Stability and existence of relativistic plasma--vacuum interfaces

We consider the free boundary problem for relativistic plasma--vacuum interfaces in two and three spatial dimensions. The plasma flow is governed by the equations of ideal relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, while the vacuum magnetic and electric fields satisfy Maxwell's equations. The plasma and vacuum magnetic fields are tangential to the interface, which moves with the plasma flow. This yields a nonlinear, multidimensional hyperbolic problem with a free boundary that is characteristic of variable multiplicity. We identify a quantitative stability condition and establish the linear stability of three-dimensional relativistic plasma--vacuum interfaces in the sense that the variable-coefficient linearized problem satisfies energy estimates in anisotropic Sobolev spaces. In estimating tangential derivatives, we exploit an intrinsic cancellation effect to convert the boundary term into an instant integral. We then separate the estimate involving spatial derivatives from that involving time derivatives, so that the instant integral can be mainly absorbed by the instant energy under the stability condition. Moreover, we prove the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of solutions to the nonlinear problem in two-dimensional space, provided that the plasma and vacuum magnetic fields do not vanish simultaneously at any point of the initial interface. The proof combines the solvability and tame estimate of the linearized problem with a suitable modified Nash--Moser iteration. In particular, to establish its solvability, the two-dimensional linearized problem is reduced to a transport equation for the interface function and a hyperbolic boundary problem with maximally nonnegative boundary conditions.

Three-dimensional structural stability of shock waves in elastodynamics

We study the three-dimensional structural stability of shock waves for the equations of elastodynamics governing isentropic flows of compressible inviscid elastic materials. By nonlinear structural stability of a shock wave we mean the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of the discontinuous shock front solution to the hyperbolic system of elastodynamics. By using equivalent formulations of the uniform and weak Kreiss-Lopatinski conditions for 1-shocks, we show that planar shock waves in three-dimensional elastodynamics are always at least weakly stable, and we find a condition necessary and sufficient for their uniform stability. Since the system of elastodynamics satisfies the Agranovich-Majda-Osher block structure condition, uniform stability implies structural stability of corresponding nonplanar shock waves. We also show that, as in isentropic gas dynamics, all compressive shock waves are uniformly stable for convex equations of state. This paper is a natural continuation of the previous two-dimensional analysis in [Morando A., Trakhinin Y., Trebeschi P., Math. Ann. 378 (2020), 1471-1504; Trakhinin Y., J. Hyperbolic Differ. Equ. 19 (2022), 157-173]. As in the two-dimensional case, we make the conclusion that the elastic force plays stabilizing role for uniform stability.

Stabilizing effect of surface tension for the linearized MHD-Maxwell free interface problem

We consider an interface with surface tension that separates a perfectly conducting inviscid fluid from a vacuum. The fluid flow is governed by the equations of ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), while the electric and magnetic fields in vacuum satisfy the Maxwell equations. With boundary conditions on the interface this forms a nonlinear hyperbolic problem with a characteristic free boundary. For the corresponding linearized problem we derive an energy a priori estimate in a conormal Sobolev space without assuming any stability conditions on the unperturbed flow. This verifies the stabilizing effect of surface tension because, as was shown in [Mandrik and Trakhinin, in Commun. Math. Sci. 12 (2014), 1065-1100], a sufficiently large vacuum electric field can make the linearized problem ill-posed for the case of zero surface tension. The main ingredients in proving the energy estimate are a suitable secondary symmetrization of the Maxwell equations in vacuum and making full use of the boundary regularity enhanced from the surface tension.

