The semi-classical saddles in three-dimensional gravity via holography and mini-superspace approach

We determine the complex geometries dual to the semi-classical saddles in three-dimensional gravity with positive or negative cosmological constant. We examine the semi-classical saddles in Liouville field theory and interpret them in terms of gravity theory. For this, we describe the gravity theory by Chern Simons theory and classify the possible saddles based on homotopy group argument. We further realize the semi-classical saddles using the mini-superspace model of quantum gravity and explicitly determine the integral contour. In the case of positive cosmological constant, we recovered the geometry used for no-boundary proposal of Hartle and Hawking. In the case of negative cosmological constant, the geometry can be identified with Euclidean anti-de Sitter space attached with imaginary radius spheres. The geometry should be unphysical and several arguments on this issue are provided. Partial results were already presented in our earlier letter, and more detailed derivations and explanations on the results are given along with additional results. In particular, we reproduce the classical Liouville action from the Chern-Simons formulation of dual gravity theory.

Semi-classical saddles of three-dimensional gravity via holography

We find out the complex geometries corresponding to the semi-classical saddles of threedimensional quantum gravity by making use of the known results of dual conformal field theory (CFT), which is effectively given by Liouville field theory. We examine both the cases with positive and negative cosmological constants. We determine the set of semi-classical saddles to choose from the homotopy argument in the Chern-Simons formulation combined with CFT results and provide strong supports from the mini-superspace approach to the quantum gravity. For the case of positive cosmological constant, partial results were already obtained in our previous works, and they are consistent with the current ones. For the case of negative cosmological constant, we identify the geometry corresponding a semi-classical saddle with three-dimensional Euclidean anti-de Sitter space dressed with imaginary radius three-dimensional spheres. The geometry is generically unphysical, but we argue that the fact itself does not lead to any problems.

Dimensional Reduction of the $S^3$/WZW Duality

Recently proposed duality relates the critical level limit $\hat{k} \to -2$ of $SU(2)_{\hat{k}}$ WZW models to a classical three-dimensional Einstein gravity on a sphere. In this paper, we propose a dimensional reduced version of this duality. The gravity side is reduced to a Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity on $S^2$ with a non-standard boundary term, or a BF theory with $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry. At least in low temperature limit, these two-dimensional gravity theories completely capture the original three-dimensional gravity effect. The CFT side is reduced to a certain complex Liouville quantum mechanics (LQM) with $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry. Our proposal gives an interesting example of a holography without boundary. We also discuss a higher-spin generalization with $SU(N)$ gauge symmetry.

SVD Entanglement Entropy

In this paper, we introduce a new quantity called SVD entanglement entropy. This is a generalization of entanglement entropy in that it depends on two different states, as in pre- and post-selection processes. This SVD entanglement entropy takes non-negative real values and is bounded by the logarithm of the Hilbert space dimensions. The SVD entanglement entropy can be interpreted as the average number of Bell pairs distillable from intermediates states. We observe that the SVD entanglement entropy gets enhanced when the two states are in the different quantum phases in an explicit example of the transverse-field Ising model. Moreover, we calculate the R\'enyi SVD entropy in various field theories and examine holographic calculations using the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Complex saddles of Chern-Simons gravity and dS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence

We examine the black hole solutions of dS$_3$ gravity by applying the explicit dS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence. The gravity theory is described by Chern-Simons theory with complex gauge group SL$(2,\mathbb{C})$, and the complexified theory is known to have too many saddle points. We determine the set of "allowable geometry" from dual CFT correlators. Concretely, we classify the possible complex solutions corresponding to dS$_3$ black holes from Liouville two-point functions. We extend the analysis to Liouville multi-point functions and among others we study geometry corresponding to two linked Wilson loops on $S^3$ by the monodromy matrix of Liouville four-point function. Some parts of the results were presented in a previous letter but here they are explained in more details and extended in various ways. In particular, we generalize the results to the case with higher-spin gravity by focusing the effects of higher-spin charges.

Timelike entanglement entropy

We define a new complex-valued measure of information called the timelike entanglement entropy (EE) which in the boundary theory can be viewed as a Wick rotation that changes a spacelike boundary subregion to a timelike one. An explicit definition of the timelike EE in 2d field theories is provided followed by numerical computations which agree with the analytic continuation of the replica method for CFTs. We argue that timelike EE should be correctly interpreted as another measure previously considered, the pseudo entropy, which is the von Neumann entropy of a reduced transition matrix. Our results strongly imply that the imaginary part of the pseudo entropy describes an emergent time which generalizes the notion of an emergent space from quantum entanglement. For holographic systems we define the timelike EE as the total complex valued area of a particular stationary combination of both space and timelike extremal surfaces which are homologous to the boundary region. For the examples considered we find explicit matching of our optimization procedure and the careful implementation of the Wick rotation in the boundary CFT. We also make progress on higher dimensional generalizations and relations to holographic pseudo entropy in de Sitter space.

