Dynamic structure factor of a superfluid Fermi gas

We describe the excitation spectrum of a two-component neutral Fermi gas in the superfluid phase at finite temperature by deriving a suitable Random-Phase approximation with the technique of functional derivatives. The obtained spectrum for the homogeneous gas at small wavevectors contains the Bogoliubov-Anderson phonon and is essentially different from the spectrum predicted by the static Bogoliubov theory, which instead shows an unphysically large response. We adapt the results for the homogeneous system to obtain the dynamic structure factor of a harmonically confined superfluid and we identify in the spectrum a unique feature of the superfluid phase.

A Monte Carlo Formulation of the Bogolubov Theory

We propose an efficient stochastic method to implement numerically the Bogolubov approach to study finite-temperature Bose-Einstein condensates. Our method is based on the Wigner representation of the density matrix describing the non condensed modes and a Brownian motion simulation to sample the Wigner distribution at thermal equilibrium. Allowing to sample any density operator Gaussian in the field variables, our method is very general and it applies both to the Bogolubov and to the Hartree-Fock Bogolubov approach, in the equilibrium case as well as in the time-dependent case. We think that our method can be useful to study trapped Bose-Einstein condensates in two or three spatial dimensions without rotational symmetry properties, as in the case of condensates with vortices, where the traditional Bogolubov approach is difficult to implement numerically due to the need to diagonalize very big matrices.

Coherence properties of a continuous atom laser

We investigate the coherence properties of an atomic beam evaporatively cooled in a magnetic guide, assuming thermal equilibrium in the quantum degenerate regime. The gas experiences two-dimensional, transverse Bose-Einstein condensation rather than a full three-dimensional condensation because of the very elongated geometry of the magnetic guide. First order and second order correlation functions of the atomic field are used to characterize the coherence properties of the gas along the axis of the guide. The coherence length of the gas is found to be much larger than the thermal de Broglie wavelength in the strongly quantum degenerate regime. Large intensity fluctuations present in the ideal Bose gas model are found to be strongly reduced by repulsive atomic interactions; this conclusion is obtained with a one-dimensional classical field approximation valid when the temperature of the gas is much higher than its chemical potential, k_B T >> |mu|.

Binary Mixtures of Bose-Einstein Condensates: Phase dynamics and Spatial Dynamics

We investigate the relative phase coherence properties and the occurrence of demixing instabilities for two mutually interacting and time evolving Bose-Einstein condensates in traps. Our treatment naturally includes the additional decoherence effect due to fluctuations in the total number of particles. Analytical results are presented for the breathe-together solution, an extension of previously known scaling solution to the case of a binary mixture of condensates. When the three coupling constants describing the elastic interactions among the atoms in the two states are close to each other, a dramatic increase of the phase coherence time is predicted. Numerical results are presented for the parameters of the recent JILA experiments.

Phase Dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates: Losses versus Revivals

In the absence of losses the phase of a Bose-Einstein condensate undergoes collapses and revivals in time due to elastic atomic interactions. As experiments necessarily involve inelastic collisions, we develop a model to describe the phase dynamics of the condensates in presence of collisional losses. We find that a few inelastic processes are sufficient to damp the revivals of the phase. For this reason the observability of phase revivals for present experimental conditions is limited to condensates with a few hundreds of atoms.
