How to Extend 3D GBSM to Integrated Sensing and Communication Channel with Sharing Feature?

Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) is a promising technology in 6G systems. The existing 3D Geometry-Based Stochastic Model (GBSM), as standardized for 5G systems, addresses solely communication channels and lacks consideration of the integration with sensing channel. Therefore, this letter extends 3D GBSM to support ISAC research, with a particular focus on capturing the sharing feature of both channels, including shared scatterers, clusters, paths, and similar propagation param-eters, which have been experimentally verified in the literature. The proposed approach can be summarized as follows: Firstly, an ISAC channel model is proposed, where shared and non-shared components are superimposed for both communication and sensing. Secondly, sensing channel is characterized as a cascade of TX-target, radar cross section, and target-RX, with the introduction of a novel parameter S for shared target extraction. Finally, an ISAC channel implementation framework is proposed, allowing flexible configuration of sharing feature and the joint generation of communication and sensing channels. The proposed ISAC channel model can be compatible with the 3GPP standards and offers promising support for ISAC technology evaluation.

EALM: Introducing Multidimensional Ethical Alignment in Conversational Information Retrieval

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies should adhere to human norms to better serve our society and avoid disseminating harmful or misleading information, particularly in Conversational Information Retrieval (CIR). Previous work, including approaches and datasets, has not always been successful or sufficiently robust in taking human norms into consideration. To this end, we introduce a workflow that integrates ethical alignment, with an initial ethical judgment stage for efficient data screening. To address the need for ethical judgment in CIR, we present the QA-ETHICS dataset, adapted from the ETHICS benchmark, which serves as an evaluation tool by unifying scenarios and label meanings. However, each scenario only considers one ethical concept. Therefore, we introduce the MP-ETHICS dataset to evaluate a scenario under multiple ethical concepts, such as justice and Deontology. In addition, we suggest a new approach that achieves top performance in both binary and multi-label ethical judgment tasks. Our research provides a practical method for introducing ethical alignment into the CIR workflow. The data and code are available at https://github.com/wanng-ide/ealm .

Synthetic Speech Detection Based on Temporal Consistency and Distribution of Speaker Features

Current synthetic speech detection (SSD) methods perform well on certain datasets but still face issues of robustness and interpretability. A possible reason is that these methods do not analyze the deficiencies of synthetic speech. In this paper, the flaws of the speaker features inherent in the text-to-speech (TTS) process are analyzed. Differences in the temporal consistency of intra-utterance speaker features arise due to the lack of fine-grained control over speaker features in TTS. Since the speaker representations in TTS are based on speaker embeddings extracted by encoders, the distribution of inter-utterance speaker features differs between synthetic and bonafide speech. Based on these analyzes, an SSD method based on temporal consistency and distribution of speaker features is proposed. On one hand, modeling the temporal consistency of intra-utterance speaker features can aid speech anti-spoofing. On the other hand, distribution differences in inter-utterance speaker features can be utilized for SSD. The proposed method offers low computational complexity and performs well in both cross-dataset and silence trimming scenarios.

The Impact of Silence on Speech Anti-Spoofing

The current speech anti-spoofing countermeasures (CMs) show excellent performance on specific datasets. However, removing the silence of test speech through Voice Activity Detection (VAD) can severely degrade performance. In this paper, the impact of silence on speech anti-spoofing is analyzed. First, the reasons for the impact are explored, including the proportion of silence duration and the content of silence. The proportion of silence duration in spoof speech generated by text-to-speech (TTS) algorithms is lower than that in bonafide speech. And the content of silence generated by different waveform generators varies compared to bonafide speech. Then the impact of silence on model prediction is explored. Even after retraining, the spoof speech generated by neural network based end-to-end TTS algorithms suffers a significant rise in error rates when the silence is removed. To demonstrate the reasons for the impact of silence on CMs, the attention distribution of a CM is visualized through class activation mapping (CAM). Furthermore, the implementation and analysis of the experiments masking silence or non-silence demonstrates the significance of the proportion of silence duration for detecting TTS and the importance of silence content for detecting voice conversion (VC). Based on the experimental results, improving the robustness of CMs against unknown spoofing attacks by masking silence is also proposed. Finally, the attacks on anti-spoofing CMs through concatenating silence, and the mitigation of VAD and silence attack through low-pass filtering are introduced.

One-Class Knowledge Distillation for Spoofing Speech Detection

The detection of spoofing speech generated by unseen algorithms remains an unresolved challenge. One reason for the lack of generalization ability is traditional detecting systems follow the binary classification paradigm, which inherently assumes the possession of prior knowledge of spoofing speech. One-class methods attempt to learn the distribution of bonafide speech and are inherently suited to the task where spoofing speech exhibits significant differences. However, training a one-class system using only bonafide speech is challenging. In this paper, we introduce a teacher-student framework to provide guidance for the training of a one-class model. The proposed one-class knowledge distillation method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods on the ASVspoof 21DF dataset and InTheWild dataset, which demonstrates its superior generalization ability.