Well-posedness for moving interfaces in anisotropic plasmas

We study the local-in-time well-posedness for an interface that separates an anisotropic plasma from a vacuum. The plasma flow is governed by the ideal Chew-Goldberger-Low (CGL) equations, which are the simplest collisionless fluid model with anisotropic pressure. The vacuum magnetic and electric fields are supposed to satisfy the pre-Maxwell equations. The plasma and vacuum magnetic fields are tangential to the interface. This represents a nonlinear hyperbolic-elliptic coupled problem with a characteristic free boundary. By a suitable symmetrization of the linearized CGL equations we reduce the linearized free boundary problem to a problem analogous to that in isotropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). This enables us to prove the local existence and uniqueness of solutions to the nonlinear free boundary problem under the same non-collinearity condition for the plasma and vacuum magnetic fields on the initial interface required by Secchi and Trakhinin (Nonlinearity 27:105-169, 2014) in isotropic MHD.

Well-posedness for Moving Interfaces with Surface Tension in Ideal Compressible MHD

We study the local well-posedness for an interface with surface tension that separates a perfectly conducting inviscid fluid from a vacuum. The fluid flow is governed by the equations of three-dimensional ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), while the vacuum magnetic and electric fields are supposed to satisfy the pre-Maxwell equations. The fluid and vacuum magnetic fields are tangential to the interface. This renders a nonlinear hyperbolic-elliptic coupled problem with a characteristic free boundary. We introduce some suitable regularization to establish the solvability and tame estimates for the linearized problem. Combining the linear well-posedness result with a modified Nash--Moser iteration scheme, we prove the local existence and uniqueness of solutions of the nonlinear problem. The non-collinearity condition required by Secchi and Trakhinin [Nonlinearity 27(1): 105--169, 2014] for the case of zero surface tension becomes unnecessary in our result, which verifies the stabilizing effect of surface tension on the evolution of moving vacuum interfaces in ideal compressible MHD.

Nonlinear Stability of MHD Contact Discontinuities with Surface Tension

We consider the motion of two inviscid, compressible, and electrically conducting fluids separated by an interface across which there is no fluid flow in the presence of surface tension. The magnetic field is supposed to be nowhere tangential to the interface. This leads to the characteristic free boundary problem for contact discontinuities with surface tension in three-dimensional ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We prove the nonlinear structural stability of MHD contact discontinuities with surface tension in Sobolev spaces by a modified Nash--Moser iteration scheme. The main ingredient of our proof is deriving the resolution and tame estimate of the linearized problem in usual Sobolev spaces of sufficiently large regularity. In particular, for solving the linearized problem, we introduce a suitable regularization that preserves the transport-type structure for the linearized entropy and divergence of the magnetic field.

Well-Posedness for the Free-Boundary Ideal Compressible Magnetohydrodynamic Equations with Surface Tension

We establish the local existence and uniqueness of solutions to the free-boundary ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with surface tension in three spatial dimensions by a suitable modification of the Nash--Moser iteration scheme. The main ingredients in proving the convergence of the scheme are the tame estimates and unique solvability of the linearized problem in the anisotropic Sobolev spaces $H_*^m$ for $m$ large enough. In order to derive the tame estimates, we make full use of the boundary regularity enhanced from the surface tension. The unique solution of the linearized problem is constructed by designing some suitable $\varepsilon$--regularization and passing to the limit $\varepsilon\to 0$.

On weak stability of shock waves in 2D compressible elastodynamics

By using an equivalent form of the uniform Lopatinski condition for 1-shocks, we prove that the stability condition found by the energy method in [A. Morando, Y. Trakhinin, P. Trebeschi, Structural stability of shock waves in 2D compressible elastodynamics, Math. Ann. 378 (2020) 1471-1504] for the rectilinear shock waves in two-dimensional flows of compressible isentropic inviscid elastic materials is not only sufficient but also necessary for uniform stability (implying structural nonlinear stability of corresponding curved shock waves). The key point of our spectral analysis is a delicate study of the transition between uniform and weak stability. Moreover, we prove that the rectilinear shock waves are never violently unstable, i.e., they are always either uniformly or weakly stable.

