The clustering of the SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey DR14 LRG sample: structure growth rate measurement from the anisotropic LRG correlation function in the redshift range 0.6 < z < 1.0

We analyze the anisotropic clustering of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-IV Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Luminous Red Galaxy Data Release 14 (DR14) sample combined with Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) CMASS sample of galaxies in the redshift range 0.6$<z<$1.0, which consists of 80,118 galaxies from eBOSS and 46,439 galaxies from the BOSS-CMASS sample. The eBOSS-CMASS Luminous Red Galaxy sample has a sky coverage of 1,844 deg$^2$, with an effective volume of 0.9 Gpc$^3$. The analysis was made in configuration space using a Legendre multipole expansion. The Redshift Space Distortion signal is modeled as a combination of the Convolution Lagrangian Perturbation Model and the Gaussian Streaming Model. We constrain the logarithmic growth of structure times the amplitude of dark matter density fluctuations, $f (z_{\rm eff})σ_8(z_{\rm eff})=0.454 \pm0.139 $, and the Alcock-Paczynski dilation scales which constraints the angular diameter distance $D_A(z_{eff})=1466.5 \pm 136.6 (r_s/r_s^{\rm fid})$ and $H(z_{\rm eff})=105.8 \pm 16 (r_s^{\rm fid}/r_s) \mathrm{km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$, where $r_s$ is the sound horizon at the end of the baryon drag epoch and $r_s^{\rm fid}$ is its value in the fiducial cosmology at an effective redshift $z_{\rm eff}=0.72$. These results are in full agreement with the current $Λ$-Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$-CDM) cosmological model inferred from Planck measurements. This study is the first eBOSS LRG full-shape analysis i.e. including Redshift-Space Distortions (RSD) simultaneously with the Alcock-Paczynski (AP) effect and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale.

ABSent: Cross-Lingual Sentence Representation Mapping with Bidirectional GANs

A number of cross-lingual transfer learning approaches based on neural networks have been proposed for the case when large amounts of parallel text are at our disposal. However, in many real-world settings, the size of parallel annotated training data is restricted. Additionally, prior cross-lingual mapping research has mainly focused on the word level. This raises the question of whether such techniques can also be applied to effortlessly obtain cross-lingually aligned sentence representations. To this end, we propose an Adversarial Bi-directional Sentence Embedding Mapping (ABSent) framework, which learns mappings of cross-lingual sentence representations from limited quantities of parallel data.

Bayes-Factor-VAE: Hierarchical Bayesian Deep Auto-Encoder Models for Factor Disentanglement

We propose a family of novel hierarchical Bayesian deep auto-encoder models capable of identifying disentangled factors of variability in data. While many recent attempts at factor disentanglement have focused on sophisticated learning objectives within the VAE framework, their choice of a standard normal as the latent factor prior is both suboptimal and detrimental to performance. Our key observation is that the disentangled latent variables responsible for major sources of variability, the relevant factors, can be more appropriately modeled using long-tail distributions. The typical Gaussian priors are, on the other hand, better suited for modeling of nuisance factors. Motivated by this, we extend the VAE to a hierarchical Bayesian model by introducing hyper-priors on the variances of Gaussian latent priors, mimicking an infinite mixture, while maintaining tractable learning and inference of the traditional VAEs. This analysis signifies the importance of partitioning and treating in a different manner the latent dimensions corresponding to relevant factors and nuisances. Our proposed models, dubbed Bayes-Factor-VAEs, are shown to outperform existing methods both quantitatively and qualitatively in terms of latent disentanglement across several challenging benchmark tasks.

Generalized Brans-Dicke theories in light of evolving dark energy

The expansion history of the Universe reconstructed from a combination of recent data indicates a preference for a changing Dark Energy (DE) density. Moreover, the DE density appears to be increasing with cosmic time, with its equation of state being below -1 on average, and possibly crossing the so-called phantom divide. Scalar-tensor theories, in which the scalar field mediates a force between matter particles, offer a natural framework in which the effective DE equation of state can be less than -1 and cross the phantom barrier. We consider the generalized Brans-Dicke (GBD) class of scalar-tensor theories and reconstruct their Lagrangian given the effective DE density extracted from recent data. Then, given the reconstructed Lagrangian, we solve for the linear perturbations and investigate the characteristic signatures of these reconstructed GBD in the cosmological observables, such as the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy, the galaxy number counts, and their cross-correlations. In particular, we demonstrate that the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect probed by the cross-correlation of CMB with the matter distribution can rule out scalar-tensor theories as the explanation of the observed DE dynamics independently from the laboratory and solar system fifth force constraints.

