Single-crystal structural phase diagram of stoichiometric bilayer nickelate La3Ni2O7 under hydrostatic pressure

The bilayer nickelate La3Ni2O7 has attracted intense interest following the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity under pressure, representing the first nickelate superconductor realized in bulk form. However, the crystal structure of the superconducting phase remains under active discussion, complicating efforts to establish its microscopic origin. Here we resolve these structural controversies by establishing a definitive pressure-temperature phase diagram, including the superconducting region of stoichiometric La3Ni2O7 single crystals under hydrostatic conditions using helium as the pressure-transmitting medium. At ambient pressure, La3Ni2O7 adopts a polar orthorhombic Am2m structure characterized by charge order between inequivalent Ni sites and NiO6 octahedral tilting. Upon compression, the system undergoes a direct transition from the charge-ordered Am2m phase to the tetragonal I4/mmm phase near 10 GPa, coinciding with the onset of bulk superconductivity. These results establish the intrinsic structural evolution of La3Ni2O7 and provide a structural framework for microscopic theories of nickelate superconductivity.

Spin reorientation in tetragonally distorted spinel oxide NiCo$_2$O$_4$ epitaxial films

We experimentally investigated the magnetic properties of NiCo$_2$O$_4$ epitaxial films known to be conductive oxides with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at room temperature. Both magneto-torque and magnetization measurements at various temperatures provide clear experimental evidence of the spin reorientation transition at which the MA changes from PMA to easy-cone magnetic anisotropy (ECMA) at a certain temperature ($T_{\rm{SR}}$). ECMA was commonly observed in films grown by pulsed laser deposition and reactive radio frequency magnetron sputtering, although $T_{\mathrm{SR}}$ is dependent on the growth method as well as the conditions. The cone angles measured from the $c$-axis increased successively at $T_{\mathrm{SR}}$ and approached a maximum of 45-50 degrees at the lowest measurement temperature of 5 K. Calculation with the cluster model suggests that the Ni$^{3+}$ ions occupying the $T_d$ site could be the origin of the ECMA. Both the magnetic properties and the results of the calculation based on the cluster model indicate that the ECMA is attributable to the cation anti-site distribution of Ni$^{3+}$, which is possibly formed during the growth process of the thin films.

Local polarization and valence distribution in LaNiO3/LaMnO3 heterostructures

The inside of the electrical double layer at perovskite oxide heterointerfaces is examined. Here, we report the local polarization and valence distribution in LaNiO$_3$/LaMnO$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$/LaNiO$_3$ bilayers on a SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrate. Simultaneous measurements of two aspects of the structure are realized by using Bayesian inference based on resonant- and nonresonant-surface X-ray diffraction data. The results show that the average Mn valences are Mn$^{3.12+}$ and Mn$^{3.19+}$ for the two samples. The intensity of their local electric field is $\sim$1~GV/m and the direction of the field points from LaMnO$_3$ to LaNiO$_3$.

Spin-Orbital Entangled Liquid State in the Copper Oxide Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$

Structure with orbital degeneracy is unstable toward spontaneous distortion. Such orbital correlation usually has a much higher energy scale than spins, and therefore, magnetic transition takes place at a much lower temperature, almost independently from orbital ordering. However, when the energy scales of orbitals and spins meet, there is a possibility of spin-orbital entanglement that would stabilize novel ground state such as spin-orbital liquid and random singlet state. Here we review on such a novel spin-orbital magnetism found in the hexagonal perovskite oxide Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$, which hosts a self-organized honeycomblike short-range order of a strong Jahn-Teller ion Cu$^{2+}$. Comprehensive structural and magnetic measurements have revealed that the system has neither magnetic nor Jahn-Teller transition down to the lowest temperatures, and Cu spins and orbitals retain the hexagonal symmetry and paramagnetic state. Various macroscopic and microscopic measurements all indicate that spins and orbitals remain fluctuating down to low temperatures without freezing, forming a spin-orbital entangled liquid state.

