ID Embedding as Subtle Features of Content and Structure for Multimodal Recommendation

Multimodal recommendation aims to model user and item representations comprehensively with the involvement of multimedia content for effective recommendations. Existing research has shown that it is beneficial for recommendation performance to combine (user- and item-) ID embeddings with multimodal salient features, indicating the value of IDs. However, there is a lack of a thorough analysis of the ID embeddings in terms of feature semantics in the literature. In this paper, we revisit the value of ID embeddings for multimodal recommendation and conduct a thorough study regarding its semantics, which we recognize as subtle features of \emph{content} and \emph{structure}. Based on our findings, we propose a novel recommendation model by incorporating ID embeddings to enhance the salient features of both content and structure. Specifically, we put forward a hierarchical attention mechanism to incorporate ID embeddings in modality fusing, coupled with contrastive learning, to enhance content representations. Meanwhile, we propose a lightweight graph convolution network for each modality to amalgamate neighborhood and ID embeddings for improving structural representations. Finally, the content and structure representations are combined to form the ultimate item embedding for recommendation. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets (Baby, Sports, and Clothing) demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art multimodal recommendation methods and the effectiveness of fine-grained ID embeddings. Dynamic temperature compensation for wavelength-stable entangled biphoton generation

A dynamic temperature compensation method is presented to stabilize the wavelength of the entangled biphoton source, which is generated via the spontaneous parametric down-conversion based on a MgO: PPLN waveguide. Utilizing the dispersive Fourier transformation technique combined with a digital proportional-integral-differential algorithm, the small amount of wavelength variation can be instantly identified and then compensated with active temperature correction. The long-term wavelength stability, assessed though Allan deviation, shows nearly a hundredfold enhancement, reaching 2.00*10^(-7) at the averaging time of 10000 s. It offers a simple, ready-to-use solution for precise wavelength control in quantum information processing.

Towards Unified Modeling for Positive and Negative Preferences in Sign-Aware Recommendation

Recently, sign-aware graph recommendation has drawn much attention as it will learn users' negative preferences besides positive ones from both positive and negative interactions (i.e., links in a graph) with items. To accommodate the different semantics of negative and positive links, existing works utilize two independent encoders to model users' positive and negative preferences, respectively. However, these approaches cannot learn the negative preferences from high-order heterogeneous interactions between users and items formed by multiple links with different signs, resulting in inaccurate and incomplete negative user preferences. To cope with these intractable issues, we propose a novel \textbf{L}ight \textbf{S}igned \textbf{G}raph Convolution Network specifically for \textbf{Rec}ommendation (\textbf{LSGRec}), which adopts a unified modeling approach to simultaneously model high-order users' positive and negative preferences on a signed user-item interaction graph. Specifically, for the negative preferences within high-order heterogeneous interactions, first-order negative preferences are captured by the negative links, while high-order negative preferences are propagated along positive edges. Then, recommendation results are generated based on positive preferences and optimized with negative ones. Finally, we train representations of users and items through different auxiliary tasks. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms existing baselines regarding performance and computational efficiency. Distinguishing $Λ$CDM from evolving dark energy with the future gravitational-wave space-borne detector DECIGO

The $Omh^2(z_i,z_j)$ two point diagnostics was proposed as a litmus test of $Λ$CDM model and measurements of cosmic expansion rate $H(z)$ have been extensively used to perform this test. The results obtained so far suggested a tension between observations and predictions of the $Λ$CDM model. However, the dataset of $H(z)$ direct measurements from cosmic chronometers and BAO was quite limited. This motivated us to study the performance of this test on a larger sample obtained in an alternative way. In this Letter, we propose that gravitational wave (GW) standard sirens could provide large samples of $H(z)$ measurements in the redshift range of $0<z<5$, based on the measurements of dipole anisotropy of luminosity distance arising from the matter inhomogeneities of large-scale structure and the local motion of observer. We discuss the effectiveness of our method in the context of the future generation space-borne DECi-herz Interferometer Gravitaional-wave Observatory (DECIGO), based on a comprehensive $H(z)$ simulated data set from binary neutron star merger systems. Our result indicate that in the GW domain, the $Omh^2(z_i,z_j)$ two point diagnostics could effectively distinguish whether $Λ$CDM is the best description of our Universe. We also discuss the potential of our methodology in determining possible evidence for dark energy evolution, focusing on its performance on the constant and redshift-dependent dark energy equation of state.

