On the nonexistence of pure multi-solitons for the quartic gKdV equation

We consider the quartic (nonintegrable) (gKdV) equation. Let u(t) be an outgoing 2-soliton of the equation, i.e. a solution behaving exactly as the sum of two solitons (of speeds c1 and c2) for large positive time. In arXiv:0910.3204, for nearly equal solitons, the solution u(t) is computed up to some order of epsilon=1-c2/c1, everywhere in time and space. In particular, it is deduced that u(t) is not a multi-soliton for large negative time, proving the nonexistence of pure multi-soliton in this context. In the present paper, we prove the same result for an explicit range of speeds: 3/4 c1< c2< c1, by a different approach, which does not longer require a precise description of the solution. In fact, the nonexistence result holds for outgoing N-solitons, for any N>1, under an explicit assumption on the speeds, which is a natural generalization of the condition for N=2.

Minimal mass blow up solutions for a double power nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with double power nonlinearity, where one power is focusing and mass critical and the other mass sub-critical. Classical variational arguments ensure that initial data with mass less than the mass of the ground state of the mass critical problem lead to global in time solutions. We are interested by the threshold dynamic and in particular by the existence of finite time blow up minimal solutions. For the mass critical problem, such an object exists thanks to the explicit conformal symmetry, and is in fact unique. For the focusing double power nonlinearity, we exhibit a new class of minimal blow up solutions with blow up rates deeply affected by the double power nonlinearity. The analysis adapts the recent approach developed by Raphaël and Szeftel for the construction of minimal blow up elements.

Blow up for the critical gKdV equation III: exotic regimes

We consider the blow up problem in the energy space for the critical (gKdV) equation in the continuation of part I and part II. We know from part I that the unique and stable blow up rate for solutions close to the solitons with strong decay on the right is $1/t$. In this paper, we construct non-generic blow up regimes in the energy space by considering initial data with explicit slow decay on the right in space. We obtain finite time blow up solutions with speed $t^{-ν}$ where $ ν>11/13,$ as well as global in time growing up solutions with both exponential growth or power growth. These solutions can be taken with initial data arbitrarily close to the ground state solitary wave.

Blow up for the critical gKdV equation I: dynamics near the soliton

We fully revisit the near soliton dynamics for the mass critical (gKdV) equation. In Part I, for a class of initial data close to the soliton, we prove that only three scenario can occur: (BLOW UP) the solution blows up in finite time $T$ in a universal regime with speed $1/(T-t)$; (SOLITON) the solution is global and converges to a soliton in large time; (EXIT) the solution leaves any small neighborhood of the modulated family of solitons in the scale invariant $L^2$ norm. Regimes (BLOW UP) and (EXIT) are proved to be stable. We also show in this class that any nonpositive energy initial data (except solitons) yields finite time blow up, thus obtaining the classification of the solitary wave at zero energy. In Part II, we classify minimal mass blow up by proving existence and uniqueness (up to invariances of the equation) of a minimal mass blow up solution $S(t)$. We also completely describe the blow up behavior of $S(t)$. Second, we prove that $S(t)$ is the universal attractor in the (EXIT) case, i.e. any solution as above in the (EXIT) case is close to $S$ (up to invariances) in $L^2$ at the exit time. In particular, assuming scattering for $S(t)$ (in large positive time), we obtain that any solution in the (EXIT) scenario also scatters, thus achieving the description of the near soliton dynamics.

Local well-posedness and blow up in the energy space for a class of L2 critical dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equations

We consider a family of dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equations (dgBO) which are critical with respect to the L2 norm and interpolate between the critical modified (BO) equation and the critical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation (gKdV). First, we prove local well-posedness in the energy space for these equations, extending results by Kenig, Ponce and Vega concerning the (gKdV) equations. Second, we address the blow up problem in the spirit of works of Martel and Merle on the critical (gKdV) equation, by studying rigidity properties of the (dgBO) flow in a neighborhood of solitons. We prove that when the model is close to critical (gKdV), solutions of negative energy close to solitons blow up in finite or infinite time in the energy space. The blow up proof requires in particular extensions to (dgBO) of monotonicity results for localized versions of L2 norms by pseudo-differential operator tools.

Inelastic interaction of nearly equal solitons for the BBM equation

This paper is concerned with the interaction of two solitons of nearly equal speeds for the (BBM) equation. This work is an extension of the results obtained in arXiv:0910.3204 by the same authors, addressing the same question for the quartic (gKdV) equation. First, we prove that the two solitons are preserved by the interaction and that for all time they are separated by a large distance, as in the case of the integrable (KdV) equation in this regime. Second, we prove that the collision is not perfectly elastic, except in the integrable case (i.e. in the limiting case of the (KdV) equation).

Inelastic interaction of nearly equal solitons for the quartic gKdV equation

This paper presents a complete description of the interaction of two solitons with nearly equal speeds for the quartic (gKdV) equation. By constructing an approximate solution of the problem, we prove that at the main order, the two solitons are preserved by the interaction and that for all time they are separated by a large distance, as in the case of the integrable KdV equation in this regime. However, unlike in the integrable case, we prove that the collision is not perfectly elastic.

