Steering topology distributions for unified generative design of architected metamaterials

Architected metamaterials derive their functions from structure, creating vast opportunities to program physical responses through topology design. However, existing design methods are often tailored to individual design problems, making limited use of topology knowledge for effective and broadly applicable design as objectives, constraints, and physical functions change. Here we introduce Generative Topology Optimization (GenTO), a unified framework that turns a learned topology prior into a reusable design engine. GenTO trains a diffusion model on a large full-order topology dataset and then iteratively steers the resulting topology distribution toward task-specific high-performing regions using user-defined physical objectives and constraints. This shifts the object of optimization from a single structure to a task-adapted topology distribution. Across topology design problems spanning thermal extremization, multi-objective morphology control, property-targeted auxetic design, and vibration transmission design, GenTO reuses pretrained topology priors for heterogeneous tasks, preserves structural diversity, and reaches high-performing solutions supported by numerical benchmarks and experimental validation. These results establish reusable topology knowledge as a unified principle for effective and scalable architected metamaterial design.

BOOKAGENT: Orchestrating Safety-Aware Visual Narratives via Multi-Agent Cognitive Calibration

Recent advancements in Large Generative Models (LGMs) have revolutionized multi-modal generation. However, generating illustrated storybooks remains an open challenge, where prior works mainly decompose this task into separate stages, and thus, holistic multi-modal grounding remains limited. Besides, while safety alignment is studied for text- or image-only generation, existing works rarely integrate child-specific safety constraints into narrative planning and sequence-level multi-modal verification. To address these limitations, we propose BookAgent, a safety-aware multi-agent collaboration framework designed for high-quality, safety-aware visual narratives. Different from prior story visualization models that assume a fixed storyline sequence, BookAgent targets end-to-end storybook synthesis from a user draft by jointly planning, scripting, illustrating, and globally repairing inconsistencies. To ensure precise multi-modal grounding, BookAgent dynamically calibrates page-level alignment between textual scripts and visual layouts. Furthermore, BookAgent calibrates holistic consistency from the temporal dimension, by verifying-then-rectifying global inconsistencies in character identity and storytelling logic. Extensive experiments demonstrate that BookAgent significantly outperforms current methods in narrative coherence, visual consistency, and safety compliance, offering a robust paradigm for reliable agents in complex multi-modal creation. The implementation will be publicly released at https://github.com/bogao-code/BookAgent/tree/main.

Strategic Learning with Asymmetric Rationality

This paper analyzes a dynamic interaction between a fully rational, privately informed sender and a boundedly rational, uninformed receiver with memory constraints. The sender controls the flow of information, while the receiver designs a decision-making protocol that uses a finite state space to learn and to provide incentives. We characterize optimal protocols and quantify the scope for manipulation and the incentive cost of guarding against it. We show that distinctive behavioral patterns that might otherwise appear erratic or psychologically driven -- such as information disengagement, opinion polarization conditional on the same information, and indecision near the decision point -- emerge as systematic equilibrium responses to asymmetric rationality and information. The model provides an expressive framework for procedural rationality in strategic settings.

This report presents a comprehensive analysis of an unsupervised multi-expert machine learning framework for detecting short ticketing fraud in railway systems. The study introduces an A/B/C/D station classification system that successfully identifies suspicious patterns across 30 high-risk stations. The framework employs four complementary algorithms: Isolation Forest, Local Outlier Factor, One-Class SVM, and Mahalanobis Distance. Key findings include the identification of five distinct short ticketing patterns and potential for short ticketing recovery in transportation systems.

Versatile Cardiovascular Signal Generation with a Unified Diffusion Transformer

Cardiovascular signals such as photoplethysmography (PPG), electrocardiography (ECG), and blood pressure (BP) are inherently correlated and complementary, together reflecting the health of cardiovascular system. However, their joint utilization in real-time monitoring is severely limited by diverse acquisition challenges from noisy wearable recordings to burdened invasive procedures. Here we propose UniCardio, a multi-modal diffusion transformer that reconstructs low-quality signals and synthesizes unrecorded signals in a unified generative framework. Its key innovations include a specialized model architecture to manage the signal modalities involved in generation tasks and a continual learning paradigm to incorporate varying modality combinations. By exploiting the complementary nature of cardiovascular signals, UniCardio clearly outperforms recent task-specific baselines in signal denoising, imputation, and translation. The generated signals match the performance of ground-truth signals in detecting abnormal health conditions and estimating vital signs, even in unseen domains, while ensuring interpretability for human experts. These advantages position UniCardio as a promising avenue for advancing AI-assisted healthcare.

