Magnetic Field Dependence of the Spin Susceptibility on Conventional s-wave Superconductor LaRu$_4$P$_{12}$ Revealed by $^{31}$P-NMR and $^{139}$La-NMR

The magnetic field dependence of the spin part of Knight shift, which is proportional to the superconducting-state spin susceptibility, was investigated at two nuclear sites, $^{31}$P and $^{139}$La in a conventional s-wave superconductor LaRu$_4$P$_{12}$. After the analyses, we confirmed that the superconducting-state spin susceptibility is proportional to magnetic field, and connects to the normal-state spin susceptibility smoothly. This is a textbook example, when the superconductivity is broken with the orbital pair-breaking effect.

Multi-Task Adversarial Training Algorithm for Multi-Speaker Neural Text-to-Speech

We propose a novel training algorithm for a multi-speaker neural text-to-speech (TTS) model based on multi-task adversarial training. A conventional generative adversarial network (GAN)-based training algorithm significantly improves the quality of synthetic speech by reducing the statistical difference between natural and synthetic speech. However, the algorithm does not guarantee the generalization performance of the trained TTS model in synthesizing voices of unseen speakers who are not included in the training data. Our algorithm alternatively trains two deep neural networks: multi-task discriminator and multi-speaker neural TTS model (i.e., generator of GANs). The discriminator is trained not only to distinguish between natural and synthetic speech but also to verify the speaker of input speech is existent or non-existent (i.e., newly generated by interpolating seen speakers' embedding vectors). Meanwhile, the generator is trained to minimize the weighted sum of the speech reconstruction loss and adversarial loss for fooling the discriminator, which achieves high-quality multi-speaker TTS even if the target speaker is unseen. Experimental evaluation shows that our algorithm improves the quality of synthetic speech better than a conventional GANSpeech algorithm.

Magnetic Field Effect on s-wave Superconductor LaRu4P12 Studied by 31P-NMR

We have performed 31P-NMR measurements on the s-wave superconductor LaRu4P12 to investigate the magnetic field effect of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 on a conventional full-gap superconductor. With increasing magnetic field, the Hebel-Slichter peak immediately below Tc in 1=T1 was suppressed, and the magnetic field dependence of 1/T1 at 0.8 K, well below Tc, was proportional to H2. These behaviors can be fully understood by the orbital pair-breaking effect in a single-band s-wave superconductor

Intertube effects on one-dimensional correlated state of metallic single-wall carbon nanotubes probed by 13C NMR

The electronic states in isolated single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been considered as an ideal realization of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL). However, it remains unclear whether one-dimensional correlated states are realized under local environmental effects such as the formation of a bundle structure. Intertube effects originating from other adjacent SWCNTs within a bundle may drastically alter the one-dimensional correlated state. In order to test the validity of the TLL model in bundled SWCNTs, low-energy spin excitation is investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The NMR relaxation rate in bundled mixtures of metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs shows a power-law temperature dependence with a theoretically predicted exponent. This demonstrates that a TLL state with the same strength as that for effective Coulomb interactions is realized in a bundled sample, as in isolated SWCNTs. In bundled metallic SWCNTs, we found a power-law temperature dependence of the relaxation rate, but the magnitude of the relaxation rate is one order of magnitude smaller than that predicted by theory. Furthermore, we found an almost doubled magnitude of the Luttinger parameter. These results indicate suppressed spin excitations with reduced Coulomb interactions in bundled metallic SWCNTs, which are attributable to intertube interactions originating from adjacent metallic SWCNTs within a bundle. Our findings give direct evidence that bundling reduces the effective Coulomb interactions via intertube interactions within bundled metallic SWCNTs.