You talk what you read: Understanding News Comment Behavior by Dispositional and Situational Attribution

Many news comment mining studies are based on the assumption that comment is explicitly linked to the corresponding news. In this paper, we observed that users' comments are also heavily influenced by their individual characteristics embodied by the interaction history. Therefore, we position to understand news comment behavior by considering both the dispositional factors from news interaction history, and the situational factors from corresponding news. A three-part encoder-decoder framework is proposed to model the generative process of news comment. The resultant dispositional and situational attribution contributes to understanding user focus and opinions, which are validated in applications of reader-aware news summarization and news aspect-opinion forecasting.

Background-Mixed Augmentation for Weakly Supervised Change Detection

Change detection (CD) is to decouple object changes (i.e., object missing or appearing) from background changes (i.e., environment variations) like light and season variations in two images captured in the same scene over a long time span, presenting critical applications in disaster management, urban development, etc. In particular, the endless patterns of background changes require detectors to have a high generalization against unseen environment variations, making this task significantly challenging. Recent deep learning-based methods develop novel network architectures or optimization strategies with paired-training examples, which do not handle the generalization issue explicitly and require huge manual pixel-level annotation efforts. In this work, for the first attempt in the CD community, we study the generalization issue of CD from the perspective of data augmentation and develop a novel weakly supervised training algorithm that only needs image-level labels. Different from general augmentation techniques for classification, we propose the background-mixed augmentation that is specifically designed for change detection by augmenting examples under the guidance of a set of background-changing images and letting deep CD models see diverse environment variations. Moreover, we propose the augmented & real data consistency loss that encourages the generalization increase significantly. Our method as a general framework can enhance a wide range of existing deep learning-based detectors. We conduct extensive experiments in two public datasets and enhance four state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating the advantages of our method. We release the code at https://github.com/tsingqguo/bgmix.

DataAI-6G: A System Parameters Configurable Channel Dataset for AI-6G Research

With the acceleration of the commercialization of fifth generation (5G) mobile communication technology and the research for 6G communication systems, the communication system has the characteristics of high frequency, multi-band, high speed movement of users and large antenna array. These bring many difficulties to obtain accurate channel state information (CSI), which makes the performance of traditional communication methods be greatly restricted. Therefore, there has been a lot of interest in using artificial intelligence (AI) instead of traditional methods to improve performance. A common and accurate dataset is essential for the research of AI communication. However, the common datasets nowadays still lack some important features, such as mobile features, spatial non-stationary features etc. To address these issues, we give a dataset for future 6G communication. In this dataset, we address these issues with specific simulation methods and accompanying code processing.

UniEX: An Effective and Efficient Framework for Unified Information Extraction via a Span-extractive Perspective

We propose a new paradigm for universal information extraction (IE) that is compatible with any schema format and applicable to a list of IE tasks, such as named entity recognition, relation extraction, event extraction and sentiment analysis. Our approach converts the text-based IE tasks as the token-pair problem, which uniformly disassembles all extraction targets into joint span detection, classification and association problems with a unified extractive framework, namely UniEX. UniEX can synchronously encode schema-based prompt and textual information, and collaboratively learn the generalized knowledge from pre-defined information using the auto-encoder language models. We develop a traffine attention mechanism to integrate heterogeneous factors including tasks, labels and inside tokens, and obtain the extraction target via a scoring matrix. Experiment results show that UniEX can outperform generative universal IE models in terms of performance and inference-speed on $14$ benchmarks IE datasets with the supervised setting. The state-of-the-art performance in low-resource scenarios also verifies the transferability and effectiveness of UniEX.

NER-to-MRC: Named-Entity Recognition Completely Solving as Machine Reading Comprehension

Named-entity recognition (NER) detects texts with predefined semantic labels and is an essential building block for natural language processing (NLP). Notably, recent NER research focuses on utilizing massive extra data, including pre-training corpora and incorporating search engines. However, these methods suffer from high costs associated with data collection and pre-training, and additional training process of the retrieved data from search engines. To address the above challenges, we completely frame NER as a machine reading comprehension (MRC) problem, called NER-to-MRC, by leveraging MRC with its ability to exploit existing data efficiently. Several prior works have been dedicated to employing MRC-based solutions for tackling the NER problem, several challenges persist: i) the reliance on manually designed prompts; ii) the limited MRC approaches to data reconstruction, which fails to achieve performance on par with methods utilizing extensive additional data. Thus, our NER-to-MRC conversion consists of two components: i) transform the NER task into a form suitable for the model to solve with MRC in a efficient manner; ii) apply the MRC reasoning strategy to the model. We experiment on 6 benchmark datasets from three domains and achieve state-of-the-art performance without external data, up to 11.24% improvement on the WNUT-16 dataset.

