Beyond Retrieval: Learning Compact User Representations for Scalable LLM Personalization

Personalizing large language models requires adapting model behavior to individual users while preserving robustness and deployment-scale efficiency. Existing approaches typically personalize LLMs either at the input level, by retrieving user histories or constructing profile prompts, or at the parameter level, by maintaining user-specific parameter-efficient modules. The former makes personalization sensitive to retrieval quality and prompt design, whereas the latter incurs storage and maintenance costs that grow with the user population. To address these limitations, we propose TAP-PER (Temporal Attentive Prefix for PERsonalization), a prefix-based framework that encodes user preferences as learnable representations, avoiding the serialization of user histories into prompts and replacing heavy per-user adapters with lightweight user-state prefix embeddings. Inspired by personalized recommendation systems, TAP-PER decomposes user modeling into user-state and query-conditioned components, and incorporates temporal signals to capture the evolving nature of user interests. Experiments on six LaMP tasks show that TAP-PER consistently outperforms prompt-based and model-based baselines across classification, rating, and generation settings. Moreover, TAP-PER uses 130x fewer per-user parameters than OPPU and roughly half the total parameter footprint of PER-PCS at the 1,000-user scale, demonstrating scalable personalization without prompt-serialized histories or heavy per-user adapters.

Moiré Phonons and Emergent Exciton-Phonon Coupling in a Moiré Heterobilayer

Moiré superlattices have emerged as a new platform for engineering electronic and optical properties in van der Waals heterostructures, enabling control over correlated and excitonic phenomena. Yet the impact of moiré superlattices on exciton-phonon coupling remains largely unexplored. Here we demonstrate emergent, layer-selective coupling between moiré phonons and moiré excitons in angle-aligned WS2/WSe2 heterobilayers. Using a broadband terahertz phonon transducer, we coherently launch moiré phonons that resonantly perturb the excitonic states. We show that the exciton-phonon coupling is intrinsically modified by the moiré superlattice in a layer-selective manner. A driven oscillator model captures the dynamics, revealing three moiré phonon resonances with distinct coupling to the moiré excitons. First principles calculations show that many moiré phonon modes can arise with distinct strongly hybridized in-plane and out-of-plane vibrations in the moiré unit cells. The calculations further identify the three experimentally observed moiré phonons and their emergent characteristic coupling to the moiré excitons.

Probing phonon chirality and circular lattice motion with symmetry-selective nonlinear optical spectroscopy

Truly chiral phonons are lattice eigenmodes that combine broken mirror symmetry with circular atomic motion. They can mediate angular-momentum-selective interactions in quantum materials, yet directly resolving both their chirality and underlying circular motion remains challenging, especially in high-symmetry crystals. Here we show that symmetry-selective terahertz difference-frequency spectroscopy provides a phase- and polarization-resolved route to identifying truly chiral phonons in a tabletop experiment. Using $α$-quartz as a benchmark, we validate this approach by resolving phonon chirality via chiral-sensitive $χ^{(2)}_{ijk}$ tensor elements ($i \neq j \neq k$), while vector-field detection directly reveals a time-dependent polarization rotation arising from circular ionic motion and thus nonzero angular momentum. Applying the same protocol to tetragonal $α$-TeO$_2$, we isolate chiral $E$-mode resonances below 5~THz and directly verify their circular lattice motion, thereby resolving a symmetry-imposed ambiguity in chiral-phonon identification in fourfold-symmetric crystals. Our results establish symmetry-selective nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy as a general route to identify truly chiral phonons in condensed matter systems.

Gate- and Optically Controlled Nonlinear Optical Response in Graphene via Non-Perturbative Ultrafast Carrier Dynamics

While the Dirac band structure of graphene has established it as a leading platform for ultrafast optoelectronics, its non-perturbative nonlinear response under intense excitation remains poorly understood. Here, we report ultrafast spectral modulation of nonlinear optical signals in graphene. By utilizing a robust suspended-graphene platform that allows for both wide-range electrostatic gating and high optical damage thresholds, we observe dramatic frequency shifts (up to 8 THz) in third-harmonic generation (THG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) driven by pump-induced nonequilibrium carrier dynamics. The magnitude and even the direction of this spectral shift can be reversibly controlled by the Fermi level and excitation conditions. A quasiequilibrium theoretical framework based on hot-carrier dynamics quantitatively reproduces the measured spectral evolution, elucidating the critical interplay between carrier heating and the Fermi level. These findings establish a universal mechanism for carrier-mediated spectral control, providing a practical route toward high-speed, gatetunable nonlinear photonic architectures.

High Efficiency Wiener Filter-based Point Cloud Quality Enhancement for MPEG G-PCC

Point clouds, which directly record the geometry and attributes of scenes or objects by a large number of points, are widely used in various applications such as virtual reality and immersive communication. However, due to the huge data volume and unstructured geometry, efficient compression of point clouds is very crucial. The Moving Picture Expert Group is establishing a geometry-based point cloud compression (G-PCC) standard for both static and dynamic point clouds in recent years. Although lossy compression of G-PCC can achieve a very high compression ratio, the reconstruction quality is relatively low, especially at low bitrates. To mitigate this problem, we propose a high efficiency Wiener filter that can be integrated into the encoder and decoder pipeline of G-PCC to improve the reconstruction quality as well as the rate-distortion performance for dynamic point clouds. Specifically, we first propose a basic Wiener filter, and then improve it by introducing coefficients inheritance and variance-based point classification for the Luma component. Besides, to reduce the complexity of the nearest neighbor search during the application of the Wiener filter, we also propose a Morton code-based fast nearest neighbor search algorithm for efficient calculation of filter coefficients. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve average Bjøntegaard delta rates of -6.1%, -7.3%, and -8.0% for Luma, Chroma Cb, and Chroma Cr components, respectively, under the condition of lossless-geometry-lossy-attributes configuration compared to the latest G-PCC encoding platform (i.e., geometry-based solid content test model version 7.0 release candidate 2) by consuming affordable computational complexity.