Quadrupole moments in chiral material DyFe3(BO3)4 observed by resonant x-ray diffraction

By means of circularly polarized x-ray beam at Dy L3 and Fe K absorption edges, the chiral structure of the electric quadrupole was investigated for a single crystal of DyFe3(BO3)4 in which both Dy and Fe ions are arranged in spiral manners. The integrated intensity of the resonant x- ray diffraction of space-group forbidden reflections 004 and 005 is interpreted within the electric dipole transitions from Dy 2p3 to 5d and Fe 1s to 4p, respectively. We have confirmed that the 2 handedness of the crystal observed at Dy L3 and Fe K edges is consistent with that observed at Dy M5 edge in the previous study. By analyzing the azimuth scans of the diffracted intensity, the electronic quadrupole moments of Dy 5d and Fe 4p are derived. The temperature profiles of the integrated intensity of 004 at the Dy L3 and the Fe K edges are similar to those of Dy-O and Fe-O bond lengths, while that at the Dy M5 edge does not. The results indicate that the helix chiral orientations of quadrupole moments due to Dy 5d and Fe 4p electrons are more strongly affected by the crystal fields than Dy 4f.

Interplay between Charge and Magnetic Ordering in YbPd

The pressure-temperature phase diagram of an intermediate-valence compound YbPd was revealed via simultaneous ac-calorimetry and electrical resistivity measurements. Two successive structural phase transition temperatures, $T_1$ = 125 K and $T_2$ = 110 K, are found to decrease with increasing pressure. The magnetic ordering transition at $T_{\rm N} ~sim$ 1.9 K decreases monotonically up to 1.7 GPa and disappears discontinuously at $P_{\rm c} sim$ 1.9 GPa, where the structural phase transition at $T_2$ is also suppressed. At $P_{\rm c}$, enhancement of the effective mass and residual resistivity are observed. Another probable magnetic phase transition, however, is found to take place at $T_{\rm ML} sim$0.3 K and smoothly varies even when crossing $P_{\rm c}$. Structural phase transitions at ambient pressure were also studied by a single crystal X-ray diffraction measurement. Below $T_2$, a tetragonal lattice distortion with doubling of the unit cell along the c-axis is observed, and thus there are two inequivalent Yb-sites below $P_{\rm c}$. These results indicate that one Yb-site, having larger valence configuration and thus smaller Kondo temperature, orders at $T_{\rm N}$. The other phase transition at $T_{\rm ML}$ seems to couple to the crystal structure for $T_2 < T < T_1$. YbPd is a unique system exhibiting magnetic orderings in metallic charge-ordered Yb systems.

Charge ordering in the intermediate valence magnet YbPd

An x-ray diffraction study reveals the charge ordering structure in an intermediate valence magnet YbPd with a CsCl-structure. The valence of the Yb ions forms an incommensurate structure, characterized by the wavevector (+-0.07 +-0.07 1/2) below 130 K. At 105 K, the incommensurate structure turns into a commensurate structure, characterized by the wavevector (0 0 1/2). Based on the resonant x-ray diffraction spectra of the superlattice reflections, the valences of the Yb ions below 105 K are found to be 3+ and 2.6+. The origin of the long wavelength modulation is discussed with the aid of an Ising model having the second nearest neighbor interaction.

Superparamagnetism induced by polar nanoregions in relaxor ferroelectric (1$-$$x$)BiFeO$_{3}$-$x$BaTiO$_{3}$

A new class of superparamagnetism was found in relaxor ferroelectric 2/3BiFeO$_{3}$-1/3BaTiO$_{3}$. The size of the magnetic particle, estimated from the superparamagnetic magnetization curve, coincides with the size of the polar nanoregion (PNR), which governs the relaxor ferroelectric property. This suggests that the magnetic domain is identical to the PNR. The temperature variations in the sizes of the magnetic domains and PNRs estimated by our neutron diffraction measurements support this picture. Since the same domain provides both electric and magnetic properties, strong coupling between the two properties through the domain size is expected.

