James Webb Space Telescope Observations of the Nearby and Precisely-Localized FRB 20250316A: A Potential Near-IR Counterpart and Implications for the Progenitors of Fast Radio Bursts

We present deep James Webb Space Telescope near-infrared imaging to search for a quiescent or transient counterpart to FRB 20250316A, which was precisely localized with the CHIME/FRB Outriggers array to an area of $11\times13$ pc in the outer regions of NGC 4141 at $d\approx40$ Mpc. Our F150W2 image reveals a faint source near the center of the FRB localization region ("NIR-1"; $M_{\rm F150W2}\approx-2.5$ mag; probability of chance coincidence $\approx0.36$), the only source within $\approx2.7σ$. We find that it is too faint to be a globular cluster, young star cluster, red supergiant star, or a giant star near the tip of the red giant branch (RGB). It is instead consistent with a red giant near the RGB "clump" or a massive ($\gtrsim20$ M$_{\odot}$) main sequence star, although the latter explanation is less likely. The source is too bright to be a supernova remnant, Crab-like pulsar wind nebula, or isolated magnetar. Alternatively, NIR-1 may represent transient emission, namely a dust echo from an energetic outburst associated with the FRB, in which case we would expect it to fade in future observations. We explore the stellar population near the FRB and find that it is composed of a mix of young massive stars ($\sim10-100$ Myr) in a nearby HII region that extends to the location of FRB 20250316A, and old evolved stars ($\gtrsim$ Gyr). The overlap with a young stellar population, containing stars of up to $\approx20$ M$_\odot$, may implicate a neutron star / magnetar produced in the core collapse of a massive star as the source of FRB 20250316A.

Discovery and Localization of the Swift-Observed FRB 20241228A in a Star-forming Host Galaxy

On 2024 December 28, CHIME/FRB detected the thus-far non-repeating FRB 20241228A with a real-time signal-to-noise ratio of $>50$. Approximately 112~s later, the X-ray Telescope onboard the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory was on source, the fastest follow-up to-date of a non-repeating FRB (Tohuvavohu et al. in prep.). Using CHIME/FRB and two of the three CHIME/FRB Outriggers, we obtained a Very Long Baseline Interferometry localization for FRB 20241228A with a 1$σ$ confidence ellipse of 11$^{\prime\prime}$ by 0.2$^{\prime\prime}$. This represents the first published localization using both the CHIME-KKO and CHIME-GBO Outriggers. We associate FRB 20241228A with a star-forming galaxy at a redshift of $z = 0.1614\pm0.0002$. The persistent X-ray luminosity limit at this source's location and distance is $<1.2 \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the $0.3-10$ keV band, the most stringent limit of any non-repeating FRB to-date (Tohuvavohu et al. in prep.). The stellar mass ($\sim 2.6 \times 10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$) and star formation rate ($\sim 2.9\,M_{\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$) of the host galaxy of FRB 20241228A are consistent with the broader FRB host galaxy population. We measure significant scattering ($\sim$1ms) and scintillation ($\sim$20 kHz at 600 MHz) along the line of sight to this source, and suggest the scintillation screen is Galactic while the scattering screen is extragalactic. FRB 20241228A represents an exciting example of a new era in which we can harness VLBI-localizations and rapid high-energy follow-up to probe FRB progenitors.

Understanding Task Vectors in In-Context Learning: Emergence, Functionality, and Limitations

Task vectors offer a compelling mechanism for accelerating inference in in-context learning (ICL) by distilling task-specific information into a single, reusable representation. Despite their empirical success, the underlying principles governing their emergence and functionality remain unclear. This work proposes the Linear Combination Conjecture, positing that task vectors act as single in-context demonstrations formed through linear combinations of the original ones. We provide both theoretical and empirical support for this conjecture. First, we show that task vectors naturally emerge in linear transformers trained on triplet-formatted prompts through loss landscape analysis. Next, we predict the failure of task vectors on representing high-rank mappings and confirm this on practical LLMs. Our findings are further validated through saliency analyses and parameter visualization, suggesting an enhancement of task vectors by injecting multiple ones into few-shot prompts. Together, our results advance the understanding of task vectors and shed light on the mechanisms underlying ICL in transformer-based models.

