On geometrically finite degenerations I: boundaries of main hyperbolic components

In this paper, we develop a theory on the degenerations of Blaschke products $\mathcal{B}_d$ to study the boundaries of hyperbolic components. We give a combinatorial classification of geometrically finite polynomials on the boundary of the main hyperbolic component $\mathcal{H}_d$ containing $z^d$. We show the closure $\overline{\mathcal{H}_d}$ is not a topological manifold with boundary for $d\geq 4$ by constructing self-bumps on its boundary.

Trees, length spectra for rational maps via barycentric extensions and Berkovich spaces

In this paper, we study the dynamics of degenerating sequences of rational maps on Riemann sphere $\hat{\mathbb{C}}$ using $\mathbb{R}$-trees. Given a sequence of degenerating rational maps, we give two constructions for limiting dynamics on $\mathbb{R}$-trees: one geometric and one algebraic. The geometric construction uses the ultralimit of rescalings of barycentric extensions of rational maps, while the algebraic construction uses the Berkovich space of complexified Robinson's field. We show the two approaches are equivalent. The limiting dynamics on the $\mathbb{R}$-tree are analogues to isometric group actions on $\mathbb{R}$-trees studied in Kleinian groups and Teichmüller theory. We use the limiting map to classify hyperbolic components of rational maps that admit degeneracies with bounded length spectra (multipliers).

On geometrically finite degenerations II: convergence and divergence

In this paper, we study quasi post-critically finite degenerations for rational maps. We construct limits for such degenerations as geometrically finite rational maps on a finite tree of Riemann spheres. We prove the boundedness for such degenerations of hyperbolic rational maps with Sierpinski carpet Julia set and give criteria for the convergence for quasi-Blaschke products $\mathcal{QB}_d$, making progress towards the analogues of Thurston's compactness theorem for acylindrical $3$-manifold and the double limit theorem for quasi-Fuchsian groups in complex dynamics. In the appendix, we apply such convergence results to show the existence of certain polynomial matings.

Limits of rational maps, R-trees and barycentric extension

In this paper, we show that one can naturally associate a limiting dynamical system $F: T\longrightarrow T$ on an $\R$-tree to any degenerating sequence of rational maps $f_n: \hat\C \longrightarrow \hat\C$ of fixed degree. The construction of $F$ is in $2$ steps: first we use barycentric extension to get $\E f_n : \Hyp^3 \longrightarrow \Hyp^3$; second, we take appropriate limit on rescalings of hyperbolic space. An important ingredient we prove here is that the Lipschitz constant depends only on the degree of the rational map. We show that the dynamics of $F$ records the limiting length spectra of the sequence $f_n$.

Circle packings, kissing reflection groups and critically fixed anti-rational maps

In this paper, we establish an explicit correspondence between kissing reflection groups and critically fixed anti-rational maps. The correspondence, which is expressed using simple planar graphs, has several dynamical consequences. As an application of this correspondence, we give complete answers to geometric mating problems for critically fixed anti-rational maps.

On hyperbolic rational maps with finitely connected Fatou sets

In this paper, we study hyperbolic rational maps with finitely connected Fatou sets. We construct models of post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping schemes for such maps, generalizing post-critically finite rational maps in the case of connected Julia set. We show they are general limits of rational maps as we quasiconformally stretch the dynamics. Conversely, we use quasiconformal surgery to show any post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping scheme arises as such a limit. We construct abundant examples thanks to the flexibilities of the models, and use them to construct a sequence of rational maps of a fixed degree with infinitely many non-monomial rescaling limits.

On the inhomogeneity of the Mandelbrot set

We will show the Mandelbrot set $M$ is locally conformally inhomogeneous: the only conformal map $f$ defined in an open set $U$ intersecting $\partial M$ and satisfying $f(U\cap\partial M)\subset \partial M$ is the identity map. The proof uses the study of local conformal symmetries of the Julia sets of polynomials: we will show in many cases, the dynamics can be recovered from the local conformal structure of the Julia sets.

Moser's Shadow Problem

Moser's shadow problem asks to estimate the shadow function $\mathfrak{s}_b(n)$, which is the largest number such that for each bounded convex polyhedron $P$ with $n$ vertices in $3$-space there is some direction ${\bf v}$ (depending on $P$) such that, when illuminated by parallel light rays from infinity in direction ${\bf v}$, the polyhedron casts a shadow having at least $\mathfrak{s}_b(n)$ vertices. A general version of the problem allows unbounded polyhedra as well, and has associated shadow function $\mathfrak{s}_u(n)$. This paper presents correct order of magnitude asymptotic bounds on these functions. The bounded case has answer $\mathfrak{s}_b(n) = Θ\big( \log (n)/ (\log(\log (n))\big$. The unbounded shadow problem is shown to have the different asymptotic growth rate $\mathfrak{s}_u(n) = Θ\big(1\big)$. Results on the bounded shadow problem follow from 1989 work of Chazelle, Edelsbrunner and Guibas on the (bounded) silhouette span number $\mathfrak{s}_b^{\ast}(n)$, defined analogously but with arbitrary light sources. We complete the picture by showing that the unbounded silhouette span number $\mathfrak{s}_u^{\ast}(n)$ grows as $Θ\big( \log (n)/ (\log(\log (n))\big)$.

Optimal Scheduling of Electrolyzer in Power Market with Dynamic Prices

Optimal scheduling of hydrogen production in dynamic pricing power market can maximize the profit of hydrogen producer; however, it highly depends on the accurate forecast of hydrogen consumption. In this paper, we propose a deep leaning based forecasting approach for predicting hydrogen consumption of fuel cell vehicles in future taxi industry. The cost of hydrogen production is minimized by utilizing the proposed forecasting tool to reduce the hydrogen produced during high cost on-peak hours and guide hydrogen producer to store sufficient hydrogen during low cost off-peak hours.

Real Time Impact Control on Charging Energy Storage For Shipboard Power Systems

Medium voltage direct-current based integrated power system is projected as one of the solutions for powering the all-electric ship. It faces significant challenges for accurately energizing advanced loads, especially the pulsed power load, which can be rail gun, high power radar, and other state of art equipment. Energy storage based on supercapacitors is proposed as a technique for buffering the direct impact of pulsed power load on the power systems. However, the high magnitude of charging current of the energy storage can pose as a disturbance to both distribution and generation systems. This paper presents a fast switching device based real time control system that can achieve a desired balance between maintaining the required power quality and fast charging the energy storage in required time. Test results are shown to verify the performance of the proposed control algorithm.

Weakly Circle-Preserving Maps in Inversive Geometry

Let S^n be the standard n-sphere embedded in R^{n+1}. A mapping T: S^n \to S^n, not assumed continuous or even measurable, nor injective, is called weakly circle-preserving if the image of any circle under T is contained in some circle in the range space S^n. The main result of this paper shows that any weakly circle-preserving map satisfying a very mild condition on its range T(S^n) must be a Mobius transformation.

Colorings of the n-sphere and inversive geometry

This paper shows that in dimensions n \geq 2 for any partition of the set of points in the standard n-sphere \sum_{i=0}^n x_i^2 =1 in R^{n+1} into (n+3) or more nonempty sets, there exists a hyperplane in R^{n+1} that intersects at least (n+2) of these sets. This result is used to prove a result in inversive geometry. A mapping T: S^2 \to S^n, for n\geq 2,not assumed continuous or even measurable, is called weakly circle-preserving if the image of any circle is contained in some circle in the range space S^n. If such a map T has a range T(S^2) in circular general position, meaning that any circle in the S^n misses at least two points of T(S^2), then T must be a Mobius transformation of S^2.
