Generalized maximum principles and stochastic completeness for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds

In this paper, we establish a generalized maximum principle for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. As corollaries, Omori-Yau type maximum principles for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds are deduced. Moreover, we prove that the stochastic completeness for the heat semigroup generated by the sub-Laplacian is equivalent to the validity of a weak form of the generalized maximum principles. Finally, we give some applications of these generalized maximum principles.

The distant, galaxy cluster environment of the short GRB 161104A at $z\sim 0.8$ and a comparison to the short GRB host population

We present optical observations of the Swift short-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 161104A and its host galaxy at $z=0.793 \pm 0.003$. We model the multiband photometry and spectroscopy with the stellar population inference code Prospector, and explore the posterior using nested sampling. We find that the mass-weighted age $t_m = 2.12^{+0.23}_{-0.21}$~Gyr, stellar mass $\log{(M/M_\odot)} = 10.21 \pm 0.04$, metallicity $\log{(Z/Z_\odot)} = 0.08^{+0.05}_{-0.06}$, dust extinction $A_V = 0.08^{+0.08}_{-0.05}$ mag, and the star formation rate $\text{SFR} = 9.9 \times 10^{-2} M_\odot$~yr$^{-1}$. These properties, along with a prominent 4000 Angstrom break and optical absorption lines classify this host as an early-type, quiescent galaxy. Using Dark Energy Survey galaxy catalogues, we demonstrate that the host of GRB 161104A resides on the outskirts of a galaxy cluster at $z\approx 0.8$, situated $\approx 1$ Mpc from the likely brightest cluster galaxy. We also present new modeling for 20 additional short GRB hosts ($\approx33\%$ of which are early-type galaxies), finding population medians of $\log(M/M_\odot) = 9.94^{+0.88}_{-0.98}$ and $t_m = 1.07^{+1.98}_{-0.67}$~Gyr ($68\%$ confidence). We further find that the host of GRB 161104A is more distant, less massive, and younger than the four other short GRB hosts known to be associated with galaxy clusters. Cluster short GRBs have faint afterglows, in the lower $\approx 11\%$ ($\approx 30\%$) of observed X-ray (optical) luminosities. We place a lower limit on the fraction of short GRBs in galaxy clusters versus those in the field of $\approx 5-13\%$, consistent with the fraction of stellar mass $\approx 10-20\%$ in galaxy clusters at redshifts $0.1 \leq z \leq 0.8$.

Schwarz type lemmas for generalized holomorphic maps between pseudo-Hermitian manifolds and Hermitian manifolds

In this paper, we consider some generalized holomorphic maps between pseudo-Hermitian manifolds and Hermitian manifolds. By Bochner formulas and comparison theorems, we establish related Schwarz type results. As corollaries, Liouville theorem and little Picard theorem for basic CR functions are deduced. Finally, we study CR Carathéodory pseudodistance on CR manifolds.

OpenHI2 -- Open source histopathological image platform

Transition from conventional to digital pathology requires a new category of biomedical informatic infrastructure which could facilitate delicate pathological routine. Pathological diagnoses are sensitive to many external factors and is known to be subjective. Only systems that can meet strict requirements in pathology would be able to run along pathological routines and eventually digitized the study area, and the developed platform should comply with existing pathological routines and international standards. Currently, there are a number of available software tools which can perform histopathological tasks including virtual slide viewing, annotating, and basic image analysis, however, none of them can serve as a digital platform for pathology. Here we describe OpenHI2, an enhanced version Open Histopathological Image platform which is capable of supporting all basic pathological tasks and file formats; ready to be deployed in medical institutions on a standard server environment or cloud computing infrastructure. In this paper, we also describe the development decisions for the platform and propose solutions to overcome technical challenges so that OpenHI2 could be used as a platform for histopathological images. Further addition can be made to the platform since each component is modularized and fully documented. OpenHI2 is free, open-source, and available at https://gitlab.com/BioAI/OpenHI.

Gradient estimate and Liouville theorems for p-harmonic maps

In this paper, we first obtain an $L^q$ gradient estimate for $p$-harmonic maps, by assuming the target manifold supporting a certain function, whose gradient and Hessian satisfy some analysis conditions. From this $L^q$ gradient estimate, we get a corresponding Liouville type result for $p$-harmonic maps. Secondly, using these general results, we give various geometric applications to $p$-harmonic maps from complete manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature to manifolds with various upper bound on sectional curvature, under appropriate controlled images.

