Bose-Einstein Condensates in Time Dependent Traps

We present analytical results for the macroscopic wave function of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a time dependent harmonic potential. The evolution of the spatial density is a dilatation, characterized by three scaling factors which allow a classical interpretation of the dynamics. This approach is an efficient tool for the analysis of recent experimental results on the expansion and collective excitation of a condensate.

Phonon number relaxation in a 3D superfluid with a concave acoustic branch

We consider the collisional evolution towards equilibrium of a spatially homogeneous and isotropic phonon gas of a three-dimensional superfluid with a concave acoustic excitation branch, at a non-zero but arbitrarily low temperature $T$. Three-phonon collisions $1\phi\leftrightarrow 2\phi$ are forbidden by conservation of energy-momentum. Four-phonon collisions $2\phi\to 2\phi$ of Landau and Khalatnikov lead, after a time $\propto T^{-7}$, only to a partial thermal equilibrium, a Bose law of non-zero chemical potential for the phonons, because they conserve the total number of phonons. Relaxation towards complete thermochemical equilibrium is therefore ensured by the much slower five-phonon collisions $2\phi\leftrightarrow 3\phi$ of Khalatnikov, in a time $\propto T^{-9}$. Using kinetic equations on the occupation numbers of the phonon modes and explicitly calculating the $2\phi\to 3\phi$ collisional amplitude with quantum hydrodynamics at low temperature, we determine the corresponding evolution of the fugacity $z_\phi$ of the phonon gas from the non-degenerate regime $z_\phi=0^+$ to complete equilibrium $z_\phi=1^-$. Using the conservation of total energy, we find that the fugacity varies with a non-integer power law $\propto t^{4/5}$ at short times and an exponential law at long times; the speed of change of entropy, always positive, is asymptotically proportional to the square of the speed of change of fugacity, $(\mathrm{d}/\mathrm{d}t)S_\phi\propto[(\mathrm{d}/\mathrm{d}t)z_\phi]^2$, as Landau predicted for an arbitrarily slow adiabatic transformation. Our results bring to a close the study initiated by Khalatnikov in 1950 and could be experimentally verified in a gas of cold fermionic atoms on the BCS side of the BEC-BCS crossover, or in superfluid liquid helium-4 at sufficiently high pressure.

Pair distribution functions of a superfluid spin-1/2 Fermi gas with contact interactions in the linearized time-dependent BCS theory

We show that the minimal mean-field theory to use for calculating the pair distribution functions $g_{\sigma\sigma'}(\vec{r},\vec{r}\,')$ of a spatially homogeneous, unpolarized spin-1/2 superfluid Fermi gas is not the ordinary static BCS theory, but the linearized time-dependent BCS theory implemented via the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Indeed, the former completely ignores the acoustic excitation branch - the phonons - of the superfluid, while the latter explicitly takes it into account, as well as the quantum fluctuations induced by the broken-pair continuum. Unlike the first, the second theory (i) reflects the effect of these collective excitations on the system's equation of state, including at zero temperature, (ii) allows the function $g_{\uparrow\downarrow}(\vec{r},\vec{r}\,')$ to go at sufficiently large distances strictly below its asymptotic value $(\rho/2)^2$ where $\rho$ is the gas density, as expected according to the quantum hydrodynamics of Landau and Khalatnikov at low temperatures, and (iii) predicts in the function $g_{\uparrow\uparrow}(\vec{r},\vec{r}\,')$ at short distances subdominant contributions $|\vec{r}-\vec{r}\,'|^2\ln|\vec{r}-\vec{r}\,'|$ in 3D and $|\vec{r}-\vec{r}\,'|^2\ln(-\ln|\vec{r}-\vec{r}\,'|)$ in 2D, alongside the dominant contributions $|\vec{r}-\vec{r}\,'|$ in 3D and $|\vec{r}-\vec{r}\,'|^2\ln|\vec{r}-\vec{r}\,'|$ in 2D already present in static BCS theory but with a lower coefficient. This discussion is relevant to the recent theoretical work of Obeso-Jureidini and Romero-Rochin, and to the ongoing experiments on cold atomic gases at ENS and MIT.

