Topological terms of (2+1)d flag-manifold sigma models

We examine topological terms of $(2+1)$d sigma models and their consequences in the light of classifications of invertible quantum field theories utilizing bordism groups. In particular, we study the possible topological terms for the $U(N)/U(1)^N$ flag-manifold sigma model in detail. We argue that the Hopf-like term is absent, contrary to the expectation from a nontrivial homotopy group $π_3(U(N)/U(1)^N)=\mathbb{Z}$, and thus skyrmions cannot become anyons with arbitrary statistics. Instead, we find that there exist ${N(N-1)\over 2}-1$ types of Chern-Simons terms, some of which can turn skyrmions into fermions, and we write down explicit forms of effective Lagrangians.

Semi-Abelian gauge theories, non-invertible symmetries, and string tensions beyond $N$-ality

We study a 3d lattice gauge theory with gauge group $\mathrm{U}(1)^{N-1}\rtimes \mathrm{S}_N$, which is obtained by gauging the $\mathrm{S}_N$ global symmetry of a pure $\mathrm{U}(1)^{N-1}$ gauge theory, and we call it the semi-Abelian gauge theory. We compute mass gaps and string tensions for both theories using the monopole-gas description. We find that the effective potential receives equal contributions at leading order from monopoles associated with the entire $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ root system. Even though the center symmetry of the semi-Abelian gauge theory is given by $\mathbb{Z}_N$, we observe that the string tensions do not obey the $N$-ality rule and carry more detailed information on the representations of the gauge group. We find that this refinement is due to the presence of non-invertible topological lines as a remnant of $\mathrm{U}(1)^{N-1}$ one-form symmetry in the original Abelian lattice theory. Upon adding charged particles corresponding to $W$-bosons, such non-invertible symmetries are explicitly broken so that the $N$-ality rule should emerge in the deep infrared regime.

Topological aspects of $4$D Abelian lattice gauge theories with the $θ$ parameter

We study a four-dimensional $U(1)$ gauge theory with the $θ$ angle, which was originally proposed by Cardy and Rabinovici. It is known that the model has the rich phase diagram thanks to the presence of both electrically and magnetically charged particles. We discuss the topological nature of the oblique confinement phase of the model at $θ=π$, and show how its appearance can be consistent with the anomaly constraint. We also construct the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ self-dual theory out of the Cardy-Rabinovici model by gauging a part of its one-form symmetry. This self-duality has a mixed 't Hooft anomaly with gravity, and its implications on the phase diagram is uncovered. As the model shares the same global symmetry and 't Hooft anomaly with those of $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory, studying its topological aspects would provide us more hints to explore possible dynamics of non-Abelian gauge theories with nonzero $θ$ angles.

Finite-Density Massless Two-Color QCD at Isospin Roberge-Weiss Point and 't Hooft Anomaly

We study the phase diagram of two-flavor massless two-color QCD (QC$_2$D) under the presence of quark chemical potentials and imaginary isospin chemical potentials. At the special point of the imaginary isospin chemical potential, called the isospin Roberge--Weiss (RW) point, two-flavor QC$_2$D enjoys the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ center symmetry that acts on both quark flavors and the Polyakov loop. We find a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ 't Hooft anomaly of this system, which involves the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ center symmetry, the baryon-number symmetry, and the isospin chiral symmetry. Anomaly matching, therefore, constrains the possible phase diagram at any temperatures and quark chemical potentials at the isospin RW point, and we compare it with previous results obtained by chiral effective field theory and lattice simulations. We also point out an interesting similarity of two-flavor massless QC$_2$D with $(2+1)$d quantum anti-ferromagnetic systems.