Schwarz type lemmas for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds

In this paper, we consider some generalized holomorphic maps between pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. These maps include the \emph{CR} maps and the transversally holomorphic maps. In terms of some sub-Laplacian or Hessian type Bochner formulas, and comparison theorems in the pseudo-Hermitian version, we are able to establish several Schwarz type results for both the \emph{CR} maps and the transversally holomorphic maps between pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. Finally, we also discuss the \emph{CR} hyperbolicity problem for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds.

Pseudo-Harmonic Maps From Complete Noncompact Pseudo-Hermitian Manifolds To Regular Balls

In this paper, we give an estimate of sub-Laplacian of Riemannian distance functions in pseudo-Hermitian geometry which plays a similar role as Laplacian comparison theorem in Riemannian geometry, and deduce a prior horizontal gradient estimate of pseudo-harmonic maps from pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to regular balls of Riemannian manifolds. As an application, Liouville theorem is established under the conditions of nonnegative pseudo-Hermitian Ricci curvature and vanishing pseudo-Hermitian torsion. Moreover, we obtain the existence of pseudo-harmonic maps from complete noncompact pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to regular balls of Riemannian manifolds.

Eells-Sampson type theorems for subelliptic harmonic maps from sub-Riemannian manifolds

In this paper, we consider critical maps of a horizontal energy functional for maps from a sub-Riemannian manifold to a Riemannian manifold. These critical maps are referred to as subelliptic harmonic maps. In terms of the subelliptic harmonic map heat flow, we investigate the existence problem for subelliptic harmonic maps. Under the assumption that the target Riemannian manifold has non-positive sectional curvature, we prove some Eells-Sampson type existence results for this flow when the source manifold is either a step-2 sub-Riemannian manifold or a step-r sub-Riemannian manifold whose sub-Riemannian structure comes from a tense Riemannian foliation. Finally, some Hartman type results are also established for the flow.

Convergence of Closed Pseudo-Hermitian Manifolds

Based on uniform CR Sobolev inequality and Moser iteration, this paper investigates the convergence of closed pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. In terms of the subelliptic inequality, the set of closed normalized pseudo-Einstein manifolds with some uniform geometric conditions is compact. Moreover, the set of closed normalized Sasakian $η$-Einstein $(2n+1)$-manifolds with Carnot-Carathéodory distance bounded from above, volume bounded from below and $L^{n + \frac{1}{2}}$ norm of pseudo-Hermitian curvature bounded is $C^\infty$ compact. As an application, we will deduce some pointed convergence of complete Kähler cones with Sasakian manifolds as their links.

Comparison theorems in pseudo-Hermitian geometry and applications

In this paper, we study the theory of geodesics with respect to the Tanaka-Webster connection in a pseudo-Hermitian manifold, aiming to generalize some comparison results in Riemannian geometry to the case of pseudo-Hermitian geometry. Some Hopf-Rinow type, Cartan-Hadamard type and Bonnet-Myers type results are established.

Liouville Theorems for critical points of the p-Ginzburg-Landau type functional

In this paper, we consider the smooth map from a Riemannian manifold to the standard Euclidean space and the p-Ginzburg-Landau energy. Under suitable curvature conditions on the domain manifold, some Liouville type theorems are established by assuming either growth conditions of the p-Ginzburg-Landau energy or an asymptotic condition at the infinity for the maps. In the end of paper, we obtain the unique constant solution of the constant Dirichlet boundary value problems on starlike domains.

On $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic Maps between pseudo-Hermitian manifolds

