The scalarised Schwarzschild-NUT spacetime

It has recently been suggested that vacuum black holes of General Relativity (GR) can become spontaneously scalarised when appropriate non-minimal couplings to curvature invariants are considered. These models circumvent the standard black hole no scalar hair theorems of GR, allowing both the standard GR solutions and new scalarised ($a.k.a.$ hairy) solutions, which in some cases are thermodynamically preferred. Up to now, however, only (static and spherically symmetric) scalarised Schwarzschild solutions have been considered. It would be desirable to take into account the effect of rotation; however, the higher curvature invariants introduce a considerable challenge in obtaining the corresponding scalarised rotating black holes. As a toy model for rotation, we present here the scalarised generalisation of the Schwarzschild-NUT solution, taking either the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) or the Chern-Simons (CS) curvature invariant. The NUT charge $n$ endows spacetime with "rotation", but the angular dependence of the corresponding scalarised solutions factorises, leading to a considerable technical simplification. For GB, but not for CS, scalarisation occurs for $n=0$. This basic difference leads to a distinct space of solutions in the CS case, in particular exhibiting a double branch structure. In the GB case, increasing the horizon area demands a stronger non-minimal coupling for scalarisation; in the CS case, due to the double branch structure, both this and the opposite trend are found. We briefly comment also on the scalarised Reissner-Nordström-NUT solutions.

Critical phenomena of charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes with charged scalar hair

Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-gravity (EGB) coupled minimally to a $U(1)$ gauged, massive scalar field possesses -- for appropriate choices of the $U(1)$ charge -- black hole solutions that carry charged scalar hair if the frequency of the harmonic time-dependence of the scalar field is equal to the upper bound on the superradiant frequency. The existence of these solutions has first been discussed in \cite{Grandi:2017zgz}. In this paper, we demonstrate that the critical value of the scalar charge results from the requirement of non-extremality of the charged black hole solutions and the fact that the scalar field should not escape to infinity. Moreover, we investigate the hairy black holes in more detail and demonstrate that the branch of these solutions joins the branch of the corresponding charged EGB black hole for vanishing scalar field, but is {\it not} connected to the branch of boson stars in the limit of vanishing horizon radius. This indicates that it is unlikely that these black holes appear from the collapse of the corresponding boson stars. Finally, we prove a No-hair theorem for charged scalar fields with harmonic time-dependence for static, spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat electro-vacuum black holes in $d$ space-time dimensions and hence demonstrate that the GB term is crucial for the existence of the hairy black holes discussed in this paper.

An analytic effective model for hairy black holes

Hairy black holes (BHs) have macroscopic degrees of freedom which are not associated with a Gauss law. As such, these degrees of freedom are not manifest as quasi-local quantities computed at the horizon. This suggests conceiving hairy BHs as an interacting system with two components: a "bald" horizon coupled to a "hairy" environment. Based on this idea we suggest an effective model for hairy BHs -- typically described by numerical solutions -- that allows computing analytically thermodynamic and other quantities of the hairy BH in terms of a fiducial bald BH. The effective model is universal in the sense that it is only sensitive to the fiducial BH, but not to the details of the hairy BH. Consequently, it is only valid in the vicinity of the fiducial BH limit. We discuss, quantitatively, the accuracy of the effective model for asymptotically flat BHs with synchronised hair, both in $D=4$ (including self-interactions) and $D=5$ spacetime dimensions. We also discuss the applicability of the model to synchronised BHs in $D=5$ asymptotically $AdS$ and static $D=4$ coloured BHs, exhibiting its limitations.