On $\overline{\partial }_{b}$-harmonic maps from pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to Kähler manifolds

In this paper, we consider maps from pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to Kähler manifolds and introduce partial energy functionals for these maps. First, we obtain a foliated Lichnerowicz type result on general pseudo-Hermitian manifolds, which generalizes a related result on Sasakian manifolds in \cite{SSZ2013holomorphic}. Next, we investigate critical maps of the partial energy functionals, which are referred to as $\overline{\partial }_{b}$-harmonic maps and $\partial _{b}$-harmonic maps. We give a foliated result for both $\overline{\partial }_{b}$- and $\partial _{b}$-harmonic maps, generalizing a foliated result of Petit \cite{Pet2002harmonic} for harmonic maps. Then we are able to generalize Siu's holomorphicity result for harmonic maps \cite{Siu1980rigid} to the case for $\overline{\partial }_{b}$- and $\partial _{b}$-harmonic maps.

On critical maps of the horizontal energy functional between Riemannian foliations

In this paper, we consider critical points of the horizontal energy $E_{\HH}(f)$ for a smooth map $f$ between two Riemannian foliations. These critical points are referred to as horizontally harmonic maps. In particular, if the maps are foliated, they become transversally harmonic maps. By utilizing the stress-energy tensor, we establish some monotonicity formulas for horizontally harmonic maps from Euclidean spaces, the quotients $K_{m}$ of Heisenberg groups and also for transversally harmonic maps from Riemannian foliations with appropriate curvature pinching conditions. Finally, we give Jin-type theorems for either horizontally harmonic maps or transversally harmonic maps under some asymptotic conditions at infinity.

A Catalog of Local Universe Fast Radio Bursts from CHIME/FRB and the KKO Outrigger

We present the first catalog of fast radio burst (FRB) host galaxies from CHIME/FRB Outriggers, selected uniformly in the radio and the optical by localizing 81 new bursts to 2'' x ~60'' accuracy using CHIME and the KKO Outrigger, located 66 km from CHIME. Of the 81 localized bursts, we use the Probabilistic Association of Transients to their Hosts (PATH) algorithm to securely identify 21 new FRB host galaxies, and compile spectroscopic redshifts for 19 systems, 15 of which are newly obtained via spectroscopic observations. The most nearby source is FRB 20231229A, at a distance of 90 Mpc. One burst in our sample is from a previously reported repeating source in a galaxy merger (FRB 20190303A). Three new FRB host galaxies (FRBs 20230203A, 20230703A, and 20231206A) are found towards X-ray and optically selected galaxy clusters, potentially doubling the sample of known galaxy cluster FRBs. A search for radio counterparts reveals that FRB 20231128A is associated with a luminous persistent radio source (PRS) candidate with high significance ($P_{cc} \sim 10^{-2}$). If its compactness is confirmed, it would be the nearest known compact PRS at $z = 0.1079$. Our catalog significantly increases the statistics of the Macquart relation at low redshifts ($z < 0.2$). In the near future, the completed CHIME/FRB Outriggers array will produce hundreds of FRBs localized with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). This will significantly expand the known sample and pave the way for future telescopes relying on VLBI for FRB localization.

Phantom Events: Demystifying the Issues of Log Forgery in Blockchain

With the rapid development of blockchain technology, transaction logs play a central role in various applications, including decentralized exchanges, wallets, cross-chain bridges, and other third-party services. However, these logs, particularly those based on smart contract events, are highly susceptible to manipulation and forgery, creating substantial security risks across the ecosystem. To address this issue, we present the first in-depth security analysis of transaction log forgery in EVM-based blockchains, a phenomenon we term Phantom Events. We systematically model five types of attacks and propose a tool designed to detect event forgery vulnerabilities in smart contracts. Our evaluation demonstrates that our approach outperforms existing tools in identifying potential phantom events. Furthermore, we have successfully identified real-world instances for all five types of attacks across multiple decentralized applications. Finally, we call on community developers to take proactive steps to address these critical security vulnerabilities.