Observation of the intrinsic magnetic susceptibility of highly purified single-wall carbon nanotubes

We report the observation of the intrinsic magnetic susceptibility of highly purified SWCNT samples prepared by a combination of acid treatment and density gradient ultracentrifugation (DGU). We observed that the diamagnetic susceptibility of SWCNTs increases linearly with increasing nanotube diameter. We found that the magnetic susceptibility divided by the diameter is a universal function of the scaled temperature. Furthermore, the estimated magnetic susceptibilities of pure semiconducting and pure metallic SWCNT samples suggest that they respond differently to changes in carrier density, which is consistent with theory. These findings provide experimental verification of the theoretically predicted diameter, temperature, and metallicity dependence of the magnetic susceptibility.

Giant Seebeck coefficient in semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotube film

We found a giant Seebeck effect in semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films, which exhibited a performance comparable to that of commercial Bi2Te3 alloys. Carrier doping of semiconducting SWCNT films further improved the thermoelectric performance. These results were reproduced well by first-principles transport simulations based on a simple SWCNT junction model. These findings suggest strategies that pave the way for emerging printed, all-carbon, flexible thermoelectric devices.

Relationship between Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism in LaFe(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)O Revealed by $^{31}$P-NMR

We performed $^{31}$P-NMR measurements on LaFe(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)O to investigate the relationship between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ and the moment $μ_{\rm ord}$ are continuously suppressed with increasing P content $x$ and disappear at $x = 0.3$ where bulk superconductivity appears. At this superconducting $x = 0.3$, quantum critical AFM fluctuations are observed, indicative of the intimate relationship between superconductivity and low-energy AFM fluctuations associated with the quantum-critical point in LaFe(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)O. The relationship is similar to those observed in other isovalent-substitution systems, e.g., BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ and SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$, with the "122" structure. Moreover, the AFM order reappears with further P substitution ($x > 0.4$). The variation of the ground state with respect to the P substitution is considered to be linked to the change in the band character of Fe-3$d$ orbitals around the Fermi level.

Enhanced anisotropic spin fluctuations below tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition in LaFeAs(O_{1-x}F_x) probed by ^{75}As and ^{139}La NMR

$^{75}$As and $^{139}$La NMR results of LaFeAs(O$_{1-x}$F$_x$) ($x$=0, 0.025, and 0.04) were reported. Upon F-doping, the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition temperature $T_S$, antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_N$ and internal magnetic field $μ_0H_{\rm int}$ are gradually reduced for $x<0.04$. However, at $x=0.04$, $T_N$ is abruptly suppressed to be 30 K along with a tiny $μ_0H_{\rm int}$, which is distinct from the continuous disappearance of the ordered phases in the Ba122 systems of Ba(Fe,Co)$_2$As$_2$ and BaFe$_2$(As,P)$_2$. The anisotropy of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$, $(T_1)^{-1}_{H\parallel ab}/(T_1)^{-1}_{H\parallel c}$, in the paramagnetic phase of $x = 0$ and 0.025 is constant ($\sim 1.5$), but increases abruptly below $T_S$ due to the enhancement of $(T_1)^{-1}_{H\parallel ab}$ by the slowing down of magnetic fluctuations. This indicates that the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural distortion enhances the anisotropy in the spin space via magnetoelastic coupling and/or spin-orbit interaction.

^{59}Co-Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance studies on YCoGe --- Comparison between YCoGe and UCoGe ---

We have performed ^{59}Co-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on YCoGe, which is a reference compound of ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe, in order to investigate the magnetic properties at the Co site. Magnetic and superconducting transitions were not observed down to 0.3 K, but a conventional metallic behavior was found in YCoGe, although its crystal structure is similar to that of UCoGe. From the comparison between experimental results of two compounds, the ferromagnetism and superconductivity observed in UCoGe originate from the U-5f electrons.

Chemical Pressure and Physical Pressure in BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_{x})_2

Measurements of the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, under hydrostatic pressure via bulk AC susceptibility were carried out on several concentrations of phosphorous substitution in BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2. The pressure dependence of unsubstituted BaFe_2As_2, phosphorous concentration dependence of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2, as well as the pressure dependence of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 all point towards an identical maximum T_c of 31 K. This demonstrates that phosphorous substitution and physical pressure result in similar superconducting phase diagrams, and that phosphorous substitution does not induce substantial impurity scattering.