Open questions for strongly interacting Fermi gases with zero-range interactions

We review some unresolved theoretical issues in three-dimensional two-component Fermi gases, drawing on recent experiments on cold atoms in immaterial traps close to a magnetic Feshbach resonance. We distinguish successively (i) the open questions arising in the few-body problem with Wigner-Bethe-Peierls contact interactions - essentially the stability of the gas with respect to the Efimov effect and the calculation of the cluster (or virial) coefficients, (ii) those arising in the effective low-energy theory of Landau and Khalatnikov quantum hydrodynamics - essentially the damping of phonon modes and the coherence time of the condensate of pairs, and finally (iii) questions requiring a complete, microscopic solution of the many-body problem, such as the specific properties of the acoustic excitation branch (Goldstone) of the condensate of pairs, or its collective excitation branch (Higgs) in the broken-pair continuum.

Comment on "Excitation Spectrum and Superfluid Gap of an Ultracold Fermi Gas"

We present simple arguments suggesting that H. Biss et al [PRL 128, 100401 (2022)] did not measure with the required accuracy the low-wavenumber curvature of the acoustic excitation branch of the ground-state unitary Fermi gas. This difficult-to-calculate quantity is crucial for the relaxation dynamics of the gas at low temperature.

Phonon damping in a 2D superfluid: insufficiency of Fermi's golden rule at low temperature

It is generally accepted that the phonon gas of a superfluid always enters a weak coupling regime at sufficiently low temperatures, whatever the strength of the interactions between the underlying particles (constitutive of the superfluid). Thus, in this limit, we should always be able to calculate the damping rate of thermal phonons by applying Fermi's golden rule to the Hamiltonian $H_3$ of cubic phonon-phonon coupling taken from quantum hydrodynamics, at least in the case of a convex acoustic branch and in the collisionless regime (where the eigenfrequency of the considered phonons remains much greater than the gas thermalization rate). Using the many-body Green's function method, we predict that, unexpectedly, this is not true in two dimensions, contrary to the three-dimensional case. We confirm this prediction with classical phonon-field simulations and a non-perturbative theory in $H_3$, where the fourth order is regularized by hand, giving a complex energy to the virtual phonons of the four-phonon collisional processes. For a weakly interacting fluid and a phonon mode in the long-wavelength limit, we predict a damping rate about three times lower than that of the golden rule.

Fourth cluster and virial coefficients of a unitary Fermi gas for an arbitrary mass ratio

We calculate the fourth cluster coefficients of the homogeneous unitary spin 1/2 Fermi gas as functions of the internal-state mass ratio, over intervals constrained by the 3- or 4-body Efimov effect. For this we use our 2016 conjecture (validated for equal masses by Hou and Drut in 2020) in a numerically efficient formulation making the sum over angular momentum converge faster, which is crucial at large mass ratio. The mean cluster coefficient, relevant for equal chemical potentials, is not of constant sign and increases rapidly close to the Efimovian thresholds. We also get the fourth virial coefficients, which we find to be very poor indicators of interaction-induced 4-body correlations. We obtain analytically for all $n$ the cluster coefficients of order $n$ + 1 for an infinity-mass impurity fermion, matching the conjecture for $n=3$. Finally, in a harmonic potential, we predict a non-monotonic behavior of the 3 + 1 cluster coefficient with trapping frequency, near mass ratios where this coefficient vanishes in the homogeneous case.

Nuclear spin squeezing by continuous quantum non-demolition measurement: a theoretical study

We propose to take advantage of the weak coupling of ground-state helium-3 nuclear spin to its environment to produce long-lived macroscopic quantum states, nuclear spin squeezed states, in a gas cell at room temperature. To perform a quantum non-demolition measurement of a transverse component of the polarized collective nuclear spin, we maintain a population in helium-3 metastable state with a discharge. The collective spin associated to $F=1/2$ metastable level hybridizes with the ground state one by metastability exchange collisions. To access nuclear spin fluctuations, one continuously measures the light leaking out of an optical cavity, where it has interacted dispersively with the metastable state collective spin. In a three coupled collective spin model (nuclear, metastable and Stokes), we calculate moments of the nuclear spin squeezed component $I_z$ conditioned on the time averaged optical signal. In the photon counting scheme, the squeezed observable is $I_z^2$ rather than $I_z$. In the homodyne detection scheme, we solve the stochastic equation for the system state conditioned on the measurement; the conditional expectation value of $I_z$ depends linearly on the signal and the conditional variance of $I_z$ does not depend on it. The conditional variance decreases as $(\Gamma_{\rm sq}t)^{-1}$, where the squeezing rate $\Gamma_{\rm sq}$ depends linearly on the light intensity in the cavity at weak atom-field coupling and saturates at strong coupling to the ground state metastability exchange effective rate, proportional to the metastable atom density. Including de-excitation of metastable atoms at the walls, which induces nuclear spin decoherence with an effective rate $\gamma_\alpha$, we find a limit $\propto(\gamma_\alpha/\Gamma_{\rm sq})^{1/2}$ on the conditional variance reached in a time $\propto(\gamma_\alpha\Gamma_{\rm sq})^{-1/2}$.