Finite-PINN: A Physics-Informed Neural Network with Finite Geometric Encoding for Solid Mechanics

PINN models have demonstrated capabilities in addressing fluid PDE problems, and their potential in solid mechanics is beginning to emerge. This study identifies two key challenges when using PINN to solve general solid mechanics problems. These challenges become evident when comparing the limitations of PINN with the well-established numerical methods commonly used in solid mechanics, such as the finite element method (FEM). Specifically: a) PINN models generate solutions over an infinite domain, which conflicts with the finite boundaries typical of most solid structures; and b) the solution space utilised by PINN is Euclidean, which is inadequate for addressing the complex geometries often present in solid structures. This work presents a PINN architecture for general solid mechanics problems, referred to as the Finite-PINN model. The model is designed to effectively tackle two key challenges, while retaining as much of the original PINN framework as possible. To this end, the Finite-PINN incorporates finite geometric encoding into the neural network inputs, thereby transforming the solution space from a conventional Euclidean space into a hybrid Euclidean-topological space. The model is comprehensively trained using both strong-form and weak-form loss formulations, enabling its application to a wide range of forward and inverse problems in solid mechanics. For forward problems, the Finite-PINN model efficiently approximates solutions to solid mechanics problems when the geometric information of a given structure has been preprocessed. For inverse problems, it effectively reconstructs full-field solutions from very sparse observations by embedding both physical laws and geometric information within its architecture.

RespDiff: An End-to-End Multi-scale RNN Diffusion Model for Respiratory Waveform Estimation from PPG Signals

Respiratory rate (RR) is a critical health indicator often monitored under inconvenient scenarios, limiting its practicality for continuous monitoring. Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors, increasingly integrated into wearable devices, offer a chance to continuously estimate RR in a portable manner. In this paper, we propose RespDiff, an end-to-end multi-scale RNN diffusion model for respiratory waveform estimation from PPG signals. RespDiff does not require hand-crafted features or the exclusion of low-quality signal segments, making it suitable for real-world scenarios. The model employs multi-scale encoders, to extract features at different resolutions, and a bidirectional RNN to process PPG signals and extract respiratory waveform. Additionally, a spectral loss term is introduced to optimize the model further. Experiments conducted on the BIDMC dataset demonstrate that RespDiff outperforms notable previous works, achieving a mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.18 bpm for RR estimation while others range from 1.66 to 2.15 bpm, showing its potential for robust and accurate respiratory monitoring in real-world applications.

Amplitude-Independent Machine Learning for PPG through Visibility Graphs and Transfer Learning

Photoplethysmography (PPG) refers to the measurement of variations in blood volume using light and is a feature of most wearable devices. The PPG signals provide insight into the body's circulatory system and can be employed to extract various bio-features, such as heart rate and vascular ageing. Although several algorithms have been proposed for this purpose, many exhibit limitations, including heavy reliance on human calibration, high signal quality requirements, and a lack of generalisation. In this paper, we introduce a PPG signal processing framework that integrates graph theory and computer vision algorithms, to provide an analysis framework which is amplitude-independent and invariant to affine transformations. It also requires minimal preprocessing, fuses information through RGB channels and exhibits robust generalisation across tasks and datasets. The proposed VGTL-net achieves state-of-the-art performance in the prediction of vascular ageing and demonstrates robust estimation of continuous blood pressure waveforms.

GPINN: Physics-informed Neural Network with Graph Embedding

This work proposes a Physics-informed Neural Network framework with Graph Embedding (GPINN) to perform PINN in graph, i.e. topological space instead of traditional Euclidean space, for improved problem-solving efficiency. The method integrates topological data into the neural network's computations, which significantly boosts the performance of the Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN). The graph embedding technique infuses extra dimensions into the input space to encapsulate the spatial characteristics of a graph while preserving the properties of the original space. The selection of these extra dimensions is guided by the Fiedler vector, offering an optimised pathologic notation of the graph. Two case studies are conducted, which demonstrate significant improvement in the performance of GPINN in comparison to traditional PINN, particularly in its superior ability to capture physical features of the solution.

Hyper-GST: Predict Metro Passenger Flow Incorporating GraphSAGE, Hypergraph, Social-meaningful Edge Weights and Temporal Exploitation

Predicting metro passenger flow precisely is of great importance for dynamic traffic planning. Deep learning algorithms have been widely applied due to their robust performance in modelling non-linear systems. However, traditional deep learning algorithms completely discard the inherent graph structure within the metro system. Graph-based deep learning algorithms could utilise the graph structure but raise a few challenges, such as how to determine the weights of the edges and the shallow receptive field caused by the over-smoothing issue. To further improve these challenges, this study proposes a model based on GraphSAGE with an edge weights learner applied. The edge weights learner utilises socially meaningful features to generate edge weights. Hypergraph and temporal exploitation modules are also constructed as add-ons for better performance. A comparison study is conducted on the proposed algorithm and other state-of-art graph neural networks, where the proposed algorithm could improve the performance.
