GUT inspired $SO(5) \times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification

$SO(5) \times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification model inspired by $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification is constructed in the Randall-Sundrum warped space. The 4D Higgs boson is identified with the Aharonov-Bohm phase in the fifth dimension. Fermion multiplets are introduced in the bulk in the spinor, vector and singlet representations of $SO(5)$ such that they are implemented in the spinor and vector representations of $SO(11)$. The mass spectrum of quarks and leptons in three generations is reproduced except for the down quark mass. The small neutrino masses are explained by the gauge-Higgs seesaw mechanism which takes the same form as in the inverse seesaw mechanism in grand unified theories in four dimensions.

Gauge-Higgs unification at $e^+ e^-$ linear colliders

In gauge-Higgs unification the 4D Higgs boson appears as a part of the fifth dimensional component of gauge potentials, namely as a fluctuation mode of the Aharonov-Bohm phase in the extra dimension. The $SO(5) \times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification gives nearly the same phenomenology as the standard model (SM) at low energies. It predicts KK excited states of photon, $Z $ boson, and $Z_R$ boson ($Z'$ bosons) around 7 - 8 TeV. Quarks and leptons couple to these $Z'$ bosons with large parity violation, which leads to distinct interference effects in $e^+ e^- \rightarrow μ^+ μ^-, q \, \bar q$ processes. At 250 GeV ILC with polarized electron beams, deviation from SM can be seen at the 3 - 5 sigma level even with 250 fb$^{-1}$ data, namely in the early stage of ILC. Signals become stronger at higher energies. Precision measurements of interference effects at electron-positron colliders at energies above 250 GeV become very important to explore physics beyond the standard model.

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Mass Spectra in Six-Dimensional Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

The mass spectra of the standard model particles are reproduced in the $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification in the six-dimensional warped space without introducing exotic light fermions. Light neutrino masses are explained by the gauge-Higgs seesaw mechanism. We evaluate the effective potential of the 4d Higgs boson appearing as a fluctuation mode of the Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ in the extra-dimensioal space, and show that the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking takes place with the Higgs boson mass $m_H \sim 125\,$GeV and $θ_H \sim 0.1$. The Kaluza-Klein mass scale in the fifth dimension is approximately given by $m_{\rm KK} \sim 1.230\,{\rm TeV}/\sin θ_H$.

Distinct signals of the gauge-Higgs unification in $e^+e^-$ collider experiments

Effects of Kaluza-Klein excited neutral vector bosons ($Z'$ bosons) in the gauge-Higgs unification on $e^+e^- \to \bar{q}q, \ell^+\ell^-$ cross sections are studied, particularly in future $e^+ e^-$ collider experiments with polarized beams. Significant deviations in the energy and polarization dependence in $σ(μ^+μ^-)$, the lepton forward-backward asymmetry, $R_b(μ) \equiv σ(\bar{b}b)/σ(μ^+μ^-)$ and the left-right asymmetry from the standard model are predicted.

Gauge-Higgs Seesaw Mechanism in Six-Dimensional Grand Unification

$SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification is formulated in the six-dimensional hybrid warped space in which the fifth and sixth dimensions play as the electroweak and grand-unification dimensions. Fermions are introduced in ${\bf 32}$, ${\bf 11}$ and ${\bf 1}$ of $SO(11)$. Small neutrino masses naturally emerge as a result of a new seesaw mechanism in the gauge-Higgs unification which is characterized by a $3 \times 3$ mass matrix.

New dimensions from gauge-Higgs unification

The Higgs boson is unified with gauge fields in the gauge-Higgs unification. The $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs electroweak unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space yields almost the same phenomenology at low energies as the standard model, and gives many predictions for the Higgs couplings and new $W', Z'$ bosons around $6 \sim 8$ TeV, which can be tested at 14 TeV LHC. The gauge-Higgs grand unification is achieved in $SO(11)$ gauge theory. It suggests the existence of the sixth dimension (GUT dimension) in addition to the fifth dimension (electroweak dimension). The proton decay is naturally suppressed in the gauge-Higgs grand unification.

