Matrix Random Walks and the Lima Bean Law

A matrix random walk is a stochastic process of the form $B_k = (I+A_1)\cdots(I+A_k)$ where $A_j$ are independent ``step'' matrices in $\mathrm{M}_N(\mathbb{C})$. With the right entry-covariance, a rescaled matrix random walk converges to Brownian motion $B(t)$ on a matrix Lie group. In this paper, we study the eigenvalues of such rescaled matrix random walks, as $N\to\infty$ and $k\to\infty$. The standard Brownian motion $W(t)$ on $\mathrm{M}_N(\mathbb{C})$ has independent Gaussian entries at each $t$. It is bi-invariant: mutiplying on the left or right by a unitary does not change the distribution. We prove that the empirical eigenvalue distribution of any matrix random walk $B_k$ with bi-invariant steps $A_j$ and initial distribution converges (for fixed $k$ as $N\to\infty$) to a probability measure on $\mathbb{C}$: the Brown measure of the free probability $\ast$-distribution limit $b_k$ of the random walk. If the steps $A_j$ are identically distributed with normalized Hilbert--Schmidt norm $\|A_j\|_2 = t$, the limit law of eigenvalues is supported on a compact ``lima bean'' shaped region. We explicitly compute the limit measure and region, and characterize their phase transitions as $t$ evolves. We prove that the Brown measure of $b_k$ converges as $k\to\infty$, to the Brown measure of the free multiplicative Brownian motion, assuming only that the steps are bi-invariant and normalized in Hilbert--Schmidt norm. Thus the Brownian motion is the universal limit of rescaled matrix random walks, under very general assumptions on the distribution of steps.

Norm Convergence Rate for Multivariate Quadratic Polynomials of Wigner Matrices

We study Hermitian non-commutative quadratic polynomials of multiple independent Wigner matrices. We prove that, with the exception of some specific reducible cases, the limiting spectral density of the polynomials always has a square root growth at its edges and prove an optimal local law around these edges. Combining these two results, we establish that, as the dimension $N$ of the matrices grows to infinity, the operator norm of such polynomials $q$ converges to a deterministic limit with a rate of convergence of $N^{-2/3+o(1)}$. Here, the exponent in the rate of convergence is optimal. For the specific reducible cases, we also provide a classification of all possible edge behaviours.

Mesoscopic Spectral CLT for Block Correlated Random Matrices

For random matrices with block correlation structure we show that the fluctuations of linear eigenvalue statistics are Gaussian on all mesoscopic scales with universal variance which coincides with that of the Gaussian unitary or Gaussian orthogonal ensemble, depending on the symmetry class of the model. The main tool used for determining this variance is a two-point version of the matrix-valued Dyson equation, that encodes the asymptotic behavior of the product of resolvents at different spectral parameters.

Scattering in quantum dots via noncommutative rational functions

In the customary random matrix model for transport in quantum dots with $M$ internal degrees of freedom coupled to a chaotic environment via $N\ll M$ channels, the density $ρ$ of transmission eigenvalues is computed from a specific invariant ensemble for which explicit formula for the joint probability density of all eigenvalues is available. We revisit this problem in the large $N$ regime allowing for (i) arbitrary ratio $ϕ:= N/M \le 1$; and (ii) general distributions for the matrix elements of the Hamiltonian of the quantum dot. In the limit $ϕ\to 0$ we recover the formula for the density $ρ$ that Beenakker (Rev. Mod. Phys., 69:731-808, 1997) has derived for a special matrix ensemble. We also prove that the inverse square root singularity of the density at zero and full transmission in Beenakker's formula persists for any $ϕ<1$ but in the borderline case $ϕ=1$ an anomalous $λ^{-2/3}$ singularity arises at zero. To access this level of generality we develop the theory of global and local laws on the spectral density of a large class of noncommutative rational expressions in large random matrices with i.i.d. entries.

Local laws for polynomials of Wigner matrices

We consider general self-adjoint polynomials in several independent random matrices whose entries are centered and have the same variance. We show that under certain conditions the local law holds up to the optimal scale, i.e., the eigenvalue density on scales just above the eigenvalue spacing follows the global density of states which is determined by free probability theory. We prove that these conditions hold for general homogeneous polynomials of degree two and for symmetrized products of independent matrices with i.i.d. entries, thus establishing the optimal bulk local law for these classes of ensembles. In particular, we generalize a similar result of Anderson for anticommutator. For more general polynomials our conditions are effectively checkable numerically.

Location of the spectrum of Kronecker random matrices

For a general class of large non-Hermitian random block matrices $\mathbf{X}$ we prove that there are no eigenvalues away from a deterministic set with very high probability. This set is obtained from the Dyson equation of the Hermitization of $\mathbf{X}$ as the self-consistent approximation of the pseudospectrum. We demonstrate that the analysis of the matrix Dyson equation from [arXiv:1604.08188v4] offers a unified treatment of many structured matrix ensembles.

No outliers in the spectrum of the product of independent non-Hermitian random matrices with independent entries

We consider products of independent square random non-Hermitian matrices. More precisely, let $n\geq 2$ and let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be independent $N\times N$ random matrices with independent centered entries with variance $N^{-1}$. It was shown by Götze and Tikhomirov and by Soshnikov and O'Rourke that the limit of the empirical spectral distribution of the product $X_1\cdots X_n$ is supported in the unit disk. We prove that if the entries of the matrices $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ satisfy uniform subexponential decay condition, then the spectral radius of $X_1\cdots X_n$ converges to 1 almost surely as $N\rightarrow \infty$.

Local law for the product of independent non-Hermitian matrices with independent entries

We consider products of independent square non-Hermitian random matrices. More precisely, let X(1),...,X(n) be random matrices with independent entries (real or complex with independent real and imaginary parts) with zero mean and variance 1/N. Soshnikov and O'Rourke showed that the empirical spectral distribution of the product X(1)X(2)..X(n) converges to the n-th power of the circular law. We prove that if the entries of the matrices X(1),...,X(n) satisfy uniform subexponential decay condition, then in the bulk the convergence of the ESD holds up to the optimal scale.