Hubble constant from the cluster-lensed quasar system SDSS J1004+4112: investigation of the lens model dependence

As a fundamental parameter for modern cosmology, the Hubble constant $H_0$ is experiencing a serious crisis. In this paper, we explore an independent approach to measure $H_0$ based on the time-delay cosmography with strong gravitational lensing of a quasar by a galaxy cluster. Specifically we focus on the strong lensing system SDSS J1004+4112 with the maximum image separation of 14.62$''$, the first system of a quasar lensed by a galaxy cluster with five multiple images. Incorporating the latest time-delay measurements, we investigate the lens model dependence from the combination of 16 different lens mass models. We find that the lens model dependence is indeed large, with the combined measurement of the Hubble constant of $H_0=67.5^{+14.5}_{-8.9}km/s/Mpc$ that is obtained by summing posteriors of the Hubble constant from the 16 models with equal weighting. Interestingly, our results show that the value of Hubble constant decreases as the complexity of the perturbation around the lens increases, although weighting based on positional errors of quasar images does not significantly improve the $H_0$ constraint. We find that the 16 different mass models predict largely different shapes of the lensed quasar host galaxy as well as other lensed galaxies behind the cluster. By selecting two mass models that best reproduces those shapes, the constraint on the Hubble constant is significantly tightened to $H_0=59.1^{+3.6}_{-3.5}km/s/Mpc$. While we caution that our analysis still does not fully explore all the possible mass model uncertainty, our results highlight the importance of including as many constraints as possible such as extended shapes of lensed galaxies for obtaining tight constraints on the Hubble constant from cluster-lensed quasar lens systems.

Video and Audio are Images: A Cross-Modal Mixer for Original Data on Video-Audio Retrieval

Cross-modal retrieval has become popular in recent years, particularly with the rise of multimedia. Generally, the information from each modality exhibits distinct representations and semantic information, which makes feature tends to be in separate latent spaces encoded with dual-tower architecture and makes it difficult to establish semantic relationships between modalities, resulting in poor retrieval performance. To address this issue, we propose a novel framework for cross-modal retrieval which consists of a cross-modal mixer, a masked autoencoder for pre-training, and a cross-modal retriever for downstream tasks. In specific, we first adopt cross-modal mixer and mask modeling to fuse the original modality and eliminate redundancy. Then, an encoder-decoder architecture is applied to achieve a fuse-then-separate task in the pre-training phase. We feed masked fused representations into the encoder and reconstruct them with the decoder, ultimately separating the original data of two modalities. In downstream tasks, we use the pre-trained encoder to build the cross-modal retrieval method. Extensive experiments on 2 real-world datasets show that our approach outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods in video-audio matching tasks, improving retrieval accuracy by up to 2 times. Furthermore, we prove our model performance by transferring it to other downstream tasks as a universal model.

Quantum two-way time transfer over a 103 km urban fiber

As a new approach to realizing high-precision time synchronization between remote time scales, quantum two-way time transfer via laboratory fiber link has shown significant enhancement of the transfer stability to several tens of femtoseconds. To verify its great potential in practical systems, the field test in long-haul installed fiber optic infrastructure is required to be demonstrated. In this paper, we implement the two-way quantum time transfer over a 103 km urban fiber link. A time transfer stability of 3.67 ps at 10 s and 0.28 ps at 40000 s has been achieved, despite the large attenuation of 38 dB leading to fewer than 40 correlated events per second. This achievement marks the first successful step of quantum two-way time transfer in the task of high-precision long-distance field transfer systems.