OASIS: Automated Assessment of Urban Pedestrian Paths at Scale

The inspection of the Public Right of Way (PROW) for accessibility barriers is necessary for monitoring and maintaining the built environment for communities' walkability, rollability, safety, active transportation, and sustainability. However, an inspection of the PROW, by surveyors or crowds, is laborious, inconsistent, costly, and unscalable. The core of smart city developments involves the application of information technologies toward municipal assets assessment and management. Sidewalks, in comparison to automobile roads, have not been regularly integrated into information systems to optimize or inform civic services. We develop an Open Automated Sidewalks Inspection System (OASIS), a free and open-source automated mapping system, to extract sidewalk network data using mobile physical devices. OASIS leverages advances in neural networks, image sensing, location-based methods, and compact hardware to perform sidewalk segmentation and mapping along with the identification of barriers to generate a GIS pedestrian transportation layer that is available for routing as well as analytic and operational reports. We describe a prototype system trained and tested with imagery collected in real-world settings, alongside human surveyors who are part of the local transit pathway review team. Pilots show promising precision and recall for path mapping (0.94, 0.98 respectively). Moreover, surveyor teams' functional efficiency increased in the field. By design, OASIS takes adoption aspects into consideration to ensure the system could be easily integrated with governmental pathway review teams' workflows, and that the outcome data would be interoperable with public data commons.

StyleAvatar: Real-time Photo-realistic Portrait Avatar from a Single Video

Face reenactment methods attempt to restore and re-animate portrait videos as realistically as possible. Existing methods face a dilemma in quality versus controllability: 2D GAN-based methods achieve higher image quality but suffer in fine-grained control of facial attributes compared with 3D counterparts. In this work, we propose StyleAvatar, a real-time photo-realistic portrait avatar reconstruction method using StyleGAN-based networks, which can generate high-fidelity portrait avatars with faithful expression control. We expand the capabilities of StyleGAN by introducing a compositional representation and a sliding window augmentation method, which enable faster convergence and improve translation generalization. Specifically, we divide the portrait scenes into three parts for adaptive adjustments: facial region, non-facial foreground region, and the background. Besides, our network leverages the best of UNet, StyleGAN and time coding for video learning, which enables high-quality video generation. Furthermore, a sliding window augmentation method together with a pre-training strategy are proposed to improve translation generalization and training performance, respectively. The proposed network can converge within two hours while ensuring high image quality and a forward rendering time of only 20 milliseconds. Furthermore, we propose a real-time live system, which further pushes research into applications. Results and experiments demonstrate the superiority of our method in terms of image quality, full portrait video generation, and real-time re-animation compared to existing facial reenactment methods. Fengshenbang 1.0: Being the Foundation of Chinese Cognitive Intelligence

Nowadays, foundation models become one of fundamental infrastructures in artificial intelligence, paving ways to the general intelligence. However, the reality presents two urgent challenges: existing foundation models are dominated by the English-language community; users are often given limited resources and thus cannot always use foundation models. To support the development of the Chinese-language community, we introduce an open-source project, called Fengshenbang, which leads by the research center for Cognitive Computing and Natural Language (CCNL). Our project has comprehensive capabilities, including large pre-trained models, user-friendly APIs, benchmarks, datasets, and others. We wrap all these in three sub-projects: the Fengshenbang Model, the Fengshen Framework, and the Fengshen Benchmark. An open-source roadmap, Fengshenbang, aims to re-evaluate the open-source community of Chinese pre-trained large-scale models, prompting the development of the entire Chinese large-scale model community. We also want to build a user-centered open-source ecosystem to allow individuals to access the desired models to match their computing resources. Furthermore, we invite companies, colleges, and research institutions to collaborate with us to build the large-scale open-source model-based ecosystem. We hope that this project will be the foundation of Chinese cognitive intelligence.

How to Extend 3D GBSM to RIS Cascade Channel with Non-ideal Phase Modulation?

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is envisioned as a promising technology for next-generation wireless communications. Its deployment introduces a RIS cascade link between the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx), which makes its channel model significantly different from the Tx-Rx direct link. In this letter, a RIS cascade channel modeling method based on a 3D geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) is proposed. The model follows a 3GPP standardized modeling framework and extends the traditional Tx-Rx channel to Tx-RIS-Rx cascade channel. In the modeling process, we consider the non-ideal phase modulation of the RIS element, so as to accurately characterize the dependence of its phase modulation on the incoming wave angle. The differences between the proposed cascade channel model and the channel model with ideal phase modulation are investigated. The simulation results show that the proposed model can better reflect the dependence of RIS on angle and polarization.

