The Signs of Quantum Dot-Lead Matrix Elements: The Effect on Transport vs. Spectral Properties

A small quantum dot coupled to two external leads is considered. Different signs of the dot-leads coupling matrix elements give rise to qualitatively different behavior of physical observables such as the conductance, the phase of the transmission amplitude and the differential capacitance of the dot. For certain relative signs the conductance may vanish at values of the gate potential, where the spectral density is maximal. Zeroes of the conductance are robust against increasing the dot-lead coupling. They are associated with abrupt phase lapses in the transmission phase whose width vanishes as the square of the temperature. We carefully distinguish between phase lapses of $-π$ and phase anti-lapses of $π$.

Aharonov-Bohm Interferometry with Interacting Quantum Dots: Spin Configurations, Asymmetric Interference Patterns, Bias-Voltage-Induced Aharonov-Bohm Oscillations, and Symmetries of Transport Coefficients

We study electron transport through multiply-connected mesoscopic geometries containing interacting quantum dots. Our formulation covers both equilibrium and non-equilibrium physics. We discuss the relation of coherent transport channels through the quantum dot to flux-sensitive Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the total conductance of the device. Contributions to transport in first and second order in the intrinsic line width of the dot levels are addressed in detail. We predict an interaction-induced asymmetry in the amplitude of the interference signal around resonance peaks as a consequence of incoherence associated with spin-flip processes. This asymmetry can be used to probe the total spin of the quantum dot. Such a probe requires less stringent experimental conditions than the Kondo effect, which provides the same information. We show that first-order contributions can be partially or even fully coherent. This contrasts with the sequential-tunneling picture, which describes first-order transport as a sequence of incoherent tunneling processes. We predict bias-voltage induced Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of physical quantities which are independent of flux in the linear-response regime. Going beyond the Onsager relations we analyze the relations between the space symmetry group of the setup and the flux-dependent non-linear conductance.

Comment on ``Quantum Pump for Spin and Charge Transport in a Luttinger Liquid''

This is a Comment to the paper by Sharma and Chamon in Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 096401 (cond-mat/0011025). We show that the prediction of the universal charge pumped per cycle in the fast limit for attractive electron-electron interaction is invalid. We also prove the quantization of the pumped charge for repulsive interaction in the limit of adiabatic pumping.

Spectral scrambling in Coulomb-blockade quantum dots

We study the fluctuations of an energy level as a function of the number of electrons $m$ added to a Coulomb-blockade quantum dot. A microscopic calculation in the limit of Koopmans' theorem predicts that the standard deviation of these fluctuations behaves as $\sqrt{m}$ in the absence of surface charge but is linear in $m$ when the effect of a surface charge in a finite geometry is included. The microscopic results are compared to a parametric random-matrix approach. We estimate the number of electrons it takes to scramble the spectrum completely in terms of the interaction strength, the dimensionless Thouless conductance, and the symmetry class.

Does Berry phase exist for a system coupled to its environment?

Berry phase was originally defined for systems whose states are separated by finite energy gaps. One might naively expect that a system without a gap cannot have a Berry phase. Despite this we ask whether a Berry phase can be observed in a system which has a continuous spectrum because its coupling to the environment has broadened its energy levels. We find that, contrary to the above naive expectation, there are conditions under which the Berry phase is observable. However it is modified by the presence of the environment and no longer has a simple geometric interpretation. The model system we consider is a spin-half in a slowly rotating magnetic field, with the spin also coupled to a Ohmic environment of harmonic oscillators (spin-boson model). Here we discuss the high-temperature limit of this model. We then interpret our results in terms of a spin under the influence of a classical stochastic field.

Orthogonality Catastrophe in Parametric Random Matrices

We study the orthogonality catastrophe due to a parametric change of the single-particle (mean field) Hamiltonian of an ergodic system. The Hamiltonian is modeled by a suitable random matrix ensemble. We show that the overlap between the original and the parametrically modified many-body ground states, $S$, taken as Slater determinants, decreases like $n^{-k x^2}$, where $n$ is the number of electrons in the systems, $k$ is a numerical constant of the order of one, and $x$ is the deformation measured in units of the typical distance between anticrossings. We show that the statistical fluctuations of $S$ are largely due to properties of the levels near the Fermi energy.

Anderson Orthogonality Catastrophe in Disordered Systems

We study the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe (AOC) in finite conductors with diffusive disorder. The disorder averaged logarithm of $χ$, the overlap between the ground states before and after adding a static impurity, is found to depend nonmonotonically on the disorder. In two dimensions $<\lnχ^{-1}> \propto \ln^2 N$ in the weak disorder limit, thus showing a stronger dependence on the number of electrons $N$ than in the canonical AOC. A very broad tail of the distribution of $χ$, found numerically, is a signature of the importance of a few-level statistics at the Fermi energy.

Shot Noise in Disordered Junctions: Interaction Corrections

We study current correlation functions in a diffusive junction out of equilibrium. We calculate corrections to the electric current and to the zero frequency shot noise due to electron-electron interactions. Contrary to the equilibrium situation (where the corrections to the current and to the current noise are related through the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT)), these two quantities behave differently: the correction to the electron current are governed by the largest of temperature and applied voltage, while the correction to the shot noise is always governed by the temperature. Can backscattering off an impurity enhance the current?