Towards the Generalization of Multi-view Learning: An Information-theoretical Analysis

Multiview learning has drawn widespread attention for its efficacy in leveraging cross-view consensus and complementarity information to achieve a comprehensive representation of data. While multi-view learning has undergone vigorous development and achieved remarkable success, the theoretical understanding of its generalization behavior remains elusive. This paper aims to bridge this gap by developing information-theoretic generalization bounds for multi-view learning, with a particular focus on multi-view reconstruction and classification tasks. Our bounds underscore the importance of capturing both consensus and complementary information from multiple different views to achieve maximally disentangled representations. These results also indicate that applying the multi-view information bottleneck regularizer is beneficial for satisfactory generalization performance. Additionally, we derive novel data-dependent bounds under both leave-one-out and supersample settings, yielding computational tractable and tighter bounds. In the interpolating regime, we further establish the fast-rate bound for multi-view learning, exhibiting a faster convergence rate compared to conventional square-root bounds. Numerical results indicate a strong correlation between the true generalization gap and the derived bounds across various learning scenarios.

Stock Type Prediction Model Based on Hierarchical Graph Neural Network

This paper introduces a novel approach to stock data analysis by employing a Hierarchical Graph Neural Network (HGNN) model that captures multi-level information and relational structures in the stock market. The HGNN model integrates stock relationship data and hierarchical attributes to predict stock types effectively. The paper discusses the construction of a stock industry relationship graph and the extraction of temporal information from historical price sequences. It also highlights the design of a graph convolution operation and a temporal attention aggregator to model the macro market state. The integration of these features results in a comprehensive stock prediction model that addresses the challenges of utilizing stock relationship data and modeling hierarchical attributes in the stock market.

On the H-atom abstractions from C1-C4 alcohols, aldehydes, and ethers by NO2: ab initio and comprehensive kinetic modeling

As crucial additives and intermediate, alcohols, ethers, and aldehydes play a significant role in the combustion process. However, the chemistry of NOXhydrocarbon interactions and the rate rules governing these interactions remain largely unexplored in this combustion system. To address this gap, this study provides a comprehensive investigation of H-atom abstraction by NO2 from C1-C4 alcohols, aldehydes and ethers that leads to the formation of 3 HNO2 isomers (i.e., transHONO, HNO2, and cisHONO), encompassing 9 hydrocarbons and 45 reactions. Utilizing the DLPNO CCSD(T)cc pVDZ M06 2X 6 311g d,p method, the electronic structures, single point energies, C H bond dissociation energies and 1 D hindered rotor potentials of the reactants, transition states, complexes and products in each reaction are computed. Adding these H atom abstractions to the chemical kinetic model improves the model reactivity and advances the ignition, as indicated by the reduction in ignition delay time for species that initially lacked these reactions. Further sensitivity and flux analyses highlight the crucial role of H atom abstraction by NO2. The findings underscore the importance of accurately incorporating these kinetic parameters into newly developed chemical models for alcohols, aldehydes, and ethers. Additionally, the study highlights the need for future experimental efforts to investigate the effects of NO2 on the combustion systems of these compounds.

Advanced RAG Models with Graph Structures: Optimizing Complex Knowledge Reasoning and Text Generation

This study aims to optimize the existing retrieval-augmented generation model (RAG) by introducing a graph structure to improve the performance of the model in dealing with complex knowledge reasoning tasks. The traditional RAG model has the problem of insufficient processing efficiency when facing complex graph structure information (such as knowledge graphs, hierarchical relationships, etc.), which affects the quality and consistency of the generated results. This study proposes a scheme to process graph structure data by combining graph neural network (GNN), so that the model can capture the complex relationship between entities, thereby improving the knowledge consistency and reasoning ability of the generated text. The experiment used the Natural Questions (NQ) dataset and compared it with multiple existing generation models. The results show that the graph-based RAG model proposed in this paper is superior to the traditional generation model in terms of quality, knowledge consistency, and reasoning ability, especially when dealing with tasks that require multi-dimensional reasoning. Through the combination of the enhancement of the retrieval module and the graph neural network, the model in this study can better handle complex knowledge background information and has broad potential value in multiple practical application scenarios.