Solitons and black hole in shift symmetric scalar-tensor gravity with cosmological constant

We demonstrate the existence of static, spherically symmetric globally regular, i.e. solitonic solutions of a shift-symmetric scalar-tensor gravity model with negative cosmological constant. The norm of the Noether current associated to the shift symmetry is finite in the full space-time. We also discuss the corresponding black hole solutions and demonstrate that the interplay between the scalar-tensor coupling and the cosmological constant leads to the existence of new branches of solutions. To linear order in the scalar-tensor coupling, the asymptotic space-time corresponds to an Anti-de Sitter space-time with a non-trivial scalar field on its conformal boundary. This allows the interpretation of our solutions in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Finally, we demonstrate that - for physically relevant, small values of the scalar-tensor coupling - solutions with positive cosmological constant do not exist in our model.

Skyrmions, Skyrme stars and black holes with Skyrme hair in five spacetime dimension

We consider a class of generalizations of the Skyrme model to five spacetime dimensions ($d=5$), which is defined in terms of an $O(5)$ sigma model. A special ansatz for the Skyrme field allows angular momentum to be present and equations of motion with a radial dependence only. Using it, we obtain: 1) everywhere regular solutions describing localised energy lumps (Skyrmions); 2) Self-gravitating, asymptotically flat, everywhere non-singular solitonic solutions (Skyrme stars), upon minimally coupling the model to Einstein's gravity; 3) both static and spinning black holes with Skyrme hair, the latter with rotation in two orthogonal planes, with both angular momenta of equal magnitude. In the absence of gravity we present an analytic solution that satisfies a BPS-type bound and explore numerically some of the non-BPS solutions. In the presence of gravity, we contrast the solutions to this model with solutions to a complex scalar field model, namely boson stars and black holes with synchronised hair. Remarkably, even though the two models present key differences, and in particular the Skyrme model allows static hairy black holes, when introducing rotation, the synchronisation condition becomes mandatory, providing further evidence for its generality in obtaining rotating hairy black holes.

Charged black holes in a generalized scalar-tensor gravity model

We study 4-dimensional charged and static black holes in a generalized scalar-tensor gravity model, in which a shift symmetry for the scalar field exists. For vanishing scalar field the solution corresponds to the Reissner-Nordström (RN) solution, while solutions of the full scalar-gravity model have to be constructed numerically. We demonstrate that these black holes support galilean scalar hair up to a maximal value of the scalar-tensor coupling that depends on the value of the charge and can be up to roughly twice as large as that for uncharged solutions. The Hawking temperature $T_{\rm H}$ of the hairy black holes at maximal scalar-tensor coupling decreases continuously with the increase of the charge and reaches $T_{\rm H}=0$ for the highest possible charge that these solutions can carry. However, in this limit, the scalar-tensor coupling needs to vanish. The limiting solution hence corresponds to the extremal RN solution, which does not support regular galilaen scalar hair due to its AdS$_2\times S^2$ near-horizon geometry.

Remarks on the Taub-NUT solution in Chern-Simons modified gravity

We discuss the generalization of the NUT spacetime in General Relativity (GR) within the framework of the (dynamical) Einstein--Chern-Simons (ECS) theory with a massless scalar field. These configurations approach asymptotically the NUT spacetime and are characterized by the `electric' and `magnetic' mass parameters and a scalar `charge'. The solutions are found both analytically and numerically. The analytical approach is perturbative around the Einstein gravity background. Our results indicate that the ECS configurations share all basic properties of the NUT spacetime in GR. However, when considering the solutions inside the event horizon, we find that in contrast to the GR case, the spacetime curvature grows (apparently) without bound.

Boson stars in biscalar extensions of Horndeski gravity

This paper is concerned with the construction and analysis of boson stars in the context of nonminimal derivative coupling theories. In particular we embed our model in the biscalar extension of Horndeski gravity, considering a scalar field theory displaying a nonminimally coupled kinetic term given by the Einstein tensor. We focus on the case where the potential is given by a mass term only, and when a six order self-interaction is included. In the latter case we consider specific couplings in the self-interacting terms in such a way that our self-interaction is given by a positive definite potential presenting two degenerate local vacua. We show how solutions can be obtained and we compare its principal properties with standard configurations constructed with the usual minimally coupled kinetic term.