Collider signals of $W'$ and $Z'$ bosons in the gauge-Higgs unification

In the $SO(5)\times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification (GHU), Kaluza-Klein (KK) excited states of charged and neutral vector bosons, $W^{(1)}$, $W_R^{(1)}$, $Z^{(1)}$, $γ^{(1)}$ and $Z_R^{(1)}$, can be observed as $W'$ and $Z'$ signals in collider experiments. In this paper we evaluate the decay rates of the $W'$ and $Z'$, and $s$-channel cross sections mediated by $W'$ and $Z'$ bosons with final states involving the standard model (SM) fermion pair ($\ell ν$, $\ell\bar{\ell}$, $q\bar{q}'$), $WH$, $ZH$, $WW$ and $WZ$. $W'$ and $Z'$ resonances appear around 6.0 TeV (8.5 TeV) for $θ_H=0.115$ (0.0737) where $θ_H$ is the Aharonov-Bohm phase in the fifth dimension in GHU. For decay rates we find $Γ(W'\to WH) \simeq Γ(W'\to WZ)$ ($W'=W^{(1)}$, $W_R^{(1)}$), $Γ(W^{(1)}\to WH,WZ) \simΓ(W_R^{(1)}\to WH,WZ)$, $Γ(Z^{(1)}\to ZH) \simeq\sum_{Z'=Z^{(1)},γ^{(1)}}Γ(Z'\to WW)$, and $Γ(Z_R^{(1)}\to ZH) \simeq Γ(Z_R^{(1)}\to WW)$. $W'$ and $Z'$ signals of GHU can be best found at the LHC experiment in the processes $pp\to W' (Z')+X$ followed by $W'\to t\bar{b}$, $WH$, and $Z'\to e^+ e^-$, $μ^+μ^-, ZH$. For the lighter $Z'$ ($θ_H = 0.115$) case, with forthcoming 30 fb$^{-1}$ data of the 13 TeV LHC experiment we expect about ten $μ^+μ^-$ events for the invariant mass range 3 to 7 TeV, though the number of the events becomes much smaller when $θ_H=0.0737$. In the process with $WZ$ in the final state, it is confirmed that the unitarity is preserved, provided that all KK excited intermediate states are taken into account. Deviation of the $WWZ$ coupling from the SM is very tiny. Exotic partners $t_T^{(1)}$ and $b_Y^{(1)}$ of the top and bottom quarks with electric charge $+5/3$ and $-4/3$ have mass $M_{t_T^{(1)},b_Y^{(1)}}\simeq 4-5$ TeV, becoming the lightest non-SM particles in GHU which can be singly produced in collider experiments.

$H\to Zγ$ in the gauge-Higgs unification

The decay rate of the Higgs decay $H \to Z γ$ is evaluated at the one-loop level in the $SO(5)\times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification. Although an infinite number of loops with Kaluza-Klein states contribute to the decay amplitude, there appears the cancellation among the loops, and the decay rate is found to be finite and non-zero. It is found that the decay rate is well approximated by the decay rate in the standard model multiplied by $\cos^2θ_H$, where $θ_H$ is the Aharonov-Bohm phase induced by the vacuum expectation value of an extra-dimensional component of the gauge field.

Gauge-Higgs EW and Grand Unification

4D Higgs field is identified with the extra-dimensional component of gauge potentials in the gauge-Higgs unification scenario. $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs EW unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space is successful at low energies. The Higgs field appears as an Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension. Its mass is generated at the quantum level and is finite. The model yields almost the same phenomenology as the standard model for $θ_H < 0.1$, and predicts $Z'$ bosons around 6 - 10 TeV with very broad widths. The scenario is genelarized to $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification. Fermions are introduced in the spinor and vector representations of $SO(11)$. Proton decay is naturally forbidden.

Toward Realistic Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

The $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space is presented. The 4D Higgs field is identified as the zero mode of the fifth dimensional component of the gauge potentials, or as the fluctuation mode of the Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ along the fifth dimension. Fermions are introduced in the bulk in the spinor and vector representations of $SO(11)$. $SO(11)$ is broken to $SO(4) \times SO(6)$ by the orbifold boundary conditions, which is broken to $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times SU(3)_C$ by a brane scalar. Evaluating the effective potential $V_{\rm eff} (θ_H)$, we show that the electroweak symmetry is dynamically broken to $U(1)_{\rm EM}$. The quark-lepton masses are generated by the Hosotani mechanism and brane interactions, with which the observed mass spectrum is reproduced. The proton decay is forbidden thanks to the new fermion number conservation. It is pointed out that there appear light exotic fermions. The Higgs boson mass is determined with the quark-lepton masses given, which, however, turns out smaller than the observed value.

Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

Gauge-Higgs grand unification is formulated. By extending $SO(5) \times U(1)_X$ gauge-Higgs electroweak unification, strong interactions are incorporated in $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space. Quarks and leptons are contained in spinor and vector multiplets of $SO(11)$. Although the KK scale can be as low as $10 $ TeV, proton decay is forbidden by a conserved fermion number in the absence of Majorana masses of neutrinos.

Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

$SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space is proposed. Orbifold boundary conditions and one brane scalar field reduce $SO(11)$ to the standard model symmetry, which is further broken to $SU(3)_C \times U(1)_{EM}$ by the Hosotani mechanism. In a minimal model quarks and leptons are contained in a multiplet in ${\bf 32}$ of $SO(11)$ in each generation. Proton decay is naturally suppressed by a conserved fermion number.