A model independent constraint on the temporal evolution of the speed of light

We present a new, model-independent method to reconstruct the temporal evolution of the speed of light $c(z)$ using astronomical observations. After validating our pipeline using mock datasets, we apply our method to the latest BAO and supernovae observations, and reconstruct $c(z)$ in the redshift range of $z\in[0,1.5]$. We find no evidence of a varying speed of light, although we see some interesting features of $Δc(z)$, the fractional difference between $c(z)$ and $c_0$ (the speed of light in SI), \eg, $Δc(z)<0$ and $Δc(z)>0$ at $0.2\lesssim z\lesssim0.5$ and $0.8\lesssim z\lesssim1.3$, respectively, although the significance of these features is currently far below statistical importance.

Cosmology with the MaunaKea Spectroscopic Explorer

This document summarizes the science cases related to cosmology studies with the MaunaKea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE), a highly-multiplexed (4332 fibers), wide FOV (1.5 sq deg), large aperture (11.25 m in diameter), optical/NIR (360nm to 1300nm) facility. The MSE High-z Cosmology Survey is designed to probe a large volume of the Universe with a galaxy density sufficient to measure the extremely-large-scale density fluctuations required to explore primordial non-Gaussianity and therefore inflation. We expect a measurement of the local parameter $f_{NL}$ to a precision $σ(f_{NL}) = 1.8$. Combining the MSE High-z Cosmology Survey data with data from a next generation CMB stage 4 experiment and existing DESI data will provide the first $5σ$ confirmation of the neutrino mass hierarchy from astronomical observations. In addition, the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) observed within the sample will provide measurements of the distance-redshift relationship in six different redshift bins between $z=1.6$ and 4.0, each with an accuracy of $\sim0.6\%$. The simultaneous measurements of Redshift Space Distortions (RSD) constrain the amplitude of the fluctuations, at a level ranging from $1.9\%$ to $3.6\%$. The proposed survey covers 10,000 ${\rm deg}^2$, measuring redshifts for three classes of target objects: Emission Line Galaxies (ELGs) with $1.6<z<2.4$, Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) with $2.4<z<4.0$, and quasars $2.1<z<3.5$. The ELGs and LBGs will be used as direct tracers of the underlying density field, while the Lyman-$α$ forests in the quasar spectra will be utilized to probe structure. Exposures of duration 1,800sec will guarantee a redshift determination efficiency of $90\%$ for ELGS and at least $50\%$ for LBGs. The survey will represent 100 nights per year for a 5-year MSE program. Finally, three ideas for additional projects of cosmological interest are proposed.

Relevance Factor VAE: Learning and Identifying Disentangled Factors

We propose a novel VAE-based deep auto-encoder model that can learn disentangled latent representations in a fully unsupervised manner, endowed with the ability to identify all meaningful sources of variation and their cardinality. Our model, dubbed Relevance-Factor-VAE, leverages the total correlation (TC) in the latent space to achieve the disentanglement goal, but also addresses the key issue of existing approaches which cannot distinguish between meaningful and nuisance factors of latent variation, often the source of considerable degradation in disentanglement performance. We tackle this issue by introducing the so-called relevance indicator variables that can be automatically learned from data, together with the VAE parameters. Our model effectively focuses the TC loss onto the relevant factors only by tolerating large prior KL divergences, a desideratum justified by our semi-parametric theoretical analysis. Using a suite of disentanglement metrics, including a newly proposed one, as well as qualitative evidence, we demonstrate that our model outperforms existing methods across several challenging benchmark datasets.

Possible pairing symmetry in the FeSe-based superconductors determined by quasiparticle interference

We study the momentum-integrated quasiparticle interference (QPI) in the FeSe-based superconductors. This method was recently proposed theoretically and has been applied to determine the pairing symmetry in these materials experimentally. Our findings suggest that, if the incipient bands and the superconducting (SC) pairing on them are taken into consideration, then the experimentally measured bound states and momentum-integrated QPI can be well fitted, even if the SC order parameter does not change sign on the Fermi surfaces. Therefore, we offer an alternative explanation to the experimental data, calling for more careful identification of the pairing symmetry that is important for the pairing mechanism.

The clustering of galaxies in the completed SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: a tomographic measurement of structure growth and expansion rate from anisotropic galaxy clustering in Fourier space

We perform a tomographic structure growth and expansion rate analysis using the monopole, quadrupole and hexadecapole of the redshift-space galaxy power spectrum derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Data Release 12 combined sample, which covers the redshift range of $0.20<z<0.75$. By allowing for overlap between neighbouring redshift slices in order to extract information on the light-cone, we successfully obtain joint BAO and RSD constraints with a precision of $2-3\%$ for $D_A$, $3-10\%$ for $H$ and $9-12\%$ for $fσ_8$ with a redshift resolution of $Δz\sim0.04$. Our measurement is consistent with that presented in arXiv:1709.05173, where the analysis is performed in configuration space. We apply our measurement to constrain the $f(R)$ gravity model, and find that the 95\% CL upper limit of ${\rm log_{10}}B_0$ can be reduced by 11\% by our tomographic BAO and RSD measurement.