Deconfinement and CP-breaking at $θ=π$ in Yang-Mills theories and a novel phase for SU(2)

We discuss the deconfinement and the CP-breaking phase transitions at $θ=π$ in Yang-Mills theories. The 't Hooft anomaly matching prohibits the confined phase with CP symmetry and requires $T_{dec}(θ=π) \le T_{CP}$, where $T_{dec}(θ=π)$ and $T_{CP}$ denote the deconfinement and the CP-restoration temperatures, respectively, at $θ=π$. We analytically study these two phase transitions in softly-broken $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories on small $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ with the periodic boundary condition for gluinos. For most gauge groups except SU(2) in this model, we find that the inequality is saturated, so deconfinement and CP restoration occur simultaneously. We demonstrate special features of the SU(2) gauge theory: There is a finite window of two temperatures, $T_{dec}(π)<T_{CP}$, which indicates the existence of a novel CP-broken deconfined phase. We also discuss an implication of the novel phase for domain walls and their junctions.

Universality between vector-like and chiral quiver gauge theories: Anomalies and domain walls

We study low-energy dynamics of $[SU(N)]^K$ chiral quiver gauge theories in connection with $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, and quantum chromodynamics with bi-fundamental fermions (QCD(BF)). These theories can be obtained by $\mathbb{Z}_K$ orbifold projections of $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(NK)$ SYM theory, but the perturbative planar equivalence does not extend nonperturbatively for $K\ge 3$. In order to study low-energy behaviors, we analyze these systems using 't~Hooft anomaly matching and reliable semiclassics on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$. Thanks to 't~Hooft anomaly that involves $1$-form center symmetry and discrete chiral symmetry, we predict that chiral symmetry must be spontaneously broken in the confinement phase, and there exist $N$ vacua. Theories with even $K$ possess a physical $θ$ angle despite the presence of massless fermions, and we further predict the $N$-branch structure associated with it; the number of vacua is enhanced to $2N$ at $θ=π$ due to spontaneous $CP$ breaking. Both of these predictions are explicitly confirmed by reliable semiclassics on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ with the double-trace deformation. Symmetry and anomaly of odd-$K$ theories are the same as those of the ${\cal N}=1$ SYM, and the ones of even-$K$ theories are same as those of QCD(BF). We unveil why there exists universality between vector-like and chiral quiver theories, and conjecture that their ground states can be continuously deformed without quantum phase transitions. We briefly discuss anomaly inflow on the domain walls connecting the vacua of the theory and possible anomaly matching scenarios.

Anomalies, a mod 2 index, and dynamics of 2d adjoint QCD

We show that $2$d adjoint QCD, an $SU(N)$ gauge theory with one massless adjoint Majorana fermion, has a variety of mixed 't Hooft anomalies. The anomalies are derived using a recent mod $2$ index theorem and its generalization that incorporates 't Hooft flux. Anomaly matching and dynamical considerations are used to determine the ground-state structure of the theory. The anomalies, which are present for most values of $N$, are matched by spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. We find that massless $2$d adjoint QCD confines for $N >2$, except for test charges of $N$-ality $N/2$, which are deconfined. In other words, $\mathbb Z_N$ center symmetry is unbroken for odd $N$ and spontaneously broken to $\mathbb Z_{N/2}$ for even $N$. All of these results are confirmed by explicit calculations on small $\mathbb{R}\times S^1$. We also show that this non-supersymmetric theory exhibits exact Bose-Fermi degeneracies for all states, including the vacua, when $N$ is even. Furthermore, for most values of $N$, $2$d massive adjoint QCD describes a non-trivial symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase of matter, including certain cases where the number of interacting Majorana fermions is a multiple of $8$. As a result, it fits into the classification of $(1+1)$d SPT phases of interacting Majorana fermions in an interesting way.