Dark matter in the $SO(5)\times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification

In the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification the lightest, neutral component of $n_F$ $SO(5)$-spinor fermions (dark fermions), which are relevant for having the observed unstable Higgs boson, becomes the dark matter of the universe. We show that the relic abundance of the dark matter determined by WMAP and Planck data is reproduced, below the bound placed by the direct detection experiment by LUX, by a model with one light and three heavier ($n_F=4$) dark fermions with the lightest one of a mass from 2.3$\,$TeV to 3.1$\,$TeV. The corresponding Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension ranges from 0.097 to 0.074. The case of $n_F=3$ ($n_F = 5, 6$) dark fermions yields the relic abundance smaller (larger) than the observed limit.

Polyakov loops and the Hosotani mechanism on the lattice

We explore the phase structure and symmetry breaking in four-dimensional SU(3) gauge theory with one spatial compact dimension on the lattice ($16^3 \times 4$ lattice) in the presence of fermions in the adjoint representation with periodic boundary conditions. We estimate numerically the density plots of the Polyakov loop eigenvalues phases, which reflect the location of minima of the effective potential in the Hosotani mechanism. We find strong indication that the four phases found on the lattice correspond to SU(3)-confined, SU(3)-deconfined, SU(2) x U(1), and U(1) x U(1) phases predicted by the one-loop perturbative calculation. The case with fermions in the fundamental representation with general boundary conditions, equivalent to the case of imaginary chemical potentials, is also found to support the $Z_3$ symmetry breaking in the effective potential analysis.

LHC signals of the $SO(5)\times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification

Signatures of the $SO(5)\times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification at LHC and future colliders are explored. The Kaluza-Klein (KK) mass spectra of $γ, Z, Z_R$ and the Higgs self-couplings obey universality relations with the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension. The current data at low energies and at LHC indicate $θ_H <0.2$. Couplings of quarks and leptons to KK gauge bosons are determined. Three neutral gauge bosons, the first KK modes $Z_R^{(1)}$, $Z^{(1)}$, and $γ^{(1)}$, appear as $Z'$ bosons in dilepton events at LHC. For $θ_H = 0.114$, the mass and decay width of $Z_R^{(1)}$, $Z^{(1)}$, and $γ^{(1)}$ are (5.73TeV, 482GeV), (6.07TeV, 342GeV), and (6.08TeV, 886GeV), respectively. For $θ_H = 0.073$ their masses are 8.00TeV$\sim$8.61TeV. An excess of events in the dilepton invariant mass should be observed in the $Z'$ search at the upgraded LHC at 14TeV.

Hosotani mechanism on the lattice

We explore the phase structure and symmetry breaking in four-dimensional SU(3) gauge theory with one spatial compact dimension on the lattice in the presence of fermions in the adjoint and fundamental representations with general boundary conditions. The eigenvalue phases of Polyakov loops and the associated susceptibility are measured on 16^3 x 4 lattice. We establish a correspondence between the phases found on the lattice and the gauge symmetry breaking by the Hosotani mechanism.

126 GeV Higgs boson and universality relations in the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification

The Higgs boson mass $m_H=126 $GeV in the $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification in the Randall-Sundrum space leads to important consequences. An universal relation is found between the Kaluza-Klein (KK) mass scale $m_{KK}$ and the Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension; $m_{KK} \sim 1350\,{\rm GeV}/(\sin θ_H)^{0.787}$. The cubic and quartic self-couplings of the Higgs boson become smaller than those in the SM, having universal dependence on $θ_H$. The decay rates $H \rightarrow γγ, gg$ are evaluated by summing contributions from KK towers. Corrections coming from KK excited states turn out very small. With $θ_H= 0.1 \sim 0.35$, the mass of the first KK $Z$ is predicted to be $2.5 \sim 6 \, $TeV.

Novel universality and Higgs decay H -> γγ, gg in the SO(5) x U(1) gauge-Higgs unification

The SO(5) x U(1) gauge-Higgs unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space with the Higgs boson mass m_H=126 GeV is constructed. An universal relation is found between the Kaluza-Klein (KK) mass scale $m_{KK}$ and the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension; $m_{KK} \sim 1350 GeV/(sin θ_H)^{0.787}$. The cubic and quartic self-couplings of the Higgs boson become smaller than those in the standard model (SM), having universal dependence on $θ_H$. The decay rates H -> γγ, gg are evaluated by summing contributions from KK towers. Corrections coming from KK excited states are finite and about 0.2% (2%) for $θ_H= 0.12 (0.36)$, branching fractions of various decay modes of the Higgs boson remaining nearly the same as in the SM. The signal strengths of the Higgs decay modes relative to the SM are $\sim cos^2 θ_H$. The mass of the first KK $Z$ is predicted to be $5.9 (2.4)$TeV for $θ_H= 0.12 (0.36)$. We also point out the possible enhancement of $Γ(H -> γγ)$ due to the large $U(1)_X$ charge of new fermion multiplets.
