Instantaneous phase synchronization of two decoupled quantum limit-cycle oscillators induced by conditional photon detection

We show that conditional photon detection induces instantaneous phase synchronization between two decoupled quantum limit-cycle oscillators. We consider two quantum van der Pol oscillators without mutual coupling, each with an additional linearly coupled bath, and perform continuous measurement of photon counting on the output fields of the two baths interacting through a beam splitter. It is observed that in-phase or anti-phase coherence of the two decoupled oscillators instantaneously increases after the photon detection and then decreases gradually in the weak quantum regime or quickly in the strong quantum regime until the next photon detection occurs. In the strong quantum regime, quantum entanglement also increases after the photon detection and quickly disappears. We derive the analytical upper bounds for the increases in the quantum entanglement and phase coherence by the conditional photon detection in the quantum limit.

Enhancement of quantum synchronization via continuous measurement and feedback control

We study synchronization of a quantum van der Pol oscillator with a harmonic drive and demonstrate that quantum synchronization can be enhanced by performing continuous homodyne measurement on an additional bath linearly coupled to the oscillator and applying feedback control to the oscillator. The phase coherence of the oscillator is increased by reducing quantum fluctuations via the continuous measurement, whereas the measurement backaction inevitably induces fluctuations around the phase-locking point. We propose a simple feedback policy for suppressing measurement-induced fluctuations by adjusting the frequency of the harmonic drive, which results in enhancement of quantum synchronization. We further demonstrate that the maximum enhancement of quantum synchronization is achieved by performing quantum measurement on the quadrature angle at which the phase diffusion of the oscillator is the largest and the maximal information of the oscillator phase is extracted.

Semiclassical optimization of entrainment stability and phase coherence in weakly forced quantum limit-cycle oscillators

Optimal entrainment of a quantum nonlinear oscillator to a periodically modulated weak harmonic drive is studied in the semiclassical regime. By using the semiclassical phase reduction theory recently developed for quantum nonlinear oscillators, two types of optimization problems, one for the stability and the other for the phase coherence of the entrained state, are considered. The optimal waveforms of the periodic amplitude modulation can be derived by applying the classical optimization methods to the semiclassical phase equation that approximately describes the quantum limit-cycle dynamics. Using a quantum van der Pol oscillator with squeezing and Kerr effects as an example, the performance of optimization is numerically analyzed. It is shown that the optimized waveform for the entrainment stability yields faster entrainment to the driving signal than the case with a simple sinusoidal waveform, while that for the phase coherence yields little improvement from the sinusoidal case. These results are explained from the properties of the phase sensitivity function.

Semiclassical Phase Reduction Theory for Quantum Synchronization

We develop a general theoretical framework of semiclassical phase reduction for analyzing synchronization of quantum limit-cycle oscillators. The dynamics of quantum dissipative systems exhibiting limit-cycle oscillations are reduced to a simple, one-dimensional classical stochastic differential equation approximately describing the phase dynamics of the system under the semiclassical approximation. The density matrix and power spectrum of the original quantum system can be approximately reconstructed from the reduced phase equation. The developed framework enables us to analyze synchronization dynamics of quantum limit-cycle oscillators using the standard methods for classical limit-cycle oscillators in a quantitative way. As an example, we analyze synchronization of a quantum van der Pol oscillator under harmonic driving and squeezing, including the case that the squeezing is strong and the oscillation is asymmetric. The developed framework provides insights into the relation between quantum and classical synchronization and will facilitate systematic analysis and control of quantum nonlinear oscillators.

Optimization of linear and nonlinear interaction schemes for stable synchronization of weakly coupled limit-cycle oscillators

Optimization of mutual synchronization between a pair of limit-cycle oscillators with weak symmetric coupling is considered in the framework of the phase reduction theory. By generalizing a previous study on the optimization of cross-diffusion coupling matrices between the oscillators, we consider optimization of mutual coupling signals to maximize the linear stability of the synchronized state, which are functionals of the past time sequences of the oscillator states. For the case of linear coupling, optimization of the delay time and linear filitering of coupling signals are considered. For the case of nonlinear coupling, general drive-response coupling is considered, and the optimal response and driving functions are derived. The theoretical results are exemplified by numerical simulations.

Structure identification and state initialization of spin networks with limited access

For reliable and consistent quantum information processing carried out on a quantum network, the network structure must be fully known and a desired initial state must be accurately prepared on it. In this paper, for a class of spin networks with its single node only accessible, we provide two continuous-measurement-based methods to achieve the above requirements; the first one identifies the unknown network structure with high probability, based on continuous-time Bayesian update of the graph structure; the second one is, with the use of adaptive measurement technique, able to deterministically drive any mixed state to a spin coherent state for network initialization.
