DiffDesign: Controllable Diffusion with Meta Prior for Efficient Interior Design Generation

Interior design is a complex and creative discipline involving aesthetics, functionality, ergonomics, and materials science. Effective solutions must meet diverse requirements, typically producing multiple deliverables such as renderings and design drawings from various perspectives. Consequently, interior design processes are often inefficient and demand significant creativity. With advances in machine learning, generative models have emerged as a promising means of improving efficiency by creating designs from text descriptions or sketches. However, few generative works focus on interior design, leading to substantial discrepancies between outputs and practical needs, such as differences in size, spatial scope, and the lack of controllable generation quality. To address these challenges, we propose DiffDesign, a controllable diffusion model with meta priors for efficient interior design generation. Specifically, we utilize the generative priors of a 2D diffusion model pre-trained on a large image dataset as our rendering backbone. We further guide the denoising process by disentangling cross-attention control over design attributes, such as appearance, pose, and size, and introduce an optimal transfer-based alignment module to enforce view consistency. Simultaneously, we construct an interior design-specific dataset, DesignHelper, consisting of over 400 solutions across more than 15 spatial types and 15 design styles. This dataset helps fine-tune DiffDesign. Extensive experiments conducted on various benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of DiffDesign.

In this paper, we further explore the potential of analog in-memory computing (AiMC) and introduce an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) accelerator architecture named YOCO, featuring three key proposals: (1) YOCO proposes a novel 8-bit in-situ multiply arithmetic (IMA) achieving 123.8 TOPS/W energy-efficiency and 34.9 TOPS throughput through efficient charge-domain computation and timedomain accumulation mechanism. (2) YOCO employs a hybrid ReRAM-SRAM memory structure to balance computational efficiency and storage density. (3) YOCO tailors an IMC-friendly attention computing flow with an efficient pipeline to accelerate the inference of transformer-based AI models. Compared to three SOTA baselines, YOCO on average improves energy efficiency by up to 3.9x-19.9x and throughput by up to 6.8x-33.6x across 10 CNN/transformer models.

The First WARA Robotics Mobile Manipulation Challenge -- Lessons Learned

The first WARA Robotics Mobile Manipulation Challenge, held in December 2024 at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden, addressed the automation of task-intensive and repetitive manual labor in laboratory environments - specifically the transport and cleaning of glassware. Designed in collaboration with AstraZeneca, the challenge invited academic teams to develop autonomous robotic systems capable of navigating human-populated lab spaces and performing complex manipulation tasks, such as loading items into industrial dishwashers. This paper presents an overview of the challenge setup, its industrial motivation, and the four distinct approaches proposed by the participating teams. We summarize lessons learned from this edition and propose improvements in design to enable a more effective second iteration to take place in 2025. The initiative bridges an important gap in effective academia-industry collaboration within the domain of autonomous mobile manipulation systems by promoting the development and deployment of applied robotic solutions in real-world laboratory contexts.

AwesomeMeta+: A Mixed-Prototyping Meta-Learning System Supporting AI Application Design Anywhere

Meta-learning, also known as ``learning to learn'', enables models to acquire great generalization abilities by learning from various tasks. Recent advancements have made these models applicable across various fields without data constraints, offering new opportunities for general artificial intelligence. However, applying these models can be challenging due to their often task-specific, standalone nature and the technical barriers involved. To address this challenge, we develop AwesomeMeta+, a prototyping and learning system designed to standardize the key components of meta-learning within the context of systems engineering. It standardizes different components of meta-learning and uses a building block metaphor to assist in model construction. By employing a modular, building-block approach, AwesomeMeta+ facilitates the construction of meta-learning models that can be adapted and optimized for specific application needs in real-world systems. The system is developed to support the full lifecycle of meta-learning system engineering, from design to deployment, by enabling users to assemble compatible algorithmic modules. We evaluate AwesomeMeta+ through feedback from 50 researchers and a series of machine-based tests and user studies. The results demonstrate that AwesomeMeta+ enhances users' understanding of meta-learning principles, accelerates system engineering processes, and provides valuable decision-making support for efficient deployment of meta-learning systems in complex application scenarios.

