New perspectives in the duality of M-theory, heterotic strings, and F-theory

We discuss a new perspective on the dualities among seven-dimensional M-theory on elliptically fibered K3 surfaces, eight-dimensional (8D) heterotic strings on $T^2$, and 8D F-theory on elliptic K3 surfaces. There are several distinct small-fiber F-theory limits of a single M-theory, and we deduce that the distinct F-theory limits of an identical M-theory generally include both an F-theory limit, wherein a discrete gauge symmetry forms, and another F-theory limit, wherein a discrete gauge symmetry does not form. We also discuss constraints imposed on the degrees of discrete gauge groups and on the continuous gauge groups formed in F-theory on K3 surfaces by applying a formula that is known to hold for genus-one fibrations of K3 surfaces, and by utilizing the existence of the Jacobian fibrations.

Four-dimensional $N=1$ theories, S-fold constraints on T-branes, and behaviors in IR and UV

We analyze four-dimensional (4d) $N=1$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) obtained as deformations of 4d $N=2$ SCFTs on S-folds by tilting 7-branes. Geometric compatibility with the structures of S-folds constrains the forms of T-branes. As a result, brane monodromies are constrained. We also discuss two 4d $N=1$ theories on probe D3-branes, where the two theories behave identically in IR, but they originate from different theories in UV. Studying the global structure of their geometry is useful in constructing these two theories.

F-theory models with 3 to 8 U(1) factors on K3 surfaces

In this study, we construct four-dimensional F-theory models with 3 to 8 U(1) factors on products of K3 surfaces. We provide explicit Weierstrass equations of elliptic K3 surfaces with Mordell-Weil ranks of 3 to 8. We utilize the method of quadratic base change to glue pairs of rational elliptic surfaces together to yield the aforementioned types of K3 surfaces. The moduli of elliptic K3 surfaces constructed in the study include Kummer surfaces of specific complex structures. We show that the tadpole cancels in F-theory compactifications with flux when these Kummer surfaces are paired with appropriately selected attractive K3 surfaces. We determine the matter spectra on F-theory on the pairs.

JT gravity and the asymptotic Weil-Petersson volume

A path integral in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity is given by integrating over the volume of the moduli of Riemann surfaces with boundaries, known as the "Weil-Petersson volume," together with integrals over wiggles along the boundaries. The exact computation of the Weil-Petersson volume $V_{g,n}(b_1, \ldots, b_n)$ is difficult when the genus $g$ becomes large. We utilize two partial differential equations known to hold on the Weil-Petersson volumes to estimate asymptotic behaviors of the volume with two boundaries $V_{g,2}(b_1, b_2)$ and the volume with three boundaries $V_{g,3}(b_1, b_2, b_3)$ when the genus $g$ is large. Furthermore, we present a conjecture on the asymptotic expression for general $V_{g,n}(b_1, \ldots, b_n)$ with $n$ boundaries when $g$ is large.

A note on transition in discrete gauge groups in F-theory

We observe a new puzzling physical phenomenon in F-theory on the multisection geometry, wherein a model without a gauge group transitions to another model with a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_n$ gauge group via Higgsing. This phenomenon may suggest an unknown aspect of F-theory compactification on multisection geometry lacking a global section. A possible interpretation of this puzzling physical phenomenon is proposed in this note. We also propose a possible interpretation of another unnatural physical phenomenon observed for F-theory on four-section geometry, wherein a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge group transitions to a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_4$ gauge group via Higgsing as described in the previous literature.

Singularities of 1/2 Calabi-Yau 4-folds and classification scheme for gauge groups in four-dimensional F-theory

In a previous study, we constructed a family of elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-folds possessing a geometric structure that allowed them to be split into a pair of rational elliptic 4-folds. In the present study, we introduce a method of classifying the singularity types of this class of elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-folds. In brief, we propose a method to classify the non-Abelian gauge groups formed in four-dimensional (4D) $N=1$ F-theory for this class of elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-folds. To demonstrate our method, we explicitly construct several elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-folds belonging to this class and study the 4D F-theory thereupon. These constructions include a 4D model with two U(1) factors.