Random walk of a massive quasiparticle in the phonon gas of an ultralow temperature superfluid

We consider a 3D homogeneous superfluid at low temperature $T$ with 2 types of excitations, gapless phonons with a linear dispersion relation at low wavenumber, and gapped quasiparticles with a quadratic dispersion relation around extrema. We calculate the scattering amplitude of a phonon on a quasiparticle to leading order in $T$ for all subsonic quasiparticle velocities, with a $S$-matrix formalism between exact asymptotic states dressed by virtual phonons. We then characterize the erratic motion of the quasiparticle in the superfluid due to its unceasing collisions with thermal phonons through mean force $F(k)$, longitudinal and transverse $k$-dependent momentum diffusion coefficients, and spatial diffusion coefficient. At the minimum location $k_0$ of the dispersion relation, where the velocity vanishes, $F(k)$ varies linearly with velocity with an isotropic friction coefficient; if $k_0=0$, the momentum diffusion is also isotropic and $F(k_0)=0$; if $k_0>0$, it is not, and $F(k_0)$ is nonzero but subleading with respect to friction by one order in $T$. The velocity time correlation function, whose integral is the spatial diffusion coefficient, decays with the mean velocity damping rate if $k_0=0$; if $k_0>0$, it has a second exponential component, with an amplitude and a damping rate lower by a factor $\propto T$ (it is the velocity direction thermalization rate). We also characterize force and momentum diffusion close to the stability domain sonic edge. Our general expressions are expected to be exact to leading order in $T$. We illustrate them in the BCS approximation, for a fermionic quasiparticle (an unpaired fermion) in a superfluid of spin 1/2 fermions, realisable with cold atoms in flat bottom traps. We also refute the statement of Lerch, Bartosch and Kopietz (2008), that there would be no fermionic quasiparticle in such a superfluid.

Bragg spectroscopy and pair-breaking-continuum mode in a superfluid Fermi gas

The superfluid, pair condensed spin-1/2 Fermi gases are supposed to exhibit at nonzero wave vector a still unobserved collective excitation mode in their pair-breaking continuum. Using BCS theory at zero temperature and in the long wavelength limit, we predict that this mode is quantitatively observable (in frequency, width and spectral weight) in the response of a cold atom gas to a laser Bragg excitation, if one measures the perturbation induced on the order parameter modulus rather than on the density.

Collective excitation branch in the continuum of pair-condensed Fermi gases : analytical study and scaling laws

