel-Serre, Abels, Behr and Bux to give a partial classification of finitely presentable $S$-arithmetic subgroups of parabolics in split reductive linear algebraic groups.