APE: An Open and Shared Annotated Dataset for Learning Urban Pedestrian Path Networks

Inferring the full transportation network, including sidewalks and cycleways, is crucial for many automated systems, including autonomous driving, multi-modal navigation, trip planning, mobility simulations, and freight management. Many transportation decisions can be informed based on an accurate pedestrian network, its interactions, and connectivity with the road networks of other modes of travel. A connected pedestrian path network is vital to transportation activities, as sidewalks and crossings connect pedestrians to other modes of transportation. However, information about these paths' location and connectivity is often missing or inaccurate in city planning systems and wayfinding applications, causing severe information gaps and errors for planners and pedestrians. This work begins to address this problem at scale by introducing a novel dataset of aerial satellite imagery, street map imagery, and rasterized annotations of sidewalks, crossings, and corner bulbs in urban cities. The dataset spans $2,700 km^2$ land area, covering select regions from $6$ different cities. It can be used for various learning tasks related to segmenting and understanding pedestrian environments. We also present an end-to-end process for inferring a connected pedestrian path network map using street network information and our proposed dataset. The process features the use of a multi-input segmentation network trained on our dataset to predict important classes in the pedestrian environment and then generate a connected pedestrian path network. Our results demonstrate that the dataset is sufficiently large to train common segmentation models yielding accurate, robust pedestrian path networks.

Rethinking Semantic Segmentation Evaluation for Explainability and Model Selection

Semantic segmentation aims to robustly predict coherent class labels for entire regions of an image. It is a scene understanding task that powers real-world applications (e.g., autonomous navigation). One important application, the use of imagery for automated semantic understanding of pedestrian environments, provides remote mapping of accessibility features in street environments. This application (and others like it) require detailed geometric information of geographical objects. Semantic segmentation is a prerequisite for this task since it maps contiguous regions of the same class as single entities. Importantly, semantic segmentation uses like ours are not pixel-wise outcomes; however, most of their quantitative evaluation metrics (e.g., mean Intersection Over Union) are based on pixel-wise similarities to a ground-truth, which fails to emphasize over- and under-segmentation properties of a segmentation model. Here, we introduce a new metric to assess region-based over- and under-segmentation. We analyze and compare it to other metrics, demonstrating that the use of our metric lends greater explainability to semantic segmentation model performance in real-world applications.

Capacity Analysis of Holographic MIMO Channels with Practical Constraints

Holographic Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) is envisioned as a promising technology to realize unprecedented spectral efficiency by integrating a large number of antennas into a compact space. Most research on holographic MIMO is based on isotropic scattering environments, and the antenna gain is assumed to be unlimited by deployment space. However, the channel might not satisfy isotropic scattering because of generalized angle distributions, and the antenna gain is limited by the array aperture in reality. In this letter, we aim to analyze the holographic MIMO channel capacity under practical angle distribution and array aperture constraints. First, we calculate the spectral density for generalized angle distributions by introducing a wavenumber domain-based method. And then, the capacity under generalized angle distributions is analyzed and two different aperture schemes are considered. Finally, numerical results show that the capacity is obviously affected by angle distribution at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) but hardly affected at low SNR, and the capacity will not increase infinitely with antenna density due to the array aperture constraint.

SrTR: Self-reasoning Transformer with Visual-linguistic Knowledge for Scene Graph Generation

Objects in a scene are not always related. The execution efficiency of the one-stage scene graph generation approaches are quite high, which infer the effective relation between entity pairs using sparse proposal sets and a few queries. However, they only focus on the relation between subject and object in triplet set subject entity, predicate entity, object entity, ignoring the relation between subject and predicate or predicate and object, and the model lacks self-reasoning ability. In addition, linguistic modality has been neglected in the one-stage method. It is necessary to mine linguistic modality knowledge to improve model reasoning ability. To address the above-mentioned shortcomings, a Self-reasoning Transformer with Visual-linguistic Knowledge (SrTR) is proposed to add flexible self-reasoning ability to the model. An encoder-decoder architecture is adopted in SrTR, and a self-reasoning decoder is developed to complete three inferences of the triplet set, s+o-p, s+p-o and p+o-s. Inspired by the large-scale pre-training image-text foundation models, visual-linguistic prior knowledge is introduced and a visual-linguistic alignment strategy is designed to project visual representations into semantic spaces with prior knowledge to aid relational reasoning. Experiments on the Visual Genome dataset demonstrate the superiority and fast inference ability of the proposed method.
