High-harmonic generation in quantum spin systems

We theoretically study the high-harmonic generation (HHG) in one-dimensional spin systems. While in electronic systems the driving by AC electric fields produces radiation from the dynamics of excited charges, we consider here the situation where spin systems excited by a magnetic field pulse generate radiation via a time-dependent magnetization. Specifically, we study the magnetic dipole radiation in two types of ferromagnetic spin chain models, the Ising model with static longitudinal field and the XXZ model, and reveal the structure of the spin HHG and its relation to spin excitations. For weak laser amplitude, a peak structure appears which can be explained by time-dependent perturbation theory. With increasing amplitude, plateaus with well-defined cutoff energies emerge. In the Ising model with longitudinal field, the thresholds of the multiple plateaus in the radiation spectra can be explained by the annihilation of multiple magnons. In the XXZ model, which retains the $\mathbf{Z}_{2}$ symmetry, the laser magnetic field can induce a phase transition of the ground state when it exceeds a critical value, which results in a drastic change of the spin excitation character. As a consequence, the first cutoff energy in the HHG spectrum changes from a single-magnon to a two-magnon energy at this transition. Our results demonstrate the possibility of generating high-harmonic radiation from magnetically ordered materials and the usefulness of high-harmonic signals for extracting information on the spin excitation spectrum.

Nonequilibrium steady states of electric-field driven Mott insulators

We present a systematic study of the nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) in Mott insulators driven by DC or AC electric fields, based on the Floquet dynamical mean-field theory. The results are analyzed using a generalized tunneling formula for the current, which is reminiscent of the Meir-Wingreen formula and provides insights into the relevant physical processes. In the DC case, the spectrum of the NESSs exhibits Wannier-Stark (WS) states associated with the lower and upper Hubbard bands. In addition, there emerge WS sidebands from many-body states. Using the tunneling formula, we demonstrate that the tunneling between these WS states leads to peaks or humps in the induced DC current. In the AC case, we cover a wide parameter range of excitation frequencies and field strengths to clarify the crossover from field-induced tunneling behavior in the DC limit to nonequilibrium states dominated by multiphoton absorption in the AC limit. In the crossover regime, the single-particle spectrum is characterized by a coexistence of Floquet sidebands and WS peaks, and the current and double occupation exhibits a nontrivial dependence on the field strength. The tunneling formula works quantitatively well even in the AC case, and we use it to discuss the potential cooperation of tunneling and multi-photon processes in the crossover regime. The tunneling formula and its simplified versions also provide physical insights into the high-harmonic generation in Mott insulators.

High-Harmonic Generation in Mott Insulators

Using Floquet dynamical mean-field theory, we study the high-harmonic generation in the time-periodic steady states of wide-gap Mott insulators under AC driving. In the strong-field regime, the harmonic intensity exhibits multiple plateaus, whose cutoff energies $ε_{\rm cut} = U + mE_0$ scale with the Coulomb interaction $U$ and the maximum field strength $E_0$. In this regime, the created doublons and holons are localized because of the strong field and the $m$-th plateau originates from the recombination of $m$-th nearest-neighbor doublon-holon pairs. In the weak-field regime, there is only a single plateau in the intensity, which originates from the recombination of itinerant doublons and holons. Here, $ε_{\rm cut} = Δ_{\rm gap} + αE_0$, with $Δ_{\rm gap}$ the band gap and $α>1$. We demonstrate that the Mott insulator shows a stronger high-harmonic intensity than a semiconductor model with the same dispersion as the Mott insulator, even if the semiconductor bands are broadened by impurity scattering to mimic the incoherent scattering in the Mott insulator.

Enhanced pairing susceptibility in a photo-doped two-orbital Hubbard model

Local spin fluctuations provide the glue for orbital-singlet spin-triplet pairing in the doped Mott insulating regime of multi-orbital Hubbard models. At large Hubbard repulsion $U$, the pairing susceptibility is nevertheless very low, because the pairing interaction cannot overcome the suppression of charge fluctuations. Using nonequilibrium dynamical mean field simulations of the two-orbital Hubbard model, we show that out of equilibrium the pairing susceptibility in this large-$U$ regime can be strongly enhanced by creating a photo-induced population of the relevant charge states, and that this susceptibility correlates with the local spin susceptibility. Since a strong enhancement of the pairing requires a low kinetic energy of the charge carriers, the phenomenon is supported by the ultra-fast cooling of the photo-doped carriers through the creation of local spin excitations.

Nonthermal switching of charge order: dynamical slowing down and optimal control

We investigate the laser-induced dynamics of electronically driven charge-density-wave order. A comprehensive mean-field analysis of the attractive Hubbard model in the weak-coupling regime reveals ultrafast switching and ultrafast melting of the order via a nonthermal pathway. The resulting nonequilibrium phase diagram exhibits multiple dynamical phase transitions with increasing field strength. Using an intuitive pseudospin picture, we show that the laser can be regarded as a external (pseudo) magnetic field, and that the distinct dynamical regimes can be connected to the spin precession angle. We furthermore study the effects of electron-electron interactions beyond mean-field to show that the main features of the phase diagram are robust against scattering or thermalization processes. For example, the nonthermal state with switched order is characterized by a particularly slow relaxation. We also demonstrate how these nonthermal phases can be stabilized by tailoring the pulse shape with optimal control theory.