Stripe antiferromagnetic correlations in LaFeAsO1-xFx probed by 75As NMR

The anisotropy of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ of $^{75}$As was investigated in the iron-based superconductor LaFeAs(O$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$) ($x = 0.07, 0.11$ and 0.14) as well as LaFeAsO. While the temperature dependence of the normal-state $1/T_1T$ in the superconducting (SC) $x = 0.07$ is different from that in the SC $x = 0.11$, their anisotropy of $1/T_1$, $R \equiv (1/T_{1})_{H \parallel ab}/(1/T_{1})_{H \parallel c}$ in the normal state is almost the same ($\simeq$ 1.5). The observed anisotropy is ascribable to the presence of the local stripe correlations with $Q = (π, 0)$ or $(0, π)$. In contrast, $1/T_1$ is isotropic and $R$ is approximately 1 in the overdoped $x = 0.14$ sample, where superconductivity is almost suppressed. These results suggest that the presence of the local stripe correlations originating from the nesting between hole and electron Fermi surfaces is linked to high-$T_c$ superconductivity in iron pnictides.

^{31}P and ^{75}As NMR evidence for a residual density of states at zero energy in superconducting BaFe_2(As_{0.67}P_{0.33})_2

^{31}P and ^{75}As NMR measurements were performed in superconducting BaFe_2(As_{0.67}P_{0.33})_2 with T_c = 30 K. The nuclear-spin-lattice relaxation rate T_1^{-1} and the Knight shift in the normal state indicate the development of antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and T_1^{-1} in the superconducting (SC) state decreases without a coherence peak just below T_c, as observed in (Ba_{1-x}K_{x})Fe_2As_2. In contrast to other iron arsenide superconductors, the T_1^{-1} \propto T behavior is observed below 4K, indicating the presence of a residual density of states at zero energy. Our results suggest that strikingly different SC gaps appear in BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_{x})_2 despite a comparable T_c value, an analogous phase diagram, and similar Fermi surfaces to (Ba_{1-x}K_{x})Fe_2As_2.

Microscopic Coexistence of Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in Single-Crystal UCoGe

Unambiguous evidence for the microscopic coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in UCoGe ($T_{\rm Curie} \sim 2.5$ K and $T_{\rm SC}$ $\sim$ 0.6 K) is reported from $^{59}$Co nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). The $^{59}$Co-NQR signal below 1 K indicates ferromagnetism throughout the sample volume, while nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ in the ferromagnetic (FM) phase decreases below $T_{\rm SC}$ due to the opening of the superconducting(SC) gap. The SC state was found to be inhomogeneous, suggestive of a self-induced vortex state, potentially realizable in a FM superconductor. In addition, the $^{59}$Co-NQR spectrum around $T_{\rm Curie}$ show that the FM transition in UCoGe possesses a first-order character, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction that the low-temperature FM transition in itinerant magnets is generically of first-order.

Two-Dimensional Spin Dynamics in the Itinerant Ferromagnet LaCoPO Revealed by Magnetization and $^{31}$P-NMR Measurements

We have performed magnetization and $^{31}$P-NMR measurements on the itinerant ferromagnet LaCoPO (Curie temperature $T_{\rm Curie}\sim 44$ K) with a layered structure in order to investigate spin dynamics in the paramagnetic state. The linear scaling between the Knight shift $K$ at the P site and the bulk susceptibility $χ$ above $T_{\rm Curie}$ indicates that the P nucleus is suitable for investigating magnetic properties. The temperature and magnetic field dependences of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by the temperature $1/T_1T$ at the P site show characteristic features of itinerant ferromagnets, such as ZrZn$_2$ and Y(Co$_{1-x}$Al$_x$)$_2$. In addition, the relationship between $1/T_1T$ and $χ$ above $T_{\rm Curie}$ suggests that ferromagnetic fluctuations possess a two-dimensional (2D) characteristic. The present data show that LaCoPO is a unique ferromagnet, where the 2D fluctuations anticipated from the crystal structure are predominant down to almost $T_{\rm Curie}$.

