Handlebody decompositions of 3-manifolds and polycontinuous patterns

We introduce the concept of a handlebody decomposition of a 3-manifold, a generalization of a Heegaard splitting, or a trisection. We show that two handlebody decompositions of a closed orientable 3-manifold are stably equivalent. As an application to materials science, we consider a mathematical model of polycontinuous patterns and discuss a topological study of microphase separation of a block copolymer melt.

Stable maps and hyperbolic links

A stable map of a closed orientable $3$-manifold into the real plane is called a stable map of a link in the manifold if the link is contained in the set of definite fold points. We give a complete characterization of the hyperbolic links in the $3$-sphere that admit stable maps into the real plane with exactly one (connected component of a) fiber having two singular points.

Goeritz groups of bridge decompositions

For a bridge decomposition of a link in the $3$-sphere, we define the Goeritz group to be the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the $3$-sphere that preserve each of the bridge sphere and link setwise. After describing basic properties of this group, we discuss the asymptotic behavior of the minimal pseudo-Anosov entropies. This gives an application to the asymptotic behavior of the minimal entropies for the original Goeritz groups of Heegaard splittings of the $3$-sphere and the real projective space.

Twisted book decompositions and the Goeritz groups

We consider the Goeritz groups of the Heegaard splittings induced from twisted book decompositions. We show that there exist Heegaard splittings of distance $2$ that have the infinite-order mapping class groups whereas that are not induced from open book decompositions. Explicit computation of those mapping class groups are given.

Shadows of acyclic 4-manifolds with sphere boundary

In terms of Turaev's shadows, we provide a sufficient condition for a compact, smooth, acyclic 4-manifold with boundary the 3-sphere to be diffeomorphic to the standard 4-ball. As a consequence, we prove that if a compact, smooth, acyclic 4-manifold with boundary the 3-sphere has shadow-complexity at most 2, then it is diffeomorphic to the standard 4-ball.

Extending automorphisms of the genus-2 surface over the 3-sphere

An automorphism $f$ of a closed orientable surface $Σ$ is said to be extendable over the 3-sphere $S^3$ if $f$ extends to an automorphism of the pair $(S^3, Σ)$ with respect to some embedding $Σ\hookrightarrow S^3$. We prove that if an automorphism of a genus-2 surface $Σ$ is extendable over $S^3$, then $f$ extends to an automorphism of the pair $(S^3, Σ)$ with respect to an embedding $Σ\hookrightarrow S^3$ such that $Σ$ bounds genus-2 handlebodies on both sides. The classification of essential annuli in the exterior of genus-2 handlebodies embedded in $S^3$ due to Ozawa and the second author plays a key role.

Braid group and leveling of a knot

Any knot $K$ in genus-$1$ $1$-bridge position can be moved by isotopy to lie in a union of $n$ parallel tori tubed by $n-1$ tubes so that $K$ intersects each tube in two spanning arcs, which we call a leveling of the position. The minimal $n$ for which this is possible is an invariant of the position, called the level number. In this work, we describe the leveling by the braid group on two points in the torus, which yields a numerical invariant of the position, called the $(1, 1)$-length. We show that the $(1, 1)$-length equals the level number. We then find braid descriptions for $(1,1)$-positions of all $2$-bridge knots providing upper bounds for their level numbers, and also show that the $(-2, 3, 7)$-pretzel knot has level number two.

Disk surgery and the primitive disk complexes of the $3$-sphere

Given a genus-$g$ Heegaard splitting of the $3$-sphere with $g \ge 3$, we show that the primitive disk complex for the splitting is not weakly closed under disk surgery operation. That is, there exist two primitive disks in one of the handlebodies of the splitting such that any disk surgery on one along the other one yields no primitive disks.

Four-manifolds with shadow-complexity one

We study the set of all closed oriented smooth 4-manifolds experimentally, according to a suitable complexity defined using Turaev's shadows. This complexity roughly measures how complicated the 2-skeleton of the 4-manifold is. We characterise here all the closed oriented 4-manifolds that have complexity at most one. They are generated by a certain set of 20 blocks, that are some basic 4-manifolds with boundary consisting of copies of $S^2 \times S^1$, plus connected sums with some copies of $\mathbb{CP}^2$ with either orientation. All the manifolds generated by these blocks are doubles. Many of these are doubles of 2-handlebodies and are hence efficiently encoded using finite presentations of groups. In contrast to the complexity zero case, in complexity one there are also plenty of doubles that are not doubles of 2-handlebodies, like for instance $\mathbb{RP}^3 \times S^1$.