The pair-condensed unpolarized spin-$1/2$ Fermi gases have a collective excitation branch in their pair-breaking continuum (V.A. Andrianov, V.N. Popov, 1976). We study it at zero temperature, with the eigenenergy equation deduced from the linearized time-dependent BCS theory and extended analytically to the lower half complex plane through its branch cut, calculating both the dispersion relation and the spectral weights (quasiparticle residues) of the branch. In the case of BCS superconductors, so called because the effect of the ion lattice is replaced by a short-range electron-electron interaction, we also include the Coulomb interaction and we restrict ourselves to the weak coupling limit $\Delta/\mu\to 0^+$ ($\Delta$ is the order parameter, $\mu $ the chemical potential) and to wavenumbers $q=O(1/\xi)$ where $\xi$ is the size of a pair; when the complex energy $z_q$ is expressed in units of $\Delta$ and $q$ in units of $1/\xi$, the branch follows a universal law insensitive to the Coulomb interaction. In the case of cold atoms in the BEC-BCS crossover, only a contact interaction remains, but the coupling strength $\Delta/\mu$ can take arbitrary values, and we study the branch at any wave number. At weak coupling, we predict three scales, that already mentioned $q\approx 1/\xi$, that $q\approx(\Delta/\mu)^{-1/3}/\xi$ where the real part of the dispersion relation has a minimum and that $q\approx (\mu/\Delta)/\xi\approx k_{\rm F}$ ($k_{\rm F}$ is the Fermi wave number) where the branch reaches the edge of its existence domain. Near the point where the chemical potential vanishes on the BCS side, $\mu/\Delta\to 0^+$, where $\xi\approx k_{\rm F}$, we find two scales $q\approx(\mu/\Delta)^{1/2}/\xi$ and $q\approx 1/\xi$. In all cases, the branch has a limit $2\Delta$ and a quadratic start at $q=0$. These results were obtained for $\mu>0$, where the eigenenergy equation admits at least two branch points $\epsilon_a(q)$ and $\epsilon_b(q)$ on the positive real axis, and for an analytic continuation through the interval $[\epsilon_a(q),\epsilon_b(q)] $. We find new continuum branches by performing the analytic continuation through $[\epsilon_b(q),+\infty[$ or even, for $q$ low enough, where there is a third real positive branch point $\epsilon_c(q)$, through $[\epsilon_b(q),\epsilon_c(q)]$ and $[\epsilon_c(q),+\infty[$. On the BEC side $\mu<0$ not previously studied, where there is only one real positive branch point $ \epsilon_a(q)$, we also find new collective excitation branches under the branch cut $[\epsilon_a (q),+\infty[$. For $\mu>0$, some of these new branches have a low-wavenumber exotic hypoacoustic $z_q\approx q^{3/2}$ or hyperacoustic $z_q\approx q^{4/5}$ behavior. For $\mu<0$, we find a hyperacoustic branch and a nonhypoacoustic branch, with a limit $2\Delta$ and a purely real quadratic start at $q=0$ for $\Delta/|\mu|<0.222$.

Phase spreading and temporal coherence of a pair-condensed Fermi gas at low temperature

A condensate of pairs in an isolated, homogeneous, unpolarised, finite-size spin 1/2 Fermi gas at low nonzero temperature T, undergoes with time a phase change with a random component, due to coupling to the gas thermal phonons. With the quantum second Josephson relation relating the derivative of the condensate phase operator to the phonon occupation numbers, and linearised kinetic equations giving the evolution of occupation number fluctuations, we access the behaviour of the phase change variance at times much longer than the phonon collision time. The case of a convex phonon branch is similar to the Bose gas case: the leading collisional processes are the Beliaev-Landau 3-phonons processes, and the variance is the sum of a ballistic term and of a delayed diffusive term, whose analytical expressions are given in the thermodynamic limit. The concave case is more exotic. It is analysed at time scales $T^{-9}$, allowing one to restrict to 2 phonons $\rightarrow$ 2 phonons small-angle Landau-Khalatnikov processes. The total number of phonons is conserved and the phonon mean occupation numbers at equilibrium can exhibit a negative chemical potential, assumed isotropic. The phase change variance is then the sum of a ballistic term, of a diffusive term, of exotic subsubleading terms and of a constant term. The analytic expression of some of the corresponding coefficients is obtained, as well as the diverging leading behavior of the other ones when the phonon chemical potential tends to 0. When this chemical potential is 0, the variance sub-ballistic part becomes superdiffusive, with an exponent 5/3 and an exactly-known coefficient. For a nonzero infinitesimal phonon chemical potential, a law is found, interpolating between superdiffusive and diffusive phase spreading. Also new results are obtained on the phonon Landau-Khalatnikov damping rate, in particular at negative phonon chemical potential.

Coherence time of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an isolated harmonically trapped gas

We study the condensate phase dynamics in a low-temperature equilibrium gas of weakly interacting bosons, harmonically trapped and isolated from the environment. We find that at long times, much longer than the collision time between Bogoliubov quasiparticles, the variance of the phase accumulated by the condensate grows with a ballistic term quadratic in time and a diffusive term affine in time. We give the corresponding analytical expressions in the limit of a large system, in the collisionless regime and in the ergodic approximation for the quasiparticle motion. When properly rescaled, they are described by universal functions of the temperature divided by the Thomas-Fermi chemical potential. The same conclusion holds for the mode damping rates. Such universality class differs from the previously studied one of the homogeneous gas.