It is well known that while forward scattering has no effect on the conductance of one-dimensional systems, backscattering off a static impurity suppresses the current. We study the effect of a time-dependent point impurity on the conductance of a one-channel quantum wire. At strong repulsive interaction (Luttinger liquid parameter g<1/2), backscattering renders the conductance greater than its value e^2/h in the absence of the impurity. A possible experimental realization of our model is a constricted Hall bar at fractional filling factors ν=1/(2n+1) with a time-dependent voltage at the constriction.

The Effect of Interaction on Shot Noise in The Quantum Limit

We employ a non-linear sigma model defined on a Keldysh contour to study the current and the current noise in a diffusive micro-bridge in the presence of electron-electron interactions. Out of equilibrium the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) does not apply, hence these two quantities are not simply interrelated. For a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) we obtain logarithmic singularities in the low frequency limit. PACS Nos. 71.10.Ay, 71.23.An, 73.50.Td

Coherence and Partial Coherence in Interacting Electron Systems

We study coherence of electron transport through interacting quantum dots and discuss the relation of the coherent part to the flux-sensitive conductance for three different types of Aharonov-Bohm interferometers. Contributions to transport in first and second order in the intrinsic line width of the dot levels are addressed in detail. We predict an asymmetry of the interference signal around resonance peaks as a consequence of incoherence associated with spin-flip processes. Furthermore, we show by strict calculation that first-order contributions can be partially or even fully coherent. This contrasts with the sequential-tunneling picture which describes first-order transport as a sequence of incoherent tunneling processes.

Correlations in the cotunneling regime of a quantum dot

Off-resonance conductance through weakly coupled quantum dots ("valley conductance") is governed by cotunneling processes in which a large number of dot states participate. Virtually the same states participate in the transport at consecutive valleys, which leads to significant valley-valley conductance correlations. These correlations are calculated within the constant interaction model. Comparison with experiment shows that these correlations are less robust in reality. Among the possible reasons for this is the breakdown of the constant interaction model, accompanied by "scrambling" of the dot as the particle number is varied.

Correlations in optical phonon spectra of complex solids

Spectral correlations in the optical phonon spectrum of a solid with a complex unit cell are analysed using the Wigner-Dyson statistical approach. Despite the fact that all force constants are real, we find that the statistics are predominantly of the GUE type depending on the location within the Brillouin zone of a crystal and the unit cell symmetry. Analytic and numerical results for the crossover from GOE to GUE statistics are presented.

An Approximate Sign Sum Rule for the Transmission Amplitude Through a Quantum Dot

We study the phase of the transmission amplitude through a disordered quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime. We calculate the phase dependence on gate voltage for a disorder configuration. We show that over a ``period'', consisting of a resonance and a transmission valley, the total phase change is 0 (mod $2π$). Deviations from this sum rule are small in the parameter (level spacing/charging energy). The disorder-averaged phase-phase correlation function is found showing interaction-induced correlations between phases at different gate voltages.

Coulomb Blockade Fluctuations in Disordered Quantum Dots

We discuss some recent results on the statistics of the Coulomb Blockade in disordered quantum dots containing spinless interacting fermions using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. We concentrate on the regime r_s >~1, with finite dimensionless conductance g. We present significantly different results for the cases of a Coulomb and a nearest-neighbour bare interaction. We show that neglecting rearrangements when the particle number is changed (Koopmans' approximation) can lead to large errors, and show how the spectral statistics of the self-consistent single particle orbitals evolve with the interaction strength.

The Addition Spectrum and Koopmans' Theorem for Disordered Quantum Dots

We investigate the addition spectrum of disordered quantum dots containing spinless interacting fermions using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. We concentrate on the regime r_s >~1, with finite dimensionless conductance g. We find that in this approximation the peak spacing fluctuations do not scale with the mean single particle level spacing for either Coulomb or nearest neighbour interactions when r_s >~1. We also show that Koopmans' approximation to the addition spectrum can lead to errors that are of order the mean level spacing or larger, both in the mean addition spectrum peak spacings, and in the peak spacing fluctuations.

Density Modulations and Addition Spectra of Interacting Electrons in Disordered Quantum Dots

We analyse the ground state of spinless fermions on a lattice in a weakly disordered potential, interacting via a nearest neighbour interaction, by applying the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. We find that charge density modulations emerge progressively when r_s >1, even away from half-filling, with only short-range density correlations. Classical geometry dependent "magic numbers" can show up in the addition spectrum which are remarkably robust against quantum fluctuations and disorder averaging.

Correlations of conductance peaks and transmission phases in deformed quantum dots

We investigate the Coulomb blockade resonances and the phase of the transmission amplitude of a deformed ballistic quantum dot weakly coupled to leads. We show that preferred single--particle levels exist which stay close to the Fermi energy for a wide range of values of the gate voltage. These states give rise to sequences of Coulomb blockade resonances with correlated peak heights and transmission phases. The correlation of the peak heights becomes stronger with increasing temperature. The phase of the transmission amplitude shows lapses by $π$ between the resonances. Implications for recent experiments on ballistic quantum dots are discussed.
