Translational dynamics of diatomic molecule in magnetic quadrupole trap

We study the translational motions of homonuclear diatomic molecules prepared in their ${}^3\Sigma$ electronic states, deeply bound vibrational states, and rotational states of well-defined parity. The trapping potential arises due to the interaction of the total spin of electrons and orbital angular momentum of nuclei with the trap's quadrupole magnetic field. The translational motion of a molecule is treated classically. We examine the Hamilton equations that govern the center of mass dynamics numerically and analytically. Using data of a hydrogen molecule at the ground vibrational state, we present global dynamics using the Poincar\'e section method and various types of trajectories: periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic. We prove that the Hamiltonian system governing this motion is non-integrable. The particle's orbits are confined to a bound region of space that grows with energy, but for small energies (< 1.8 K), the motion is restricted to a processing chamber (a few centimetres). Solutions of equations of motion occurring on the symmetry axis and the horizontal plane are expressed in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions.

Electrodynamics in flat spacetime of six dimensions

We consider the dynamics of a classical charge in flat spacetime of six dimensions. The mass shell relation of a free charge admits nonlinear oscillations. Having analyzed the problem of on eigenvalues and eigenvectors of Faraday tensor, we establish the algebraic structure of electromagnetic field in 6D. We elaborate the classification scheme based on three field's invariants. Using the basic algebraic properties of the electromagnetic field tensor we analyze the motion of a charge in constant electromagnetic field. Its world line is a combination of hyperbolic and circular orbits which lie in three mutually orthogonal sheets of two dimensions. Within the braneworld scenario, we project the theory on the de Sitter space of four dimensions. Actually, as it turns out, spins of elementary particles themselves are manifestations of extra dimensions.

Relativistic shifts of eigenfrequencies in an ideal Penning trap

First-order perturbative calculation of the frequency-shifts caused by special relativity is performed for a charged particle confined in a Penning trap. The perturbed motion is approximated by the Jacobian elliptic functions which describe the periodic orbit repeating itself sinuously with a period that exceeds $2π$. We find relativistic corrections to amplitudes of oscillating modes as well as shifts of eigenfrequencies which depend on amplitudes. Besides we find the relativistic contributions to modular angles. In the low-energy limit the deformed orbit simplifies to the well-known combination of axial oscillation and in-plane motion consisting of two circular modes. We compare the results with the model of relativistic frequency-shifts developed by J. Ketter {\em et al.}

Exact solution to the Landau-Lifshitz equation in a constant electromagnetic field

We are interested in the motion of a classical charge acted upon an external constant electromagnetic field where the back reaction of the particle's own field is taken into account. The Landau-Lifshitz approximation to the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac equation is solved exactly and in closed form. It is shown that the ultrarelativistic limit of the Landau-Lifshitz equation for a radiating charge is the equation for eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the external electromagnetic field tensor.

Radiation Reaction in Classical Field Theory

Studies of the classical theory of charged particles and their radiation initiated by Lorentz and Abraham have attracted our attention over a century. Nevertheless, the correct equation to describe the motion of a point charged particle is still a matter of controversy. And what about a charge "living" inside Flatland, a hypothetical world of two spatial dimensions? What is the equation of motion of a point charge in six dimensions? This book provides a self-contained and systematic introduction to problems of radiation and radiation reaction in classical field theory. Besides conventional electrodynamics in four dimensions (one time dimension and three spatial ones), we consider exotic worlds of dimensions other than four which arise in various research areas, e. g. in string theory, physics of graphene, dynamics of superfluid 4He film etc. Thorough analysis is given to radiation phenomena and charges' equations of motions where the radiation reaction is taken into account. The intended audience is physicist who works in relative fields or graduate student who wants a short exposition of classical electrodynamics in the language of coordinate-free differential geometry. Renormalization and radiation reaction in 2+1 electrodynamics

We consider a self-action problem for an electric charge arbitrarily moving in flat spacetime of three dimensions. Its electromagnetic field satisfies the Maxwell equations in Minkowski space of three dimensions. In this space electromagnetic waves propagate not just at a speed of light, but also at all speeds smaller than or equal to the speed of light. The massive particle may "fill" its own field, which acts on it just like an external one. The radiation reaction is determined by Lorentz force of point-like charge acting upon itself plus non-local term which provides finiteness of the self-action. The self-force produces a time-changing inertial mass. The relation between (2+1)-electrodynamics and dynamics of superfluid 4He film is emphasized.

Self-force via energy-momentum and angular momentum balance equations

The radiation reaction for a point-like charge coupled to a massive scalar field is considered. The retarded Green's function associated with the Klein-Gordon wave equation has support not only on the future light cone of the emission point (direct part), but extends inside the light cone as well (tail part). Dirac's scheme of decomposition of the retarded electromagnetic field into the "mean of the advanced and retarded field" and the "radiation" field is adapted to theories where Green's function consists of the direct and the tail parts. The Harish-Chandra equation of motion of radiating scalar charge under the influence of an external force is obtained. This equation includes effect of particle's own field. The self force produces a time-changing inertial mass.

Interference in the radiation of two point-like charges

Energy-momentum and angular momentum carried by electromagnetic field of two point-like charged particles arbitrarily moving in flat spacetime are presented. Apart from usual contributions to the Noether quantities produced separately by particles 1 and 2, the conservation laws contain also joint contribution due to the fields of both particles. The mixed part of Maxwell energy-momentum density is decomposed into bound and radiative components which are separately conserved off the world lines of particles. The former describes the deformation of electromagnetic clouds of ``bare'' charges due to mutual interaction while the latter defines the radiation which escapes to infinity. The bound terms contribute to particles' individual 4-momenta while the radiative ones exert the radiation reaction. Analysis of energy-momentum and angular momentum balance equations results the Lorentz-Dirac equation as an equation of motion for a pointed charge under the influence of its own electromagnetic field as well as field produced by another charge.

