Myofibroblasts slow down defect recombination dynamics in mixed cell monolayers

Cellular organization and mechanotransduction pathways are crucial regulators of tissue morphogenesis, whereas their dysregulation contributes to pathologies. Overactive myofibroblasts are key drivers of fibrosis, yet how their presence alters collective cellular ordering remains unclear. Owing to steric interactions, elongated cells exhibit local order. Topological defects, where alignment is disrupted, have been postulated to serve as mechanical centers. In this study, we examine how incorporating slower moving myofibroblast phenotype impacts defect relaxation in monolayers consisting of co-cultured fibroblasts and myofibroblasts. In this system, myofibroblasts act as the less active component. Increasing their fraction increases disorder strength and slows defect recombination. On microgrooved surfaces, higher myofibroblast concentrations lead to worse alignment, suggesting single-cell mechanosensing and cell-cell interactions act jointly. Furthermore, we found that myofibroblasts preferentially localize at negatively charged -1/2 defects, whereas fibroblasts localize at +1/2 defects. Consequently, the slowdown of recombination dynamics can be partially attributed to myofibroblasts' preferential association with the less mobile -1/2 defects, increasing local friction and impeding defect mobility. This localization may also reduce compressive stress on myofibroblasts, as indicated by immunofluorescence of a downstream mechanotransducer. This work provides insights into possible connections between topological defects and cell motility in mixed phenotype monolayers.

Impacts of Data Splitting Strategies on Parameterized Link Prediction Algorithms

Link prediction is a fundamental problem in network science, aiming to infer potential or missing links based on observed network structures. With the increasing adoption of parameterized models, the rigor of evaluation protocols has become critically important. However, a previously common practice of using the test set during hyperparameter tuning has led to human-induced information leakage, thereby inflating the reported model performance. To address this issue, this study introduces a novel evaluation metric, Loss Ratio, which quantitatively measures the extent of performance overestimation. We conduct large-scale experiments on 60 real-world networks across six domains. The results demonstrate that the information leakage leads to an average overestimation of about 3.6%, with the bias reaching over 15% for specific algorithms. Meanwhile, heuristic and random-walk-based methods exhibit greater robustness and stability. The analysis uncovers a pervasive information leakage issue in link prediction evaluation and underscores the necessity of adopting standardized data splitting strategies to enable fair and reproducible benchmarking of link prediction models.

FCPE: A Fast Context-based Pitch Estimation Model

Pitch estimation (PE) in monophonic audio is crucial for MIDI transcription and singing voice conversion (SVC), but existing methods suffer significant performance degradation under noise. In this paper, we propose FCPE, a fast context-based pitch estimation model that employs a Lynx-Net architecture with depth-wise separable convolutions to effectively capture mel spectrogram features while maintaining low computational cost and robust noise tolerance. Experiments show that our method achieves 96.79\% Raw Pitch Accuracy (RPA) on the MIR-1K dataset, on par with the state-of-the-art methods. The Real-Time Factor (RTF) is 0.0062 on a single RTX 4090 GPU, which significantly outperforms existing algorithms in efficiency. Code is available at https://github.com/CNChTu/FCPE.

Coherent control of spin tunneling in a spin-orbit coupled bosonic triple well

We study the coherent control of spin tunneling for a spin-orbit (SO) coupled boson held in a driven triple well. Under high-frequency approximation, we analytically obtain the quasienergies of the SO-coupled bosonic triple-well system and fine energy band structure is displayed. By adjusting the driving parameters, we reveal that the directed selective spin-flipping or spin-conserving tunneling of a SO-coupled boson occurs along different pathways and in different directions. The analytical results are numerically confirmed and perfect agreements are found. Further, a scheme of quantum spin switch with or without spin-flipping is presented. These results may be useful for quantum information processing and the design of spintronic devices.

Infinite families of higher torsion in the homotopy groups of Moore spaces

We give a refinement of the stable Snaith splitting of the double loop space of a Moore space and use it to construct infinite $v_1$-periodic families of elements of order $p^{r+1}$ in the homotopy groups of mod $p^r$ Moore spaces. For odd primes $p$, our splitting implies that the homotopy groups of the mod $p^{r+1}$ Moore spectrum are summands of the unstable homotopy groups of each mod $p^r$ Moore space.

Controlling stable tunneling in a non-Hermitian spin-orbit coupled bosonic junction

In this paper, we study how to apply a periodic driving field to control stable spin tunneling in a non-Hermitian spin-orbit coupled bosonic double-well system. By means of a high-frequency approximation, we obtain the analytical Floquet solutions and their associated quasienergies and thus construct the general non-Floquet solutions of the dissipative spin-orbit coupled bosonic system. Based on detailed analysis of the Floquet quasienergy spectrum, the profound effect of system parameters and the periodic driving field on the stability of spin-dependent tunneling is investigated analytically and numerically for both balanced and unbalanced gain-loss between two wells. Under balanced gain and loss, we find that the stable spin-flipping tunneling is preferentially suppressed with the increase of gain-loss strength. When the ratio of Zeeman field strength to periodic driving frequency $Ω/ω$ is even, there is a possibility that \emph{continuous} stable parameter regions will exist. When $Ω/ω$ is odd, nevertheless, only \emph{discrete} stable parameter regions are found. Under unbalanced gain and loss, whether $Ω/ω$ is even or odd, we can get parametric equilibrium conditions for the existence of stable spin tunneling. The results could be useful for the experiments of controlling stable spin transportation in a non-Hermitian spin-orbit coupled system.
