Bound states of solitons in fiber lasers

This article presents a systematic review of theoretical and experimental findings for bound states of two and several dissipative solitons in fiber lasers. The theoretical basis underlying the formation and stabilization of soliton molecules in the fibers, which is provided by the complex Ginzburg-Landau equations and bound states of such equations, is presented in necessary detail, which is followed by a detailed presentation of experimental findings, including very recent ones. In particular, included are the results for the multi-soliton bound states in the fibers, as well as for the bound states in the temporal and frequency domains, single-component (scalar) and two-component (vector), two- and multi-soliton modes, as well as for bound states of spatiotemporal dissipative solitons in the lasers based on multimode fibers.

Deblending Overlapping Galaxies in DECaLS Using Transformer-Based Algorithm: A Method Combining Multiple Bands and Data Types

In large-scale galaxy surveys, particularly deep ground-based photometric studies, galaxy blending is inevitable and poses a potential primary systematic uncertainty for upcoming surveys. Current deblenders predominantly rely on analytical modeling of galaxy profiles, facing limitations due to inflexible and imprecise models. We present a novel approach using a U-net structured transformer-based network for deblending astronomical images, which we term the CAT-deblender. It was trained using both RGB and grz-band images, spanning two distinct data formats from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) database, including galaxies with diverse morphologies. Our method requires only the approximate central coordinates of each target galaxy, bypassing assumptions on neighboring source counts. Post-deblending, our RGB images retain a high signal-to-noise peak, showing superior structural similarity to ground truth. For multi-band images, the ellipticity of central galaxies and median reconstruction error for the r-band consistently lie within +/-0.025 to +/-0.25, revealing minimal pixel residuals. In our comparison focused on flux recovery, our model shows a mere 1 percent error in magnitude recovery for quadruply blended galaxies, significantly outperforming SExtractor's higher error rate of 4.8 percent. By cross-matching with publicly accessible overlapping galaxy catalogs from the DECaLS database, we successfully deblended 433 overlapping galaxies. Furthermore, we demonstrated effective deblending of 63,733 blended galaxy images randomly selected from the DECaLS database.

Dichromatic breather molecules in a mode-locked fiber laser

Bound states of solitons (molecules) occur in various settings, playing an important role in the operation of fiber lasers, optical emulations, encoding, and communications. Soliton interactions are generally related to breathing dynamics in nonlinear dissipative systems, maintaining potential applications in spectroscopy. In the present work, dichromatic breather molecules (DBMs) are created in a synchronized mode-locked fiber laser. Real-time delay-shifting interference spectra are measured to display the temporal evolution of the DBMs, that cannot be observed by means of the usual real-time spectroscopy. As a result, robust out-of-phase vibrations are found as a typical intrinsic mode of DBMs. The same bound states are produced numerically in the framework of a model combining equations for the population inversion in the mode-locked laser and XPM-coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations for amplitudes of the optical fields in the fiber segments of the laser cavity. The results demonstrate that the Q-switching instability induces the onset of breathing oscillations. The findings offer new possibilities for the design of various regimes of the operation of ultrafast lasers.

The Monocular Depth Estimation Challenge

This paper summarizes the results of the first Monocular Depth Estimation Challenge (MDEC) organized at WACV2023. This challenge evaluated the progress of self-supervised monocular depth estimation on the challenging SYNS-Patches dataset. The challenge was organized on CodaLab and received submissions from 4 valid teams. Participants were provided a devkit containing updated reference implementations for 16 State-of-the-Art algorithms and 4 novel techniques. The threshold for acceptance for novel techniques was to outperform every one of the 16 SotA baselines. All participants outperformed the baseline in traditional metrics such as MAE or AbsRel. However, pointcloud reconstruction metrics were challenging to improve upon. We found predictions were characterized by interpolation artefacts at object boundaries and errors in relative object positioning. We hope this challenge is a valuable contribution to the community and encourage authors to participate in future editions.

Image Quality Assessment with Gradient Siamese Network

In this work, we introduce Gradient Siamese Network (GSN) for image quality assessment. The proposed method is skilled in capturing the gradient features between distorted images and reference images in full-reference image quality assessment(IQA) task. We utilize Central Differential Convolution to obtain both semantic features and detail difference hidden in image pair. Furthermore, spatial attention guides the network to concentrate on regions related to image detail. For the low-level, mid-level and high-level features extracted by the network, we innovatively design a multi-level fusion method to improve the efficiency of feature utilization. In addition to the common mean square error supervision, we further consider the relative distance among batch samples and successfully apply KL divergence loss to the image quality assessment task. We experimented the proposed algorithm GSN on several publicly available datasets and proved its superior performance. Our network won the second place in NTIRE 2022 Perceptual Image Quality Assessment Challenge track 1 Full-Reference.

XPM-forced frequency-oscillating soliton in mode-locked fiber laser

Cross phase modulation (XPM) could induce soliton trapping in nonlinear medium, which has been employed to achieve vector soliton, optical switching and optical analog of gravity-like potentials. These results are generally within the definition in Hamilton system. Here, we report on the observation of a XPM-forced frequency-oscillating soliton (XFOS) whose wavelength exhibits redshift and blueshift periodically like dancing in a mode-locked fiber laser under moderate birefringence. XFOS consists of two orthogonally polarized components exhibiting simultaneous frequency oscillation driven by XPM and gain effect, which allows withstanding higher pulse energy. The pulse trapping is maintained by differentiating the frequency-shift rate. Numerical simulations agree very well with experimental results, revealing an idiosyncratic evolution dynamic for asymmetry pulses in nonlinear dissipative system and envisaging a technique to control pulse feature with preset pulse chirp. XFOS may exist generally in polarization-independent ultrafast lasers, which enriches soliton family and brings useful insights into nonlinear science and applications.

Observation of multi-soliton asynchronous buildup dynamics in all-PM mode-locked lasers

Ultrafast transient phenomena are the most important research field in nonlinear systems, and the mode-locking fiber laser provides an excellent research platform for ultrafast transient phenomena. We report on the experimental observation of multi-soliton asynchronous buildup dynamics in all-polarization-maintaining mode-locked fiber laser. The build-up dynamics display several novel features. The different solitons in multi-soliton generation are produced asynchronously instead of simultaneously. Solitons generated at different time have different propagation speeds at metastable state and same speeds at stable state, indicating that different solitons have different energy at metastable state. The intra-cavity energy exhibits quantization property with respect to the build-up process. A proportion of background pulse vanished with respect to the birth of new pulse, which shows the jungle law in fiber laser system. The buildup dynamics may benefit the research of ultrafast pulse generation, interaction, regulation, energy improvement, and stability improvement.