Evaluating robustness of support vector machines with the Lagrangian dual approach

Adversarial examples bring a considerable security threat to support vector machines (SVMs), especially those used in safety-critical applications. Thus, robustness verification is an essential issue for SVMs, which can provide provable robustness against various kinds of adversary attacks. The evaluation results obtained through the robustness verification can provide a safe guarantee for the use of SVMs. The existing verification method does not often perform well in verifying SVMs with nonlinear kernels. To this end, we propose a method to improve the verification performance for SVMs with nonlinear kernels. We first formalize the adversarial robustness evaluation of SVMs as an optimization problem. Then a lower bound of the original problem is obtained by solving the Lagrangian dual problem of the original problem. Finally, the adversarial robustness of SVMs is evaluated concerning the lower bound. We evaluate the adversarial robustness of SVMs with linear and nonlinear kernels on the MNIST and Fashion-MNIST datasets. The experimental results show that the percentage of provable robustness obtained by our method on the test set is better than that of the state-of-the-art.

Measuring the speed of light with updated Hubble diagram of high-redshift standard candles

The possible time variation of the fundamental constants of nature has been an active subject of research in modern physics. In this paper, we propose a new method to investigate such possible time variation of the speed of light $c$ using the updated Hubble diagram of high-redshift standard candles including Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) and high-redshift quasars (based on UV-X relation). Our findings show that the SNe Ia Pantheon sample, combined with currently available sample of cosmic chronometers, would produce robust constraints on the speed of light at the level of $c/c_0=1.03\pm0.03$. For the Hubble diagram of UV+X ray quasars acting as a new type of standard candles, we obtain $c/c_0=1.19\pm0.07$. Therefore, our results confirm that there is no strong evidence for the deviation from the constant speed of light up to $z\sim 2$. Moreover, we discuss how our technique might be improved at much higher redshifts ($z\sim5$), focusing on future measurements of the acceleration parameter $X(z)$ with gravitational waves (GWs) from binary neutron star mergers. In particular, in the framework of the second-generation space-based GW detector, DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO), the speed of light is expected to be constrained with the precision of $Δ{c}/c=10^{-3}$.

Quantum two-way time transfer over a hybrid free-space and fiber link

As the superiority of quantum two-way time transfer (Q-TWTT) has been proved convincingly over fiber links, its implementation on free-space links becomes an urgent need for remote time transfer expanding to the transcontinental distance. In this paper, the first Q-TWTT experimental demonstration over a hybrid link of 2 km-long turbulent free space and 7 km-long field fiber is reported. Despite the significant loss of more than 25 dB and atmospheric turbulence, reliable time transfer performance lasting for overnights has been realized with time stability in terms of time deviation far below 1 picosecond. This achievement shows the good feasibility of quantum-enhanced time transfer in the space-ground integrated optical links and nicely certifies the capability of Q-TWTT in comparing and synchronizing the state-of-the-art space microwave atomic clocks.

Revising the Hubble constant, spatial curvature and dark energy dynamics with the latest observations of quasars

In this paper, we use a newly compiled sample of ultra-compact structure in radio quasars and strong gravitational lensing systems with quasars acting as background sources to constrain six spatially flat and non-flat cosmological models ($Λ$CDM, PEDE and DGP). These two sets of quasar data (the time-delay measurements of six strong lensing systems and 120 intermediate-luminosity quasars calibrated as standard rulers) could break the degeneracy between cosmological parameters ($H_0$, $Ω_m$ and $Ω_k$) and therefore provide more stringent cosmological constraints for the six cosmological models we study. A joint analysis of the quasar sample provides model-independent estimations of the Hubble constant $H_0$, which is strongly consistent with that derived from the local distance ladder by SH0ES collaboration in the $Λ$CDM and PEDE model. However, in the framework of a DGP cosmology (especially for the flat universe), the measured Hubble constant is in good agreement with that derived from the the recent Planck 2018 results. In addition, our results show that zero spatial curvature is supported by the current lensed and unlensed quasar observations and there is no significant deviation from a flat universe. For most of cosmological model we study (the flat $Λ$CDM, non-flat $Λ$CDM, flat PEDE, and non-flat PEDE models), the derived matter density parameter is completely consistent with $Ω_m\sim 0.30$ in all the data sets, as expected by the latest cosmological observations. Finally, according to the the statistical criteria DIC, although the joint constraints provide substantial observational support to the flat PEDE model, they do not rule out dark energy being a cosmological constant and non-flat spatial hypersurfaces.

