MoConVQ: Unified Physics-Based Motion Control via Scalable Discrete Representations

In this work, we present MoConVQ, a novel unified framework for physics-based motion control leveraging scalable discrete representations. Building upon vector quantized variational autoencoders (VQ-VAE) and model-based reinforcement learning, our approach effectively learns motion embeddings from a large, unstructured dataset spanning tens of hours of motion examples. The resultant motion representation not only captures diverse motion skills but also offers a robust and intuitive interface for various applications. We demonstrate the versatility of MoConVQ through several applications: universal tracking control from various motion sources, interactive character control with latent motion representations using supervised learning, physics-based motion generation from natural language descriptions using the GPT framework, and, most interestingly, seamless integration with large language models (LLMs) with in-context learning to tackle complex and abstract tasks.

The Proximal Operator of the Piece-wise Exponential Function and Its Application in Compressed Sensing

This paper characterizes the proximal operator of the piece-wise exponential function $1\!-\!e^{-|x|/σ}$ with a given shape parameter $σ\!>\!0$, which is a popular nonconvex surrogate of $\ell_0$-norm in support vector machines, zero-one programming problems, and compressed sensing, etc. Although Malek-Mohammadi et al. [IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 64(21):5657--5671, 2016] once worked on this problem, the expressions they derived were regrettably inaccurate. In a sense, it was lacking a case. Using the Lambert W function and an extensive study of the piece-wise exponential function, we have rectified the formulation of the proximal operator of the piece-wise exponential function in light of their work. We have also undertaken a thorough analysis of this operator. Finally, as an application in compressed sensing, an iterative shrinkage and thresholding algorithm (ISTA) for the piece-wise exponential function regularization problem is developed and fully investigated. A comparative study of ISTA with nine popular non-convex penalties in compressed sensing demonstrates the advantage of the piece-wise exponential penalty.

An Improved Equiangular Division Algorithm for SBR based Ray Tracing Channel Modeling

Compared with image method (IM) based ray tracing (RT), shooting and bouncing ray (SBR) method is characterized by fast speed but low accuracy. In this paper, an iterative precise algorithm based on equiangular division is proposed to make rough paths accurate, allowing SBR to calculate exact channel information. Different ray launching methods are compared to obtain a better launching method. By using equiangular division, rays are launched more uniformly from transmitter (Tx) compared with the current equidistant division method. With the proposed iterative precise algorithm, error of angle of departure (AOD) and angle of arrival (AOA) is below 0.01 degree. The relationship between the number of iterations and error reduction is also given. It is illustrated that the proposed method has the same accuracy as IM by comparing the power delay profile (PDP) and angle distribution of paths. This can solve the problem of low accuracy brougth by SBR.

A Quantitative Framework for Network Resilience Evaluation using Dynamic Bayesian Network

Measuring and evaluating network resilience has become an important aspect since the network is vulnerable to both uncertain disturbances and malicious attacks. Networked systems are often composed of many dynamic components and change over time, which makes it difficult for existing methods to access the changeable situation of network resilience. This paper establishes a novel quantitative framework for evaluating network resilience using the Dynamic Bayesian Network. The proposed framework can be used to evaluate the network's multi-stage resilience processes when suffering various attacks and recoveries. First, we define the dynamic capacities of network components and establish the network's five core resilience capabilities to describe the resilient networking stages including preparation, resistance, adaptation, recovery, and evolution; the five core resilience capabilities consist of rapid response capability, sustained resistance capability, continuous running capability, rapid convergence capability, and dynamic evolution capability. Then, we employ a two-time slices approach based on the Dynamic Bayesian Network to quantify five crucial performances of network resilience based on core capabilities proposed above. The proposed approach can ensure the time continuity of resilience evaluation in time-varying networks. Finally, our proposed evaluation framework is applied to different attacks and recovery conditions in typical simulations and real-world network topology. Results and comparisons with extant studies indicate that the proposed method can achieve a more accurate and comprehensive evaluation and can be applied to network scenarios under various attack and recovery intensities.

Building an Efficient Intrusion Detection System Based on Feature Selection and Ensemble Classifier

Intrusion detection system (IDS) is one of extensively used techniques in a network topology to safeguard the integrity and availability of sensitive assets in the protected systems. Although many supervised and unsupervised learning approaches from the field of machine learning have been used to increase the efficacy of IDSs, it is still a problem for existing intrusion detection algorithms to achieve good performance. First, lots of redundant and irrelevant data in high-dimensional datasets interfere with the classification process of an IDS. Second, an individual classifier may not perform well in the detection of each type of attacks. Third, many models are built for stale datasets, making them less adaptable for novel attacks. Thus, we propose a new intrusion detection framework in this paper, and this framework is based on the feature selection and ensemble learning techniques. In the first step, a heuristic algorithm called CFS-BA is proposed for dimensionality reduction, which selects the optimal subset based on the correlation between features. Then, we introduce an ensemble approach that combines C4.5, Random Forest (RF), and Forest by Penalizing Attributes (Forest PA) algorithms. Finally, voting technique is used to combine the probability distributions of the base learners for attack recognition. The experimental results, using NSL-KDD, AWID, and CIC-IDS2017 datasets, reveal that the proposed CFS-BA-Ensemble method is able to exhibit better performance than other related and state of the art approaches under several metrics.

Evidence for the Cross-correlation between Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization Lensing from POLARBEAR and Cosmic Shear from Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam

We present the first measurement of cross-correlation between the lensing potential, reconstructed from cosmic microwave background (CMB) {\it polarization} data, and the cosmic shear field from galaxy shapes. This measurement is made using data from the POLARBEAR CMB experiment and the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. By analyzing an 11~deg$^2$ overlapping region, we reject the null hypothesis at 3.5$σ$\ and constrain the amplitude of the {\bf cross-spectrum} to $\widehat{A}_{\rm lens}=1.70\pm 0.48$, where $\widehat{A}_{\rm lens}$ is the amplitude normalized with respect to the Planck~2018{} prediction, based on the flat $Λ$ cold dark matter cosmology. The first measurement of this {\bf cross-spectrum} without relying on CMB temperature measurements is possible due to the deep POLARBEAR map with a noise level of ${\sim}$6\,$μ$K-arcmin, as well as the deep HSC data with a high galaxy number density of $n_g=23\,{\rm arcmin^{-2}}$. We present a detailed study of the systematics budget to show that residual systematics in our results are negligibly small, which demonstrates the future potential of this cross-correlation technique.

A Cost-effective Shuffling Method against DDoS Attacks using Moving Target Defense

Moving Target Defense (MTD) has emerged as a newcomer into the asymmetric field of attack and defense, and shuffling-based MTD has been regarded as one of the most effective ways to mitigate DDoS attacks. However, previous work does not acknowledge that frequent shuffles would significantly intensify the overhead. MTD requires a quantitative measure to compare the cost and effectiveness of available adaptations and explore the best trade-off between them. In this paper, therefore, we propose a new cost-effective shuffling method against DDoS attacks using MTD. By exploiting Multi-Objective Markov Decision Processes to model the interaction between the attacker and the defender, and designing a cost-effective shuffling algorithm, we study the best trade-off between the effectiveness and cost of shuffling in a given shuffling scenario. Finally, simulation and experimentation on an experimental software defined network (SDN) indicate that our approach imposes an acceptable shuffling overload and is effective in mitigating DDoS attacks.
