Current noise geometrically generated by a driven magnet

We consider a non-equilibrium cross-response phenomenon, whereby a driven magnetization gives rise to electric shot noise (but no d.c. current). This effect is realized on a nano-scale, with a small metallic ferromagnet which is tunnel-coupled to two normal metal leads. The driving gives rise to a precessing magnetization. The geometrically generated noise is related to a non-equilibrium distribution in the ferromagnet. Our protocol provides a new channel for detecting and characterizing ferromagnetic resonance.

How to observe and quantify quantum-discorded states

Quantum correlations between parts of a composite system most clearly reveal themselves through entanglement. Designing, maintaining, and controlling entangled systems is very demanding, which raises the stakes for understanding the efficacy of entanglement-free, yet quantum, correlations, exemplified by quantum discord. Discord is defined via conditional mutual entropies of parts of a composite system, and its direct measurement is hardly possible even via full tomographic characterization of the system state. Here we design a simple protocol to detect quantum discord and characterize a discorded state in an unentangled bipartite system. Our protocol is based on an electronic setup and relies on a characteristic of discord that can be extracted from repeated direct measurements of current correlations between subsystems. The proposed protocol opens a way of extending experimental studies of discord to many-body condensed matter systems.

Synthesizing a Fractional v=2/3 State from Particle and Hole States

Topological edge-reconstruction occurs in hole-conjugate states of the fractional quantum Hall effect. The frequently studied polarized state of filling factor v=2/3 was originally proposed to harbor two counter-propagating edge modes: a downstream v=1 and an upstream v=1/3. However, charge equilibration between these two modes always led to an observed downstream v=2/3 charge mode accompanied by an upstream neutral mode (preventing an observation of the original proposal). Here, we present a new approach to synthetize the v=2/3 edge mode from its basic counter-propagating charged constituents, allowing a controlled equilibration between the two counter-propagating charge modes. This novel platform is based on a carefully designed double-quantum-well, which hosts two populated electronic sub-bands (lower and upper), with corresponding filling factors, vl & vu. By separating the 2D plane to two gated intersecting halves, each with different fillings, counter-propagating chiral modes can be formed along the intersection line. Equilibration between these modes can be controlled with the top gates' voltage and the magnetic field. Our measurements of the two-terminal conductance G2T and the presence of a neutral mode allowed following the transition from the non-equilibrated charged modes, manifested by G2T=(4/3)e2/h, to the fully equilibrated modes, with a downstream charge mode with G2T=(2/3)e2/h accompanied by an upstream neutral mode.

Noise on complex quantum Hall edges: Chiral anomaly and heat diffusion

Electrical and thermal conductances of a quantum Hall bar reflect the topological structure of the incompressible bulk phase. Here we show that noise of electrical current carried through the edge evidences the interplay between these two topological observables. Transport through a structured edge is modeled by a voltage-biased line junction made up of two counter-propagating modes associated with respective filling factors. Specifically, we focus on the edge of a $ν=2/3$ fractional quantum Hall state. Noise is generated at a point distinctly separated from the hot spot (where most of the Ohmic dissipation takes place) and reflects the competition between ballistically carried downstream current and diffusively carried heat (which can propagate also upstream). We propose specific setups where our predictions can be measured.

A thermally driven spin-transfer-torque system far from equilibrium: enhancement of the thermoelectric current via pumping current

We consider a small itinerant ferromagnet exposed to an external magnetic field and strongly driven by a thermally induced spin current. For this model, we derive the quasi-classical equations of motion for the magnetization where the effects of a dynamical non-equilibrium distribution function are taken into account self-consistently. We obtain the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation supplemented by a spin-transfer torque term of Slonczewski form. We identify a regime of persistent precessions in which we find an enhancement of the thermoelectric current by the pumping current.

Parafermionic generalization of the topological Kondo effect

We propose and study a parafermionic generalization of the topological Kondo effect. The latter has been predicted to arise for a Coulomb-blockaded mesoscopic topological superconductor (Majorana box), where at least three normal leads are tunnel-coupled to different Majorana zero modes on the box. The Majorana states represent a quantum impurity spin that is partially screened due to cotunneling processes between leads, with a stable non-Fermi liquid ground state. Our theory studies a generalization where (i) Majorana states are replaced by topologically protected parafermionic zero modes, (ii) charging effects again define a spin-like quantum impurity on the resulting parafermion box, and (iii) normal leads are substituted by fractional edge states. In this multi-terminal problem, different fractional edge leads couple only via the parafermion box. We show that although the linear conductance tensor exhibits similar behavior as in the Majorana case, both at weak and strong coupling, our parafermionic generalization is actually not a Kondo problem but defines a rich new class of quantum impurity problems. At the strong-coupling fixed point, a current injected through a reference lead will be isotropically partitioned into outgoing currents in all other leads, together with a universal negative current scattered into the reference lead. The device can thus be operated as current extractor, where the current partitioning is noiseless at the fixed point. We describe a fractional quantum Hall setup proximitized by superconductors and ferromagnets, which could allow for an experimental realization in the near future.