Types of gauge groups in six-dimensional F-theory on double covers of rational elliptic 3-folds

In this study, we analyze gauge groups in six-dimensional $N=1$ F-theory models. We construct elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds possessing various singularity types as double covers of "1/2 Calabi-Yau 3-folds", a class of rational elliptic 3-folds, by applying the method discussed in a previous study to classify the singularity types of the 1/2 Calabi-Yau 3-folds. One to three U(1) factors are formed in six-dimensional F-theory on the constructed Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The singularity types of the constructed Calabi-Yau 3-folds corresponding to the non-Abelian gauge group factors in six-dimensional F-theory are deduced. The singularity types of the Calabi-Yau 3-folds constructed in this work consist of $A$- and $D$-type singularities.

Extremal 1/2 Calabi-Yau 3-folds and six-dimensional F-theory applications

We discuss a method for classifying the singularity types of 1/2 Calabi-Yau 3-folds, a family of rational elliptic 3-folds introduced in a previous study in relation to various U(1) factors in 6D F-theory models. A projective dual pair of del Pezzo manifolds recently studied by Mukai is used to analyze the singularity types. In particular, we studied the maximal rank seven singularity types of 1/2 Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The structures of the singular fibers are analyzed using blow-ups. Double covers of the 1/2 Calabi-Yau 3-folds yield elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds and applications to six-dimensional $N = 1$ F-theory on the Calabi-Yau 3-folds are also discussed. The deduced singular fibers have applications in studying the gauge groups formed in 6D F-theory compactifications. The blow-up methods used to analyze the singular fibers and sections utilized in this research might have applications in studying the U(1) factors and hypermultiplets charged under U(1) in 6D F-theory.

$\frac{1}{2}$ Calabi-Yau 3-folds, Calabi-Yau 3-folds as double covers, and F-theory with U(1)s

In this study, we introduce a new class of rational elliptic 3-folds, which we refer to as "1/2 Calabi-Yau 3-folds". We construct elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds by utilizing these rational elliptic 3-folds. The construction yields a novel approach to build elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds of various Mordell-Weil ranks. Our construction of Calabi-Yau 3-folds can be considered as a three-dimensional generalization of the operation of gluing pairs of 1/2 K3 surfaces to yield elliptic K3 surfaces. From one to seven $U(1)$s form in six-dimensional $N=1$ F-theory on the constructed Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Seven tensor multiplets arise in these models.

$\frac{1}{2}$Calabi-Yau 4-folds and four-dimensional F-theory on Calabi-Yau 4-folds with U(1) factors

In this study, four-dimensional $N=1$ F-theory models with multiple U(1) gauge group factors are constructed. A class of rational elliptic 4-folds, which we call as "$\frac{1}{2}$Calabi-Yau 4-folds," is introduced, and we construct the elliptically fibered 4-folds by utilizing them. This yields a novel approach for building families of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds with positive Mordell-Weil ranks. The introduced $\frac{1}{2}$Calabi-Yau 4-folds possess the characteristic property wherein the sum of the ranks of the singularity type and the Mordell-Weil group is always equal to six. This interesting property enables us to construct the elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds of various positive Mordell-Weil ranks. From one to six U(1) factors form in four-dimensional F-theory on the resulting Calabi-Yau 4-folds. We also propose the geometric condition on the base 3-fold of the built Calabi-Yau 4-folds that allows four-dimensional F-theory models that have heterotic duals to be distinguished from those that do not.