Revisiting Chaplygin gas cosmologies with the recent observations of high-redshfit quasars

In this paper, we use the latest observations of quasars covering the redshift range of $0.04<z<5.1$ to investigate a series of Chaplygin gas models as candidates for unified dark matter and dark energy. Based on different combinations of available standard candle and standard ruler data, we put constraints on the generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG), modified Chaplygin gas (MCG), new generalized Chaplygin gas (NGCG) and viscous generalized Chaplygin gas (VGCG) models. Moreover, we apply Jensen-Shannon divergence (JSD), statefinder diagnostics, and the deviance information criterion (DIC) to distinguish these CG models, based on the statistical results derived from Markov chain Monte Carlo method. The results show that (1) The standard ruler data could provide more stringent constraints on the cosmological parameters of different CG models considered in this analysis. Interestingly, the matter density parameter $Ω_{m}$ and Hubble constant $H_{0}$ derived from the available data are well consistent with those from the Planck 2018 results; (2) Based on the statistical criteria JSD, our findings demonstrate the well consistency between Chaplygin gas and the concordance $Λ$CDM model. However, in the framework of statefinder diagnostics, the GCG and NGCG models cannot be distinguished from $Λ$CDM, while MCG and VGCG models show significant deviation from $Λ$CDM in the present epoch; (3) According to the the statistical criteria DIC, we show that the MCG and VGCG models have substantial observational support from high-redshfit quasars, whereas the GCG and NGCG models miss out on the less observational support category but can not be ruled out.

Multiple measurements of gravitational waves acting as standard probes: model-independent constraints on the cosmic curvature with DECIGO

Although the spatial curvature has been precisely determined via the cosmic microwave background (CMB) observation by Planck satellite, it still suffers from the well-known cosmic curvature tension. As a standard siren, gravitational waves (GWs) from binary neutron star mergers provide a direct way to measure the luminosity distance. In addition, the accelerating expansion of the universe may cause an additional phase shift in the gravitational waveform, which allows us to measure the acceleration parameter. This measurement provides an important opportunity to determine the curvature parameter $Ω_k$ in the GW domain based on the combination of two different observables for the same objects at high redshifts. In this study, we investigate how such an idea could be implemented with future generation of space-based DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO) in the framework of two model-independent methods. Our results show that DECIGO could provide a reliable and stringent constraint on the cosmic curvature at a precision of $ΔΩ_k$=0.12, which is comparable to existing results based on different electromagnetic data. Our constraints are more stringent than the traditional electromagnetic method from the Pantheon SNe Ia sample, which shows no evidence for the deviation from the flat universe at $z\sim 2.3$. More importantly, with our model-independent method, such a second-generation space-based GW detector would also be able to explore the possible evolution $Ω_k$ with redshifts, through direct measurements of cosmic curvature at different redshifts ($z\sim 5$). Such a model-independent $Ω_k$ reconstruction to the distance past can become a milestone in gravitational-wave cosmology.

Implementation of field two-way quantum synchronization of distant clocks across a 7 km deployed fiber link

The two-way quantum clock synchronization has been shown not only providing femtosecond-level synchronization capability but also security against symmetric delay attacks, thus becoming a prospective method to compare and synchronize distant clocks with both enhanced precision and security. In this letter, a field test of two-way quantum synchronization between a H-maser and a Rb clock linked by a 7 km-long deployed fiber was implemented. Limited by the frequency stability of the Rb clock, the achieved time stability at 30 s was measured as 32 ps. By applying a fiber-optic microwave frequency transfer technology, the stability was improved by more than one-magnitude to 1.9 ps, even though the number of acquired photon pairs was only 1440 in 30 s due to the low sampling rate of the utilized coincidence measurement system. Such implementation demonstrates the high practicability of two-way quantum clock synchronization method for promoting the field applications.

DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory: Forecast constraints on the cosmic curvature with LSST strong lenses

In this paper, we aim at using the DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO), a future Japanese space gravitational-wave antenna sensitive to frequency range between LISA and ground-based detectors, to provide gravitational-wave constraints on the cosmic curvature at $z\sim 5$. In the framework of the well-known distance sum rule, the perfect redshift coverage of the standard sirens observed by DECIGO, compared with lensing observations including the source and lens from LSST, makes such cosmological-model-independent test more natural and general. Focusing on three kinds of spherically symmetric mass distributions for the lensing galaxies, we find that the cosmic curvature is expected to be constrained with the precision of $ΔΩ_K \sim 10^{-2}$ in the early universe ($z\sim5.0$), improving the sensitivity of ET constraints by about a factor of 10. However, in order to investigate this further, the mass density profiles of early-type galaxies should be properly taken into account. Specially, our analysis demonstrates the strong degeneracy between the spatial curvature and the lens parameters, especially the redshift evolution of power-law lens index parameter. When the extended power law mass density profile is assumed, the weakest constraint on the cosmic curvature can be obtained. Whereas, the addition of DECIGO to the combination of LSST+DECIGO does improve the constraint on the luminosity density slope and the anisotropy of the stellar velocity dispersion significantly. Therefore, our paper highlights the benefits of synergies between DECIGO and LSST in constraining new physics beyond the standard model, which could manifest itself through accurate determination of the cosmic curvature.

Demonstration of 50 km Fiber-optic two-way quantum time transfer at femtosecond-scale precision

The two-way quantum time transfer method has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated for its potential enhancements in precision and better guarantee of security. To further testify its advantage in practical applications, the applicable direct transmission distance as well as the achievable synchronization precision between independent time scales is of great interest. In this paper, an experiment on two-way quantum time transfer has been carried out over a 50 km long fiber link. With the common clock reference, a short-term stability of 2.6 ps at an averaging time of 7 s and a long-term stability of 54.6 fs at 57300 s were obtained. With independent clock references, assisted by microwave frequency transfer technology, the achieved synchronization showed almost equal performance and reached a stability of 89.5 fs at 57300 s. Furthermore, the spectral consistency of the utilized entangled photon pair sources has been studied concerning its effect on the transfer accuracy and long-term stability. The results obtained have promised a bright future of the two-way quantum time transfer for realizing high-precision time synchronization on metropolitan area fiber links.

Consistency testing for invariance of the speed of light at different redshifts: the newest results from strong lensing and type Ia supernovae observations

The invariance of the speed of light in the distant universe has profound significance for fundamental physics. In this paper, we propose a new model-independent method to test the invariance of the speed of light $c$ at different redshifts by combining the strong gravitational lensing (SGL) systems and the observations of type-Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). All the quantities used to test the deviation of $c$ come from the direct observations, and the absolute magnitudes of SNe Ia need not to be calibrated. Our results show that the speed of light in the distant universe is no obvious deviation from the constant value $c_0$ within the uncertainty based on current observations. Moreover, we conclude that the currently compiled SGL and SNe Ia Pantheon samples may achieve much higher precision $Δc/c\sim10^{-2}$ for the deviation of $c$ than all previously considered approaches. The forthcoming data from the Legacy Survey of Space and Time and Wide-Field InfraRed Space Telescope will achieve more stringent testing for deviation of the SOL (at the level of $Δc/c \sim10^{-3}$) by using our model-independent method. Finally, we discuss the potential ways in which our technique might be improved, focusing on the treatment of possible sources of systematic uncertainties.

Implementation of quantum synchronization over a 20-km fiber distance based on frequency-correlated photon pairs and HOM interference

The quantum synchronization based on frequency-correlated photon pairs and HOM interference has shown femtosecond-level precision and great application prospect in numerous fields depending on high-precision timefrequency signals. Due to the difficulty of achieving stable HOM interference fringe after long-distance fiber transmission, this quantum synchronization is hampered from long-haul field application. Utilizing segmented fibers instead of a single long-length fiber, we successfully achieved the stable observation of the two-photon interference of the lab-developed broadband frequency-correlated photon pairs after 20 km-long fiber transmission, without employing auxiliary phase stabilization method. Referenced to this interference fringe, the balance of the two fiber arms is successfully achieved with a long-term stability of 20 fs. The HOM-interference-based synchronization over a 20-km fiber link is thus demonstrated and a minimum stability of 74 fs has been reached at 48,000 s. This result not only provides a simple way to stabilize the fiber-optic two-photon interferometer for long-distance quantum communication systems, but also makes a great stride forward in extending the quantum-interference-based synchronization scheme to the long-haul field applications.