Engineering statistical transmutation of identical quantum particles

A fundamental pillar of quantum mechanics concerns indistinguishable quantum particles. In three dimensions they may be classified into fermions or bosons, having, respectively, antisymmetric or symmetric wave functions under particle exchange. One of numerous manifestations of this quantum statistics is the tendency of fermions (bosons) to anti-bunch (bunch). In a two-particle scattering experiment with two possible outgoing channels, the probability of the two particles to arrive each at a different terminal is enhanced (with respect to classical particles) for fermions, and reduced for bosons. Here we show that by entangling the particles with an external degree of freedom, we can engineer quantum statistical transmutation, e.g. causing fermions to bunch. Our analysis may have consequences on the observed fractional statistics of anyons, including non-Abelian statistics, with serious implications on quantum computing operations in the presence of external degrees of freedom.

Universal quantum noise in adiabatic pumping

We consider charge pumping in a system of parafermions, implemented at fractional quantum Hall edges. Our pumping protocol leads to a noisy behavior of the pumped current. As the adiabatic limit is approached, not only does the noisy behavior persist but the counting statistics of the pumped current becomes robust and universal. In particular, the resulting Fano factor is given in terms of the system's topological degeneracy and the pumped quasiparticle charge. Our results are also applicable to the more conventional Majorana fermions.

Incoherent transport on the $ν=2/3$ quantum Hall edge

The nature of edge state transport in quantum Hall systems has been studied intensely ever since Halperin [1] noted its importance for the quantization of the Hall conductance. Since then, there have been many developments in the study of edge states in the quantum Hall effect, including the prediction of multiple counter-propagating modes in the fractional quantum Hall regime, the prediction of edge mode renormalization due to disorder, and studies of how the sample confining potential affects the edge state structure (edge reconstruction), among others. In this paper, we study edge transport for the $ν_{\text{bulk}}=2/3$ edge in the disordered, fully incoherent transport regime. To do so, we use a hydrodynamic approximation for the calculation of voltage and temperature profiles along the edge of the sample. Within this formalism, we study two different bare mode structures with tunneling: the original edge structure predicted by Wen [2] and MacDonald [3], and the more complicated edge structure proposed by Meir [4], whose renormalization and transport characteristics were discussed by Wang, Meir and Gefen (WMG) [5]. We find that in the fully incoherent regime, the topological characteristics of transport (quantized electrical and heat conductance) are intact, with finite size corrections which are determined by the extent of equilibration. In particular, our calculation of conductance for the WMG model in a double QPC geometry reproduce conductance results of a recent experiment by R. Sabo, et al. [17], which are inconsistent with the model of MacDonald. Our results can be explained in the charge/neutral mode picture, with incoherent analogues of the renormalization fixed points of Ref. [5]. Additionally, we find diffusive $(\sim1/L)$ conductivity corrections to the heat conductance in the fully incoherent regime for both models of the edge.

Measurement and control of a Coulomb-blockaded parafermion box

Parafermionic zero modes are fractional topologically protected quasiparticles expected to arise in various platforms. We show that Coulomb charging effects define a parafermion box with unique access options via fractional edge states and/or quantum antidots. Basic protocols for the detection, manipulation, and control of parafermionic quantum states are formulated. With those tools, one may directly observe the dimension of the zero-mode Hilbert space, prove the degeneracy of this space, and perform on-demand digital operations satisfying a parafermionic algebra.

Emulating Majorana fermions and their braiding by Ising spin chains

We analyse the control of Majorana zero-energy states by mapping the fermionic system onto a chain of Ising spins. Although the topological protection is lost for the Ising system, the mapping provides additional insight into the nature of the quantum states. By controlling the local magnetic field, one can separate the Ising chain into ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases, corresponding to topological and non-topological sections of the fermionic system. In this paper we propose (topologically non-protected) protocols performing the braiding operation, and in fact also more general rotations. We first consider a T-junction geometry, but we also propose a protocol for a purely one-dimensional system. Both setups rely on an extra spin-1/2 coupler. By including the extra spin in the T-junction geometry, we overcome limitations due to the 1D character of the Jordan-Wigner transformation. In the 1D geometry the coupler, which controls one of the Ising links, should be manipulated once the ferromagnetic (topological) section of the chain is moved far away. We also propose experimental implementations of our scheme. One is based on a chain of flux qubits which allows for all needed control fields. We also describe how to translate our scheme for the 1D setup to a chain of superconducting wires hosting each a pair of Majorana edge states.

Ubiquitous non-local entanglement with Majorana bound states

Entanglement in quantum mechanics contradicts local realism, and is a manifestation of quantum non-locality. Its presence can be detected through the violation of Bell, or CHSH inequalities. Paradigmatic quantum systems provide examples of both, non-entangled and entangled states. Here we consider a minimal complexity setup consisting of 6 Majorana bound states. We find that any allowed state in the degenerate Majorana space is non-locally entangled. We show how to measure (with available techniques) the CHSH-violating correlations, using either intermediate strength or weak measurement protocols.