Rate-Distortion Optimized Skip Coding of Region Adaptive Hierarchical Transform Coefficients for MPEG G-PCC

Three-dimensional (3D) point clouds are becoming more and more popular for representing 3D objects and scenes. Due to limited network bandwidth, efficient compression of 3D point clouds is crucial. To tackle this challenge, the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is actively developing the Geometry-based Point Cloud Compression (G-PCC) standard, incorporating innovative methods to optimize compression, such as the Region-Adaptive Hierarchical Transform (RAHT) nestled within a layer-by-layer octree-tree structure. Nevertheless, a notable problem still exists in RAHT, i.e., the proportion of zero residuals in the last few RAHT layers leads to unnecessary bitrate consumption. To address this problem, we propose an adaptive skip coding method for RAHT, which adaptively determines whether to encode the residuals of the last several layers or not, thereby improving the coding efficiency. In addition, we propose a rate-distortion cost calculation method associated with an adaptive Lagrange multiplier. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves average Bjøntegaard rate improvements of -3.50%, -5.56%, and -4.18% for the Luma, Cb, and Cr components, respectively, on dynamic point clouds, when compared with the state-of-the-art G-PCC reference software under the common test conditions recommended by MPEG.

Probing Interface of Perovskite Oxide Using Surface-specific Terahertz Spectroscopy

The surface/interface species in perovskite oxides play an essential role in many novel emergent physical phenomena and chemical processes. With low eigen-energy in the terahertz region, such species at buried interfaces remain poorly understood due to the lack of feasible experimental techniques. Here, we show that vibrational resonances and two-dimensional electron gas at the interface can be characterized using surface-specific nonlinear spectroscopy in the terahertz range. This technique uses intra-pulse difference frequency mixing (DFM) process, which is allowed only at surface/interface of a medium with inversion symmetry. Sub-monolayer sensitivity can be achieved using the state-of-the-art detection scheme for the terahertz emission from surface/interface. As a demonstration, Drude-like nonlinear response from the two-dimensional electron gas emerging at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 or Al2O3/ SrTiO3 interface was successfully observed. Meanwhile, the interfacial vibrational spectrum of the ferroelectric soft mode of SrTiO3 at 2.8 THz was also obtained that was polarized by the surface field in the interfacial region. The corresponding surface/interface potential, which is a key parameter for SrTiO3-based interface superconductivity and photocatalysis, can now be determined optically via quantitative analysis on the polarized phonon spectrum. The interfacial species with resonant frequencies in the THz region revealed by our method provide more insights into the understanding of physical properties of complex oxides.

Efficient Generation of Intense Broadband Terahertz Pulses from Quartz

The intense terahertz (THz) pulses facilitate the observation of various nonlinear optical effects and manipulation of material properties. In this work, we report a convenient approach that can produce strong broadband terahertz pulses with center frequency tunable between 2-4 THz. The coherent THz light source with pulse energy of 1.2 microjoule can be generated from a low-cost crystalline quartz pumped by an ultrashort tilted wave-front pulse. Thanks to the wide transparent spectral window and high damage threshold, our theoretical analysis and experiment show that the optical rectification in quartz is as efficient as that in LiNbO3, but covers much broader spectral range. This work not only provides the light source that is urgently needed for nonlinear THz spectroscopy beyond 1 THz, but offers an alternative route in the selection of nonlinear optical crystals for optical frequency conversion.

Deep Multi-View Enhancement Hashing for Image Retrieval

Hashing is an efficient method for nearest neighbor search in large-scale data space by embedding high-dimensional feature descriptors into a similarity preserving Hamming space with a low dimension. However, large-scale high-speed retrieval through binary code has a certain degree of reduction in retrieval accuracy compared to traditional retrieval methods. We have noticed that multi-view methods can well preserve the diverse characteristics of data. Therefore, we try to introduce the multi-view deep neural network into the hash learning field, and design an efficient and innovative retrieval model, which has achieved a significant improvement in retrieval performance. In this paper, we propose a supervised multi-view hash model which can enhance the multi-view information through neural networks. This is a completely new hash learning method that combines multi-view and deep learning methods. The proposed method utilizes an effective view stability evaluation method to actively explore the relationship among views, which will affect the optimization direction of the entire network. We have also designed a variety of multi-data fusion methods in the Hamming space to preserve the advantages of both convolution and multi-view. In order to avoid excessive computing resources on the enhancement procedure during retrieval, we set up a separate structure called memory network which participates in training together. The proposed method is systematically evaluated on the CIFAR-10, NUS-WIDE and MS-COCO datasets, and the results show that our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art single-view and multi-view hashing methods.