Systematic ^{75}As NMR study of the dependence of low-lying excitations on F doping in the iron oxypnictide LaFeAs(O_{1-x}F_{x})

We report systematic $^{75}$As NMR studies on LaFeAs(O$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$) ($0\le x\le0.14$). At $x=0.04$ near the phase boundary, from resistivity, spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$, and NMR spectrum measurements, we found weak magnetic order at $T_N\simeq 30$ K. Antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations proved through $1/T_1$ are suppressed significantly with F-doping, and pseudogap behavior without pronounced AFM fluctuations is observed at $x=0.11$ where $T_c$ is maximum. This significant suppression of $1/T_1T$ upon F-doping while $T_c$ remains nearly unchanged suggests that low-energy AFM fluctuations probed with $^{75}$As NMR do not play a crucial role in the superconductivity.

To What Extent Iron-Pnictide New Superconductors Have Been Clarified: A Progress Report

In this review, the authors present a summary of experimental reports on newly discovered iron-based superconductors as they were known at the end of 2008. At the same time, this paper is intended to be useful for experimenters to know the current status of these superconductors. The authors introduce experimental results that reveal basic physical properties in the normal and superconducting states. The similarities and differences between iron-pnictide superconductors and other unconventional superconductors are also discussed.

Spin Dynamics in Iron-based Layered Superconductor (La_{0.87}Ca_{0.13})FePO Revealed by ^{31}P and ^{139}La NMR Studies

We report ^{31}P and ^{139}La NMR studies of (La_{0.87}Ca_{0.13})FePO, which is a family member of the recently discovered superconductor LaFeAs(O_{1-x}F_x). In the normal state, Knight shift and $1/T_1T$ show that a Fermi-liquid state with moderate ferromagnetic fluctuations emerges below 30K. From 1/T_1T of ^{31}P and ^{139}La, quasi-two dimensional electronic structure is suggested, in which the FeP layer is more conductive than the LaO layer. In the superconducting (SC) state, although a clear Meissner signal was observed, 1/T_1T increases below T_c, in contrast to a decrease of 1/T_1T due to the opening of a SC gap, suggesting that novel low-energy spin dynamics develop in the SC state.

Evolution from Itinerant Antiferromagnet to Unconventional Superconductor with Fluorine Doping in La(O_{1-x}F_{x})FeAs Revealed by ^{75}As and ^{139}La Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

We report experimental results of ^{75}As and ^{139}La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in the iron-based layered La(O_{1-x}F_{x})FeAs (x= 0.0, 0.04 and 0.11) system. In the undoped LaOFeAs, 1/T_1 of ^{139}La exhibits a distinct peak at T_N ~ 142 K below which the spectra become broadened due to the internal magnetic field attributed to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. In the 4% F-doped sample, 1/T_1T exhibits a Curie-Weiss temperature dependence down to 30 K, suggesting the development of AFM spin fluctuations with decreasing temperature. In the 11% F-doped sample, in contrast, pseudogap behavior is observed in 1/T_1T both at the ^{75}As and ^{139}La site with a gap value of ~172 K. The spin dynamics vary markedly with F doping, which is ascribed to the Fermi-surface structure. As for the superconducting properties for the 4% and 11% F-doped samples, 1/T_1 in both compounds does not exhibit a coherence peak just below T_c and follows a T^3 dependence at low temperatures, which suggests unconventional superconductivity with line-nodes. We discuss similarities and differences between La(O_{1-x}F_{x})FeAs and cuprates, and also discuss the relationship between spin dynamics and superconductivity on the basis of F doping dependence of T_c and 1/T_1.