Evolution of dark energy reconstructed from the latest observations

We reconstruct evolution of the dark energy (DE) density using a nonparametric Bayesian approach from a combination of latest observational data. We caution against parameterizing DE in terms of its equation of state as it can be singular in modified gravity models, and using it introduces a bias preventing negative effective DE densities. We find a $3.7σ$ preference for an evolving effective DE density with interesting features. For example, it oscillates around the $Λ$CDM prediction at $z\lesssim0.7$, and could be negative at $z\gtrsim2.3$; dark energy can be pressure-less at multiple redshifts, and a short period of cosmic deceleration is allowed at $0.1 \lesssim z\lesssim 0.2$. We perform the reconstruction for several choices of the prior, as well as a evidence-weighted reconstruction. We find that some of the dynamical features, such as the oscillatory behaviour of the DE density, are supported by the Bayesian evidence, which is a first detection of a dynamical DE with a positive Bayesian evidence. The evidence-weighted reconstruction prefers a dynamical DE at a $(2.5\pm0.06)σ$ significance level.

Constraining the dark matter-vacuum energy interaction using the EDGES 21-cm absorption signal

The recent measurement of the global 21-cm absorption signal reported by the Experiment to Detect the Global Epoch of Reionization Signature (EDGES) Collaboration is in tension with the prediction of the $Λ$CDM model at a $3.8\,σ$ significance level. In this work, we report that this tension can be released by introducing an interaction between dark matter and vacuum energy. We perform a model parameter estimation using a combined dataset including EDGES and other recent cosmological observations, and find that the EDGES measurement can marginally improve the constraint on parameters that quantify the interacting vacuum, and that the combined dataset favours the $Λ$CDM at 68\% CL. This proof-of-the-concept study demonstrates the potential power of future 21-cm experiments to constrain the interacting dark energy models.

The clustering of the SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey DR14 quasar sample: a tomographic measurement of cosmic structure growth and expansion rate based on optimal redshift weights

We develop a new method, which is based on the optimal redshift weighting scheme, to extract the maximal tomographic information of baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and redshift space distortions (RSD) from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Data Release 14 quasar (DR14Q) survey. We validate our method using the EZ mocks, and apply our pipeline to the eBOSS DR14Q sample in the redshift range of $0.8<z<2.2$. We report a joint measurement of $fσ_8$ and two-dimensional BAO parameters $D_{\rm A}$ and $H$ at four effective redshifts of $z_{\rm eff}=0.98, 1.23, 1.52$ and $1.94$, and provide the full data covariance matrix. Using our measurement combined with BOSS DR12, MGS and 6dFGS BAO measurements, we find that the existence of dark energy is supported by observations at a $7.4σ$ significance level. Combining our measurement with BOSS DR12 and Planck observations, we constrain the gravitational growth index to be $γ=0.580\pm0.082$, which is fully consistent with the prediction of general relativity. This paper is part of a set that analyses the eBOSS DR14 quasar sample.

The clustering of galaxies in the completed SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: a tomographic analysis of structure growth and expansion rate from anisotropic galaxy clustering

We perform a tomographic analysis of structure growth and expansion rate from the anisotropic galaxy clustering of the combined sample of Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Data Release 12, which covers the redshift range of $0.2<z<0.75$. In order to extract the redshift information of anisotropic galaxy clustering, we analyse this data set in nine overlapping redshift slices in configuration space and perform the joint constraints on the parameters $(D_V, F_{\mathrm{AP}}, fσ_8)$ using the correlation function multipoles. The analysis pipeline is validated using the MultiDark-Patchy mock catalogues. We obtain a measurement precision of $1.5\%-2.9\%$ for $D_V$, $5.2\%-9\%$ for $F_{\mathrm{AP}}$ and $13.3\%-24\%$ for $f σ_8$, depending on the effective redshift of the slices. We report a joint measurement of $(D_V, F_{\mathrm{AP}}, fσ_8)$ with the full covariance matrix in nine redshift slices. We use our joint BAO and RSD measurement combined with external datasets to constrain the gravitational growth index $γ$, and find $γ=0.656 \pm 0.057$, which is consistent with the $Λ$CDM prediction within 95\% CL.