Inside black holes with synchronized hair

Recently, various examples of asymptotically flat, rotating black holes (BHs) with synchronized hair have been explicitly constructed, including Kerr BHs with scalar or Proca hair, and Myers-Perry BHs with scalar hair and a mass gap, showing there is a general mechanism at work. All these solutions have been found numerically, integrating the fully non-linear field equations of motion from the event horizon outwards. Here, we address the spacetime geometry of these solutions inside the event horizon. Firstly, we provide arguments, within linear theory, that there is no regular inner horizon for these solutions. Then, we address this question fully non-linearly, using as a tractable model five dimensional, equal spinning, Myers-Perry hairy BHs. We find that, for non-extremal solutions: $(1)$ the inside spacetime geometry in the vicinity of the event horizon is smooth and the equations of motion can be integrated inwards; $(2)$ before an inner horizon is reached, the spacetime curvature grows (apparently) without bound. In all cases, our results suggest the absence of a smooth Cauchy horizon, beyond which the metric can be extended, for hairy BHs with synchronized hair.

Minimal boson stars in 5 dimensions: classical instability and existence of ergoregions

We show that minimal boson stars, i.e. boson stars made out of scalar fields without self-interaction, are always classically unstable in 5 space-time dimensions. This is true for the non-rotating as well as rotating case with two equal angular momenta and in both Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, respectively, and contrasts with the 4-dimensional case, where classically stable minimal boson stars exist. We also discuss the appearance of ergoregions for rotating boson stars with two equal angular momenta. While rotating black holes typically possess an ergoregion, rotating compact objects without horizons such as boson stars have ergoregions only in a limited range of the parameter space. In this paper, we show for which values of the parameters these ergoregions appear and compare this with the case of standard Einstein gravity. We also point out that the interplay between Gauss-Bonnet gravity and rotation puts constraints on the behaviour of the space-time close to the rotation axis.

From topological to non-topological solitons: kinks, domain walls and Q-balls in a scalar field model with non-trivial vacuum manifold

We consider a scalar field model with a self-interaction potential that possesses a discrete vacuum manifold. We point out that this model allows for both topological as well as non-topological solitons. In (1+1) dimensions both type of solutions have finite energy, while in (3+1) dimensions, the topological solitons have finite energy per unit area only and correspond to domain walls. Non-topological solitons with finite energy do exist in (3+1) dimensions due to a non-trivial phase of the scalar field and an associated U(1) symmetry of the model, though. We construct these so-called Q-ball solutions numerically, point out the differences to previous studies with different scalar field potentials and also discuss the influence of a minimal coupling to both gravity as well as a U(1) gauge field. In this latter case, the conserved Noether charge Q can be interpreted as the electric charge of the solution.

Self-interacting boson stars with a single Killing vector field in Anti-de Sitter

We construct rotating boson stars in (4+1)-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space-time (aAdS) with two equal angular momenta that are composed out of a massive and self-interacting scalar field. These solutions possess a single Killing vector field. We construct explicit solutions of the equations in the case of a fixed AdS background and vanishing self-coupling of the scalar field. These are the generalizations of the oscillons discussed in the literature previously now taking the mass of the scalar field into account. We study the evolution of the spectrum of massive oscillons when taking backreaction and/or the self-coupling into account numerically. We observe that very compact boson stars possess an ergoregion.

Charged isotropic non-Abelian dyonic black branes

We construct black holes with a Ricci flat horizon in Einstein--Yang-Mills theory with a negative cosmological constant, which approach asymptotically an AdS$_d$ spacetime background (with $d\geq 4$). These solutions are isotropic, $i.e.$ all space directions in a hypersurface of constant radial and time coordinates are equivalent, and possess both electric and magnetic fields. We find that the basic properties of the non-Abelian solutions are similar to those of the dyonic isotropic branes in Einstein-Maxwell theory (which, however, exist in even spacetime dimensions only). These black branes possess a nonzero magnetic field strength on the flat boundary metric, which leads to a divergent mass of these solutions, as defined in the usual way. However, a different picture is found for odd spacetime dimensions, where a non-Abelian Chern-Simons term can be incorporated in the action. This allows for black brane solutions with a magnetic field which vanishes asymptotically.

