AdS/BCFT from Conformal Bootstrap: Construction of Gravity with Branes and Particles

We initiate a conformal bootstrap program to study AdS3/BCFT2 with heavy excitations. We start by solving the bootstrap equations associated with two-point functions of scalar/non-scalar primaries under the assumption that one-point functions vanish. These correspond to gravity with a brane and a non-spinning/spinning particle where the brane and the particle do not intersect with each other. From the bootstrap equations, we obtain the energy spectrum and the modified black hole threshold. We then carefully analyze the gravity duals and find the results perfectly match the BCFT analysis. In particular, brane self-intersections, which are usually considered to be problematic, are nicely avoided by the black hole formation. Despite the assumption to solve the bootstrap equations, one-point functions of scalar primaries can be non-zero in general. We construct the holographic dual for a non-vanishing one-point function, in which the heavy particle can end on the brane, by holographically computing the Renyi entropy in AdS/BCFT. As a bonus, we find a refined formula for the holographic Renyi entropy, which appears to be crucial to correctly reproduce the boundary entropy term. On the other hand, we explain why one-point functions of non-scalar primaries always vanish from the gravity dual. The independence of the bootstrap equations to the boundary entropy helps us to construct gravity duals with negative tension branes. We also find a holographic dual of boundary primaries.

Reflected Entropy in Boundary/Interface Conformal Field Theory

Boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) and interface conformal field theory (ICFT) attract attention in the context of the information paradox problem. On this background, we develop the idea of the reflected entropy in BCFT/ICFT. We first introduce the left-right reflected entropy (LRRE) in BCFT and show that its holographic dual is given by the area of the entanglement wedge cross section (EWCS) through AdS/BCFT. We also present how to evaluate the reflected entropy in ICFT. By using this technique, we can show the universal behavior of the Markov gap in some special cases. Furthermore, we clarify what is the holographic dual of boundary primary correlation functions by using this LRRE/EWCS duality.

Semiclassical Gravity from Averaged Boundaries in two-dimensional BCFTs

The interpretation of semiclassical gravity as an ensemble-average of CFTs has provided much progress in understanding the factorization problem and the information paradox. In this article, we consider an averaging over boundary conditions in two-dimensional boundary conformal field theories (BCFTs). We show that the boundary averaging plays an important role not only in producing wormhole contributions but also in resolving the following problem. In general setups in AdS/BCFT, one can find unphysical solutions where branes have (self-)intersections. We show that the averaging nicely resolves this intersection problem. This provides another piece of evidence that averaging plays an important role in reproducing Einstein gravity. We also propose that the averaging provides a BCFT dual of the island model.

Analytic Bootstrap in 2D Boundary Conformal Field Theory: Towards Braneworld Holography

Recently, boundary conformal field theories (BCFTs) have attracted much attention in the context of quantum gravity. This is because a BCFT can be dual to gravity coupled to a heat bath CFT, known as the island model. On this background, it would be interesting to explore the duality between the boundary and the braneworld. However, this seems to be a challenging problem. The reason is because although there has been much study of rational BCFTs, there has been comparatively little study of irrational BCFTs, and irrational BCFTs are expected to be the boundary duals of the braneworlds. For this reason, we explore properties of boundary ingredients: the boundary primary spectrum, the boundary-boundary-boundary OPE coefficients and the bulk-boundary OPE coefficients. For this purpose, the conformal bootstrap is extremely useful. This is the first step in providing an understanding of BCFTs in the context of braneworld holography by using the conformal bootstrap. The techniques developed in this paper may be useful for further investigation of irrational BCFTs.

Derivation of holographic negativity in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

We present a derivation of the holographic dual of logarithmic negativity in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ that was recently conjectured in [Phys. Rev. D 99, 106014 (2019)]. This is given by the area of an extremal cosmic brane that terminates on the boundary of the entanglement wedge. The derivation consists of relating the recently introduced Rényi reflected entropy to the logarithmic negativity in holographic conformal field theories. Furthermore, we clarify previously mysterious aspects of negativity at large central charge seen in conformal blocks and comment on generalizations to generic dimensions, dynamical settings, and quantum corrections.

