Exponential ergodicity and finite-dimensional approximation for Markovian lifts of stochastic Volterra equations

This paper investigates the long-time asymptotics and the existence of stationary solutions for a class of stochastic Volterra equations (SVEs). To address the non-Markovian nature of SVEs, we employ a Markovian lifting technique, formulating a Markovian lift as the solution to a stochastic evolution equation (SEE) on a Gelfand triplet. Our main objective is to establish the ergodicity of this Markovian lift via the generalized Harris' theorem, which in turn yields the asymptotic results for the original SVE. Despite the challenges posed by the highly degenerate, infinite-dimensional nature of the SEE, we achieve this by constructing a generalized coupling and a distance function that exploit the structural properties arising from the non-local operators in its coefficients. Furthermore, we prove that the invariant probability measure and, more generally, the stationary law on the path space of the SEE can be weakly approximated by those of finite-dimensional SDEs. This yields a novel approximation result for the stationary solution of the original SVE, while offering a rigorous mathematical framework that supports the validity of the Markovian embedding concept widely utilized in statistical physics.

Global maximum principle for optimal control of stochastic Volterra equations with singular kernels: An infinite dimensional approach

In this paper, we consider optimal control problems of stochastic Volterra equations (SVEs) with singular kernels, where the control domain is not necessarily convex. We establish a global maximum principle by means of the spike variation technique. To do so, we first show a Taylor type expansion of the controlled SVE with respect to the spike variation, where the convergence rates of the remainder terms are characterized by the singularity of the kernels. Next, assuming additional structure conditions for the kernels, we convert the variational SVEs appearing in the expansion to their infinite dimensional lifts. Then, we derive first and second order adjoint equations in form of infinite dimensional backward stochastic evolution equations (BSEEs) on weighted $L^2$ spaces. Moreover, we show the well-posedness of the new class of BSEEs on weighted $L^2$ spaces in a general setting.

A generalized coupling approach for the weak approximation of stochastic functional differential equations

In this paper, we study functional type weak approximation of weak solutions of stochastic functional differential equations by means of the Euler--Maruyama scheme. Under mild assumptions on the coefficients, we provide a quantitative error estimate for the weak approximation in terms of the L\'evy--Prokhorov metric of probability laws on the path space. The weak error estimate obtained in this paper is sharp in the topological and quantitative senses in some special cases. We apply our main result to ten concrete examples appearing in a wide range of science and obtain a weak error estimate for each model. The proof of the main result is based on the so-called generalized coupling of probability measures.

Periodic portfolio selection with quasi-hyperbolic discounting

We introduce an infinite-horizon, continuous-time portfolio selection problem faced by an agent with periodic S-shaped preference and present bias. The inclusion of a quasi-hyperbolic discount function leads to time-inconsistency and we characterize the optimal portfolio for a pre-committing, naive and sophisticated agent respectively. In the more theoretically challenging problem with a sophisticated agent, the time-consistent planning strategy can be formulated as an equilibrium to a static mean field game. Interestingly, present bias and naivety do not necessarily result in less desirable risk taking behaviors, while agent's sophistication may lead to excessive leverage (underinvestement) in the bad (good) states of the world.

Weak well-posedness of stochastic Volterra equations with completely monotone kernels and non-degenerate noise

We establish weak existence and uniqueness in law for stochastic Volterra equations (SVEs for short) with completely monotone kernels and non-degenerate noise under mild regularity assumptions. In particular, our results reveal the regularization-by-noise effect for SVEs with singular kernels, allowing for multiplicative noise with H\"{o}lder diffusion coefficients. In order to prove our results, we reformulate the SVE into an equivalent stochastic evolution equation (SEE for short) defined on a Gelfand triplet of Hilbert spaces. We prove weak well-posedness of the SEE using stochastic control arguments, and then translate it into the original SVE.

Markovian lifting and asymptotic log-Harnack inequality for stochastic Volterra integral equations

We introduce a new framework of Markovian lifts of stochastic Volterra integral equations (SVIEs for short) with completely monotone kernels. We define the state space of the Markovian lift as a separable Hilbert space which incorporates the singularity or regularity of the kernel into the definition. We show that the solution of an SVIE is represented by the solution of a lifted stochastic evolution equation (SEE for short) defined on the Hilbert space and prove the existence, uniqueness and Markov property of the solution of the lifted SEE. Furthermore, we establish an asymptotic log-Harnack inequality and some consequent properties for the Markov semigroup associated with the Markovian lift via the asymptotic coupling method.

On the maximum principle for optimal control problems of stochastic Volterra integral equations with delay

In this paper, we prove both necessary and sufficient maximum principles for infinite horizon discounted control problems of stochastic Volterra integral equations with finite delay and a convex control domain. The corresponding adjoint equation is a novel class of infinite horizon anticipated backward stochastic Volterra integral equations. Our results can be applied to discounted control problems of stochastic delay differential equations and fractional stochastic delay differential equations. As an example, we consider a stochastic linear-quadratic regulator problem for a delayed fractional system. Based on the maximum principle, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the optimal control for this concrete example and obtain a new type of explicit Gaussian state-feedback representation formula for the optimal control.