Landau phonon-roton theory revisited for superfluid helium 4 and Fermi gases

Liquid helium and spin-1/2 cold-atom Fermi gases both exhibit in their superfluid phase two distinct types of excitations, gapless phonons and gapped rotons or fermionic pair-breaking excitations. In the long wavelength limit, revising and extending Landau and Khalatnikov's theory initially developed for helium [ZhETF 19, 637 (1949)], we obtain universal expressions for three- and four-body couplings among these two types of excitations. We calculate the corresponding phonon damping rates at low temperature and compare them to those of a pure phononic origin in high-pressure liquid helium and in strongly interacting Fermi gases, paving the way to experimental observations.

Mesoscopic quantum superpositions in bimodal Bose-Einstein condensates: decoherence and strategies to counteract it

We study theoretically the interaction-induced generation of mesoscopic coherent spin state superpositions (small cat states) from an initial coherent spin state in bimodal Bose-Einstein condensates and the subsequent phase revival, including decoherence due to particle losses and fluctuations of the total particle number. In a full multimode description, we propose a preparation procedure of the initial coherent spin state and we study the effect of preexisting thermal fluctuations on the phase revival, and on the spin and orbito-spinorial cat fidelities.

Three-phonon and four-phonon interaction processes in a pair-condensed Fermi gas

We study the interactions among phonons and the phonon lifetime in a pair-condensed Fermi gas in the BEC-BCS crossover in the collisionless regime. To compute the phonon-phonon coupling amplitudes we use a microscopic model based on a generalized BCS Ansatz including moving pairs, which allows for a systematic expansion around the mean field BCS approximation of the ground state. We show that the quantum hydrodynamic expression of the amplitudes obtained by Landau and Khalatnikov apply only on the energy shell, that is for resonant processes that conserve energy. The microscopic model yields the same excitation spectrum as the Random Phase Approximation, with a linear (phononic) start and a concavity at low wave number that changes from upwards to downwards in the BEC-BCS crossover. When the concavity of the dispersion relation is upwards at low wave number, the leading damping mechanism at low temperature is the Beliaev-Landau process 2 phonons $\leftrightarrow$ 1 phonon while, when the concavity is downwards, it is the Landau-Khalatnikov process 2 phonons $\leftrightarrow$ 2 phonons. In both cases, by rescaling the wave vectors to absorb the dependence on the interaction strength, we obtain a universal formula for the damping rate. This universal formula corrects and extends the original analytic results of Landau and Khalatnikov [ZhETF {\bf 19}, 637 (1949)] for the $2\leftrightarrow2$ processes in the downward concavity case. In the upward concavity case, for the Beliaev 1$\leftrightarrow$ 2 process for the unitary gas at zero temperature, we calculate the damping rate of an excitation with wave number $q$ including the first correction proportional to $q^7$ to the $q^5$ hydrodynamic prediction, which was never done before in a systematic way.

Unitary boson-boson and boson-fermion mixtures: third virial coefficient and three-body parameter on a narrow Feshbach resonance

We give exact integral expressions of the third cluster or virial coefficients of binary mixtures of ideal Bose or Fermi gases, with interspecies interactions of zero range and infinite s-wave scattering length. In general the result depends on three-body parameters Rt appearing in three-body contact conditions, because an Efimov effect is present or because the mixture is in a preefimovian regime with a mass ratio close to an Efimov effect threshold. We give a new, exact integral expression of Rt for the microscopic narrow Feshbach resonance model. A divergence of Rt in the preefimovian regime at a scaling exponent s = 1/2 is predicted and physically discussed. The analytical results are applied to typical species used in cold atom experiments.

Landau-Khalatnikov phonon damping in strongly interacting Fermi gases

We derive the phonon damping rate due to the four-phonon Landau-Khalatnikov process in low temperature strongly interacting Fermi gases using quantum hydrodynamics, correcting and extending the original calculation of Landau and Khalatnikov [ZhETF, 19 (1949) 637]. Our predictions can be tested in state-of-the-art experiments with cold atomic gases in the collisionless regime.