A Repeating Fast Radio Burst Source in a Low-Luminosity Dwarf Galaxy

We present the localization and host galaxy of FRB 20190208A, a repeating source of fast radio bursts (FRBs) discovered using CHIME/FRB. As part of the PRECISE repeater localization program on the EVN, we monitored FRB 20190208A for 65.6 hours at $\sim1.4$ GHz and detected a single burst, which led to its VLBI localization with 260 mas uncertainty (2$σ$). Follow-up optical observations with the MMT Observatory ($i\gtrsim 25.7$ mag (AB)) found no visible host at the FRB position. Subsequent deeper observations with the GTC, however, revealed an extremely faint galaxy ($r=27.32 \pm0.16$ mag), very likely ($99.95 \%$) associated with FRB 20190208A. Given the dispersion measure of the FRB ($\sim580$ pc cm$^{-3}$), even the most conservative redshift estimate ($z_{\mathrm{max}}\sim0.83$) implies that this is the lowest-luminosity FRB host to date ($\lesssim10^8L_{\odot}$), even less luminous than the dwarf host of FRB 20121102A. We investigate how localization precision and the depth of optical imaging affect host association, and discuss the implications of such a low-luminosity dwarf galaxy. Unlike the other repeaters with low-luminosity hosts, FRB 20190208A has a modest Faraday rotation measure of a few tens of rad m$^{-2}$, and EVN plus VLA observations reveal no associated compact persistent radio source. We also monitored FRB 20190208A for 40.4 hours over 2 years as part of the ÉCLAT repeating FRB monitoring campaign on the Nançay Radio Telescope, and detected one burst. Our results demonstrate that, in some cases, the robust association of an FRB with a host galaxy will require both high localization precision, as well as deep optical follow-up.

Investigation of real-fluid effects on NH$_3$ oxidation and blending characteristics at supercritical conditions via high-order Virial equation of state coupled with ab initio intermolecular potentials

Significant efforts have been committed to understanding the fundamental combustion chemistry of ammonia at high-pressure and low-temperature conditions with or without blending with other fuels, as these are promising to improve ammonia combustion performance and reduce NOx emission. A commonly used fundamental reactor is the jet-stirred reactor (JSR). However, modeling of high-pressure JSR experiments have been conducted assuming complete ideal gas behaviors, which might lead to misinterpreted or completely wrong results. Therefore, this study proposes, for the first time, a novel framework coupling high-order Virial equation of state, ab initio multi-body intermolecular potential, and real-fluid governing equations. The framework is further applied to investigate NH$_3$ oxidation under supercritical conditions in jet-stirred reactors, where the real-fluid effects on NH$_3$ oxidation characteristics are quantified and compared, via simulated species profiles and relative changes in simulated mole fractions, at various temperatures, pressures, dilution ratios, equivalence ratios, and with or without blending with H$_2$ and CH$_4$. Strong promoting effects on NH$_3$ oxidation from real-fluid effects are revealed, with significant shifts in simulated species profiles observed for both fuel, intermediates and product species. Sensitivity analyses are also conducted based on the new framework, with diverse influences of real-fluid effects on the contributions of the most sensitive pathways highlighted. It is found that, without considering real-fluid behaviors, the error introduced in simulated species mole fractions can reach 85% at the conditions investigated in this study. Propagation of such levels of error to chemical kinetic mechanisms can disqualify them for any meaningful modeling work. These errors can now be excluded using the framework developed in this study.

On differential geometry of non-degenerate CR manifolds

In this paper, we consider a non-degenerate CR manifold (M,H(M),J) with a given pseudo-Hermitian 1-form θ, and endow the CR distribution H(M) with any Hermitian metric h instead of the Levi form L_{θ}. This induces a natural Riemannian metric g_{h,θ} on M compatible with the structure. The synthetic object (M,θ,J,h) will be called a pseudo-Hermitian manifold, which generalizes the usual notion of pseudo-Hermitian manifold (M,θ,J,L_{θ}) in the literature. Our purpose is to investigate the differential-geometric aspect of pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. By imitating Hermitian geometry, we find a canonical connection on (M,θ,J,h), which generalizes the Tanaka-Webster connection on (M,θ,J,L_{θ}). We define the pseudo-Kähler 2-form by g_{h,θ} and J; and introduce the notion of a pseudo-Kähler manifold, which is an analogue of a Kähler manifold. It turns out that (M,θ,J,L_{θ}) is pseudo-Kählerian. Using the structure equations of the canonical connection, we derive some curvature and torsion properties of a pseudo-Hermitian manifold, in particular of a pseudo-Kähler manifold. Then some known results in Riemannian geometry are generalized to the pseudo-Hermitian case. These results include some Cartan type results. As an application, we give a new proof for the classification of Sasakian space forms.