Radiation reaction and renormalization for a photon-like charged particle

A renormalization scheme which relies on energy-momentum and angular momentum balance equations is applied to the derivation of effective equation of motion for a massless point-like charge. Unlike the massive case, the rates of radiated energy-momentum and angular momentum tend to infinity whenever the source is accelerated. The external electromagnetic fields which do not change the velocity of the particle admit only its presence within the interaction area. The effective equation of motion is the equation on eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the electromagnetic tensor. The massless charges move along base line determined by the eigenvectors when the effective equation of motion possesses uniform solutions. It is interesting that the same solution arises in Rylov's model of magnetosphere of a rapidly rotating neutron star (pulsar).

Self force on a point-like source coupled with massive scalar field

The problem of determining the radiation reaction force experienced by a scalar charge moving in flat spacetime is investigated. A consistent renormalization procedure is used, which exploits the Poincaré invariance of the theory. Radiative parts of Noether quantities carried by massive scalar field are extracted. Energy-momentum and angular momentum balance equations yield Harish-Chandra equation of motion of radiating charge under the influence of an external force. This equation includes effect of particle's own field. The self force produces a time-changing inertial mass.

Radiation reaction and renormalization via conservation laws of the Poincare group

We consider the self-action problem in classical electrodynamics of a point-like charge arbitrarily moving in flat space-time of four or six dimensions. A consistent regularization procedure is proposed which exploits the symmetry properties of the theory. The energy-momentum and angular momentum balance equations allow us to derive the radiation reaction forces in both 4D and 6D. It is shown that a point-like source in 6D possesses an internal angular momentum with magnitude which is proportional to the square of acceleration. 6D action functional contains, apart from usual "bare" mass, an additional renormalization constant which corresponds to the curvature of the world line (i.e. to the magnitude of internal angular momentum of "bare" particle). It is demonstrated that the {\it Poincaré-invariant} six-dimensional electrodynamics is renormalizable theory.

Radiation reaction in 2+1 electrodynamics

A self-action problem for a pointlike charged particle arbitrarily moving in flat spacetime of three dimensions is considered. Outgoing waves carry energy-momentum and angular momentum; the radiation removes energy and angular momentum from the source which then undergoes a radiation reaction. We decompose Noether quantities carried by electromagnetic field into bound and radiative components. The bound terms are absorbed by individual particle's characteristics within the renormalization procedure. Radiative terms together with already renormalized 3-momentum and angular momentum of pointlike charge constitute the total conserved quantities of our particle plus field system. Their differential consequences yield the effective equation of motion of radiating charge in an external electromagnetic field. In this integrodifferential equation the radiation reaction is determined by Lorentz force of pointlike charge acting upon itself plus nonlocal term which provides finiteness of the self-action.

Radiation reaction, renormalization and conservation laws in six-dimensional classical electrodynamics

A self-action problem for a point-like charged particle arbitrarily moving in flat space-time of six dimensions is considered. A consistent regularization procedure is proposed which relies on energy-momentum and angular momentum balance equations. Structure of the angular momentum tensor carried by the retarded "Liénard-Wiechert" field testifies that a point-like source in six dimensions possesses an internal angular momentum. Its magnitude is proportional to the square of acceleration. It is the so-called {\em rigid} relativistic particle; its motion is determinated by the higher-derivative Lagrangian depending on the curvature of the world line. It is shown that action functional contains, apart from usual "bare" mass, an additional renormalization constant which corresponds to the magnitude of "bare" internal angular momentum of the particle.

Self force in 2+1 electrodynamics

The radiation reaction problem for an electric charge moving in flat space-time of three dimensions is discussed. The divergences stemming from the pointness of the particle are studied. A consistent regularization procedure is proposed, which exploits the Poincaré invariance of the theory. Effective equation of motion of radiating charge in an external electromagnetic field is obtained via the consideration of energy-momentum and angular momentum conservation. This equation includes the effect of the particle's own field. The radiation reaction is determined by the Lorentz force of point-like charge acting upon itself plus a non-local term which provides finiteness of the self-action.

Radiation Reaction, Renormalization and Poincaré Symmetry

We consider the self-action problem in classical electrodynamics of a massive point-like charge, as well as of a massless one. A consistent regularization procedure is proposed, which exploits the symmetry properties of the theory. The radiation reaction forces in both 4D and 6D are derived. It is demonstrated that the Poincaré-invariant six-dimensional electrodynamics of the massive charge is renormalizable theory. Unlike the massive case, the rates of radiated energy-momentum tend to infinity whenever the source is accelerated. The external electromagnetic fields, which do not change the velocity of the particle, admit only its presence within the interaction area. The effective equation of motion is the equation for eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the electromagnetic tensor. The interference part of energy-momentum radiated by two massive point charges arbitrarily moving in flat spacetime is evaluated. It is shown that the sum of work done by Lorentz forces of charges acting on one another exhausts the effect of combination of outgoing electromagnetic waves generated by the charges.

Interference of outgoing electromagnetic waves generated by two point-like sources

An energy-momentum carried by electromagnetic field produced by two point-like charged particles is calculated. Integration region considered in the evaluation of the bound and emitted quantities produced by all points of world lines up to the end points at which particles' trajectories puncture an observation hyperplane $y^0=t$. Radiative part of the energy-momentum contains, apart from usual integrals of Larmor terms, also the sum of work done by Lorentz forces of point-like charges acting on one another. Therefore, the combination of wave motions (retarded Liénard-Wiechert solutions) leads to the interaction between the sources.