Holographic moving mirrors

Moving mirrors have been known as tractable setups modeling Hawking radiation from black holes. In this paper, motivated by recent developments regarding the black hole information problem, we present extensive studies of moving mirrors in conformal field theories by employing both field theoretic as well as holographic methods. Reviewing first the usual field theoretic formulation of moving mirrors, we construct their gravity dual by resorting to the AdS/BCFT construction. Based on our holographic formulation, we then calculate the time evolution of entanglement entropy in various moving mirror models. In doing so, we mainly focus on three different setups: escaping mirror, which models constant Hawking radiation emanating from an eternal black hole; kink mirror, which models an evaporating black hole formed from collapse; and the double escaping mirror, which models two constantly radiating eternal black holes. In particular, by computing the holographic entanglement entropy, we show that the kink mirror gives rise to an ideal Page curve. We also find that an interesting phase transition arises in the case of the double escaping mirror. Furthermore, we argue and provide evidence for an interpretation of moving mirrors in terms of two dimensional Liouville gravity. We also discuss the connection between quantum energy conditions and the time evolution of holographic entanglement entropy in moving mirror models.

Product of Random States and Spatial (Half-)Wormholes

We study how coarse-graining procedure of an underlying UV-complete quantum gravity gives rise to a connected geometry. It has been shown, quantum entanglement plays a key role in the emergence of such a geometric structure, namely a smooth Einstein-Rosen bridge. In this paper, we explore the possibility of the emergence of similar geometric structure from classical correlation, in the AdS/CFT setup. To this end, we consider a setup where we have two decoupled CFT Hilbert spaces, then choose a random typical state in one of the Hilbert spaces and the same state in the other. The total state in the fine-grained picture is of course a tensor product state, but averaging over the states sharing the same random coefficients creates a geometric connection for simple probes. Then, the apparent spatial wormhole causes a factorization puzzle. We argue that there is a spatial analog of half-wormholes, which resolves the puzzle in the similar way as the spacetime half-wormholes.

Dynamics of Entanglement Wedge Cross Section from Conformal Field Theories

We derive dynamics of the entanglement wedge cross section directly from the two-dimensional holographic CFTs with a local operator quench. This derivation is based on the reflected entropy, a correlation measure for mixed states. We further compare these results with the mutual information and ones for RCFTs. Our results directly suggest the classical correlation also plays an important role in the subregion/subregion duality even for dynamical setup. Besides a local operator quench, we study the reflected entropy in a heavy state and provide improved bulk interpretation. We checked the above results also hold for the odd entanglement entropy, which is another measure for mixed states related to the entanglement wedge cross section.

Codimension two holography for wedges

We propose a codimension two holography between a gravitational theory on a $d+1$ dimensional wedge spacetime and a $d-1$ dimensional CFT which lives on the corner of the wedge. Formulating this as a generalization of AdS/CFT, we explain how to compute the free energy, entanglement entropy and correlation functions of the dual CFTs from gravity. In this wedge holography, the holographic entanglement entropy is computed by a double minimization procedure. Especially, for a four dimensional gravity ($d=3$), we obtain a two dimensional CFT and the holographic entanglement entropy perfectly reproduces the known result expected from the holographic conformal anomaly. We also discuss a lower dimensional example ($d=2$) and find that a universal quantity naturally arises from gravity, which is analogous to the boundary entropy. Moreover, we consider a gravity on a wedge region in Lorentzian AdS, which is expected to be dual to a CFT with a space-like boundary. We formulate this new holography and compute the holographic entanglement entropy via a Wick rotation of the AdS/BCFT construction. Via a conformal map, this wedge spacetime is mapped into a geometry where a bubble-of-nothing expands under time evolution. We reproduce the holographic entanglement entropy for this gravity dual via CFT calculations.

Entanglement entropy in holographic moving mirror and Page curve

We calculate the time evolution of entanglement entropy in two dimensional conformal field theory with a moving mirror. For a setup modeling Hawking radiation, we obtain a linear growth of entanglement entropy and show that this can be interpreted as the production of entangled pairs. For a setup, which mimics black hole formation and evaporation, we find that the evolution follows the ideal Page curve. We perform these computations by constructing the gravity dual of the moving mirror model via holography. We also argue that our holographic setup provides a concrete model to derive the Page curve for black hole radiation in the strong coupling regime of gravity.