Modified instanton sum in QCD and higher-groups

We consider the $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory, whose topological sectors are restricted to the instanton number with integer multiples of $p$. We can formulate such a quantum field theory maintaining locality and unitarity, and the model contains both $2π$-periodic scalar and $3$-form gauge fields. This can be interpreted as coupling a topological theory to Yang-Mills theory, so the local dynamics becomes identical with that of pure Yang-Mills theory. The theory has not only $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $1$-form symmetry but also $\mathbb{Z}_p$ $3$-form symmetry, and we study the global nature of this theory from the recent 't Hooft anomaly matching. The computation of 't Hooft anomaly incorporates an intriguing higher-group structure. We also carefully examine that how such kinematical constraint is realized in the dynamics by using the large-$N$ and also the reliable semiclassics on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$, and we find that the topological susceptibility plays a role of the order parameter for the $\mathbb{Z}_p$ $3$-form symmetry. Introducing a fermion in the fundamental or adjoint representation, we find that the chiral symmetry becomes larger than the usual case by $\mathbb{Z}_p$, and it leads to the extra $p$ vacua by discrete chiral symmetry breaking. No dynamical domain wall can interpolate those extra vacua since such objects must be charged under the $3$-form symmetry in order to match the 't Hooft anomaly.

Lattice gauge theory for Haldane conjecture and central-branch Wilson fermion

We develop the $(1+1)$d lattice $U(1)$ gauge theory in order to define $2$-flavor massless Schwinger model, and discuss its connection with Haldane conjecture. We propose to use the central-branch Wilson fermion, which is defined by relating the mass, $m$, and the Wilson parameter, $r$, as $m+2r=0$. This setup gives two massless Dirac fermions in the continuum limit, and it turns out that no fine-tuning of $m$ is required because the extra $U(1)$ symmetry at the central branch, $U(1)_{\bar{V}}$, prohibits the additive mass renormalization. Moreover, we show that Dirac determinant is positive semi-definite and this formulation is free from the sign problem, so the Monte Carlo simulation of the path integral is possible. By identifying the symmetry at low energy, we show that this lattice model has the mixed 't Hooft anomaly between $U(1)_{\bar{V}}$, lattice translation, and lattice rotation. We discuss its relation to the anomaly of half-integer anti-ferromagnetic spin chains, so our lattice gauge theory is suitable for numerical simulation of Haldane conjecture. Furthermore, it gives new and strict understanding on parity-broken phase (Aoki phase) of $2$d Wilson fermion.

Topological order in a color-flavor locked phase of $(3+1)$-dimensional $U(N)$ gauge-Higgs system

We study a $(3+1)$-dimensional $U(N)$ gauge theory with $N$-flavor fundamental scalar fields, whose color-flavor locked (CFL) phase has topologically stable non-Abelian vortices. The $U(1)$ charge of the scalar fields must be $Nk+1$ for some integer $k$ in order for them to be in the representation of $U(N)$ gauge group. This theory has a $\mathbb{Z}_{Nk+1}$ one-form symmetry, and it is spontaneously broken in the CFL phase, i.e., the CFL phase is topologically ordered if $k\not=0$. We also find that the world sheet of topologically stable vortices in CFL phase can generate this one-form symmetry.

Fractional $θ$ angle, 't Hooft anomaly, and quantum instantons in charge-$q$ multi-flavor Schwinger model

This work examines non-perturbative dynamics of a $2$-dimensional QFT by using discrete 't Hooft anomaly, semi-classics with circle compactification and bosonization. We focus on charge-$q$ $N$-flavor Schwinger model, and also Wess-Zumino-Witten model. We first apply the recent developments of discrete 't Hooft anomaly matching to theories on $\mathbb{R}^2$ and its compactification to $\mathbb{R} \times S^1_L$. We then compare the 't Hooft anomaly with dynamics of the models by explicitly constructing eigenstates and calculating physical quantities on the cylinder spacetime with periodic and flavor-twisted boundary conditions. We find different boundary conditions realize different anomalies. Especially under the twisted boundary conditions, there are $Nq$ vacua associated with discrete chiral symmetry breaking. Chiral condensates for this case have fractional $θ$ dependence $\mathrm{e}^{\mathrm{i} θ/Nq}$, which provides the $Nq$-branch structure with soft fermion mass. We show that these behaviors at a small circumference cannot be explained by usual instantons but should be understood by "quantum" instantons, which saturate the BPS bound between classical action and quantum-induced effective potential. The effects of the quantum-instantons match the exact results obtained via bosonization within the region of applicability of semi-classics. We also argue that large-$N$ limit of the Schwinger model with twisted boundary conditions satisfy volume independence.