Floquet prethermalization in the resonantly driven Hubbard model

We demonstrate the existence of long-lived prethermalized states in the Mott insulating Hubbard model driven by periodic electric fields. These states, which also exist in the resonantly driven case with a large density of photo-induced doublons and holons, are characterized by a nonzero current and an effective temperature of the doublons and holons which depends sensitively on the driving condition. Focusing on the specific case of resonantly driven models whose effective time-independent Hamiltonian in the high-frequency driving limit corresponds to noninteracting fermions, we show that the time evolution of the double occupation can be reproduced by the effective Hamiltonian, and that the prethermalization plateaus at finite driving frequency are controlled by the next-to-leading order correction in the high-frequency expansion of the effective Hamiltonian. We propose a numerical procedure to determine an effective Hubbard interaction that mimics the correlation effects induced by these higher order terms.

Photo-induced enhancement of excitonic order

We study the dynamics of excitonic insulators coupled to phonons. Without phonon couplings, the linear response is given by the damped amplitude oscillations of the order parameter with frequency equal to the minimum band gap. A phonon coupling to the interband transfer integral induces two types of long-lived collective oscillations of the amplitude, one originating from the phonon dynamics and the other from the phase mode, which becomes massive. We show that even for small phonon coupling, a photo-induced enhancement of the exciton condensation and the gap can be realized. Using the Anderson pseudo-spin picture, we argue that the origin of the enhancement is a cooperative effect of the massive phase mode and the Hartree shift induced by the photo excitation. We also discuss how the enhancement of the order and the collective modes can be observed with time-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy.

Nonequilibrium steady states and transient dynamics of conventional superconductors under phonon driving

We perform a systematic analysis of the influence of phonon driving on the superconducting Holstein model coupled to heat baths by studying both the transient dynamics and the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) in the weak and strong electron-phonon coupling regimes. Our study is based on the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory, and for the NESS we present a Floquet formulation adapted to electron-phonon systems. The analysis of the phonon propagator suggests that the effective attractive interaction can be strongly enhanced in a parametric resonant regime because of the Floquet side bands of phonons. While this may be expected to enhance the superconductivity (SC), our fully self-consistent calculations, which include the effects of heating and nonthermal distributions, show that the parametric phonon driving generically results in a suppression or complete melting of the SC order. In the strong coupling regime, the NESS always shows a suppression of the SC gap, the SC order parameter and the superfluid density as a result of the driving, and this tendency is most prominent at the parametric resonance. Using the real-time nonequilibrium DMFT formalism, we also study the dynamics towards the NESS, which shows that the heating effect dominates the transient dynamics, and SC is weakened by the external modulations, in particular at the parametric resonance. In the weak coupling regime, we find that the SC fluctuations above the transition temperature are generally weakened under the driving. The strongest suppression occurs again around the parametric resonances because of the efficient energy absorption.

Multiple amplitude modes in strongly-coupled phonon-mediated superconductors

We study collective amplitude modes of the superconducting order parameter in strongly-coupled electron-phonon systems described by the Holstein model using the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory with the self-consistent Migdal approximation as an impurity solver. The frequency of the Higgs amplitude mode is found to coincide with the superconducting gap even in the strongly-coupled (beyond BCS) regime. Besides the Higgs mode, we unravel another collective mode involving the dynamics of both the phonons and the superconducting order parameter. The frequency of this mode, higher than twice the renormalized phonon frequency in the superconducting phase, is shown to reflect a strong electron-mediated phonon-phonon interaction. Both types of collective excitations contribute to time-resolved photoemission spectra after a strong laser pump as vertex corrections to produce resonance peaks, which allows one to distinguish them from quasiparticle excitations.

Nonlinear light-Higgs coupling in superconductors beyond BCS: Effects of the retarded phonon-mediated interaction

We study the contribution of the Higgs amplitude mode on the nonlinear optical response of superconductors beyond the BCS approximation by taking into account the retardation effect in the phonon-mediated attractive interaction. To evaluate the vertex correction in nonlinear optical susceptibilities that contains the effect of collective modes, we propose an efficient scheme which we call the "dotted DMFT" based on the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory (nonequilibrium DMFT) to go around the difficulty of solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation and analytical continuation. The vertex correction is represented by the derivative of the self-energy with respect to the external driving field, which is self-consistently determined by the differentiated ("dotted") DMFT equations. We apply the method to the Holstein model, a prototypical electron-phonon-coupled system, to calculate the susceptibility for the third-harmonic generation including the vertex correction. The results show that, in sharp contrast to the BCS theory, the Higgs mode can contribute to the third-harmonic generation for general polarization of the laser field with an order of magnitude comparable to the contribution from the pair breaking or charge density fluctuations. The physical origin is traced back to the nonlinear resonant light-Higgs coupling, which has been absent in the BCS approximation.

