Engineering phase-frustration induced flat bands in an aza-triangulene covalent Kagome lattice

Pi-conjugated covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provide a versatile platform for the realization of designer quantum nanomaterials. Strong electron-electron correlation within these artificial lattices can give rise to exotic phases of matter. Their experimental realization however requires precise control over orbital symmetry, charge localization, and band dispersion all arising from the effective hybridization between molecular linkers and nodes. Here, we present a modular strategy for constructing diatomic Kagome lattices from aza-[3]triangulene (A[3]T) nodes, in which a D3h symmetric ground state is stabilized through resonance contributions from a cumulenenic linker. First-principles density-functional theory and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy reveal that the hybridization of a sixfold degenerate set of edge-localized Wannier functions in the unit cell gives rise to orbital-phase frustration-induced non-trivial flat bands. These results establish a general design principle for engineering orbital interactions in organic lattices and open a pathway toward programmable COF-based quantum materials with correlated electronic ground states.

Triangle Counting Rule: An Approach to Forecast the Magnetic Properties of Benzenoid Polycyclic Hydrocarbons

Open-shell benzenoid polycyclic hydrocarbons (BPHs) are promising materials for future quantum applications. However, the search and realization of open-shell BPHs with desired properties is a challenging task due to the gigantic chemical space of BPHs, requiring new strategies for both theoretical understanding and experimental advancement. In this work, by building a structure database of BPHs through graphical enumeration, performing data-driven analysis, and combining tight-binding and mean-field Hubbard calculations, we discovered that the number of the internal vertices of the BPH graphs is closely correlated to their open-shell characters. We further established a series of simple rules, the triangle counting rule (TCR), to predict the magnetic ground state of BPHs. These findings not only provide a database of open-shell BPHs, but also extend the well-known Lieb's theorem and Ovchinnikov's rule and provide a straightforward method for designing open-shell carbon nanostructures. These insights may aid in the exploration of emerging quantum phases and the development of magnetic carbon materials for technology applications.

Pulse-regulated single-photon generation via quantum interference in a $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear nanocavity

A scalable on-chip single-photon source at telecommunications wavelengths is an essential component of quantum communication networks. In this work, we numerically construct a pulse-regulated single-photon source based on an optical parametric amplifier in a nanocavity. Under the condition of pulsed excitation, we study the photon statistics of the source using the Monte Carlo wave-function method. The results show that there exits an optimum excitation pulse width for generating high-purity single photons, while the source brightness increases monotonically with increasing excitation pulse width. More importantly, our system can be operated resonantly and we show that in this case the oscillations in $g^{(2)}(0)$ is completely suppressed.