Spin Mode-Switching at the Edge of a Quantum Hall System

Quantum Hall states can be characterized by their chiral edge modes. Upon softening the edge potential, the edge has long been known to undergo spontaneous reconstruction driven by charging effects. In this paper we demonstrate a qualitatively distinct phenomenon driven by exchange effects, in which the ordering of the edge modes at $ν=3$ switches abruptly as the edge potential is made softer, while the ordering in the bulk remains intact. We demonstrate that this phenomenon is robust, and has many verifiable experimental signatures in transport.

Transport in a disordered $ν=2/3$ fractional quantum Hall junction

Electric and thermal transport properties of a $ν=2/3$ fractional quantum Hall junction are analyzed. We investigate the evolution of the electric and thermal two-terminal conductances, $G$ and $G^Q$, with system size $L$ and temperature $T$. This is done both for the case of strong interaction between the 1 and 1/ 3 modes (when the low-temperature physics of the interacting segment of the device is controlled by the vicinity of the strong-disorder Kane-Fisher-Polchinski fixed point) and for relatively weak interaction, for which the disorder is irrelevant at $T=0$ in the renormalization-group sense. The transport properties in both cases are similar in several respects. In particular, $G(L)$ is close to 4/3 (in units of $e^2/h$) and $G^Q$ to 2 (in units of $πT / 6 \hbar$) for small $L$, independently of the interaction strength. For large $L$ the system is in an incoherent regime, with $G$ given by 2/3 and $G^Q$ showing the Ohmic scaling, $G^Q\propto 1/L$, again for any interaction strength. The hallmark of the strong-disorder fixed point is the emergence of an intermediate range of $L$, in which the electric conductance shows strong mesoscopic fluctuations and the thermal conductance is $G^Q=1$. The analysis is extended also to a device with floating 1/3 mode, as studied in a recent experiment [A. Grivnin et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 266803 (2014)].

Suppression of interference in quantum Hall Mach-Zehnder geometry by upstream neutral modes

Mach-Zehnder interferometry has been proposed as a probe for detecting the statistics of anyonic quasiparticles in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states. Here we focus on interferometers made of multimode edge states with upstream modes. We find that the interference visibility is suppressed due to downstream-upstream mode entanglement; the latter serves as a "which path" detector to the downstream interfering trajectories. Our analysis tackles a concrete realization of filling factor 2/3, but its applicability goes beyond that specific case, and encompasses the recent observation of ubiquitous emergence of upstream neutral modes in FQH states. The latter, according to our analysis, goes hand in hand with the failure to observe Mach-Zehnder anyonic interference in fractional states. We point out how charge-neutral mode disentanglement will resuscitate the interference signal.

Strong non-equilibrium effects in spin torque systems

We consider a problem of persistent magnetization precession in a single domain ferromagnetic nano particle under the driving by the spin-transfer torque. We find that the adjustment of the electronic distribution function in the particle renders this state unstable. Instead, abrupt switching of the spin orientation is predicted upon increase of the spin-transfer torque current. On the technical level, we derive an effective action of the type of Ambegaokar-Eckern-Schön action for the coupled dynamics of magnetization (gauge group $SU(2)$) and voltage (gauge group $U(1)$).

A New Paradigm for Edge Reconstruction in Fractional Quantum Hall States

Questions on the nature of edge reconstruction and "where does the current flow" in the quantum Hall effect (QHE) have been debated for years. Moreover, the recent observation of proliferation of "upstream" neutral modes in the fractional QHE raised doubts about the present models of edge channels. In this article we focus on hole-conjugate states, nu=2/3 and nu=3/5, and present a new picture of their edge reconstruction. For example, while the present model for nu=2/3 consists of a single downstream charge channel with conductance 2/3 e^2/h and an upstream neutral mode, we show that the current is carried by two separate downstream edge channels, each with conductance 1/3 e^2/h, accompanied by upstream neutral mode(s). We find that if the two downstream channels are not equilibrated, inter-mode equilibration (via particle exchange) takes place over a distance of microns, with the two channels effectively behaving as a single channel. Moreover, the inter-channel equilibration is accompanied by an excitation of upstream neutral modes. In turn, the counter-propagating neutral modes, moving in close proximity to the charge modes, fragment into propagating charges, inducing thus downstream current fluctuations with zero net current - a novel mechanism for non-equilibrium noise. This unexpected edge reconstruction underlines the need for better understanding of edge reconstruction and energy transport in all fractional QHE states.

New Paradigm for Edge Reconstruction of Fractional States: Part Two - Noise

The recent, unexpected, findings of upstream neutral modes in particle-like fractional quantum Hall states, led to a realization that the nature of the neutral modes is far from being understood. Moreover, the observation of spatially separated of (at least) two downstream charge modes in hole-conjugate states (see Part One - Conductance), still faces unresolved contradictions between conductance and noise measurements. In this work we show how current fluctuations measured in various configurations shed light on the interplay between neutral and charge modes. We demonstrate that once one of the charge modes is taken out of equilibrium, counter-propagating neutral modes born in the equilibration process affect the upstream charge modes, giving rise to a novel mechanism for shot noise with quantized Fano factors. We present a theoretical model that accounts for most of the experimental observations.