The clustering of the SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey DR14 quasar sample: anisotropic clustering analysis in configuration-space

We explore the cosmological implications of anisotropic clustering measurements of the quasar sample from Data Release 14 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) in configuration space. The $\sim 147,000$ quasar sample observed by eBOSS offers a direct tracer of the density field and bridges the gap of previous BAO measurements between redshift $0.8<z<2.2$. By analysing the two-point correlation function characterized by clustering wedges $ξ_{\rm w_i}(s)$ and multipoles $ξ_{\ell}(s)$, we measure the angular diameter distance, Hubble parameter and cosmic structure growth rate. We define a systematic error budget for our measurements based on the analysis of $N$-body simulations and mock catalogues. Based on the DR14 large scale structure quasar sample at the effective redshift $z_{\rm eff}=1.52$, we find the growth rate of cosmic structure $fσ_8(z_{\rm eff})=0.396\pm 0.079$, and the geometric parameters $D_{\rm V}(z)/r_{\rm d}=26.47\pm 1.23$, and $F_{\rm AP}(z)=2.53\pm 0.22$, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic errors. These values are in excellent agreement with the best-fitting standard ${\rm ΛCDM}$ model to the latest cosmic microwave background data from Planck.

Schematic Polymorphism in the Abella Proof Assistant

The Abella interactive theorem prover has proven to be an effective vehicle for reasoning about relational specifications. However, the system has a limitation that arises from the fact that it is based on a simply typed logic: formalizations that are identical except in the respect that they apply to different types have to be repeated at each type. We develop an approach that overcomes this limitation while preserving the logical underpinnings of the system. In this approach object constructors, formulas and other relevant logical notions are allowed to be parameterized by types, with the interpretation that they stand for the (infinite) collection of corresponding constructs that are obtained by instantiating the type parameters. The proof structures that we consider for formulas that are schematized in this fashion are limited to ones whose type instances are valid proofs in the simply typed logic. We develop schematic proof rules that ensure this property, a task that is complicated by the fact that type information influences the notion of unification that plays a key role in the logic. Our ideas, which have been implemented in an updated version of the system, accommodate schematic polymorphism both in the core logic of Abella and in the executable specification logic that it embeds.

Generative Adversarial Talking Head: Bringing Portraits to Life with a Weakly Supervised Neural Network

This paper presents Generative Adversarial Talking Head (GATH), a novel deep generative neural network that enables fully automatic facial expression synthesis of an arbitrary portrait with continuous action unit (AU) coefficients. Specifically, our model directly manipulates image pixels to make the unseen subject in the still photo express various emotions controlled by values of facial AU coefficients, while maintaining her personal characteristics, such as facial geometry, skin color and hair style, as well as the original surrounding background. In contrast to prior work, GATH is purely data-driven and it requires neither a statistical face model nor image processing tricks to enact facial deformations. Additionally, our model is trained from unpaired data, where the input image, with its auxiliary identity label taken from abundance of still photos in the wild, and the target frame are from different persons. In order to effectively learn such model, we propose a novel weakly supervised adversarial learning framework that consists of a generator, a discriminator, a classifier and an action unit estimator. Our work gives rise to template-and-target-free expression editing, where still faces can be effortlessly animated with arbitrary AU coefficients provided by the user.

Cosmological constraints from the redshift dependence of the Alcock-Paczynski effect: Dynamical dark energy

We perform an anisotropic clustering analysis of 1,133,326 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Data Release (DR) 12 covering the redshift range $0.15<z<0.69$. The geometrical distortions of the galaxy positions, caused by incorrect cosmological model assumptions, are captured in the anisotropic two-point correlation function on scales 6 -- 40 $h^{-1}\rm Mpc$. The redshift evolution of this anisotropic clustering is used to place constraints on the cosmological parameters. We improve the methodology of Li et al. 2016, to enable efficient exploration of high dimensional cosmological parameter spaces, and apply it to the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrization of dark energy, $w=w_0+w_a{z}/({1+z})$. In combination with the CMB, BAO, SNIa and $H_0$ from Cepheid data, we obtain $Ω_m = 0.301 \pm 0.008,\ w_0 = -1.042 \pm 0.067,\ $ and $w_a = -0.07 \pm 0.29$ (68.3\% CL). Adding our new AP measurements to the aforementioned results reduces the error bars by $\sim$30 -- 40\% and improves the dark energy figure of merit by a factor of $\sim$2. We check the robustness of the results using realistic mock galaxy catalogues.

The clustering of the SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey DR14 quasar sample: Anisotropic Baryon Acoustic Oscillations measurements in Fourier-space with optimal redshift weights

We present a measurement of the anisotropic and isotropic Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 14 quasar sample with optimal redshift weights. Applying the redshift weights improves the constraint on the BAO dilation parameter $α(z_{\rm eff})$ by 17\%. We reconstruct the evolution history of the BAO distance indicators in the redshift range of $0.8<z<2.2$. This paper is part of a set that analyses the eBOSS DR14 quasar sample.