Effective gauge theories of superfluidity with topological order

We discuss the low-energy dynamics of superfluidity with topological order in $(3+1)$ spacetime dimensions. We generalize a topological $BF$ theory by introducing a non-square $K$ matrix, and this generalized $BF$ theory can describe massless Nambu-Goldstone bosons and anyonic statistics between vortices and quasiparticles. We discuss the general structure of discrete and continuous higher-form symmetries in this theory, which can be used to classify quantum phases. We describe how to identify the appearance of topological order in such systems and discuss its relation to a mixed 't Hooft anomaly between discrete higher-form symmetries. We apply this framework to the color-flavor locked phase of dense QCD, which shows anyonic particle-vortex statistics while no topological order appears. An explicit example of superfluidity with topological order is discussed.

High-temperature domain walls of QCD with imaginary chemical potentials

We study QCD with massless quarks on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ under symmetry-twisted boundary conditions with small compactification radius, i.e. at high temperatures. Under suitable boundary conditions, the theory acquires a part of the center symmetry and it is spontaneously broken at high temperatures. We show that these vacua at high temperatures can be regarded as different symmetry-protected topological orders, and the domain walls between them support nontrivial massless gauge theories as a consequence of anomaly-inflow mechanism. At sufficiently high temperatures, we can perform the semiclassical analysis to obtain the domain-wall theory, and $2$d $U(N_\mathrm{c}-1)$ gauge theories with massless fermions match the 't~Hooft anomaly. We perform these analysis for the high-temperature domain wall of $\mathbb{Z}_{N_\mathrm{c}}$-QCD and also of Roberge-Weiss phase transitions.

Quark-hadron continuity beyond Ginzburg-Landau paradigm

Quark-hadron continuity is a scenario that hadronic matter is continuously connected to color superconductor without phase transitions as the baryon chemical potential increases. This scenario is based on Landau's classification of phases since they have the same symmetry breaking pattern. We address the question whether this continuity is true as quantum phases of matter, which requires the treatment beyond Ginzburg-Landau description. To examine the topological nature of color superconductor, we derive a dual effective theory for $U(1)$ Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons and vortices of the color-flavor locked phase, and discuss the fate of emergent higher-form symmetries. The theory has the form of a topological $BF$ theory coupled to NG bosons, and fractional statistics of test quarks and vortices arises as a result of an emergent $\mathbb Z_3$ two-form symmetry. We find that this symmetry cannot be spontaneously broken, indicating that quark-hadron continuity is still a consistent scenario.

Phase structure of the twisted $SU(3)/U(1)^2$ flag sigma model on $\mathbb{R}\times S^1$

We investigate the phase structure of the compactified $2$-dimensional nonlinear $SU(3)/U(1)^2$ flag sigma model with respect to two $θ$-terms. Based on the circle compactification with the ${\mathbb Z}_{3}$-twisted boundary condition, which preserves an 't Hooft anomaly of the original uncompactified theory, we perform the semiclassical analysis based on the dilute instanton gas approximation (DIGA). We clarify classical vacua of the theory and derive fractional instanton solutions connecting these vacua. The resulting phase structure based on DIGA exhibits the quantum phase transitions and triple degeneracy at special points in the $(θ_1,θ_2)$-plane, which is consistent with the phase diagram obtained from the anomaly matching and global inconsistency conditions. This result indicates the adiabatic continuity between the flag sigma models on ${\mathbb R}^{2}$ and ${\mathbb R}\times S^{1}$ with small compactification radius. We further estimate contributions from instanton--anti-instanton configuration (bion) and show the existence of the imaginary ambiguity, which is expected to be cancelled by that of the perturbative Borel resummation.