Structural study on Pr0.55(Ca[1-y]Sr[y])0.45MnO3 thin films on perovskite (011) substrate

Structural study on the photo-switching system Pr{0.55}(Ca{1-y}Sr y){0.45}MnO3 thin films on perovskite (011) substrate has been made with synchrotron radiation diffraction experiment. The insulating phase of y=0.20 sample was found to be an antiferro-orbital ordered phase with large lattice distortion and the ferromagnetic metallic phase of y=0.40 film show no distinct lattice distortion from the paramagnetic phase, which are very similar with (Nd,Pr)0.5Sr0.5MnO3 films. A striking contrast of the orbital ordered phase of y=0.20 film to (Nd,Pr)0.5Sr0.5MnO3 films was its untwinned structure.

Charge Ordering in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 by synchrotron x-ray diffraction

The spatial charge arrangement of a typical quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 is revealed by single crystal structure analysis using synchrotron radiation. The results show that the horizontal stripe type structure, which was suggested by mean field theory, is established. We also find the charge disproportion above the metal-insulator transition temperature and a significant change in transfer integrals caused by the phase transition. Our result elucidates the insulating phase of this material as a 2k_F charge density localization.

Multipole tensor analysis of the resonant x-ray scattering by quadrupolar and magnetic order in DyB2C2

Resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) experiment has been performed for the (3 0 1.5) superlattice reflection in the antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic phase of DyB2C2. Azimuthal-angle dependence of the resonance enhanced intensities for both dipolar (E1) and quadrupolar (E2) resonant processes has been measured precisely with polarization analysis. Every scattering channel exhibits distinctive azimuthal dependence, differently from the symmetric reflection at (0 0 0.5) which was studied previously. We have analyzed the results using a theory developed by Lovesey et al., which directly connects atomic tensors with the cross-section of RXS. The fitting results indicate that the azimuthal dependences can be explained well by the atomic tensors up to rank 2. Rank 3 and rank 4 tensors are reflected in the data very little. In addition, The coupling scheme among the 4f quadrupolar moment, 5d ortitals, and the lattice has been determined from the interference among the Thomson scattering from the lattice distortion and the resonant scatterings of E1 and E2 processes. It has also been established from the RXS of the (3 0 1.5) reflection that the canting of the 4f quadrupolar moments exists up to T_Q. We also discuss a possible wavefunction of the ground state from the point-charge model calculation.

Resonant X-ray Study on the Bi-Layered Perovskite Mn Oxide LaSr2Mn2O7

Charge and orbital ordering behaviors in the half doped bi-layered compound LaSr2Mn2O7 have been studied by resonant and non-resonant X-ray scattering. Three different order parameters, which correspond to the A-type antiferromagnetic, a charge and an orbital ordered states, were observed by measuring the magnetostriction and the superlattice peaks characterized by wavevectors (1/2 1/2 0) and (1/4 1/4 0), respectively. The superlattice reflections indicating the charge and orbital ordered states were observed below 210 K. Both the intensities reach a maximum at 160 K on cooling and become very weak below 100 K. The peak width of the charge ordered state agrees with that of the orbital ordered state at all temperatures studied. These results indicate that both the states originate from a single phase and that the charge/orbital ordered islands with definite interfaces disperse in the A-type antiferromagnetic phase. The dimensionality of the charge/orbital ordered phase is discussed using this model.

Antiferro-quadrupole Ordering of CeB$_6$ Studied by Resonant X-ray Scattering

Under zero magnetic field, a quadrupolar order parameter at q_Q=(1/2,1/2,1/2) in a typical antiferro-quadrupole (AFQ) ordering compound CeB6 has been observed for the first time by means of a resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) te\ chnique. The RXS is observed at the 2p->5d dipole transition energy of the Ce L3-edge. Using this RXS technique to observe the pure order parameter of the AFQ state, the magnetic phase diagram of Phase II is first determined.