A Quasi-deterministic Channel Model for Underwater Acoustic Communication Systems

In this paper, a quasi-deterministic (Q-D) model for non-stationary underwater acoustic (UWA) channels is proposed. This model combines the BELLHOP deterministic model and geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM), which provides higher accuracy and flexibility. Different propagation components in shallow water are classified as D-rays, R-rays and F-rays in the proposed model, where D-rays are modeled by BELLHOP while both R-rays and F-rays are modeled by GBSM. Some important channel statistical properties, including time-frequency correlation function (TF-CF), Doppler power spectrum density (PSD), average Doppler shift, and RMS Doppler spread are derived and simulated. Finally, simulation results illustrate the correctness of the proposed model.

Pre-Trained Vision Models as Perception Backbones for Safety Filters in Autonomous Driving

End-to-end vision-based autonomous driving has achieved impressive success, but safety remains a major concern. The safe control problem has been addressed in low-dimensional settings using safety filters, e.g., those based on control barrier functions. Designing safety filters for vision-based controllers in the high-dimensional settings of autonomous driving can similarly alleviate the safety problem, but is significantly more challenging. In this paper, we address this challenge by using frozen pre-trained vision representation models as perception backbones to design vision-based safety filters, inspired by these models' success as backbones of robotic control policies. We empirically evaluate the offline performance of four common pre-trained vision models in this context. We try three existing methods for training safety filters for black-box dynamics, as the dynamics over representation spaces are not known. We use the DeepAccident dataset that consists of action-annotated videos from multiple cameras on vehicles in CARLA simulating real accident scenarios. Our results show that the filters resulting from our approach are competitive with the ones that are given the ground truth state of the ego vehicle and its environment.

On the Volume Conjecture for hyperbolic Dehn-filled 3-manifolds along the twist knots

For a twist knot $\mathcal{K}_{p'}$, let $M$ be the closed $3$-manifold obtained by doing $(p, q)$ Dehn-filling along $\mathcal{K}_{p'}$. In this article, we prove that Chen-Yang's volume conjecture holds for sufficiently large $|p| + |q|$ and $|p'|$ for $M$. In the proof, we construct a new ideal triangulation of the Whitehead link complement which is different from Thurston's triangulation. Our triangulation has led to some new discoveries regarding symmetry, including insights into ``sister manifolds'' as introduced by Hodgson, Meyerhoff, and Weeks.

Differential cross-section measurements for neutron-induced $α$ production reactions on carbon across neutron energy range of 6.2 to 76 MeV

Angle-differential cross sections for neutron-induced $α$ production in carbon were determined at thirty discrete neutron energy levels ranging from 6.2 to 76 MeV at the Back-n white neutron source of the China Spallation Neutron Source. Utilizing the $ΔE-E$ telescopes within the Light-charged Particle Detector Array spanning angular measurements from 24.5°to 155.5° in the laboratory frame, the $^{12}C(n,α)x$ reaction cross sections were obtained. These experimental findings exhibit a strong concordance with prior results and have been benchmarked against theoretical estimates from codes such as TALYS, Geant4, and assessments from the ENDF/B-VIII.0 database. Remarkably, distinct resonance-like features were observed at neutron energies of 13.7, 22.4, 29.5, and 61.8 MeV, marking their first-time identification in the literature.Furthermore, a comparative analysis involving the theoretical Distorted Wave Born Approximation was conducted.

Movable Antenna-Enhanced Wireless Powered Mobile Edge Computing Systems

In this paper, we propose a movable antenna (MA) enhanced scheme for wireless powered mobile edge computing (WP-MEC) system, where the hybrid access point (HAP) equipped with multiple MAs first emits wireless energy to charge wireless devices (WDs), and then receives the offloaded tasks from the WDs for edge computing. The MAs deployed at the HAP enhance the spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs) by flexibly adjusting the positions of MAs within an available region, thereby improving the efficiency of both downlink wireless energy transfer (WPT) and uplink task offloading. To balance the performance enhancement against the implementation intricacy, we further propose three types of MA positioning configurations, i.e., dynamic MA positioning, semi-dynamic MA positioning, and static MA positioning. In addition, the non-linear power conversion of energy harvesting (EH) circuits at the WDs and the finite computing capability at the edge server are taken into account. Our objective is to maximize the sum computational rate (SCR) by jointly optimizing the time allocation, positions of MAs, energy beamforming matrix, receive combing vectors, and offloading strategies of WDs. To solve the non-convex problems, efficient alternating optimization (AO) frameworks are proposed. Moreover, we propose a hybrid algorithm of particle swarm optimization with variable local search (PSO-VLS) to solve the sub-problem of MA positioning. Numerical results validate the superiority of exploiting MAs over the fixed-position antennas (FPAs) for enhancing the SCR performance of WP-MEC systems.

