Lagrangian correspondences of nonabelian Hodge type and shifted twistor structures

Classical nonabelian Hodge theory identifies Dolbeault and de Rham moduli spaces by providing a real-analytic isomorphism. In this paper, motivated by the Kapustin--Witten theory, we study this correspondence in the more general framework of perfect complexes on proper varieties, paying special attention to the surface case. We establish a Lagrangian correspondence which relates the shifted symplectic geometries by Pantev--To\"en--Vaqui\'e--Vezzosi (PTVV) between the derived stacks of flat and Higgs perfect complexes. We investigate the existence of derived twistor structures of hyperk\"ahler type on the moduli stack of perfect complexes endowed with $\lambda$-connections by Deligne--Hitchin--Simpson. We establish a version of the AKSZ/PTVV transgression, Lagrangian intersection, and (hyperk\"ahler) symplectic reduction theorems in this context. Moreover, we prove that the derived Riemann--Hilbert correspondence of Porta and Holstein--Porta, which states an equivalence of derived analytic stacks of perfect complexes on $X_{\mathrm{Betti}}$ and $X_{\mathrm{DR}}$, is compatible with the natural shifted--symplectic structures. We then study the relation between the shifted (pre-)twistor structures and the shifted symplectic forms on the fibers, and prove that the analytic Deligne--Hitchin--Simpson moduli stack on a smooth projective variety $X$ has a canonical $2(1-\dim X)$ shifted pretwistor structure over $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}}$, a result which has been anticipated for some time. In particular, the moduli stack of solutions to the Kapustin--Witten equations modulo gauge equivalence on a smooth proper complex algebraic surface exibits a $(-2)$-shifted (pre)twistor structure as a family over $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}}$.

Fano threefolds of genus 12 with large automorphism group in positive and mixed characteristic

We study prime Fano threefolds of genus 12 ($V_{22}$-varieties) with positive-dimensional automorphism groups in positive and mixed characteristic. We classify such varieties over any perfect field. In particular, we prove that $V_{22}$-varieties of Mukai-Umemura type over $k$ exist if and only if $\mathrm{char}\ k \neq 2$, $5$. We also prove the same result for $\mathbb{G}_a$-type. As arithmetic applications, we show that the Shafarevich conjecture holds for $V_{22}$-varieties of Mukai-Umemura type and of $\mathbb{G}_m$-type, while it fails for $V_{22}$-varieties of $\mathbb{G}_a$-type. Moreover, we prove that there exists $V_{22}$-varieties over $\mathbb{Z}$, whereas there do not exist $V_{22}$-varieties over $\mathbb{Z}$ whose generic fiber has a positive-dimensional automorphism group.

IMProofBench: Benchmarking AI on Research-Level Mathematical Proof Generation

As the mathematical capabilities of large language models (LLMs) improve, it becomes increasingly important to evaluate their performance on research-level tasks at the frontier of mathematical knowledge. However, existing benchmarks are limited, as they focus solely on final-answer questions or high-school competition problems. To address this gap, we introduce IMProofBench, a private benchmark consisting of 77 peer-reviewed problems developed by expert mathematicians. Each problem requires a detailed proof and is paired with subproblems that have final answers, supporting both an evaluation by human experts and a large-scale quantitative analysis through automated grading. Furthermore, unlike prior benchmarks, the evaluation setup simulates a realistic research environment: models operate in an agentic framework with tools like web search for literature review and mathematical software such as SageMath. Our results show that current LLMs can already solve a significant percentage of research-level questions. IMProofBench will continue to evolve as a dynamic benchmark in collaboration with the mathematical community, ensuring its relevance for evaluating the next generation of LLMs.

Quintic del Pezzo threefolds in positive and mixed characteristic

We show that smooth quintic del Pezzo threefolds over arbitrary base schemes are classified by non-degenerate ternary symmetric bilinear forms. Then we describe the automorphism group schemes, the Hilbert schemes of lines and the orbit structures of quintic del Pezzo threefolds, and we find several new phenomena in characteristic two. As arithmetic applications, we prove a refinement of the Shafarevich conjecture, and prove that there are exactly two isomorphism classes of quintic del Pezzo threefolds over the ring of rational integers.