Supersolid Phase Accompanied by a Quantum Critical Point in the Intermediate Coupling Regime of the Holstein Model

We reveal that electron-phonon systems described by the Holstein model on a bipartite lattice exhibit, away from half filling, a supersolid (SS) phase characterized by coexisting charge order (CO) and superconductivity (SC), and an accompanying quantum critical point (QCP). The SS, demonstrated by the dynamical mean-field theory with a quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver, emerges in the intermediate-coupling regime, where the peak of the Tc dome is located and the metal-insulator crossover occurs. On the other hand, in the weak- and strong-coupling regimes the CO-SC boundary is of first order with no intervening SS phases. The QCP is associated with the continuous transition from SS to SC and characterized by a reentrant behavior of the SS around it. We further show that the SS-SC transition is hallmarked by diverging charge fluctuations and a kink (peak) in the superfluid density.

Interaction quench in the Holstein model: Thermalization crossover from electron- to phonon-dominated relaxation

We study the relaxation of the Holstein model after a sudden switch-on of the interaction by means of the nonequilibrium dynamical mean field theory, with the self-consistent Migdal approximation as an impurity solver. We show that there exists a qualitative change in the thermalization dynamics as the interaction is varied in the weak-coupling regime. On the weaker interaction side of this crossover, the phonon oscillations are damped more rapidly than the electron thermalization timescale, as determined from the relaxation of the electron momentum distribution function. On the stronger interaction side, the relaxation of the electrons becomes faster than the phonon damping. In this regime, despite long-lived phonon oscillations, a thermalized momentum distribution is realized temporarily. The origin of the thermalization crossover found here is traced back to different behaviors of the electron and phonon self-energies as a function of the electron-phonon coupling. In addition, the importance of the phonon dynamics is demonstrated by comparing the self-consistent Migdal results with those obtained with a simpler Hatree-Fock impurity solver that neglects the phonon self-energy. The latter scheme does not properly describe the evolution and thermalization of isolated electron-phonon systems.

Dynamical mean-field analysis of ordered phases in the half-filled Holstein-Hubbard model

We investigate ordered phases (s-wave superconducting (SC), antiferromagnetic (AF) and charge ordered (CO) phases) of the half-filled Holstein-Hubbard model using the dynamical mean-field theory in combination with a continuous time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver. We particularly focus on the parameter regime where the electron-electron Coulomb interaction and the phonon mediated retarded attractive interaction are both comparable to the bare electron bandwidth to understand the interplay of these interactions and the retardation effects due to finite phonon frequency ω_0. Results for the transition temperatures for SC and AF as a function of the effective interaction U_eff(=U-λwith U the Coulomb repulsion and λthe phonon-mediated attraction) show deviations from the the corresponding results in the anti-adiabatic limit. These are analyzed by comparing with an effective static model in the polaron picture. We also determine the phase diagram around U_eff=0 at low, but nonzero temperatures to show that paramagnetic phases appear between AF and CO when U and λare small or large, while AF and CO directly compete with each other at moderate U and λ.

Ordered phases in the Holstein-Hubbard model: Interplay of strong Coulomb interaction and electron-phonon coupling

We study the Holstein-Hubbard model at half filling to explore ordered phases including su- perconductivity (SC), antiferromagnetism (AF), and charge order (CO) in situations where the electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions are strong (~ electronic bandwidth). The model is solved in the dynamical mean-field approximation using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver. We determine the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and the SC order parameter and show that the phonon-induced retardation or the strong Coulomb interaction leads to a significant reduction and shift of the Tc dome if one interprets the system as having an effective static interaction Ueff given by the Hubbard U reduced by the phonon-mediated attraction in the static limit. This behavior is analyzed by comparison to an effective static model in the polaron representation with a reduced bandwidth. We also determine the finite-temperature phase diagram including AF and CO. In the moderate-coupling regime, there is a hysteretic region of AF and CO around Ueff = 0, while the two phases are separated by a paramagnetic metal in the weak-coupling regime and a paramagnetic insulator in the strong coupling regime.

Supersolid states in a spin system-phase diagram and collective excitations

Phases analogous to supersolids can be realized in spin systems. Here we obtain the phase diagram of a frustrated dimer spin-1/2 system on a square lattice and study the collective excitation spectra, focusing on the supersolid state (SS). In the phase diagram on a parameter space of the exchange interaction and magnetic field, we find, on top of the SS phase, a phase that has no counterpart in the Bose Hubbard model and this state becomes dominant at the region where the enhancement of SS occurs in the bose Hubbard model. We then investigate the excitation spectrum and spin- spin correlation, which can be detected by neutron scattering experiments. We obtain an analytic expression for the spin wave velocity, which agrees with hydrodynamic relations. The intensity of excitation modes in the spin-spin correlation function is calculated and their change in the supersolid and superfluid states is discussed.