The inversion number of dijoins and blow-up digraphs

For an oriented graph $D$, the $inversion$ of $X \subseteq V(D)$ in $D$ is the digraph obtained from $D$ by reversing the direction of all arcs with both ends in $X$. The inversion number of $D$, denoted by $inv(D)$, is the minimum number of inversions needed to transform $D$ into an acyclic digraph. In this paper, we first show that $inv (\overrightarrow{C_3} \Rightarrow D)= inv(D) +1$ for any oriented graph $\textit{D}$ with even inversion number $inv(D)$, where the dijoin $\overrightarrow{C_3} \Rightarrow D$ is the oriented graph obtained from the disjoint union of $\overrightarrow{C_3}$ and $D$ by adding all arcs from $\overrightarrow{C_3}$ to $D$. Thus we disprove the conjecture of Aubian el at. \cite{2212.09188} and the conjecture of Alon el at. \cite{2212.11969}. We also study the blow-up graph which is an oriented graph obtained from a tournament by replacing all vertices into oriented graphs. We construct a tournament $T$ with order $n$ and $inv(T)=\frac{n}{3}+1$ using blow-up graphs.

Meta-Auxiliary Learning for Micro-Expression Recognition

Micro-expressions (MEs) are involuntary movements revealing people's hidden feelings, which has attracted numerous interests for its objectivity in emotion detection. However, despite its wide applications in various scenarios, micro-expression recognition (MER) remains a challenging problem in real life due to three reasons, including (i) data-level: lack of data and imbalanced classes, (ii) feature-level: subtle, rapid changing, and complex features of MEs, and (iii) decision-making-level: impact of individual differences. To address these issues, we propose a dual-branch meta-auxiliary learning method, called LightmanNet, for fast and robust micro-expression recognition. Specifically, LightmanNet learns general MER knowledge from limited data through a dual-branch bi-level optimization process: (i) In the first level, it obtains task-specific MER knowledge by learning in two branches, where the first branch is for learning MER features via primary MER tasks, while the other branch is for guiding the model obtain discriminative features via auxiliary tasks, i.e., image alignment between micro-expressions and macro-expressions since their resemblance in both spatial and temporal behavioral patterns. The two branches of learning jointly constrain the model of learning meaningful task-specific MER knowledge while avoiding learning noise or superficial connections between MEs and emotions that may damage its generalization ability. (ii) In the second level, LightmanNet further refines the learned task-specific knowledge, improving model generalization and efficiency. Extensive experiments on various benchmark datasets demonstrate the superior robustness and efficiency of LightmanNet.

Weak degeneracy of regular graphs

Motivated by the study of greedy algorithms for graph coloring, Bernshteyn and Lee introduced a generalization of graph degeneracy, which is called weak degeneracy. In this paper, we show the lower bound of the weak degeneracy for $d$-regular graphs is exactly $\lfloor d/2\rfloor +1$, which is tight. This result refutes the conjecture of Bernshteyn and Lee on this lower bound.

CholecTriplet2021: A benchmark challenge for surgical action triplet recognition

Context-aware decision support in the operating room can foster surgical safety and efficiency by leveraging real-time feedback from surgical workflow analysis. Most existing works recognize surgical activities at a coarse-grained level, such as phases, steps or events, leaving out fine-grained interaction details about the surgical activity; yet those are needed for more helpful AI assistance in the operating room. Recognizing surgical actions as triplets of combination delivers comprehensive details about the activities taking place in surgical videos. This paper presents CholecTriplet2021: an endoscopic vision challenge organized at MICCAI 2021 for the recognition of surgical action triplets in laparoscopic videos. The challenge granted private access to the large-scale CholecT50 dataset, which is annotated with action triplet information. In this paper, we present the challenge setup and assessment of the state-of-the-art deep learning methods proposed by the participants during the challenge. A total of 4 baseline methods from the challenge organizers and 19 new deep learning algorithms by competing teams are presented to recognize surgical action triplets directly from surgical videos, achieving mean average precision (mAP) ranging from 4.2% to 38.1%. This study also analyzes the significance of the results obtained by the presented approaches, performs a thorough methodological comparison between them, in-depth result analysis, and proposes a novel ensemble method for enhanced recognition. Our analysis shows that surgical workflow analysis is not yet solved, and also highlights interesting directions for future research on fine-grained surgical activity recognition which is of utmost importance for the development of AI in surgery.