F-theory models with $U(1)\times \mathbb{Z}_2,\, \mathbb{Z}_4$ and transitions in discrete gauge groups

We examine the proposal in the previous paper to resolve the puzzle in transitions in discrete gauge groups. We focus on a four-section geometry to test the proposal. We observed that a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge group enlarges and $U(1)$ also forms in F-theory along any bisection geometries locus in the four-section geometry built as the complete intersections of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^3$ fibered over any base. Furthermore, we demonstrate that giving vacuum expectation values to hypermultiplets breaks the enlarged $U(1)\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge group down to a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_4$ gauge group via Higgsing. We thus confirmed that the proposal in the previous paper is consistent when a four-section splits into a pair of bisections in the four-section geometry. This analysis may be useful for understanding the Higgsing processes occurring in the transitions in discrete gauge groups in six-dimensional F-theory models. We also discuss the construction of a family of six-dimensional F-theory models in which $U(1)\times\mathbb{Z}_4$ forms.

Unbroken $E_7\times E_7$ nongeometric heterotic strings, stable degenerations and enhanced gauge groups in F-theory duals

Eight-dimensional non-geometric heterotic strings with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{e}_8\mathfrak{e}_7$ were constructed by Malmendier and Morrison as heterotic duals of F-theory on K3 surfaces with $Λ^{1,1}\oplus E_8\oplus E_7$ lattice polarization. Clingher, Malmendier and Shaska extended these constructions to eight-dimensional non-geometric heterotic strings with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{e}_7\mathfrak{e}_7$ as heterotic duals of F-theory on $Λ^{1,1}\oplus E_7\oplus E_7$ lattice polarized K3 surfaces. In this study, we analyze the points in the moduli of non-geometric heterotic strings with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{e}_7\mathfrak{e}_7$, at which the non-Abelian gauge groups on the F-theory side are maximally enhanced. The gauge groups on the heterotic side do not allow for the perturbative interpretation at these points. We show that these theories can be described as deformations of the stable degenerations, as a result of coincident 7-branes on the F-theory side. From the heterotic viewpoint, this effect corresponds to the insertion of 5-branes. These effects can be used to understand nonperturbative aspects of nongeometric heterotic strings. Additionally, we build a family of elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds by fibering elliptic K3 surfaces, which belong to the F-theory side of the moduli of non-geometric heterotic strings with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{e}_7\mathfrak{e}_7$, over $\mathbb{P}^1$. We find that highly enhanced gauge symmetries arise on F-theory on the built elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds.

Discrete gauge groups in certain F-theory models in six dimensions

We construct six-dimensional (6D) F-theory models in which discrete $\mathbb{Z}_5, \mathbb{Z}_4, \mathbb{Z}_3,$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge symmetries arise. We demonstrate that a special family of "Fano 3-folds" is a useful tool for constructing the aforementioned models. The geometry of Fano 3-folds in the constructions of models can be useful for understanding discrete gauge symmetries in 6D F-theory compactifications. We argue that the constructions of the aforementioned models are applicable to Calabi-Yau genus-one fibrations over any base space, except models with a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_5$ gauge group. We construct 6D F-theory models with a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_5$ gauge group over the del Pezzo surfaces, as well as over $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ and $\mathbb{P}^2$. We also discuss some applications to four-dimensional F-theory models with discrete gauge symmetries.

Nongeometric heterotic strings and dual F-theory with enhanced gauge groups

Eight-dimensional nongeometric heterotic strings were constructed as duals of F-theory on $Λ^{1,1}\oplus E_8\oplus E_7$ lattice polarized K3 surfaces by Malmendier and Morrison. We study the structure of the moduli space of this construction. There are special points in this space at which the ranks of the non-Abelian gauge groups on the 7-branes in F-theory are enhanced to 18. We demonstrate that the enhanced rank-18 non-Abelian gauge groups arise as a consequence of the coincident 7-branes, which deform stable degenerations on the F-theory side. This observation suggests that the non-geometric heterotic strings include nonperturbative effects of the coincident 7-branes on the F-theory side. The gauge groups that arise at these special points in the moduli space do not allow for perturbative descriptions on the heterotic side. We also construct a family of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds by fibering K3 surfaces with enhanced singularities over $\mathbb{P}^1$. Highly enhanced gauge groups arise in F-theory compactifications on the resulting Calabi-Yau 3-folds.

