Abelian fibrations and rational points on symmetric products

Given a variety over a number field, are its rational points potentially dense, i.e., does there exist a finite extension over which rational points are Zariski dense? We study the question of potential density for symmetric products of surfaces. Contrary to the situation for curves, rational points are not necessarily potentially dense on a sufficiently high symmetric product. Our main result is that rational points are potentially dense for the Nth symmetric product of a K3 surface, where N is explicitly determined by the geometry of the surface. The basic construction is that for some N, the Nth symmetric power of a K3 surface is birational to an abelian fibration over P^N. It is an interesting geometric problem to find the smallest N with this property.

Density of rational points on elliptic K3 surfaces

Let $X$ be a K3 surface defined over a number field $K$. Assume that $X$ admits a structure of an elliptic fibration or an infinite group of automorphisms. Then there exists a finite extension $K'/K$ such that the set of $K'$-rational points is Zariski dense in $X$.

Geometry of equivariant compactifications of $G^n_a$

Equivariant compactifications of reductive groups can be described by combinatorial data. On the other hand, equivariant compactifications of the additive group G^n_a are more complicated in at least two respects. First, they often admit moduli. Second, even simple varieties (like projective spaces) admit many different structures as equivariant compactifications of the additive group. We give a dictionary relating Artinian local rings, certain systems of partial differential equations, and equivariant compactifications of G^n_a. As an application, we classify the structures on varieties like projective spaces, ruled surfaces, and certain threefolds. We consider these results as a first step in a systematic study of G^n_a-equivariant birational geometry.

Torseurs arithmetiques et espaces fibres

To study problems involving heights as, eg, Manin's conjecture on the number of points of bounded height on an algebraic variety defined over a number field, it is desirable to have a good normalization of these height functions. We show how one can define these on fiber spaces. The construction uses the notion of an ``arithmetic torsor'', which is the analogue for a general algebraic group of adding a hermitian metric at infinity for vector bundles.

Rational Points on Quartics

Let $S \subset ¶^n$ be a smooth quartic hypersurface defined over a number field $K$. If $n \ge 4$, then for some finite extension $K'$ of $K$ the set $S(K')$ of $K'$-rational points of $S$ is Zariski dense.

Height Zeta Functions of Toric Varieties

We investigate analytic properties of height zeta functions of toric varieties. Using the height zeta functions, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height with respect to an arbitrary line bundle whose first Chern class is contained in the interior of the cone of effective divisors

Rational points on some Fano cubic bundles

We consider some families of smooth Fano hypersurfaces $X_{n+2}$ in ${\bf P}^{n+2} \times {\bf P}^3$ given by a homogeneous polynomial of bidegree $(1,3)$. For these varieties we obtain lower bounds for the number of $F$-rational points of bounded anticanonical height in arbitrary nonempty Zariski open subset $U \subset X_{n+2}$. These bounds contradict previous expectations about the distribution of $F$-rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties.

Manin's conjecture for toric varieties

We prove an asymptotic formula conjectured by Manin for the number of $K$-rational points of bounded height with respect to the anticanonical line bundle for arbitrary smooth projective toric varieties over a number field $K$.