Well-Posedness of Free Boundary Problem in Non-relativistic and Relativistic Ideal Compressible Magnetohydrodynamics

We consider the free boundary problem for non-relativistic and relativistic ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics in two and three spatial dimensions with the total pressure vanishing on the plasma--vacuum interface. We establish the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of solutions to this nonlinear characteristic hyperbolic problem under the Rayleigh--Taylor sign condition on the total pressure. The proof is based on certain tame estimates in anisotropic Sobolev spaces for the linearized problem and a modification of the Nash--Moser iteration scheme. Our result is uniform in the light speed and appears to be the first well-posedness result for the free boundary problem in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics with zero total pressure on the moving boundary.

Local Existence of Contact Discontinuities in Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamics

We study the free boundary problem for a contact discontinuity for the system of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. A surface of contact discontinuity is a characteristic of this system with no flow across the discontinuity for which the pressure, the velocity and the magnetic field are continuous whereas the density, the entropy and the temperature may have a jump. For the two-dimensional case, we prove the local-in-time existence in Sobolev spaces of a unique solution of the free boundary problem provided that the Rayleigh--Taylor sign condition on the jump of the normal derivative of the pressure is satisfied at each point of the initial discontinuity.

On violent instability of a plasma-vacuum interface for an incompressible plasma flow and a nonzero displacement current in vacuum

In the classical statement of the plasma-vacuum interface problem in ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) one neglects the displacement current in the vacuum region that gives the div-curl system of pre-Maxwell dynamics for the vacuum magnetic field. For understanding the influence of the vacuum electric field on the evolution of a plasma-vacuum interface we do not neglect the displacement current and consider the full Maxwell equations in vacuum. For the case of an incompressible plasma flow, by constructing an Hadamard-type ill-posedness example for the constant coefficients linearized problem we find a necessary and sufficient condition for the violent instability of a planar plasma-vacuum interface. In particular, we prove that as soon as the unperturbed plasma and vacuum magnetic fields are collinear, any nonzero unperturbed vacuum electric field makes the planar interface violently unstable. This shows the necessity of the corresponding non-collinearity condition for well-posedness and a crucial role of the vacuum electric field in the evolution of a plasma-vacuum interface.

Structural stability of shock waves and current-vortex sheets in shallow water magnetohydrodynamics

We study the structural stability of shock waves and current-vortex sheets in shallow water magnetohydrodynamics (SMHD) in the sense of the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of discontinuous solutions satisfying corresponding jump conditions. The equations of SMHD form a symmetric hyperbolic system which is formally analogous to the system of 2D compressible elastodynamics for particular nonphysical deformations. Using this analogy and the recent results in [Morando A., Trakhinin Y., Trebeschi P. Math. Ann. (2019), https://doi.org/10.1007/s00208-019-01920-6] for shock waves in 2D compressible elastodynamics, we prove that shock waves in SMHD are structurally stable if and only if the fluid height increases across the shock front. For current-vortex sheets the fluid height is continuous whereas the tangential components of the velocity and the magnetic field may have a jump. Applying a so-called secondary symmetrization of the symmetric system of SMHD equations, we find a condition sufficient for the structural stability of current-vortex sheets.

Stability of an incompressible plasma-vacuum interface with displacement current in vacuum

We study the free boundary problem for a plasma-vacuum interface in ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. Unlike the classical statement when the vacuum magnetic field obeys the div-curl system of pre-Maxwell dynamics, to better understand the influence of the electric field in vacuum we do not neglect the displacement current in the vacuum region and consider the Maxwell equations for electric and magnetic fields. Under the necessary and sufficient stability condition for a planar interface found in [Trakhinin Y. arXiv:1812.08675], we prove an energy a priori estimate for the linearized constant coefficient problem. The process of derivation of this estimate is based on various methods, including a secondary symmetrization of the vacuum Maxwell equations, the derivation of a hyperbolic evolutionary equation for the interface function and the construction of a degenerate Kreiss-type symmetrizer for an elliptic-hyperbolic problem for the total pressure.