Myers-Perry black holes with scalar hair and a mass gap

We construct a family of asymptotically flat, rotating black holes with scalar hair and a regular horizon, within five dimensional Einstein's gravity minimally coupled to a complex, massive scalar field doublet. These solutions are supported by rotation and have no static limit. They are described by their mass $M$, two equal angular momenta $J_1=J_2\equiv J$ and a conserved Noether charge $Q$, measuring the scalar hair. For vanishing horizon size the solutions reduce to five dimensional boson stars. In the limit of vanishing Noether charge density, the scalar field becomes point-wise arbitrarily small and the geometry becomes, locally, arbitrarily close to that of a specific set of Myers-Perry black holes (MPBHs); but there remains a global difference with respect to the latter, manifest in a finite mass gap. Thus, the scalar hair never becomes a linear perturbation of MPBHs. This is a qualitative difference when compared to Kerr black holes with scalar hair~\cite{Herdeiro:2014goa}. Whereas the existence of the latter can be anticipated in linear theory, from the existence of scalar bound states on the Kerr geometry (i.e. scalar clouds), the hair of these MPBHs is intrinsically non-linear.

Charged Q-balls and boson stars and dynamics of charged test particles

We construct electrically charged Q-balls and boson stars in a model with a scalar self-interaction potential resulting from gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. We discuss the properties of these solutions in detail and emphasize the differences to the uncharged case. We observe that Q-balls can only be constructed up to a maximal value of the charge of the scalar field, while for boson stars the interplay between the attractive gravitational force and the repulsive electromagnetic force determines their behaviour. We find that the vacuum is stable with respect to pair production in the presence of our charged boson stars. We also study the motion of charged, massive test particles in the space-time of boson stars. We find that in contrast to charged black holes the motion of charged test particles in charged boson star space-times is planar, but that the presence of the scalar field plays a crucial role for the qualitative features of the trajectories. Applications of this test particle motion can be made in the study of extreme-mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs) as well as astrophysical plasmas relevant e.g. in the formation of accretion discs and polar jets of compact objects.

Rotating Boson Stars in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

A self-interacting SU(2)-doublet of complex scalar fields, minimally coupled to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is considered in five space-time dimensions. The classical equations admit two families of solitons corresponding to spinning and non-spinning bosons stars. The generic solutions are constructed numerically and agree with exact results that are available in special limits of the parameters. The pattern of the boson stars is shown to be qualitatively affected by the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant.

AdS solitons with conformal scalar hair

We study spherically symmetric soliton solutions in a model with a conformally coupled scalar field as well as in full conformal gravity. We observe that a new type of limiting behaviour appears for particular choices of the self-coupling of the scalar field, i.e. the solitons interpolate smoothly between the Anti-de Sitter vacuum and an uncharged configuration. Furthermore, within conformal gravity the qualitative approach of a limiting solution does not change when varying the charge of the scalar field - contrary to the Einstein-Hilbert case. However, it changes with the scalar self-coupling.

Stability of charged solitons and formation of boson stars in 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space-time

We study the stability of charged solitons in 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time. We show that for appropriate choices of the parameters of the model these solutions become unstable to form scalar hair. We find that the existence of charged solitons with scalar hair depends crucially on the charge and the mass of the scalar field. We investigate the dependence of the spectrum of solutions on the mass of the scalar field in detail. For positive mass of the scalar field the hairy solitons can be interpreted as charged boson stars. We find that for sufficiently small value of the charge of the scalar field a "forbidden band" of the boson star mass and charge exists, while all our results indicate that - contrary to the asymptotically flat space-time case - boson stars in asymptotically AdS can have arbitrarily large charge and mass.