Examples of real stable bundles on K3 surfaces

Motivated by gauge theory on manifolds with exceptional holonomy, we construct examples of stable bundles on K3 surfaces that are invariant under two involutions: one is holomorphic; and the other is anti-holomorphic. These bundles are obtained via the monad construction, and stability is examined using the Generalised Hoppe Criterion of Jardim-Menet-Prata-S\'a Earp, which requires verifying an arithmetic condition for elements in the Picard group of the surfaces. We establish this by using computer aid in two critical steps: first, we construct K3 surfaces with small Picard group-one branched double cover of $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$ with Picard rank $2$ using a new method which may be of independent interest; and second, we verify the arithmetic condition for carefully chosen elements of the Picard group, which provides a systematic approach for constructing further examples.

Arithmetic finiteness of Mukai varieties of genus 7

We study arithmetic finiteness of prime Fano threefolds of genus 7 and their higher dimensional generalization, called Mukai varieties of genus 7. For prime Fano threefolds of genus 7, we provide an arithmetic refinement of the Torelli theorem, obtain Shafarevich-type finiteness results, and show the failure of the N\'eron--Ogg--Shafarevich criterion of good reduction. For Mukai varieties of genus 7, we prove that Shafarevich-type finiteness results hold in dimensions 9 and 10, but fail in dimension 6. In addition, we show that Mukai $n$-folds of genus 7 over $\mathbb{Z}$ do not exist for $n \leq 4$, whereas they exist for $5 \leq n \leq 10$.

Spin(7)-instantons on Joyce's first examples of compact Spin(7)-manifolds

We construct $Spin(7)$-instantons on one of Joyce's compact $Spin(7)$-manifolds. The underlying compact $Spin(7)$-manifold given by Joyce is the same as in Lewis' construction of $Spin(7)$-instantons. However, our construction method and the resulting instantons are new. The compact $Spin(7)$-manifold is constructed by gluing a $Spin(7)$-orbifold and certain local model spaces around the orbifold singularities. We construct our instantons by gluing non-flat connections on the local model spaces to a flat connection on the $Spin(7)$-orbifold. We deliver more than $20,000$ new four-parameter families of examples of $Spin(7)$-instantons within the structure groups $SO(3), SO(4), SO(5), SO(7)$, and $SO(8)$.

The Kapustin-Witten equations and nonabelian Hodge theory

Arising from a topological twist of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory are the Kapustin-Witten equations, a family of gauge-theoretic equations on a four-manifold parametrized by $t\in\mathbb{P}^1$. The parameter corresponds to a linear combination of two super charges in the twist. When $t=0$ and the four-manifold is a compact Kähler surface, the equations become the Simpson equations, which was originally studied by Hitchin on a compact Riemann surface, as demonstrated independently in works of Nakajima and the third-named author. At the same time, there is a notion of $λ$-connection in the nonabelian Hodge theory of Donaldson-Corlette-Hitchin-Simpson in which $λ$ is also valued in $\mathbb{P}^1$. Varying $λ$ interpolates between the moduli space of semistable Higgs sheaves with vanishing Chern classes on a smooth projective variety (at $λ=0$) and the moduli space of semisimple local systems on the same variety (at $λ=1$) in the twistor space. In this article, we utilise the correspondence furnished by nonabelian Hodge theory to describe a relation between the moduli spaces of solutions to the equations by Kapustin and Witten at $t=0$ and $t \in \mathbb{R} \setminus \{ 0 \}$ on a smooth, compact Kähler surface. We then provide supporting evidence for a more general form of this relation on a smooth, closed four-manifold by computing its expected dimension of the moduli space for each of $t=0$ and $t \in \mathbb{R} \setminus \{ 0 \}$.