Complex saddles of three-dimensional de Sitter gravity via holography

We determine complex saddles of three-dimensional gravity with a positive cosmological constant by applying the recently proposed holography. It is sometimes useful to consider a complexified metric to study quantum gravity as in the case of the no-boundary proposal by Hartle and Hawking. However, there would be too many saddles for complexified gravity, and we should determine which saddles to take. We describe the gravity theory by three-dimensional SL$(2,\mathbb{C})$ Chern-Simons theory. At the leading order in the Newton constant, its holographic dual is given by Liouville theory with a large imaginary central charge. We examine geometry with a conical defect, called a de Sitter black hole, from a Liouville two-point function. We also consider geometry with two conical defects, whose saddles are determined by the monodromy matrix of Liouville four-point function. Utilizing Chern-Simons description, we extend the similar analysis to the case with higher-spin gravity.

Pseudo Entropy in dS/CFT and Time-like Entanglement Entropy

We study holographic entanglement entropy in dS/CFT and introduce time-like entanglement entropy in CFTs. Both of them take complex values in general and are related with each other via an analytical continuation. We argue that they are correctly understood as pseudo entropy. We find that the imaginary part of pseudo entropy implies an emergence of time in dS/CFT.

CFT duals of three-dimensional de Sitter gravity

We present a class of dS/CFT correspondence between two-dimensional CFTs and three-dimensional de Sitter spaces. We argue that such a CFT includes an SU$(2)$ WZW model in the critical level limit $k\to -2$, which corresponds to the classical gravity limit. We can generalize this dS/CFT by considering the SU$(N)$ WZW model in the critical level limit $k\to -N$, dual to the higher-spin gravity on a three-dimensional de Sitter space. We confirm that under this proposed duality the classical partition function in the gravity side can be reproduced from CFT calculations. We also point out a duality relation known in higher-spin holography provides further evidence. Moreover, we analyze two-point functions and entanglement entropy in our dS/CFT correspondence. Possible spectrum and quantum corrections in the gravity theory are discussed.

Holography in de Sitter Space via Chern-Simons Gauge Theory

In this paper we propose a holographic duality for classical gravity on a three-dimensional de Sitter space. We first show that a pair of SU$(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge theories reproduces the classical partition function of Einstein gravity on a Euclidean de Sitter space, namely $\mathbb{S}^3$, when we take the limit where the level $k$ approaches $-2$. This implies that the CFT dual of gravity on a de Sitter space at the leading semi-classical order is given by an SU$(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model in the large central charge limit $k\to -2$. We give another evidence for this in the light of known holography for coset CFTs. We also present a higher spin gravity extension of our duality.

Topological pseudo entropy

We introduce a pseudo entropy extension of topological entanglement entropy called topological pseudo entropy. Various examples of the topological pseudo entropies are examined in three-dimensional Chern-Simons gauge theory with Wilson loop insertions. Partition functions with knotted Wilson loops are directly related to topological pseudo (Rényi) entropies. We also show that the pseudo entropy in a certain setup is equivalent to the interface entropy in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), and leverage the equivalence to calculate the pseudo entropies in particular examples. Furthermore, we define a pseudo entropy extension of the left-right entanglement entropy in two-dimensional boundary CFTs and derive a universal formula for a pair of arbitrary boundary states. As a byproduct, we find that the topological interface entropy for rational CFTs has a contribution identical to the topological entanglement entropy on a torus.

Holographic Pseudo Entropy

We introduce a quantity, called pseudo entropy, as a generalization of entanglement entropy via post-selection. In the AdS/CFT correspondence, this quantity is dual to areas of minimal area surfaces in time-dependent Euclidean spaces which are asymptotically AdS. We study its basic properties and classifications in qubit systems. In specific examples, we provide a quantum information theoretic meaning of this new quantity as an averaged number of Bell pairs when the post-selection is performed. We also present properties of the pseudo entropy for random states. We then calculate the pseudo entropy in the presence of local operator excitations for both the two dimensional free massless scalar CFT and two dimensional holographic CFTs. We find a general property in CFTs that the pseudo entropy is highly reduced when the local operators get closer to the boundary of the subsystem. We also compute the holographic pseudo entropy for a Janus solution, dual to an exactly marginal perturbation of a two dimensional CFT and find its agreement with a perturbative calculation in the dual CFT. We show the linearity property holds for holographic states, where the holographic pseudo entropy coincides with a weak value of the area operator. Finally, we propose a mixed state generalization of pseudo entropy and give its gravity dual.