Structural stability of shock waves in 2D compressible elastodynamics

We study the two-dimensional structural stability of shock waves in a compressible isentropic inviscid elastic fluid in the sense of the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of discontinuous shock front solutions of the equations of compressible elastodynamics in two space dimensions. By the energy method based on a symmetrization of the wave equation and giving an a priori estimate without loss of derivatives for solutions of the constant coefficients linearized problem we find a condition sufficient for the uniform stability of rectilinear shock waves. Comparing this condition with that for the uniform stability of shock waves in isentropic gas dynamics, we make the conclusion that the elastic force plays stabilizing role. In particular, we show that, as in isentropic gas dynamics, all compressive shock waves are uniformly stable for convex equations of state. Moreover, for some particular deformations (and general equations of state), by the direct test of the uniform Kreiss-Lopatinski condition we show that the stability condition found by the energy method is not only sufficient but also necessary for uniform stability. As is known, uniform stability implies structural stability of corresponding curved shock waves.

Shock waves and characteristic discontinuities in ideal compressible two-fluid MHD

We are concerned with a model of ideal compressible isentropic two-fluid magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Introducing an entropy-like function, we reduce the equations of two-fluid MHD to a symmetric form which looks like the classical MHD system written in the nonconservative form in terms of the pressure, the velocity, the magnetic field and the entropy. This gives a number of instant results. In particular, we conclude that all compressive extreme shock waves exist locally in time in the limit of weak magnetic field. We write down a condition sufficient for the local-in-time existence of current-vortex sheets in two-fluid flows. For the 2D case and a particular equation of state, we make the conclusion that contact discontinuities in two-fluid MHD flows exist locally in time provided that the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition on the jump of the normal derivative of the pressure is satisfied at the first moment.

Elementary symmetrization of inviscid two-fluid flow equations giving a number of instant results

We consider two models of a compressible inviscid isentropic two-fluid flow. The first one describes the liquid-gas two-phase flow. The second one can describe the mixture of two fluids of different densities or the mixture of fluid and particles. Introducing an entropy-like function, we reduce the equations of both models to a symmetric form which looks like the compressible Euler equations written in the nonconservative form in terms of the pressure, the velocity and the entropy. Basing on existing results for the Euler equations, this gives a number of instant results for both models. In particular, we conclude that all compressive shock waves in these models exist locally in time. For the 2D case, we make the conclusion about the local-in-time existence of vortex sheets under a "supersonic" stability condition. In the sense of a much lower regularity requirement for the initial data, our result for 2D vortex sheets essentially improves a recent result for vortex sheets in the liquid-gas two-phase flow.

Well-posedness of the free boundary problem in compressible elastodynamics

We study the free boundary problem for the flow of a compressible isentropic inviscid elastic fluid. At the free boundary moving with the velocity of the fluid particles the columns of the deformation gradient are tangent to the boundary and the pressure vanishes outside the flow domain. We prove the local-in-time existence of a unique smooth solution of the free boundary problem provided that among three columns of the deformation gradient there are two which are non-collinear vectors at each point of the initial free boundary. If this non-collinearity condition fails, the local-in-time existence is proved under the classical Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition satisfied at the first moment. By constructing an Hadamard-type ill-posedness example for the frozen coefficients linearized problem we show that the simultaneous failure of the non-collinearity condition and the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition leads to Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

Local existence of MHD contact discontinuities

We prove the local-in-time existence of solutions with a contact discontinuity of the equations of ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) for 2D planar flows provided that the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition $[\partial p/\partial N]<0$ on the jump of the normal derivative of the pressure is satisfied at each point of the initial discontinuity. MHD contact discontinuities are characteristic discontinuities with no flow across the discontinuity for which the pressure, the magnetic field and the velocity are continuous whereas the density and the entropy may have a jump. This paper is a natural completion of our previous analysis [Morando A., Trakhinin Y., Trebeschi P., J. Differential Equations 258:2531--2571, 2015] where the well-posedness in Sobolev spaces of the linearized problem was proved under the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition satisfied at each point of the unperturbed discontinuity. The proof of the resolution of the nonlinear problem given in the present paper follows from a suitable tame a priori estimate in Sobolev spaces for the linearized equations and a Nash-Moser iteration.