The disk complex and 2-bridge knots

We give an alternative proof of a result of Kobayashi and Saeki that every genus one $1$-bridge position of a non-trivial $2$-bridge knot is a stabilization.

The mapping class groups of reducible Heegaard splittings of genus two

The manifold which admits a genus-$2$ reducible Heegaard splitting is one of the $3$-sphere, $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1$, lens spaces and their connected sums. For each of those manifolds except most lens spaces, the mapping class group of the genus-$2$ splitting was shown to be finitely presented. In this work, we study the remaining generic lens spaces, and show that the mapping class group of the genus-$2$ Heegaard splitting is finitely presented for any lens space by giving its explicit presentation. As an application, we show that the fundamental groups of the spaces of the genus-$2$ Heegaard splittings of lens spaces are all finitely presented.

Haken spheres for genus two Heegaard splittings

A manifold which admits a reducible genus-$2$ Heegaard splitting is one of the $3$-sphere, $S^2 \times S^1$, lens spaces or their connected sums. For each of those splittings, the complex of Haken spheres is defined. When the manifold is the $3$-sphere, $S^2 \times S^1$ or the connected sum whose summands are lens spaces or $S^2 \times S^1$, the combinatorial structure of the complex has been studied by several authors. In particular, it was shown that those complexes are all contractible. In this work, we study the remaining cases, that is, when the manifolds are lens spaces. We give a precise description of each of the complexes for the genus-$2$ Heegaard splittings of lens spaces. A remarkable fact is that the complexes for most lens spaces are not contractible and even not connected.

Connected primitive disk complexes and genus two Goeritz groups of lens spaces

Given a stabilized Heegaard splitting of a $3$-manifold, the primitive disk complex for the splitting is the subcomplex of the disk complex for a handlebody in the splitting spanned by the vertices of the primitive disks. In this work, we study the structure of the primitive disk complex for the genus two Heegaard splitting of each lens space. In particular, we show that the complex for the genus two splitting for the lens space $L(p, q)$ with $1\leq q \leq p/2$ is connected if and only if $p \equiv \pm 1 \pmod q$, and describe the combinatorial structure of each of those complexes. As an application, we obtain a finite presentation of the genus two Goeritz group of each of those lens spaces, the group of isotopy classes of orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the lens space that preserve the genus two Heegaard splitting of it.

Arc complexes, sphere complexes and Goeritz groups

We show that if a Heegaard splitting is obtained by gluing a splitting of Hempel distance at least 4 and the genus-1 splitting of $S^2 \times S^1$, then the Goeritz group of the splitting is finitely generated. To show this, we first provide a sufficient condition for a full subcomplex of the arc complex for a compact orientable surface to be contractible, which generalizes the result by Hatcher that the arc complexes are contractible. We then construct infinitely many Heegaard splittings, including the above-mentioned Heegaard splitting, for which suitably defined complexes of Haken spheres are contractible.

Knot homotopy in subspaces of the 3-sphere

We discuss an "extrinsic" property of knots in a 3-subspace of the 3-sphere $S^3$ to characterize how the subspace is embedded in $S^3$. Specifically, we show that every knot in a subspace of the 3-sphere is transient if and only if the exterior of the subspace is a disjoint union of handlebodies, i.e. regular neighborhoods of embedded graphs, where a knot in a 3-subspace of $S^3$ is said to be transient if it can be moved by a homotopy within the subspace to the trivial knot in $S^3$. To show this, we discuss relation between certain group-theoretic and homotopic properties of knots in a compact 3-manifold, which can be of independent interest. Further, using the notion of transient knot, we define an integer-valued invariant of knots in $S^3$ that we call the transient number. We then show that the union of the sets of knots of unknotting number one and tunnel number one is a proper subset of the set of knots of transient number one.

Automorphisms of the 3-sphere that preserve spatial graphs and handlebody-knots

We consider the group of isotopy classes of automorphisms of the 3-sphere that preserve a spatial graph or a handlebody-knot embedded in it. We prove that the group is finitely presented for an arbitrary spatial graph or a reducible handlebody-knot of genus two. We also prove that the groups for "most" irreducible genus two handlebody-knots are finite.