Optimal Locating-Paired-Dominating Sets in King Grids

In this paper, we continue the study of locating-paired-dominating set, abbreviated LPDS, in graphs introduced by McCoy and Henning. Given a finite or infinite graph $G=(V,E)$, a set $S\subset V$ is paired-dominating if the induced subgraph $G[S]$ has a perfect matching and every vertex in $V$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$. The other condition for LPDS requires that for any distinct vertices $u,v \in V\backslash S$, we have $N(u)\cap S\neq N(v)\cap S$. Motivated by the conjecture of Kinawi, Hussain and Niepel, we prove the minimal density of LPDS in the king grid is between $8/37$ and $2/9$, and we find uncountable many different LPDS with density $2/9$ in the king grid. These results partially solve their conjecture.

Forgetting Prevention for Cross-regional Fraud Detection with Heterogeneous Trade Graph

With the booming growth of e-commerce, detecting financial fraud has become an urgent task to avoid transaction risks. Despite the successful applications of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) in fraud detection, the existing solutions are only suitable for a narrow scope due to the limitation in data collection. Especially when expanding a business into new territory, e.g., new cities or new countries, developing a totally new model will bring the cost issue and result in forgetting previous knowledge. Moreover, recent works strive to devise GNNs to expose the implicit interactions behind financial transactions. However, most existing GNNs-based solutions concentrate on either homogeneous graphs or decomposing heterogeneous interactions into several homogeneous connections for convenience. To this end, this study proposes a novel solution based on heterogeneous trade graphs, namely HTG-CFD, to prevent knowledge forgetting of cross-regional fraud detection. In particular, the heterogeneous trade graph (HTG) is meticulously constructed from original transaction records to explore the complex semantics among different types of entities and relationships. And motivated by recent continual learning, we present a practical and task-oriented forgetting prevention method to alleviate knowledge forgetting in the context of cross-regional detection. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed HTG-CFD not only promotes the performance in cross-regional scenarios but also significantly contributes to single-regional fraud detection.

Quantitative behavior of non-integrable systems (IV)

In this paper, there are two sections. In Section 7, we simplify the eigenvalue-based surplus shortline method for arbitrary finite polysquare translation surfaces. This makes it substantially simpler to determine the irregularity exponents of some infinite orbits, and quicker to find the escape rate to infinity of some orbits in some infinite models. In Section 8, our primary goal is to extend the surplus shortline method, both this eigenvalue-based version as well as the eigenvalue-free version, for application to a large class of 2-dimensional flat dynamical systems beyond polysquares, including all Veech surfaces, and establish time-quantitative equidistribution and time-quantitative superdensity of some infinite orbits in these new systems.

Analysis of the relation between smartphone usage changes during the COVID-19 pandemic and usage preferences on apps

Since the World Health Organization announced the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, curbing the spread of the virus has become an international priority. It has greatly affected people's lifestyles. In this article, we observe and analyze the impact of the pandemic on people's lives using changes in smartphone application usage. First, through observing the daily usage change trends of all users during the pandemic, we can understand and analyze the effects of restrictive measures and policies during the pandemic on people's lives. In addition, it is also helpful for the government and health departments to take more appropriate restrictive measures in the case of future pandemics. Second, we defined the usage change features and found 9 different usage change patterns during the pandemic according to clusters of users and show the diversity of daily usage changes. It helps to understand and analyze the different impacts of the pandemic and restrictive measures on different types of people in more detail. Finally, according to prediction models, we discover the main related factors of each usage change type from user preferences and demographic information. It helps to predict changes in smartphone activity during future pandemics or when other restrictive measures are implemented, which may become a new indicator to judge and manage the risks of measures or events.