Universality in asymptotic bounds and its saturation in $2$D CFT

We study asymptotics of three point coefficients (light-light-heavy) and two point correlators in heavy states in unitary, compact $2$D CFTs. We prove an upper and lower bound on such quantities using numerically assisted Tauberian techniques. We obtain an optimal upper bound on the spectrum of operators appearing with fixed spin from the OPE of two identical scalars. While all the CFTs obey this bound, rational CFTs come close to saturating it. This mimics the scenario of bounds on asymptotic density of states and thereby pronounces an universal feature in asymptotics of 2D CFTs. Next, we clarify the role of smearing in interpreting the asymptotic results pertaining to considerations of eigenstate thermalization in 2D CFTs. In the context of light-light-heavy three point coefficients, we find that the order one number in the bound is sensitive to how close the light operators are from the $\frac{c}{32}$ threshold. In context of two point correlator in heavy state, we find the presence of an enigmatic regime which separates the $AdS_3$ thermal physics and the BTZ black hole physics. Furthermore, we present some new numerical results on the behavior of spherical conformal block.

The quasi-particle picture and its breakdown after local quenches: mutual information, negativity, and reflected entropy

We study the dynamics of (Rényi) mutual information, logarithmic negativity, and (Rényi) reflected entropy after exciting the ground state by a local operator. Together with recent results from Ref. [1], we are able to conjecture a close-knit structure between the three quantities that emerges in states excited above the vacuum, including both local and global quantum quenches. This structure intimately depends on the chaoticity of the theory i.e. there exist distinct sets of equivalences for integrable and chaotic theories. For rational conformal field theories (RCFT), we find all quantities to compute the quantum dimension of the primary operator inserted. In contrast, we find the correlation measures to grow (logarithmically) without bound in all $c > 1$ conformal field theories with a finite twist gap. In comparing the calculations in the two classes of theories, we are able to identify the dynamical mechanism for the breakdown of the quasi-particle picture in 2D conformal field theories. Intriguingly, we also find preliminary evidence that our general lessons apply to quantum systems considerably distinct from conformal field theories, such as integrable and chaotic spin chains, suggesting a universality of entanglement dynamics in non-equilibrium systems.

Looking at Shadows of Entanglement Wedges

We present a new method of deriving shapes of entanglement wedges directly from CFT calculations. We point out that a reduced density matrix in holographic CFTs possesses a sharp wedge structure such that inside the wedge we can distinguish two local excitations, while outside we cannot. We can determine this wedge, which we call a CFT wedge, by computing a distinguishability measure. We find that CFT wedges defined by the fidelity or Bures distance as a distinguishability measure, coincide perfectly with shadows of entanglement wedges in AdS/CFT. We confirm this agreement between CFT wedges and entanglement wedges for two dimensional holographic CFTs where the subsystem is chosen to be an interval or double intervals, as well as higher dimensional CFTs with a round ball subsystem. On the other hand if we consider a free scalar CFT, we find that there are no sharp CFT wedges. This shows that sharp entanglement wedges emerge only for holographic CFTs owing to the large N factorization. We also generalize our analysis to a time-dependent example and to a holographic boundary conformal field theory (AdS/BCFT). Finally we study other distinguishability measures to define CFT wedges. We observe that some of measures lead to CFT wedges which slightly deviate from the entanglement wedges in AdS/CFT and we give a heuristic explanation for this. This paper is an extended version of our earlier letter arXiv:1908.09939 and includes various new observations and examples.

Correlation measures and the entanglement wedge cross-section after quantum quenches in two-dimensional conformal field theories

We consider the time evolution of mixed state correlation measures in two-dimensional conformal field theories, such as logarithmic negativity, odd entropy, and reflected entropy, after quantum quenches of various kinds. These correlation measures, in the holographic context, are all associated to the entanglement wedge cross section. We contrast various classes of conformal field theories, both rational and irrational (pure) conformal field theories. First, for rational conformal field theories, whose dynamics can be well described by the quasi-particle picture, we find all four quantities for disjoint intervals to be proportional, regardless of the specific quench protocol. Second, using the light cone bootstrap, we generalize our results to irrational conformal field theories where we find sharp distinctions from the quasi-particle results and striking differences between mutual information and the other measures. The large surplus of logarithmic negativity relative to mutual information forces us to reconsider what mutual information and logarithmic negativity really measure. We interpret these results as a signature of information scrambling and chaos in irrational theories. These CFT results perfectly agree with our gravitational (holographic) calculations. Furthermore, using holography, we are able to generalize the results to outside of the light cone limit. Finally, due to the breakdown of the quasi-particle picture for irrational theories, we appeal to the "line-tension picture," motivated by random unitary circuits, as a phenomenological description. We observe that random unitary circuits, with local Hilbert space dimension determined by the Cardy formula, have precisely the same entanglement dynamics as irrational (including holographic) conformal field theories.