Construction of multi-soliton solutions for the L2-supercritical gKdV and NLS equations

Multi-soliton solutions, i.e. solutions behaving as the sum of N given solitons as $t\to +\infty$, were constructed in previous works for the L2 critical and subcritical (NLS) and (gKdV) equations. In this paper, we extend the construction of multi-soliton solutions to the L2 supercritical case both for (gKdV) and (NLS) equations, using a topological argument to control the direction of instability.

Asymptotic stability of solitons of the gKdV equations with general nonlinearity

We consider the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation \partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + f(u))=0, \quad (t,x)\in [0,T)\times \mathbb{R}, (1) with general $C^3$ nonlinearity $f$. Under an explicit condition on $f$ and $c>0$, there exists a solution in the energy space $H^1$ of (1) of the type $u(t,x)=Q_c(x-x_0-ct)$, called soliton. In this paper, under general assumptions on $f$ and $Q_c$, we prove that the family of soliton solutions around $Q_c$ is asymptotically stable in some local sense in $H^1$, i.e. if $u(t)$ is close to $Q_{c}$ (for all $t\geq 0$), then $u(t)$ locally converges in the energy space to some $Q_{c_+}$ as $t\to +\infty$. Note in particular that we do not assume the stability of $Q_{c}$. This result is based on a rigidity property of equation (1) around $Q_{c}$ in the energy space whose proof relies on the introduction of a dual problem. These results extend the main results in previous works devoted to the pure power case.

Refined asymptotics around solitons for gKdV equations

We consider the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation $$ \partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + f(u))=0, \quad (t,x)\in [0,T)\times \mathbb{R}$$ with general $C^2$ nonlinearity $f$. Under an explicit condition on $f$ and $c>0$, there exists a solution in the energy space $H^1$ of the type $u(t,x)=Q_c(x-x_0-ct)$, called soliton. Stability theory for $Q_c$ is well-known. In previous works, we have proved that for $f(u)=u^p$, $p=2,3,4$, the family of solitons is asymptotically stable in some local sense in $H^1$, i.e. if $u(t)$ is close to $Q_{c}$ (for all $t\geq 0$), then $u(t,.+ρ(t))$ locally converges in the energy space to some $Q_{c_+}$ as $t\to +\infty$, for some $c^+\sim c$. Then, the asymptotic stability result could be extended to the case of general assumptions on $f$ and $Q_c$. The objective of this paper is twofold. The main objective is to prove that in the case $f(u)=u^p$, $p=2,3,4$, $ρ(t)-c_+ t$ has limit as $t\to +\infty$ under the additional assumption $x_+ u\in L^2$. The second objective of this paper is to provide large time stability and asymptotic stability results for two soliton solutions for the case of general nonlinearity $f(u)$, when the ratio of the speeds of the solitons is small. The motivation is to accompany forthcoming works devoted to the collision of two solitons in the nonintegrable case. The arguments are refinements of previous works specialized to the case $u(t)\sim Q_{c_1}+Q_{c_2}$, for $0< c_2 \ll c_1$.

Description of two soliton collision for the quartic gKdV equation

This paper concerns the problem of collision of two solitons for the quartic generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. We introduce a new framework to describe the collision in the special case where one soliton is small with respect to the other. We prove that the two soliton survive the collision, we describe the collision phenomenon (computation of the first order of the resulting shifts on the solitons). Moreover, we prove that in this situation, there does not exist pure two-soliton solutions.

Stability of two soliton collision for nonintegrable gKdV equations

We continue our study of the collision of two solitons for the subcritical generalized KdV equations. In a previous paper, mainly devoted to the case of the quartic gKdV equation, we have introduced a new framework to understand the collision of two solitons in the case where one soliton is small with respect to the other. In this paper, we consider the case of a general nonlinearity $f(u)$ for which the two solitons are nonlinearly stable. We prove that in this situation the two solitons survive and we describe the collision at the main orders.

Stability of blow-up profile and lower bounds for blow-up rate for the critical generalized KdV equation

The generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations are a class of Hamiltonian systems in infinite dimension derived from the KdV equation where the quadratic term is replaced by a higher order power term. These equations have two conservation laws in the energy space H^1(L^2 norm and energy). We consider in this paper the {\it critical} generalized KdV equation, which corresponds to the smallest power of the nonlinearity such that the two conservation laws do not imply a bound in H^1 uniform in time for all H^1 solutions (and thus global existence). From [15], there do exist for this equation solutions u(t) such that |u(t)|_{H^1} \to +\infty as T\uparrow T, where T\le +\infty (we call them blow-up solutions). The question is to describe, in a qualitative way, how blow up occurs. For solutions with L^2 mass close to the minimal mass allowing blow up and with decay in L^2 at the right, we prove after rescaling and translation which leave invariant the L^2 norm that the solution converges to a {\it universal} profile locally in space at the blow-up time T. From the nature of this profile, we improve the standard lower bound on the blow-up rate for finite time blow-up solutions.

Stability and asymptotic stability in the energy space of the sum of N solitons for subcritical gKdV equations

We prove in this paper the stability and asymptotic stability in H^1 of a decoupled sum of N solitons for the subcritical generalized KdV equations $u_t+(u_{xx}+u^p)_x=0$ (1<p<5). The proof of the stability result is based on energy arguments and monotonicity of local L^2 norm. Note that the result is new even for p=2 (the KdV equation). The asymptotic stability result then follows directly from a rigidity theorem in [15].