Universal structures in $\mathbb C$-linear enumerative invariant theories

An enumerative invariant theory in Algebraic Geometry, Differential Geometry, or Representation Theory, is the study of invariants which 'count' $τ$-(semi)stable objects $E$ with fixed topological invariants $[E]=α$ in some geometric problem, using a virtual class $[{\cal M}_α^{\rm ss}(τ)]_{\rm virt}$ in some homology theory for the moduli spaces ${\cal M}_α^{\rm st}(τ)\subseteq{\cal M}_α^{\rm ss}(τ)$ of $τ$-(semi)stable objects. Examples include Mochizuki's invariants counting coherent sheaves on surfaces, Donaldson-Thomas type invariants counting coherent sheaves on Calabi-Yau 3- and 4-folds and Fano 3-folds, and Donaldson invariants of 4-manifolds. We make conjectures on new universal structures common to many enumerative invariant theories. Such theories have two moduli spaces ${\cal M},{\cal M}^{\rm pl}$, where the second author gives $H_*({\cal M})$ the structure of a graded vertex algebra, and $H_*({\cal M}^{\rm pl})$ a graded Lie algebra, closely related to $H_*({\cal M})$. The virtual classes $[{\cal M}_α^{\rm ss}(τ)]_{\rm virt}$ take values in $H_*({\cal M}^{\rm pl})$. Defining $[{\cal M}_α^{\rm ss}(τ)]_{\rm virt}$ when ${\cal M}_α^{\rm st}(τ)\ne{\cal M}_α^{\rm ss}(τ)$ (in gauge theory, when the moduli space contains reducibles) is a difficult problem. We conjecture that there is a natural way to define $[{\cal M}_α^{\rm ss}(τ)]_{\rm virt}$ in homology over $\mathbb Q$, and that the resulting classes satisfy a universal wall-crossing formula under change of stability condition $τ$, written using the Lie bracket on $H_*({\cal M}^{\rm pl})$. We prove our conjectures for moduli spaces of representations of quivers without oriented cycles. Our conjectures in Algebraic Geometry using Behrend-Fantechi virtual classes are proved in the sequel arXiv:2111.04694.

The Blowup Formula for the Instanton Part of Vafa-Witten Invariants on Projective Surfaces

We prove a blow-up formula for the generating series of virtual $\chi_y$-genera for moduli spaces of sheaves on projective surfaces, which is related to a conjectured formula for topological $\chi_y$-genera of G\"ottsche. Our formula is a refinement of one by Vafa-Witten relating to S-duality. We prove the formula simultaneously in the setting of Gieseker stable sheaves on polarised surfaces and also in the setting of framed sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$. The proof is based on the blow-up algorithm of Nakajima-Yoshioka for framed sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$, which has recently been extend to the setting of Gieseker $H$-stable sheaves on $H$-polarised surfaces by Kuhn-Tanaka.

A blowup formula for virtual enumerative invariants on projective surfaces

We apply virtual localization to the problem of finding blowup formulae for virtual sheaf-theoretic invariants on a smooth projective surface. This leads to a general procedure that can be used to express virtual enumerative invariants on the blowup in terms of those on the original surface. We use an enhanced master space construction over the moduli spaces of $m$-stable sheaves introduced by Nakajima and Yoshioka. Our work extends their analogous results for the equivariant moduli spaces of framed sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$. In contrast to their work, we make no use of GIT methods and work with an arbitrary smooth complex projective surface, assuming only the absence of strictly semistable sheaves. The main examples to keep in mind are Mochizuki's virtual analogue of the Donaldson invariant and the virtual $χ_y$-genus of the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves on the surface.

On orientations for gauge-theoretic moduli spaces

Let $X$ be a compact manifold, $D$ a real elliptic operator on $X$, $G$ a Lie group, $P\to X$ a principal $G$-bundle, and ${\mathcal B}_P$ the infinite-dimensional moduli space of all connections $\nabla_P$ on $P$ modulo gauge, as a topological stack. For each $[\nabla_P]\in{\mathcal B}_P$, we can consider the twisted elliptic operator $D^{\nabla_{Ad(P)}}$ on X. This is a continuous family of elliptic operators over the base ${\mathcal B}_P$, and so has an orientation bundle $O^D_P\to{\mathcal B}_P$, a principal ${\mathbb Z}_2$-bundle parametrizing orientations of Ker$D^{\nabla_{Ad(P)}}\oplus$Coker$D^{\nabla_{Ad(P)}}$ at each $[\nabla_P]$. An orientation on $({\mathcal B}_P,D)$ is a trivialization $O^D_P\cong{\mathcal B}_P\times{\mathbb Z}_2$. In gauge theory one studies moduli spaces $\mathcal M$ of connections $\nabla_P$ on $P$ satisfying some curvature condition, such as anti-self-dual instantons on Riemannian 4-manifolds $(X, g)$. Under good conditions $\mathcal M$ is a smooth manifold, and orientations on $({\mathcal B}_P,D)$ pull back to orientations on $\mathcal M$ in the usual sense under the inclusion ${\mathcal M}\hookrightarrow{\mathcal B}_P$. This is important in areas such as Donaldson theory, where one needs an orientation on $\mathcal M$ to define enumerative invariants. We explain a package of techniques, some known and some new, for proving orientability and constructing canonical orientations on $({\mathcal B}_P,D)$, after fixing some algebro-topological information on $X$. We use these to construct canonical orientations on gauge theory moduli spaces, including new results for moduli spaces of flat connections on 2- and 3-manifolds, instantons, Kapustin-Witten and Vafa-Witten equations on 4-manifolds, and the Haydys-Witten equations on 5-manifolds. Two sequels arXiv:1811.02405, arXiv:1811.09658 discuss orientations in 7 and 8 dimensions.

Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces I: stable case

On a polarised surface, solutions of the Vafa-Witten equations correspond to certain polystable Higgs pairs. When stability and semistability coincide, the moduli space admits a symmetric obstruction theory and a $\mathbb C^*$ action with compact fixed locus. Applying virtual localisation we define invariants constant under deformations. When the vanishing theorem of Vafa-Witten holds, the result is the (signed) Euler characteristic of the moduli space of instantons. In general there are other, rational, contributions. Calculations of these on surfaces with positive canonical bundle recover the first terms of modular forms predicted by Vafa and Witten.

Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces II: semistable case

We propose a definition of Vafa-Witten invariants counting semistable Higgs pairs on a polarised surface. We use virtual localisation applied to Mochizuki/Joyce-Song pairs. For $K_S\le0$ we expect our definition coincides with an alternative definition using weighted Euler characteristics. We prove this for deg $K_S<0$ here, and it is proved for $S$ a K3 surface in \cite{MT}. For K3 surfaces we calculate the invariants in terms of modular forms which generalise and prove conjectures of Vafa and Witten.

A perturbation and generic smoothness of the Vafa-Witten moduli spaces on closed symplectic four-manifolds

We prove a Freed-Uhlenbeck style generic smoothness theorem for the moduli space of solutions to the Vafa--Witten equations on a closed symplectic four-manifold by using a method developed by Feehan for the study of the $PU(2)$-monopole equations on smooth closed four-manifolds. We introduce a set of perturbation terms to the Vafa--Witten equations, and prove that the moduli space of solutions to the perturbed Vafa-Witten equations on a closed symplectic four-manifold for the structure group $SU(2)$ or $SO(3)$ is a smooth manifold of dimension zero for a generic choice of the perturbation parameters.

On the singular sets of solutions to the Kapustin-Witten equations and the Vafa-Witten ones on compact Kähler surfaces

This article finds a structure of singular sets on compact Kahler surfaces, which Taubes introduced in the studies of the asymptotic analysis of solutions to the Kapustin-Witten equations and the Vafa-Witten ones originally on smooth four-manifolds. These equations can be seen as real four-dimensional analogues of the Hitchin equations on Riemann surfaces, and one of common obstacles to be overcome is a certain unboundedness of solutions to these equations, especially of the "Higgs fields". The singular sets by Taubes describe part of the limiting behaviour of a sequence of solutions with this unboundedness property, and Taubes proved that the real two-dimensional Haussdorff measures of these singular sets are finite. In this article, we look into the singular sets, when the underlying manifold is a compact Kahler surface, and find out that they have the structure of an analytic subvariety in this case.

Seiberg-Witten type equations on compact symplectic 6-manifolds

In this article, we consider a gauge-theoretic equation on compact symplectic 6-manifolds, which forms an elliptic system after gauge fixing. This can be thought of as a higher-dimensional analogue of the Seiberg-Witten equation. By using the virtual neighbourhood method by Ruan, we define an integer-valued invariant, a 6-dimensional Seiberg-Witten invariant, from the moduli space of solutions to the equations, assuming that the moduli space is compact; and it has no reducible solutions. We prove that the moduli spaces are compact if the underlying manifold is a compact Kahler threefold. We then compute the integers in some cases.

Some boundedness properties of solutions to the Vafa-Witten equations on closed four-manifolds

We consider a set of gauge-theoretic equations on closed oriented four-manifolds, which was introduced by Vafa and Witten. The equations involve a triple consisting of a connection and extra fields associated to a principal bundle over a closed oriented four-manifold. They are similar to Hitchin's equations over compact Riemann surfaces, and as part of the resemblance, there is no $L^2$-bound on the curvature without an $L^2$-bound on the extra fields. In this article, however, we observe that under the particular circumstance where the curvature does not become concentrated and the limiting connection is not locally reducible, one obtains an $L^2$-bound on the extra fields.