Entanglement Wedge Cross Section from CFT: Dynamics of Local Operator Quench

We derive dynamics of the entanglement wedge cross section from the reflected entropy for local operator quench states in the holographic CFT. By comparing between the reflected entropy and the mutual information in this dynamical setup, we argue that (1) the reflected entropy can diagnose a new perspective of the chaotic nature for given mixed states and (2) it can also characterize classical correlations in the subregion/subregion duality. Moreover, we point out that we must improve the bulk interpretation of a heavy state even in the case of well-studied entanglement entropy. Finally, we show that we can derive the same results from the odd entanglement entropy. The present paper is an extended version of our earlier report arXiv:1907.06646 and includes many new results: non-perturbative quantum correction to the reflected/odd entropy, detailed analysis in both CFT and bulk sides, many technical aspects of replica trick for reflected entropy which turn out to be important for general setup, and explicit forms of multi-point semi-classical conformal blocks under consideration.

Entanglement Entropy, OTOC and Bootstrap in 2D CFTs from Regge and Light Cone Limits of Multi-point Conformal Block

We explore the structures of light cone and Regge limit singularities of $n$-point Virasoro conformal blocks in $c>1$ two-dimensional conformal field theories with no chiral primaries, using fusion matrix approach. These CFTs include not only holographic CFTs dual to classical gravity, but also their full quantum corrections, since this approach allows us to explore full $1/c$ corrections. As the important applications, we study time dependence of Renyi entropy after a local quench and out-of-time ordered correlator (OTOC) at late time. We first show that, the $n$-th ($n>2$) Renyi entropy after a local quench in our CFT grows logarithmically at late time, for any $c$ and any conformal dimensions of excited primary. In particular, we find that this behavior is independent of $c$, contrary to the expectation that the finite $c$ correction fixes the late time Renyi entropy to be constant. We also show that the constant part of the late time Renyi entropy is given by a monodromy matrix. We also investigate OTOCs by using the monodromy matrix. We first rewrite the monodromy matrix in terms of fusion matrix explicitly. By this expression, we find that the OTOC decays exponentially in time, and the decay rates are divided into three patterns, depending on the dimensions of external operators. We note that our result is valid for any $c>1$ and any external operator dimensions. Our monodromy matrix approach can be generalized to the Liouville theory and we show that the Liouville OTOC approaches constant in the late time regime. We emphasize that, there is a number of other applications of the fusion and the monodromy matrix approaches, such as solving the conformal bootstrap equation. Therefore, it is tempting to believe that the fusion and monodromy matrix approaches provide a key to understanding the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Entanglement Entropy after Double-Excitation as Interaction Measure

We study entanglement entropy after a double local quench in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), with any central charge $c>1$. In the holographic CFT, such a state with double-excitation is dual to an AdS space with two massive particles introduced from the boundary. We show that the growth after the double local excitations cannot be given by the sum of two local quenches but with an additional negative term. This negative contribution can be naturally interpreted as due to the attractive force of gravity. In CFT side, this evaluation of the entanglement entropy is accomplished by a special limit of 6-point functions, where we employed the fusion matrix approach for multi-point conformal blocks developed in arXiv:1905.02191.

Large $c$ Virasoro Blocks from Monodromy Method beyond Known Limits

In this paper, we study large $c$ Virasoro blocks by using the Zamolodchikov monodromy method beyond its known limits. We give an analytic proof of our recent conjectur, which implied that the asymptotics of the large $c$ conformal blocks can be expressed in very simple forms, even if outside its known limits, namely the semiclassical limit or the heavy-light limit. In particular, we analytically discuss the fact that the asymptotic behavior of large $c$ conformal blocks drastically changes when the dimensions of external primary states reach the value $\frac{c}{32}$, which is conjectured by our numerical studies. The results presented in this work imply that the general solutions to the Zamolodchikov recursion relation are given by Cardy-like formula, which is an important conclusion that can be numerically drawn from our recent works. Mathematical derivations and analytical results imply that, in the bulk, the collision behavior between two heavy particles may undergo a remarkable transition associated with their masses.