In this paper, we investigate critical maps of the horizontal energy functional $E_{H,\widetilde{H}}(f)$ for maps between two pseudo-Hermitian manifolds $(M^{2m+1},H(M),J,θ)$ and $(N^{2n+1},\widetilde{H}(N), \widetilde{J},\widetildeθ)$. These critical maps are referred to as $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic maps. We derive a CR Bochner formula for the horizontal energy density $|df_{H, \widetilde{H}}|^{2}$, and introduce a Paneitz type operator acting on maps to refine the Bochner formula. As a result, we are able to establish some Bochner type theorems for $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic maps. We also introduce $(H,\widetilde{H})$-pluriharmonic, $(H,\widetilde{H})$-holomorphic maps between these manifolds, which provide us examples of $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic maps. Moreover, a Lichnerowicz type result is established to show that foliated $(H,\widetilde{ H})$-holomorphic maps are actually minimizers of $E_{H,\widetilde{H}}(f)$ in their foliated homotopy classes. We also prove some unique continuation results for characterizing either horizontally constant maps or foliated $(H,\widetilde{H})$-holomorphic maps. Furthermore, Eells-Sampson type existence results for $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic maps are established if both manifolds are compact Sasakian and the target is regular with non-positive horizontal sectional curvature. Finally, we give a foliated rigidity result for $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic maps and Siu type strong rigidity results for compact regular Sasakian manifolds with either strongly negative horizontal curvature or adequately negative horizontal curvature.

$L^2$ curvature pinching theorems and vanishing theorems on complete Riemannian manifolds

In this paper, by using monotonicity formulas for vector bundle-valued $p$-forms satisfying the conservation law, we first obtain general $L^2$ global rigidity theorems for locally conformally flat (LCF) manifolds with constant scalar curvature, under curvature pinching conditions. Secondly, we prove vanishing results for $L^2$ and some non-$L^2$ harmonic $p$-forms on LCF manifolds, by assuming that the underlying manifolds satisfy pointwise or integral curvature conditions. Moreover, by a Theorem of Li-Tam for harmonic functions, we show that the underlying manifold must have only one end. Finally, we obtain Liouville theorems for $p$-harmonic functions on LCF manifolds under pointwise Ricci curvature conditions.

On the p-pseudoharmonic map heat flow

In this paper, we consider the heat flow for p-pseudoharmonic maps from a closed Sasakian manifold M into a compact Riemannian manifold N. We prove global existence and asymptotic convergence of the solution for the p-pseudoharmonic map heat flow, provided that the sectional curvature of the target manifold N is nonpositive. Moreover, without the curvature assumption on the target manifold, we obtain global existence and asymptotic convergence of the p-pseudoharmonic map heat flow as well when its initial p-energy is sufficiently small.

Biharmonic submanifolds of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds

In this paper, we derived biharmonic equations for pseudo-Riemannian submanifolds of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which includes the biharmonic equations for submanifolds of Riemannian manifolds as a special case. As applications, we proved that a pseudo-umbilical biharmonic pseudo-Riemannian submanifold of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold has constant mean curvature, we completed the classifications of biharmonic pseudo-Riemannian hypersurfaces with at most two distinct principal curvatures, which were used to give four construction methods to produce proper biharmonic pseudo-Riemannian submanifolds from minimal submanifolds. We also made some comparison study between biharmonic hypersurfaces of Riemannian space forms and the space-like biharmonic hypersurfaces of pseudo-Riemannian space forms.

Rigidity theorems of complete Kähler-Einstein manifolds and complex space forms

We derive some elliptic differential inequalities from the Weitzenböck formulas for the traceless Ricci tensor of a Kähler manifold with constant scalar curvature and the Bochner tensor of a Kähler-Einstein manifold respectively. Using elliptic estimates and maximum principle, some $L^p$ and $L^\infty $ pinching results are established to characterize Kähler-Einstein manifolds among Kähler manifolds with constant scalar curvature, and others are given to characterize complex space forms among Kähler-Einstein manifolds. Finally, these pinching results may be combined to characterize complex space forms among Kähler manifolds with constant scalar curvature.

Rigidity Theorems for Complete Sasakian Manifolds with Constant Pseudo-Hermitian Scalar Curvature

The orthogonal decomposition of the Webster curvature provides us a way to characterize some canonical metrics on a pseudo-Hermitian manifold. We derive some subelliptic differential inequalities from the Weitzenböck formulas for the traceless pseudo-Hermitian Ricci tensor and the Chern-Moser tensor of Sasakian manifolds with constant pseudo-Hermitian scalar curvature and Sasakian pseudo-Einstein manifolds respectively. By means of either subelliptic estimates or maximum principle, some rigidity theorems are established to characterize Sasakian pseudo-Einstein manifolds among Sasakian manifolds with constant pseudo-Hermitian scalar curvature and Sasakian space forms among Sasakian pseudo-Einstein manifolds respectively.