Anomaly and global inconsistency matching: $θ$-angles, $SU(3)/U(1)^2$ nonlinear sigma model, $SU(3)$ chains and its generalizations

We discuss the $SU(3)/[U(1)\times U(1)]$ nonlinear sigma model in 1+1D and, more broadly, its linearized counterparts. Such theories can be expressed as $U(1)\times U(1)$ gauge theories and therefore allow for two topological $θ$-angles. These models provide a field theoretic description of the $SU(3)$ chains. We show that, for particular values of $θ$-angles, a global symmetry group of such systems has a 't Hooft anomaly, which manifests itself as an inability to gauge the global symmetry group. By applying anomaly matching, the ground-state properties can be severely constrained. The anomaly matching is an avatar of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem for the spin chain from which the field theory descends, and it forbids a trivially gapped ground state for particular $θ$-angles. We generalize the statement of the LSM theorem and show that 't Hooft anomalies persist even under perturbations which break the spin-symmetry down to the discrete subgroup $\mathbb Z_3\times\mathbb Z_3\subset SU(3)/\mathbb Z_3$. In addition the model can further be constrained by applying global inconsistency matching, which indicates the presence of a phase transition between different regions of $θ$-angles. We use these constraints to give possible scenarios of the phase diagram. We also argue that at the special points of the phase diagram the anomalies are matched by the $SU(3)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. We generalize the discussion to the $SU(N)/U(1)^{N-1}$ nonlinear sigma models as well as the 't Hooft anomaly of the $SU(N)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model, and show that they match. Finally the $(2+1)$-dimensional extension is considered briefly, and we show that it has various 't Hooft anomalies leading to nontrivial consequences.

Anomaly constraint on massless QCD and the role of Skyrmions in chiral symmetry breaking

We discuss consequences of the 't Hooft anomaly matching condition for Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) with massless fundamental quarks. We derive the new discrete 't Hooft anomaly of massless QCD for generic numbers of color $N_\mathrm{c}$ and flavor $N_\mathrm{f}$, and an exotic chiral-symmetry broken phase without quark-bilinear condensate is ruled out from possible QCD vacua. We show that the $U(1)_\mathrm{B}$ baryon number symmetry is anomalously broken when the $(\mathbb{Z}_{2N_\mathrm{f}})_\mathrm{A}$ discrete axial symmetry and the flavor symmetry are gauged. In the ordinary chiral symmetry breaking, the Skyrmion current turns out to reproduce this 't Hooft anomaly of massless QCD. In the exotic chiral symmetry breaking, however, the anomalous breaking of $U(1)_\mathrm{B}$ does not take the correct form, and it is inconsistent with anomaly matching. This no-go theorem is based only on symmetries and anomalies, and thus has a wider range of applicability to the QCD phase diagram than the previous one obtained by QCD inequalities. Lastly, as another application, we check that duality of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric QCD with $N_\mathrm{f}\ge N_\mathrm{c}+1$ satisfies the new anomaly matching.

Giant photocurrent in asymmetric Weyl semimetals from the helical magnetic effect

We propose a new type of photoresponse induced in asymmetric Weyl semimetals in an external magnetic field. In usual symmetric Weyl semimetals in a magnetic field, the particles and holes produced by an incident light in different Weyl cones have opposite helicities and hence move in opposite directions, canceling each others's contributions to the photocurrent. However this cancelation does not occur if the Weyl semimetal possesses both a broken particle-hole symmetry and a broken spatial inversion symmetry. We call the resulting generation of photocurrent the helical magnetic effect because it is induced by the helicity imbalance in a magnetic field. We find that due to the large density of states in a magnetic field, the helical magnetic effect induces a remarkable large photocurrent for incident THz frequency light. This suggests a potential application of asymmetric Weyl semimetals for creating THz photosensors.