$SU(n) \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ in F-theory on K3 surfaces without section as double covers of Halphen surfaces

We investigate F-theory models with a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge symmetry and $SU(n)$ gauge symmetries. We utilize a class of rational elliptic surfaces lacking a global section, known as Halphen surfaces of index 2, to yield genus-one fibered K3 surfaces with a bisection, but lacking a global section. We consider F-theory compactifications on these K3 surfaces times a K3 surface to build such models. We construct Halphen surfaces of index 2 with type $I_n$ fibers, and we take double covers of these surfaces to obtain K3 surfaces without a section with two type $I_n$ fibers, and K3 surfaces without a section with a type $I_{2n}$ fiber. We study these models to advance the understanding of gauge groups that form in F-theory compactifications on the moduli of bisection geometries. Our results also show that the Halphen surfaces of index 2 can have type $I_n$ fibers up to $I_9$. We construct an example of such a surface and determine the complex structure of the Jacobian of this surface. This allows us to precisely determine the non-Abelian gauge groups that arise in F-theory compactifications on genus-one fibered K3 surfaces obtained as double covers of this Halphen surface of index 2, with a type $I_9$ fiber times a K3 surface. We also determine the $U(1)$ gauge symmetries for compactifications when K3 surfaces as double covers of Halphen surfaces with type $I_9$ fiber are ramified over a smooth fiber.

F-theory models on K3 surfaces with various Mordell-Weil ranks -constructions that use quadratic base change of rational elliptic surfaces

We constructed several families of elliptic K3 surfaces with Mordell-Weil groups of ranks from 1 to 4. We studied F-theory compactifications on these elliptic K3 surfaces times a K3 surface. Gluing pairs of identical rational elliptic surfaces with nonzero Mordell-Weil ranks yields elliptic K3 surfaces, the Mordell-Weil groups of which have nonzero ranks. The sum of the ranks of the singularity type and the Mordell-Weil group of any rational elliptic surface with a global section is 8. By utilizing this property, families of rational elliptic surfaces with various nonzero Mordell-Weil ranks can be obtained by choosing appropriate singularity types. Gluing pairs of these rational elliptic surfaces yields families of elliptic K3 surfaces with various nonzero Mordell-Weil ranks. We also determined the global structures of the gauge groups that arise in F-theory compactifications on the resulting K3 surfaces times a K3 surface. $U(1)$ gauge fields arise in these compactifications.

Enhancements in F-theory models on moduli spaces of K3 surfaces with $ADE$ rank 17

We study the moduli of elliptic K3 surfaces with a section with the $ADE$ rank 17. While the Picard number of a generic K3 surface in such moduli space is 19, the Picard number is enhanced to 20 at special points in the moduli. K3 surfaces become attractive K3 surfaces at these points. Either of the following two situations occurs at such special points: i) the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic K3 surface is enhanced, or ii) the gauge symmetry is enhanced. The first case i) is related to the appearance of a $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. In this note, we construct the moduli of K3 surfaces with $ADE$ types $E_7 D_{10}$ and $A_{17}$. We determine some of the special points at which K3 surfaces become attractive in the moduli of K3 surfaces with $ADE$ types $E_7 D_{10}$ and $A_{17}$. We investigate the gauge symmetries in F-theory compactifications on attractive K3 surfaces which correspond to such special points in the moduli times a K3 surface. $U(1)$ gauge symmetry arises in some F-theory compactifications.

Gauge groups and matter spectra in F-theory compactifications on genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds without section - hypersurface and double cover constructions

We investigate gauge theories and matter contents in F-theory compactifications on families of genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds lacking a global section. To construct families of genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds that lack a global section, we consider two constructions: hypersurfaces in a product of projective spaces, and double covers of a product of projective spaces. We consider specific forms of defining equations for these genus-one fibrations, so that genus-one fibers possess complex multiplications of specific orders. These symmetries enable a detailed analysis of gauge theories. $E_6$, $E_7$, and $SU(5)$ gauge groups arise in some models. Discriminant components intersect with one another in the constructed models, and therefore, discriminant components contain matter curves. We deduce potential matter spectra and Yukawa couplings.