The Long-lived Broadband Afterglow of Short Gamma-Ray Burst 231117A and the Growing Radio-Detected Short GRB Population

We present multiwavelength observations of the Swift short $γ$-ray burst GRB 231117A, localized to an underlying galaxy at redshift $z = 0.257$ at a small projected offset ($\sim 2~$kpc). We uncover long-lived X-ray (Chandra) and radio/millimeter (VLA, MeerKAT, and ALMA) afterglow emission, detected to $\sim 37~$days and $\sim 20~$days (rest frame), respectively. We measure a wide jet ($\sim 10.4^\circ$) and relatively high circumburst density ($\sim 0.07~{\rm cm}^{-3}$) compared to the short GRB population. Our data cannot be easily fit with a standard forward shock model, but they are generally well fit with the incorporation of a refreshed forward shock and a reverse shock at $< 1~$day. We incorporate GRB 231117A into a larger sample of 132 X-ray detected events, 71 of which were radio-observed (17 cm-band detections), for a systematic study of the distributions of redshifts, jet and afterglow properties, galactocentric offsets, and local environments of events with and without detected radio afterglows. Compared to the entire short GRB population, the majority of radio-detected GRBs are at relatively low redshifts ($z < 0.6$) and have high circumburst densities ($> 10^{-2}~{\rm cm}^{-3}$), consistent with their smaller ($< 8~$kpc) projected galactocentric offsets. We additionally find that 70% of short GRBs with opening angle measurements were radio-detected, indicating the importance of radio afterglows in jet measurements, especially in the cases of wide ($> 10^\circ$) jets where observational evidence of collimation may only be detectable at radio wavelengths. Owing to improved observing strategies and the emergence of sensitive radio facilities, the number of radio-detected short GRBs has quadrupled in the past decade.

How Does Distribution Matching Help Domain Generalization: An Information-theoretic Analysis

Domain generalization aims to learn invariance across multiple training domains, thereby enhancing generalization against out-of-distribution data. While gradient or representation matching algorithms have achieved remarkable success, these methods generally lack generalization guarantees or depend on strong assumptions, leaving a gap in understanding the underlying mechanism of distribution matching. In this work, we formulate domain generalization from a novel probabilistic perspective, ensuring robustness while avoiding overly conservative solutions. Through comprehensive information-theoretic analysis, we provide key insights into the roles of gradient and representation matching in promoting generalization. Our results reveal the complementary relationship between these two components, indicating that existing works focusing solely on either gradient or representation alignment are insufficient to solve the domain generalization problem. In light of these theoretical findings, we introduce IDM to simultaneously align the inter-domain gradients and representations. Integrated with the proposed PDM method for complex distribution matching, IDM achieves superior performance over various baseline methods.

Mapping Obscured Star Formation in the Host Galaxy of FRB 20201124A

We present high-resolution 1.5 $-$ 6 GHz Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical and infrared observations of the extremely active repeating fast radio burst (FRB) FRB 20201124A and its barred spiral host galaxy. We constrain the location and morphology of star formation in the host and search for a persistent radio source (PRS) coincident with FRB 20201124A. We resolve the morphology of the radio emission across all frequency bands and measure a star formation rate SFR $\approx 8.9\,M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, approximately $\approx 2.5-6$ times larger than optically-inferred SFRs, demonstrating dust-obscured star formation throughout the host. Compared to a sample of all known FRB hosts with radio emission, the host of FRB 20201124A has the most significantly obscured star formation. While HST observations show the FRB to be offset from the bar or spiral arms, the radio emission extends to the FRB location. We propose that the FRB progenitor could have formed in situ (e.g., a magnetar born from a massive star explosion). It is still plausible, although less likely, that the progenitor of FRB 20201124A migrated from the central bar of the host. We further place a limit on the luminosity of a putative PRS at the FRB position of $L_{\rm 6.0 \ GHz}$ $\lesssim$ 1.8 $\times 10^{27}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$, among the deepest PRS luminosity limits to date. However, this limit is still broadly consistent with both magnetar nebulae and hypernebulae models assuming a constant energy injection rate of the magnetar and an age of $\gtrsim 10^{5}$ yr in each model, respectively.