Variation of constants formulae for forward and backward stochastic Volterra integral equations

In this paper, we provide variation of constants formulae for linear (forward) stochastic Volterra integral equations (SVIEs, for short) and linear Type-II backward stochastic Volterra integral equations (BSVIEs, for short) in the usual Itô's framework. For these purposes, we define suitable classes of stochastic Volterra kernels and introduce new notions of the products of adapted $L^2$-processes. Observing the algebraic properties of the products, we obtain the variation of constants formulae by means of the corresponding resolvent. Our framework includes SVIEs with singular kernels such as fractional stochastic differential equations. Also, our results can be applied to general classes of SVIEs and BSVIEs with infinitely many iterated stochastic integrals. The duality principle between generalized SVIEs and generalized BSVIEs is also proved.

Linear-quadratic stochastic Volterra controls II: Optimal strategies and Riccati--Volterra equations

In this paper, we study linear-quadratic control problems for stochastic Volterra integral equations with singular and non-convolution-type coefficients. The weighting matrices in the cost functional are not assumed to be non-negative definite. From a new viewpoint, we formulate a framework of causal feedback strategies. The existence and the uniqueness of a causal feedback optimal strategy are characterized by means of the corresponding Riccati--Volterra equation.

Linear-quadratic stochastic Volterra controls I: Causal feedback strategies

In this paper, we formulate and investigate the notion of causal feedback strategies arising in linear-quadratic control problems for stochastic Volterra integral equations (SVIEs) with singular and non-convolution-type coefficients. We show that there exists a unique solution, which we call the causal feedback solution, to the closed-loop system of a controlled SVIE associated with a causal feedback strategy. Furthermore, introducing two novel equations named a Type-II extended backward stochastic Volterra integral equation and a Lyapunov--Volterra equation, we prove a duality principle and a representation formula for a quadratic functional of controlled SVIEs in the framework of causal feedback strategies.

Infinite horizon backward stochastic Volterra integral equations and discounted control problems

Infinite horizon backward stochastic Volterra integral equations (BSVIEs for short) are investigated. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the adapted M-solution in a weighted $L^2$-space. Furthermore, we extend some important known results for finite horizon BSVIEs to the infinite horizon setting. We provide a variation of constant formula for a class of infinite horizon linear BSVIEs and prove a duality principle between a linear (forward) stochastic Volterra integral equation (SVIE for short) and an infinite horizon linear BSVIE in a weighted $L^2$-space. As an application, we investigate infinite horizon stochastic control problems for SVIEs with discounted cost functional. We establish both necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality by means of Pontryagin's maximum principle, where the adjoint equation is described as an infinite horizon BSVIE. These results are applied to discounted control problems for fractional stochastic differential equations and stochastic integro-differential equations.

Approximations for adapted M-solutions of Type-II backward stochastic Volterra integral equations

In this paper, we study a class of Type-II backward stochastic Volterra integral equations (BSVIEs). For the adapted M-solutions, we obtain two approximation results, namely, a BSDE approximation and a numerical approximation. The BSDE approximation means that the solution of a finite system of backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) converges to the adapted M-solution of the original equation. As a consequence of the BSDE approximation, we obtain an estimate for the $L^2$-time regularity of the adapted M-solutions of Type-II BSVIEs. For the numerical approximation, we provide a backward Euler--Maruyama scheme, and show that the scheme converges in the strong $L^2$-sense with the convergence speed of order $1/2$. These results hold true without any differentiability conditions for the coefficients.

Time-inconsistent consumption-investment problems in incomplete markets under general discount functions

In this paper, we study a time-inconsistent consumption-investment problem with random endowments in a possibly incomplete market under general discount functions. We provide a necessary condition and a verification theorem for an open-loop equilibrium consumption-investment pair in terms of a coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equation. Moreover, we prove the uniqueness of the open-loop equilibrium pair by showing that the original time-inconsistent problem is equivalent to an associated time-consistent one.

Extended backward stochastic Volterra integral equations and their applications to time-inconsistent stochastic recursive control problems

In this paper, we study extended backward stochastic Volterra integral equations (EBSVIEs, for short). We establish the well-posedness under weaker assumptions than the literature, and prove a new kind of regularity property for the solutions. As an application, we investigate, in the open-loop framework, a time-inconsistent stochastic recursive control problem where the cost functional is defined by the solution to a backward stochastic Volterra integral equation (BSVIE, for short). We show that the corresponding adjoint equations become EBSVIEs, and provide a necessary and sufficient condition for an open-loop equilibrium control via variational methods.

Small-time solvability of a flow of forward-backward stochastic differential equations

Motivated from time-inconsistent stochastic control problems, we introduce a new type of coupled forward-backward stochastic systems, namely, flows of forward-backward stochastic differential equations. They are systems consisting of a single forward SDE and a continuum of BSDEs, which are defined on different time-intervals and connected via an equilibrium condition. We formulate a notion of equilibrium solutions in a general framework and prove small-time well-posedness of the equations. We also consider discretized flows and show that their equilibrium solutions approximate the original one, together with an estimate of the convergence rate.

BSDEs driven by cylindrical martingales with application to approximate hedging in bond markets

We consider Lipschitz-type backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) driven by cylindrical martingales on the space of continuous functions. We show the existence and uniqueness of the solution of such infinite-dimensional BSDEs and prove that the sequence of solutions of corresponding finite-dimensional BSDEs approximates the original solution. We also consider the hedging problem in bond markets and prove that, for an approximately attainable contingent claim, the sequence of locally risk-minimizing strategies based on small markets converges to the generalized hedging strategy.
